[Bug 650498] Re: Expansion: 'ẞ' LATIN CA PTIAL LETTER SHARP S (U+1E9E)

2010-11-08 Thread Bruno Maag
soc, please don't take my arguments as a personal affront.Like yourself,
I have a strong opinion about this glyph - and I guess being Swiss
doesn't help, since we would prefer to put this character into a
parallel universe and then close the space-time rift forever.

As I can't do much about the Unicode inclusion of the cap Eszett other
than maybe go to a conference one day and start petitioning for the
reversal of that decision, I am aware that we have to come to a
solution. My primary objection is to creating a capitalised version of
this ligature (note the wording! ;-) ). My feeling still is that it
should simply be a double-S composite but I am happy to spend some time
to create a ligature that, as David explains, makes the intention of the
glyph clear without resorting to something utterly ugly.

I remember that at the time of the Unicode inclusion a heated debate was
raging on typophile. Opinions are wholeheartedly divided on this issue.
You write: 'Additionally I disagree with your point about "agreement to
wisdom". Currently it is "wisdom" that "a capital eszett does not
exist", despite obvious, valid and verified proof of the exact opposite
situation for at least 130 years.' Naturally, our colleagues at DIN
needed to have examples to justify the capitalised design of the Eszett
but I am not convinced that the examples that are shown in the
rationale are not created from ignorance about typography and grammar.
Interestingly, it's only been 130 years that this treatment exists
whilst the use of long- and short-s can be traced much further back
including the ligaturised version of eszett. Is that not an indicator
that these printers were misguided and overzealous? I am not saying, I
am asking.

Clearly, I am glad that no-one wants to burn me for my opinions but then
again, I have no intention to do so either. Again, my wording has come
out of passion for what I do and I simply want to state that just
because some so called authoritative orgnaisation mandates something
that we should not necessarily take it for gospel. Since we started work
on the Ubuntu font project about six or seven months ago it has grown on
me beyond just being another type design. I think we have truly created
something exciting and continue to create exciting stuff. Working with
the opensource community has been a very steep learning curve and keeps
doing so. I want to make sure that whatever comes next maintains the
highest standards of design and technical implementation whether they
are Latin glyphs or Church Glagolithic. You can be sure that there will
be many more such terse exchanges. :-)

So, soc, I totally agree that we all want the same thing - an agreeable
solution for this arguably good or bad situation. Clearly, I need to put
my words to action and start designing. And at no time, I felt insulted
or aggravated by you. This is just part and parcel of debate and
arguement. And occasionally tempers flare but history proves that often
the best things have come out of heated debate.

You can fix this issue with this open linux driver:

It does not solve it. With imap+, the Inbox folder's icon does not
disappear, but its contents are not there: Evolution says "There are no
messages in this folder." Clicking "Send/Receive" or restarting
evolution does not help.

specified below, and all I got was command not found)

Server.
It starts merrily pinging 362 servers, at about 354, it switches to a total of
356, then I get an error message that
No Suitable Download Server found
Please check your internet connection.

I have tried this twice, both wireless and wired. Rebooted in between.
My connection according to speakeasy is .74 Mb/s down/.13 Mb/s up (I am
on DSL). Connection was fine for downloading 20+ MB of updates.

I am a newbie to Linux, so if I have neglected to include information
necessary for the troubleshooting, please let me know.

I tried your suggestions, but they failed.
I noticed I was still running GRUB 1.5 and took the occasion to upgrade,
without any luck. I think it made the hybernate/sleep function work, but resume
still failed.
Eventually I found a tread
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1469340&page=17) mentioning the
possibility that an SD-card in the card reader could cause the problem and it
was in my case. Using the unmount_sd script on that page, solved the problem
completely with inserted SD-card.

It seems that the bug can have a lot of different causes and solutions.
Hopefully they all get addressed in the code soon.
Thanks for your suggestions

[Bug 672751] [NEW] USB Mass Storage I/O Error

2010-11-08 Thread Chris MacDonald
Public bug reported:

I have both Intel D945GCLF and D510MO motherboards which produce I/O
errors after running for a variable amount of time (usually inside of 72
hours). These motherboards are running with 1GB of RAM and a 4GB Micron
eUSB SSD installed with Ubuntu 10.10. The Ubuntu installation is a
server installation (no X) with Postgres and the OpenJDK JDK running my
application (both Postgres and the application run as a non-root user).

After the device has been up for a certain amount of time, I/O errors
and filesystem errors are printed to the terminal and each time the
offending sector(s) is/are different. After this, I no longer have
access to the file system and the vast majority of commands simply drop
me back to the bash prompt without any output. These errors aren't
logged in any system logs (the error attached was captured using serial
output), there is no kernel oops or panic, nor does the system reboot
but the system is rendered more or less unusable.

These errors started occurring for me with 10.04. I have several of
these devices in the field and rolling them back to 9.10 has mitigated
these errors. Since then, I've tried with 10.10 and the same errors have
occurred. It is also worth noting that I've tried with both EXT3 and
EXT4, both produce the same results. I've also set up a test case using
a SATA hard drive connected to a SATA-to-USB bridge (05e3:0718 in lsusb)
with the same results, which leads me to believe this isn't strictly a
problem with the Micron eUSB modules I'm using.

If more information is required, please let me know. I have access to
many of these devices so testing suggestions or fixes is not a problem.
I started a thread on the Ubuntu Users list a while ago, for reference
it can be found here: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
users/2010-November/233693.html

[Bug 537721] Re: AIGLX: reverting to software rendering - AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable

2010-11-08 Thread AstroPhysik
Hi,

At the 2.Nov.2010 i did the common update at synaptic and it killed my xserver.
(EE)AIGLX error: dlopen of usr/lib/dri/nouveau_viuex_dri.so could not be found
or opened.

Before that i suddenly could in GDM not log in any more, it had an
endless-loop, and jumped always back, after clicking my user..
the next day i had the (EE)AIGLX error: and the xserver died.. and i had in

.xsession-errors:
.: 34: Can't open /home/user/.profile

I found out, that on an old 10 GB hardisk (which i had installed some
month ago), there was the AIGLX error too! but without the xserver
problem i have now.

2010-11-08 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this
bug as a bug in linux.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-

[Bug 672749] [NEW] Root file descriptor limits being applied to non-root processes with higher limits

2010-11-08 Thread Quanah Gibson-Mount
Public bug reported:

We've found that with Zimbra Collaboration Suite, when we run it on
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, we often get "bad file descriptor" errors. We can
work around this by modifying limits.conf to give root a higher number
of file descriptors. However, the processes in question are running as
the zimbra user, which already have higher file descriptor limits. This
issue did not occur in Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.

Details from the java process:

1. no matter we use jdk1.5.08 or jdk1.6.22, without and with
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6593729(After failed file
close, do not repeat the close operation to close a valid file descriptor just
open) , we still see this bug.

2. I instruct source code of SocketOutputStream. when we hit the BFD exception
prior to writing to fd, fd's num is positive integer which indicate the fd is
valid,
strace did show something different for the thread hit exception,
when thread attempts to write to the output stream, the underlying trace
showing only connect without poll
 connect(1029, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(389),
sin_addr=inet_addr("127.0.0.1")}, 16) = -1 EINPROGRESS (Operation now in

while a health connection usually has a poll immediately after connect returns
EINPROGRESS.
[pid 2609] 14:43:18 connect(176, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(389),

revents=POLLOUT}])

The socket is non-blocking and the connection cannot be completed immediately.
It is possible to select(2) or poll(2) for completion by selecting the socket
for writing. After select indicates writability, use getsockopt(2) to read the
SO_ERROR option at level SOL_SOCKET to determine whether connect completed

why the poll call is missing.

3. we also experience java crash along with BFD.
https://bugzilla.zimbra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=52285#c2

5. in lab, BFD can always be worked around by raising # fd for root.

[Bug 658791] Re: Clock window appearing outside of screen when panel is vertical in Maverick

2010-11-08 Thread Kamal Mostafa
I confirm this bug also (screenshot attached).

When the clock-applet is moved to the bottom panel-bar, it does not
render its calendar/world-time popup in the correct position. Adding
multiple timezone locations seems to exacerbate the problem: the window-
height seems to be a factor.

This is a regression from Lucid -- the calendar popup worked fine on the
bottom panel-bar until upgrade to Maverick.

[Bug 672746] [NEW] kremotecontrol must depend on kdebase-workspace-bin

2010-11-08 Thread Juan Toledo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdeutils

krcdnotifier item fails when starting complaining that it couldn't find
solidremotecontrolmanager service.
This service is packed with kdebase-workspace-bin. The end result is that the
notifier icon is not shown, and when the configuration applet is manually
started with kcmshell4 kcm_remotecontrol , it complains that no remotes where
available.

Since I don't understand why anyone would like to install kremotecontrol
if it's not to actually be able to use a remote control, I believe
kremotecontrol should depend on kdebase-workspace-bin, which makes it
work.

[Bug 614303] Re: Totem Movie Player cannot Play MP4 Files - It Should at least tell the user this

[Bug 621084] Re: gir1.0-syncdaemon-1.0 should depend on gir1.0-dbus-1.0

2010-11-08 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi Rodney,

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I understood that the gir files were
language-independent and shouldn't depend on whatever python package
provides gi.repository... I just couldn't figure out what provided
gi.repository so I could manually test :)

After installing python-gobject and gir1.0-syncdaemon-1.0, without
gir1.0-dbus-1.0, I'm able to confirm that this import fails with the
maverick-updates version of the package and succeeds with the maverick-
proposed version. Flipping to verification-done.

André: No problem. I'm not a programmer, and I am generally a late

hardware. After eight years as a desktop Linux user, this was the first
problem I ever came across that someone had not already provided a
solution/workaround, so I am tickled to have finally had an opportunity
to contribute something back.

I am using a Dell Latitude D531 for e-mail, word-processing, and other

aesthetics are concerned. Without Compiz effects, it just had such a
Windows 95 feel to it, and I detest Windows period.

[Bug 672739] [NEW] no panning in Seaclear charts

version (and updates as of 5th Nov 2010) that this is still an issue.

The dapp share name appears in Rhythmbox, and you can double click it,
but get no further. There is never a password prompt window for the daap
share password to be entered into. In my case the Daap share is on a
Dlink NAS box DNS-323, firmware 1.08.

Some related things have changed in 10.10 with respect to 10.04. In
10.04, with the default install Samba Configuration, Banshee was also
unable to connect to the same daap share.

This was filed as:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/banshee/+bug/498697
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=626388
An edit was required to the "/etc/samba/smb.conf" file, for Banshee to be able
to connect. In 10.10 Banshee works without any configuration changes being
required.

[Bug 312353] Re: improper mouse hover behavior with links

2010-11-08 Thread rfugger
I just started seeing this bug in 10.10 (maverick), happens in both
firefox 3.6.11 and 3.6.12. Seems to happen when flash is loaded, or
when a javascript-heavy page is open in one of my tabs. Then, in any
tab, whenever I move the mouse, scroll, type, or hover over the location
bar, the cursor flickers between the "link finger" and the proper cursor
for the context.

[Bug 657634] Re: [GeForce GT 330M] nvidia 260.19.06-0ubuntu1 update triggers black screen on boot for sony vaio F-series

2010-11-08 Thread Jer
While I'm able to use the 256 driver, its really slow, so I'd also like
to know if there is any update on this issue. At this point the stack
traces I've seen indicate its a problem inside the nvidia driver itself.
There are also numerous other reports of this bug in different forums as
well.

[Bug 663080] Re: Google Street View doesn't work

2010-11-08 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.
There is also a vibrant support community available at
http://askubuntu.com and you might consider asking your question there.

[Bug 671222] Re: update-manager fails to start

2010-11-08 Thread Barry Warsaw
FWIW, I'm building both gconf and gnome-python in the
~pythoneers/py27stack PPA. Once that's done, I'll test upgrade-manager.

[Bug 672018] Re: The Software center says i have install the software but i didn't install the software

2010-11-08 Thread Fabio Marconi
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!
