[Bug 665796] Re: Timer interrupt freezes, system becomes sluggish

2010-11-10 Thread Kalidarn
Yes my machine also has an i7 930 in it. I have not yet checked the
interrupts during the time when the system is experiencing high cpu
system usage, but I will do so when i see it happen next (I know when
it's going to happen because the cpu widget i have jumps up from 5% to
100%) I did install htop and I noticed that my cores crazy when it
occurs, before I was using KDEs system monitor and had noticed the same
thing.

One thing I have noted is it seems to happen more when I am running a
VM, (but it does happen when I'm not as well).

Also I'm using sysfs.conf method to tell /dev/sda to use the noop
scheduler instead of CFQ as I heard that was better for SSDs. I'm using
CFQ for my other disks however.

[Bug 666211] Re: maverick on ec2 64bit ext4 deadlock

2010-11-10 Thread Jay Freeman (saurik)
Stefan,

These stack traces for pgbouncer are all in sys_write(), btw, which is
then backed by ext4. Both from what I know about how pgbouncer operates,
and from greping through its source code, the only file-backed operation
it performs is writing to its log file, which it normally does only once
a minute unless it is encountering some kind of connection failures.

It looked (and still looks) to me like the filesystem is simply locking
up. It should be noted that my dmesg log also includes another process
that got stuck: run-parts, which got blocked in a call to
sys_getdents().

Also, I looked into the AIO completion ordering change you mentioned,
and it seems totally unrelated. The author of this patch referred to a
reproduction of the bug they were fixing, which was a "you now read a
bunch of zeros when you were expecting data" race condition, not a
deadlock. In specific, operations involving "unwritten extents" would
claim to be "completed" via AIO when they were still pending: the
reordering fixed this.

[Bug 665796] Re: Timer interrupt freezes, system becomes sluggish

2010-11-10 Thread JRavasi
Kalidarn, please help us delimit the problem. From your linked thread, I
see you have nVidia, it is a match with the problem related here. What
is your CPU? Is it by any chance a Core i7? Do you see the timer
interrupt freezing in /proc/interrupts during these events? (Use 'watch
-d grep timer /proc/interrupts' to see if the timer interrupt is
working)

Currently I'm using kernel 2.6.37-rc1 from

problem happen again.

[Bug 666211] Re: maverick on ec2 64bit ext4 deadlock

2010-11-10 Thread Jay Freeman (saurik)
Stefan,

To be clear, both Timo and I were using m1.xlarge instances, which are
supposed to have four cores. (You mentioned the hardware you were
testing on only had two cores, and therefore you weren't getting the
same seemingly-bad and probably-should-be-fixed error messages.)

Also, that log was saved from two weeks ago when I was running into this
issue: the difference in Xen version could theoretically then be that
Amazon has upgraded their system since then. (I have no idea if that
even makes sense, but I figure I'll throw it out there as a
possibility.)

[Bug 666211] Re: maverick on ec2 64bit ext4 deadlock

2010-11-10 Thread Jay Freeman (saurik)
Stefan,

I'm not certain what you mean by "something not used in the common
images". To be clear, I do not even know how to make my own images.
That's not to say I'm not certain I couldn't figure it out very quickly,
but I never have as I personally do not think that is a good way of
using EC2: I instead boot stock Ubuntu images (ami-688c7801 in this
case) and then install packages on them. Currently, I do not any
"custom" software other than my Python web application: everything I
install comes from the default Ubuntu repositories.

(If required, I can provide the exact set of commands that I manually
run to setup one of these EC2 servers. Unfortunately, I have so far been
unable to fully automate the bootup of these systems as the server tends
to lock up on me while I'm doing the install, but I remember thinking it
was an unrelated issue to this one. I will do some testing of the fully
automated boot of these servers tonight and see if I can reproduce those
lockups again to see if they look at all related.)

So if you mean "am I making my own AMI that has some kind of modified
system software", the answer is "definitely not". However, while I think
that it is an amazing testament to modern engineering that I can
reinstall and reboot computers from a thousand miles away, that is a
fairly useless endeavor: the stock images are very "stock" and don't do
anything at all, as far as I know, out of the box. To be putting any
kind of load on them at all I'm certainly installing some software on
it, even if that software is just a shell script fork bomb.

In my particular case, I install apache2 with mod_python and "pgbouncer"
(from Ubuntu universe), a program from Skype that provides a PostgreSQL
pooling proxy server. My python application connects to pgbouncer (which
is listening on a named Unix socket and pretends to be PostgreSQL)
instead of directly to my database server, which then keeps its own pool
of connections to the actual database. This makes the 3200 Apache
threads that I normally have running able to rapidly get a database
connection without trying to coordinate local in-process pools.

Put differently: pgbouncer should be a fairly boring user-land process.
If you are looking at it thinking it is some kind of cool kernel task
that increases network security (maybe "bouncing" bad clients) or
something, it (maybe sadly ;P) isn't. This software is actually the
least popular (but I personally feel best ;P) choice in PostgreSQL
pooling proxy servers, an already fairly narrow niche; therefore, I
would find it highly unlikely if Timo was also using it, but maybe he
will chime in with a "yeah! pgbouncer is AWESOME!" and prove me wrong.

[Bug 460375] Re: Display goes black after 10 minutes idle despite "never" settings

2010-11-10 Thread Psy[H[]
Yes. You can then set gnome-screensaver timeout more than 10 minutes and less
than 10 minutes. And then:
"watch xset -q | grep cycle"
In both cases value there will change in the last second before time is out.
But I guess, this is insignificant, because in the end, gnome-screensaver works
(in the part where it disables X timeout).

The significant part is that X and VTs blanking is on by default.

As I have told you more than once. This bug and the printing bug forced me to
upgrade to 10.10. I know longer have an LTS installation. Most of the others
who were faced with this issue moved to OpenSuSE.

Developers need to test with the LEAST COMMON DENOMINATOR, not the highest end
possible. This bug happens for anyone with a slow bandwidth connection,
which, while it may surprise you, is roughly 3/4 of the planet.

Do what you want in closing this bug. It is in the LTS release and will be
driving the bulk of people who try KUbuntu to OpenSuSE.

[Bug 673858] [NEW] Application appears to crash on any compiz desktop effect

2010-11-10 Thread Scott Thatcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vmware-view-open-client

This bug appeared after upgrading from lucid to maverick. After running
the vmware-view client and connecting to a remote Windows instance, the
viewer will crash after any instance of a compiz desktop effect. For
example, hitting ALT-TAB to trigger window switching, or triggering the
effect to zoom out and show all desktops or the effect to scale and show
all windows on a desktop.

Actually, after turning off desktop effects, I get the same behavior
again when anything related to the window is done, including just
clicking my pointer on the window title bar.

The error I get on the command line is this: NOT_IMPLEMENTED
gtk/desktopDlg.cc:532

I'll attach a full log. Googling that error message yields the following
bug report:

http://code.google.com/p/vmware-view-open-client/issues/detail?id=86

This behavior wasn't present in lucid, where everything worked
wonderfully. Thanks for your work on this.

[Bug 665796] Re: Timer interrupt freezes, system becomes sluggish

2010-11-10 Thread Kalidarn
I have this problem with my system, initially I thought it might have
been KDE as I was using Gnome in 10.04. I later found that the same
thing occurred when using fluxbox so it obviously wasn't KDE related.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10032443 For me I found it
happened more when I had a virtual machine running (but it did still
occur when no VM was running.)

[Bug 673850] [NEW] Add rtmp support to ffmpeg

2010-11-10 Thread John Ferlito
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ffmpeg

FFmpeg on ubuntu is not currently compiled with rtmp support. Maverick
and Natty now both contain the rtmpdump package so it would be nice if
this was added.

Simple needs the compile flag added in. Interestingly this is actually
being removed for some reason (probably historical) since the debian
package does have it enabled

[Bug 673851] [NEW] altgr layer stops working randomly

2010-11-10 Thread holtzermann17
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

The issue is reported by a few users in the ubuntu forums in the thread "Custom
keyboard map is causing issue with stuck keys"
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10100583#post10100583). It seems
that the AltGr layer can get stuck in either an "always-on" or "never-works"
mode. I experience the latter problem, so for example, given the assignment

keycode 39 = o O Left

I would expect Mode_switch+o to result in Left, but instead it results
in o.

I've experienced the same results under Gnome and under Ratpoison in
Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10.

[Bug 668561] Re: boot busybox kernel panic load error

2010-11-10 Thread Richard Rath
I had this problem and kainbox's solution #18 at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1601810&page=2 worked for me.
downloaded slax live cd, which does not try to mount anything, then ran
e2fsck -y -f -v /dev/sda2 and got the system back next boot. NB: had to
copy files from the slax dir on slax cd over to a hard drive first.

2010-11-10 Thread Maciej Puzio
For those for whom workarounds in comments #8 and #13 do not work and
who use autofs, there is a separate Upstart-induced problem related to
statd: it races not only with mountall, but also with autofs. Bug 573919
has more information. Autofs users should also see bug 579858 if they
wish to have their local drives cleanly unmounted on shutdown.

Binary package hint: software-center

As you can see from the screenshot, the "Recommended" section in Ubuntu
Software Center is not tall enough to fit all application names. This
doesn't make Software Center unusable, but disrupts the user experience.

[Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2010-11-10 Thread NoOp
Got it working; had to remove the driver via jockey, reinstall compiz,
re-enable the driver via jockey, reboot & re-enable 'Visual Effects -
Extra', and reset the compiz settings via the compiz settings manager. I
now get the expected compiz bells & whistles (rotating desktops etc.,
etc). Thanks Darik. Perhaps Ubuntu could assign this to you for final
packaging?

Hi Alberto - sorry for bouncing this around, but I think it actually belongs

[Bug 673845] [NEW] snd-*-oss modules are not present, so this package does nothing

2010-11-10 Thread pipegeek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: oss-compat

The kernel ALSA-OSS compatibility layer seems not to be being built for
maverick kernels. I'd really love to have it back (if they haven't
removed it upstream), but in the mean time, this means the oss-compat
package is broken. Particularly ugly since the package description says
that it's there to fix the "cannot open /dev/dsp" problem for confused
new users... a bunch of warnings about failed modprobes seems like the
kind of thing that would further confuse new users.

[Bug 673846] [NEW] [Realtek ALC268] Recording problem

2010-11-10 Thread manuel
Public bug reported:

Sound recording does not work in acer One, like muted but it isn't.

As far as I understand, it was working but too as low input level; after
I enter in sound preferences and increse input level in sound control it
stop working, doesn't rec.

My box has 2 distros w/ independent home fs; i've booted in linux mint
and the mic works, low level again, and stop working after I do select
to increase input level

I do delete ~/.pulse/* but it does not rollback changes
