Re: [Bug 663788] Re: "Extra" visual effects are reverted to "none" at random or when going into compiz settings manager
@Simon Hey there, thanks for your notice. I get contrasting conclusions from your news... should be the 965 "unsupported", the visual effects shouldn't kick in at all because of these checks (Which I didn't alter in any way...), while right after boot, and at least for several seconds (!!) the full extra desktop effects are in place. There are also occurences like last time I used my laptop, where I was able to use the desktop effects for the whole session, doing the same things I normally do when they are instead disabled "on the fly". Also, from my understanding, even considering the limitations of my graphic chipset (who wouldn't consider them :( ), since desktop effects worked fully in Lucid, no matter the low end limited card, them not working under maverick should indicate a "weakness" in the compiz software. Anyway you just shortened my hopes of somehow solving the problem with reinstalling from scratch. I know I will probably do that with 11.04 though. -- "Extra" visual effects are reverted to "none" at random or when going into compiz settings manager https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/663788 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 676972] Re: pidgin does not connect to msn, certificate error
I'm surprised that this bug blocking MSN chat doesn't have top but only medium importance. It could turn many people away from Ubuntu. I'm surprised not to find a pidgin update already in Ubuntu's depot for the general user. All it takes is repackaging with two added certificates in /usr/share/purple/ca-certs/ As it is my opinion that general users should find, without reading all this, a clear howto to solve their problem, I have updated the description. I have tested that procedure carefully. ** Description changed: When attempting to connect to MSN, Pidgin fails to load the contact list, citing an issue with the SSL certificate of omega.contacts.msn.com. This happened due to Microsoft renewing both the omega.contacts.msn.com certificate, as well as their certification authority certificate "Microsoft Secure Server Authority". Hence, the certificate in /usr/share/purple/ca- certs/Microsoft_Secure_Server_Authority.pem is outdated. In addition, the transition from the old to the new certificate is not complete, only half-done, so a simple workaround of updating the certificate would not work. Both the old and new certificates have to be included. Debdiffs for natty and maverick are attached. TEST CASE: 1. Start Pidgin 2. Click Tools->Certificates 3. Delete the omega.contacts.msn.com certificate 4. Try connecting to a MSN messenger account 5. [Bug 527458] Re: please include status messages/tooltips
I can see various pros and cons of the situation. What I would love is not intentionally limiting customization. Seems that each new version of ubuntu core UI functions get changed in an attempt to make the interface better, but I caution against making it really hard for users to switch or customize. It's also driving me nuts that I can't just roll the mouse past the battery indicator to check the time estimate/percentage. Clicking twice to see something so seemingly simple is a little absurd. I would really love the option to just show the data in the toolbar when on battery if I have the space too. Or that the new indicator applet shows 1 red bar when I'm at 100% battery (seems to be a bug #405148), when the old tools worked great. With the new indicator system I still have figured out how to check my apc ups status without having to go to the cli apcaccess, used to be able to use gapcmon docked in the panel. One possible way forward is to default to the custom variants of gnome for ubuntu but to also have an alternative package that keeps more of the expected gnome behavior. -- please include status messages/tooltips https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/527458 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes
Success! For my version of this problem: "My version ONLY freezes the mouse pointer and then stops responding to any subsequent USB mice randomly after I plug them in, also in a few cases, after having 3 mice stop responding in succession, the USB KB also stopped responding. In all cases the System is still stable and responds to remote axx. I NEVER experience high CPU usage, Video driver corruption problems or app or X crashes with this version of the freeze bug." On my Lucid install with the 2.6.32-25 Kernel, adding "acpi=force irqpoll" stops the freeze problem (3 days uptime so far). After another couple of days of uptime to be sure, I will try "acpi=force irqpoll" on my 10.10 install and report on the result. -- Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Plus, there's some video corruption of the ubuntu logo during bootup and shutdown. So, I thought I'd try turning off kernel mode setting (KMS). I'm running grub2. In /etc/default/grub, I replaced this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" with this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" Now, resuming from suspend seems to work perfectly. I'm not sure whether there's a performance hit by not using KMS. Is nomodeset the default when installing Maverick on older AGP radeon systems like these? Should it be in Natty? [Bug 673236] Re: maverick toolchain producing unbootable (hanging) kernels
Ok, I've found the problem. Binutils changed the meaning of symbol assignments in linker scripts. It is actually documented, but rather obscurely in /usr/share/doc/binutils/ld/NEWS.gz. This breaks the relocation of "jiffies". It also makes got.plt go away in each vdso (a small improvement). This means there *isn't* a binutils bug. Re: [Bug 635181] Re: High load average on Lucid for nominal/idle system use
Yes, the solution is: Fedora core 13, or 14. Since I installed FC13 XFCE on the parent host (home and work), and using GNOME FC13/14 on guests things have been normal. Today, 11/24, I rzipped several 4-9GB files in the 'parent' os. No problem. No sluggish display. No guests "freezing" for several seconds. Load averages of 4 and not ++(++(++10)). I may take a gander at Ubuntu when the next LTS release comes out. That may give me enough healing time to see that +5 months of my life wasted is not such a long time. Heck it is better than 5 months in jail. 10.04 is/was a colossal waste of (my) time and energy. The problem may persist, but for what I care at this point... After giving up on Ubuntu in late September, I had enough free time, not to mention faster hosts, in October/November to download and play with Hercules, vm370\mvs-380 and music/sp on my home system (guest FC14). I have had better support in the yahoo group for those products than the 'drive by' RTFM shouts on here. I might even try z/Linux. It took almost two months for anyone (you) to notice on here to close the case.I need to redo the mapping in my brain for apt-get install to yum -y install. Otherwise the transition is less than it takes to get used to AIX from Solaris. Have a nice day On 2010-11-24 02:29, imagine wrote: > Hi Chris, > > why should it be closed? I have reproduced the crash. I had to set the SSH path as my import directory and restart Shotwell. As an interim fix, I recommend changing your import directory to a local path. You can use gconftool to do this: $ gconftool -s --type=string /apps/shotwell/preferences/files/import_dir "/home/jim/Pictures" -- Shotwell crashes if linked to files over ssh with ERROR:DirectoryMonitor.vala:510 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/675068 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 395692] Re: Drag-and-Drop behavior in the menu editor is inconsistent and confusing
Robert: thanks for your work here! I've provided a (non-Alacarte developer) review of the patch on the bug upstream; the patch looks correct and fixes a real bug. I've also updated the debdiff to apply to the current Natty package, and attached it here. ** Patch added: "Debdiff, updated to apply to current Natty package." https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/395692/+attachment/1744221/+files/updated-patch.debdiff -- Drag-and-Drop behavior in the menu editor is inconsistent and confusing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395692 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 677696] Re: Synaptics Touchpad not working in Ubuntu 10.10
@ Kamal It seems that bug is probably in linux rather than in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics.
