i see, so it is software problem, nothing hardware. can u recount how do u get to this stage of getting the software to work again? (did u do anything, or just simply reboot your machine?) many bug report is linked to resuming from suspend, and the sound driver somehow cannot suspend and resume cleanly..but then this is also resolved at some stage. The lsof which I requested was meant to see which processes open up which sound ports, and possibly meaning that the kernel has to multiplex these different applications together with regard to transmitting sound to the speaker. And if there is no sound, one of these processes could be the culprit of the failure - which is why u need to compare the lsof before and after the sound failed. I have also had this bug at upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, amd64. Since I made an image before upgrade, I just reversed it. Processes ate up all my PC's resources until swap was full. See attached screenshot. This took place at 1st July via internet upgrade (GUI). I will retry upgrade when the bug is fixed. I definitely want two panels at the top. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: scidavis Scidavis can't be installed in Maverick, due to its dependency on the obsolete QAssistantClient class. This was previously provided by the qt4-assistant binary package (from qt4-x11) but this package is no longer available. The qassistantclient.h header also appears to have been removed from the dev package. New update. I have changed from an ATI Radeon 9250 AGP(Asus) to a Nvidia(Club 3D) 6200 AGP 256MB. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 on this same PC. I also installed all the updates. I'm using at the moment the Nvidia binary drivers from the repos, installed through Jockey(nvidia-current). System is still crashing after a few hours. I've tested/installed Trisquel GNU/Linux 3.5 AMD64 on this same PC with the ATI 9250 and the Nvidia 6200, didn't install binary drivers, didn't configure 3D support. Left the PC on for a couple of days. System didn't crash with any of the graphic card. However, the installation failed when I clicked Continue after selecting all the options except Manual package selection. While Select and Install software was going on it stopped after 14% saying:- Installation step failed An installation step failed. [Bug 601634] [NEW] file-roller fails to decompress tar.gz or tar.bz2 archive on FAT drives

Binary package hint: file-roller
When trying to decompress a tar.bz2 or tar.gz archive on FAT drive,
file-roller quits with following error message
tar: {filename goes here}: Cannot change mode to rwxr-xr-x: Operation not
permitted
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
despite being able to decompress all files - if I'm quick, I can open
them in the temporary directory created by file-roller, but as soon as
the decompression process ends, file-roller deletes them, so I'm left
with no files at all.
Suggested solutions:
- File-roller should run tar without -p option
- As above, but only when the target drive is FAT (or any other that doesn't
support POSIX permissions)
- Decompression errors should not delete all the files, but the user should be
given the option: Decompression process ended with following errors. Do you
wish to remove the partially-decompressed files? [Yes/No]
- File-roller should check if the errors generated by tar are fatal or not and
react accordingly
My FAT drive is mounted as following:
