[Bug 600087] [NEW] NetHack QT leaves /var/games/nethack/perm_lock around
Public bug reported: This is a right pain. For some reason (heh :-) both my kids love NetHack, but *boy* do they go ballistic when they click the icon and nothing happens. Investigation shows that it's moaning about /var/games/nethack/perm being locked, but it provides no facility (that I can see) to remove the lock. The user that they are running at *can't* remove the lock, but the whole thing smacks of crappy design. There's a bug somewhere if the file needs to be locked in that way without any way to override it when $WHATEVER happens that they do. I've quizzed themabout how it happens and it doesn't seem like they're doing anything particularly wierd. They just get killed, go through their possessions, and the window closes - but then they can't start the next game in the addiction!!! I'd script something around it for myself, but it seems likely it must also be a complete pain for $JOEPARENT who could not do that. At the very least it would be nice if the lock file could be cleaned out on boot, so that the three-finger-salution could work in such cases. Of course a fix so the lock couldn't get left lying around would be even better :-) Thanks, Andrew McMillan. [Bug 576001] Re: kernel 2.6.32-32 makes machine hang during boot
I did a clean install using the x64 version of Lucid, kernel 2.6.32-31. The only thing I did before upgrading to the new kernel (2.6.32-32) was build the drivers for my RAID card (Highpoint Technologies RocketRAID 2640x1) and added an entry to fstab to mount the array on boot. It's now sitting at the same thing it was in the original bug report: fsck /dev/sda1 clean... I booted into the previous kernel and commented out the fstab entry for my RAID array and rebooted into the new kernel. I was met with a logon prompt, as expected. I hooked up an external USB hard drive to the machine, added an entry to fstab and rebooted. It came up fine. Disconnected the USB drive and rebooted, it hung again. I tried rebooting into the previous kernel with the drive disconnected and it hung at fsck /dev/sda1 clean.. until I hit "s" then it continued to boot and came up as normal. Booted into the new kernel and hit "s" even though it was just sitting at a blinking cursor, and arrived at a logon prompt. Did the same after uncommenting the RAID volume, same thing happened. After hitting "s", I got "skipping /array at user's request" that device is set to be mounted on /array in fstab. My guess is that it's not showing the press "s" to skip, etc if is cannot find a device listed in fstab. It sounds like there is something causing the OS to not display if there is an entry in fstab, but the disk doesn't exist. There was a thread about a similar thing happening on Ubuntu desktop, except they were prompted to hit "s" or "m" http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1520413 Also, I just wanted to note: I went thru many, kernel upgrades on Karmic without having to comment out the fstab entry in order for the machine to boot. All I needed to do was build the drivers after I booted into the new kernel and then reboot and all was well. I hope this helps; it sounds like the -server kernel handles mounting fstab differently somehow. I've been struggling with this issue for a couple of months as well. I used to solve it by patching and recompiling the kernel. [Bug 565613] Re: Linksys WUSB54G wireless adapter not working in Ubuntu 10.04
Hello Carlos. How "fresh" was your first fresh installation? If it was an upgrade from Karmic it could have been using the Karmic drivers which Adrien reports worked very well. It your experience truly did show that it worked from the installation kernel and failed with the installed kernel that might be an important clue in narrowing down this bug. I sometimes have troubles with wifi of my own hardware and others who I help at user groups from time to time so I know how frustrating it can be to see it work with Windows and not work with Linux. This is one of those nasty cases that can use all the help it can get so a fix can be found for all possible cases of slightly different hardware. I talked to Adrien Lamothe on Sunday at a LUG meeting. I insisted we try plugging his USB adapter into my Lucid laptop running linux- image-2.6.32-23-generic (2.6.32-23.37) kernel that has the linux- firmware-nonfree 1.8 installed on it already. It failed to recognize or show up with sudo lsusb -v for some reason. My guess is this was due to several suspend and resume events. I have no problems with other USB devices on this laptop but without the hardware here I can't troubleshoot further. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys says that only v.4 WUSB54G adapters use the Ralink 2500 chipset. As I recall Adrien said his uses a different one. I hope he responds with more details about how it appears to the kernel under 9.10. I believe the WUSB54G is a widely sold Linksys adapter "model" that has been manufactured using several different chipsets over time, each needing different firmware. When looking closely at Adrien's this weekend we found no minor revision number on the hardware. Serial numbers might be needed to help track down this bug if linux-firmware-nonfree still doesn't fix it in all cases. Since Adrien has now downgraded back to 9.10 in part because of this 10.04 bug it would be helpful if other people can take the time to provide the details that Brian and Jeremy need to help isolate this bug. -- Linksys WUSB54G wireless adapter not working in Ubuntu 10.04 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565613 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 531069] Re: Display error when returning from sleep after docking
Ok. There seem to now be different issues here: 1) Hans-Gerd reports that newer upstream kernels fail to drive the external monitor correctly. It looks like the problem there is that when X starts it chooses to clone the screens, looks for the best mode common to the laptop display and the external display, and chooses a mode that the external display doesn't like. In this case it'd be good to have the EDID information for the external display - is the Intel driver picking a mode not in the EDID, or is the monitor's EDID incorrect when it says that it supports the 1024x768 modeline. 2) Torsten reports that when resuming after the docking-station suspend/undock/resume/suspend/dock dance the display sometimes doesn't come back on, fixable by switching VTs. Furthermore he reports that in at least one case the displays were not cloned and the LVDS was primary - resulting in the unlock dialog being displayed only on the (closed) laptop monitor. I suspect *this* might be a race between gnome-settings-daemon and X - they have different behaviours on monitor hotplug. G-S-D will add the new monitor as a separate, spanned display, X will clone the displays. Disabling the gnome-settings-daemon xrandr plugin should disable g-s-d's monitor hotplug behaviour, allowing this to be tested. I've now got access to a docking station, so I'll test this out locally with my x200s. -- Display error when returning from sleep after docking https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/531069 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 21404] Re: Show updates with no password fails
Within gksu itself, you now get a message on stderr if the wrong password is entered, but that typically won't be visible when it's started by some other program. So this bug could be considered fixed in update-manager, but arguably still open in gksu, depending on whether it's considered to be gksu's job to explain that the password was wrong. m...@grace% gksu id GNOME_SUDO_PASSSorry, try again. sudo: 3 incorrect password attempts -- Show updates with no password fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/21404 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP+SSL breaks setuid applications like su and sudo
I was a bit disheartened to see this is an actual bug - be it because of X package or not, of the two workstations at my desk, the fedora13 box has no problems (and uses nscd) and the ubuntu one does. Reading here, I saw the libnss-ldapd suggestion, tried it, worked fine. Regarding Hark's comment about pam_check_host_attr and pam_check_service_attr (comment #87), I would bet you could solve that another way. Solution I already had in place for another reason entirely was the follows, and works just fine for host-based restrictions: 1) create a group in ldap for the host "hostgrp" - and put the users in that group you want. 2) use pam_succeed_if.so to restrict to the group you want. In common-auth, before pam_ldap.so, put: authrequisite pam_succeed_if.so user ingroup hostgrp quiet_success This will cause pam to only allow someone in group hostgrp to log in. Remove them from hostgrp, they can't log in. That's what you're wanting that nslcd/libnss-ldapd isn't allowing, right? Well, PAM has been around longer than nscd/nslcd anyway ;) BTW, in case it isn't obvious, pam_succeed_if statements can be stacked - the chain goes one to the next, same as when you're using one mod then another. -- NSS using LDAP+SSL breaks setuid applications like su and sudo https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/423252 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
