[Bug 720134] [NEW] four sections in the launcher

2011-02-16 Thread Omer Akram
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

in current form there are four sections in the launcher.

1. applications
2. places
3. disks/drives
4. trash

launchers from one category cannot be put into other, there should not
be more than two sections, doesn't feel good. I also am not aware if the
current behavior is a bug or intended.

[Bug 704597] Re: Depend on nvidia-common

2011-02-16 Thread Brandon Snider
should it be possible to remove nvidia-common and install the upstream
driver? I think it should.

I disagree. The changes to the nvidia packaging scripts that happened
starting with Lucid were not done just to clean them up (the old ones
were messy) -- they were done to make it safer and easier to switch
between drivers when necessary. It is known that the nvidia-installer
actually overwrites and destroys some xorg/mesa files. Now, as long as
the user continues to use the nvidia-installer forever this is no
problem. But if they ever want to switch to Nouveau or Vesa or whatever
(maybe they change graphics cards) they may actually have to do a
wipe/reload.

The nvidia-installer is a blunt-force instrument whose purpose is to get
its driver working to the exclusion of everything that might dare to
stand in its way. My belief is that most users do not understand any of
this and are doing dangerous things, they wrongly believe are trivial,
without understanding the implications of their actions.

The Mandriva/Ubuntu packaging scripts make it easy and safe to switch
between drivers without overwriting anything, just with a couple of
clicks. Now, all of that said, if someone has gone to the trouble of
researching the command-line override that I mentioned earlier, they're
still going to damage their system by using the nvidia-installer, but at
least they know that.

Nvidia itself seems to be aware of all of this and doesn't recommend
using its installer:

[Bug 534629] Re: AssumeDefaultDomain does not work

2011-02-16 Thread Eric Williams
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: likewise-open

Setting AssumeDefaultDomain=dword:0001 does not work with
  likewise-open 5.4.0.39949-3 on Ubuntu 10.04 (development branch) 64 bit.

+ IMPACT STATEMENT
+
+
+ Many Likewise Open prefer to set AssumeDefaultDomain, as it make the
+ users/groups name more consistent with local one. It is particularly
+ true in deployment where there is a single domain, where prepending the
+ domain name would be somewhat redundant anyway.
+
+ Moreover, this is a regression. People upgrading to a version of
+ likewise-open where the AssumeDefaultDomain work as expected will find
+ their user/group names have changed, and that they now need to prepend
+ them with the domain name and separator.
+
+
+ TEST CASE
+ =
+
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install likewise-open, join domain.
  2. Check likewise behavior: getent passwd domain\\testuser returns
information, getent passwd testuser does not.
- 2. Change AssumeDefaultDomain to dword:0001 in
/etc/likewise-open/lsassd.reg
- 3. Run lwregshell import /etc/likewise-open/lsassd.reg
- 4. Run lw-refresh-configuration
- 5. Check behavior again: getent passwd testuser does not return information
while it now should...
+ 3. Change AssumeDefaultDomain to dword:0001 in
/etc/likewise-open/lsassd.reg
+ 4. Run lwregshell import /etc/likewise-open/lsassd.reg
+ 5. Run lw-refresh-configuration
+ 6. Check behavior again: getent passwd testuser should return information

[Bug 720142] [NEW] regression: modem-manager fails to connect to huawei e161 in maverick

2011-02-16 Thread aexl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: modemmanager

my huawei e161 won't work anymore under current kubuntu maverick with
network-manager.
no problems at all last summer with lucid, then i didn't use it for some time
so i can't tell when the regression happened.

using trunk build according to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingModemmanager seems not to change
anything (logs with [logger remarks] attached).

observation: mm-test shows a line
Error enabling modem: org.freedesktop.ModemManager.Modem.Gsm.SimPinRequired:
SIM PIN required

syslog has a similar line.

nm has the correct pin (which always worked, no changes), which shows up in
syslog.
using the sim with that pin in another mobil yields success.

i'm fine with testing patches.

[Bug 720139] [NEW] Kernel meta packages are built for wrong architectures.

2011-02-16 Thread Tim Gardner

Some kernel meta packages are built for architectures for which the
dependent packages do not exist. For example, linux-backports-modules-

associated meta package linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-server is
built for amd64 _and_ i386.

[Bug 583122] Re: firefox occasionally highlights contents of form fields while typing thereby overwriting previously entered keystrokes

2011-02-16 Thread fyo
I'm affected by this bug as well. It does NOT appear to happen unless my
computer has been inactive (screensaver, at least).

I have not been able to replicate the tab requirements. That is, I
have experienced the bug without tabbing between fields.

For some reason, opening Ubuntu's Keyboard Shortcuts application
CONSISTENTLY causes the behavior to revert to normal (that is, when I'm
experiencing the bug, I can launch Keyboard Shortcuts, shut it down
without doing anything, and then FF is back to normal).

I've observed this bug on two different systems with different versions
of FF and Ubuntu. Only addons are the default Ubuntu ones.

Well actually .. while the kernel message also refers to an unhandled

either a different issue with similar results, or possibly valuable new

[Bug 611474] Re: Boot fails with busybox prompt using LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068E PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS [1000:0058] (rev 08) SAS Disk Controller

2011-02-16 Thread Adam Dorsey
We have the same issue on the Dell Precision T7500. Interestingly, it
used to work with an earlier kernel, as we have been running this
machine on Lucid without flaws for months. After a planned outage, we
started getting Gave up waiting for root device on boot, and a prompt
to busybox. The bootdelay=60 doesn't work for us either.

The main issue that I am seeing is that the disk comes up, but the
/dev/disk/by-uuid directory is missing. Since Grub is looking for root
via UUID, the boot fails. If I change root to root=/dev/sda1 it comes
up, but hangs later because it still wants to mount all the partitions
by UUID and the directory is still gone. Again, this is a new issue
from one of the later kernels.

[Bug 713137] Re: installing many software

2011-02-16 Thread Ngassam Nkwenga
why it is on a wishlist ?

I think it is a bug when something is not efficient, and that is a case.

Software center need to replace Synaptic , but synaptic does it better. I think
from this point of view it is a regression for the Software Center. why do we
have to wait for one application install before downloading the next one or
two on the queue ?
Guys, you have done great thing with the Software Center , but this one is
really an issue. For one application's installation is it ok, but for multiple
installation it is just a vaste of time.
Please do think about it.
I love the Center but because of it , I ( and may be many others) continue to
use synaptic or apt-get in command Line

[Bug 715820] Re: No tooltip for disconnect button

2011-02-16 Thread Naty Bidart
Hi Chris!

Thanks for taking the time to help us. My nick is nessita and you can
ping me in #ubuntuone at freenode. To propose a branch against the
project, you should:

* branch the project's trunk

bzr branch lp:ubuntuone-control-panel a branch name

* code tests, run tests with:
 - the whole suite: ./run-tests
 - a specific test or test suite or test file: u1trial [-t test pattern
regex] test filename

For example, to run all the tests for the UI:

u1trial ubuntuone/controlpanel/gtk/tests/test_gui.py

(you can find several examples of UI testing in that file)

* commit attaching the bug number to your commit:

bzr ci --fixes=lp:bug number

* push to the project, something like:

bzr push lp:~chris/ubuntuone-control-panel/branch name

Let me know if you need something else!

[Bug 720139] Re: Kernel meta packages are built for wrong architectures.

2011-02-16 Thread Tim Gardner
SRU Justification

Impact: extraneous meta packages make CDROM/DVD creation difficult
because of uninstallable packages.

 Feb 15 15:01:22 cjwatson $ rmadison -s lucid-updates
linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-server
 Feb 15 15:01:22 cjwatson linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-server
| 2.6.32.28.32 | lucid-updates | amd64, i386
 Feb 15 15:01:29 cjwatson $ rmadison -s lucid-updates

 Feb 15 15:01:32 cjwatson
linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.34-2.6.32-28-server | 2.6.32-28.27
| lucid-updates | amd64
Feb 15 15:01:57 cjwatson there we see a difference, the underlying
-server package is only built for amd64
Feb 15 15:02:13 cjwatson similar situation for generic-pae
 Feb 15 15:02:23 cjwatson $ rmadison -s lucid-updates

linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.34-2.6.32-28-generic-pae |
2.6.32-28.27 | lucid-updates | i386
Feb 15 15:02:43 cjwatson so I diagnose the problem here as being that
the metapackages are just built for architectures where they shouldn't be
Feb 15 15:03:19 cjwatson this is essentially harmless - the
metapackages (linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-server/i386 and
linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic-pae/amd64) are uninstallable on
those architectures, but they're actually just supposed to be absent
Feb 15 15:03:52 cjwatson annoying and certainly a bug but not really a
big deal, I think

[Bug 719725] Re: Newer Version Available

2011-02-16 Thread Bhavani Shankar
hey tarun,

point 1 is since its a new upstream version it should be error or
warning free wrt lintian

point 4 is machine-readable copyright format which is best addressed in
debian I guess

so as I said in comment 1 above its best to track the package status in
mentors.d.n and debian-mentors if there is a discussion on the list
about the package

As far as IRC is concerned mate I ve to run early to work tomorrow :)

so I wont be available on IRC much during weekdays

[Bug 720167] [NEW] External CD-rom trouble mounting

Public bug reported:

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Asus EeePC. I was recently

[Bug 720165] [NEW] could not connect to any service without port configuration

2011-02-16 Thread Ngassam Nkwenga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

I'm on a shared Wlan, so I don't have any right to access the port
configuration,
I have an account to internetcalls but i can't get connected to this sip.
I have an account too but the issue is the same : can't get connected to
ekiga.net
the message reported by ekiga is that we have to set the network configuration
manually, but what if we don't have any access to the network configuration ?
should we simply dropped ekiga ? it is not the best solution, Ekiga should not
strongly depend on port configuration.

I have tested it both on Maverick and Natty, the issue is the same.
I have no Lan access so I could try it.

[Bug 503029] Re: Does not lock desktop, if run by keyboard shortcut or by a launcher in Xfce, if not run in terminal

2011-02-16 Thread williamts99
This bug affects me also. I worked around it by creating a bash script and
called that from the keyboard shortcut.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10457105postcount=4

Lets create a new file in /usr/local/bin called lockwithaview and open it with
gedit:
Code:
sudo gedit /usr/local/bin/lockwithaview

It should contain the following(cut and paste):
Code:
#!/bin/bash
sleep 1 xtrlock

Save the file and close gedit, then make it executable:
Code:
sudo chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/lockwithaview

Create a keyboard shortcut to execute lockwithaview(I used ctrl+alt+k)
and you are finished.

[Bug 465942] Re: Hardware device disappearing from Sound Preferences on ASUS 0x104381b3

2011-02-16 Thread Steve Conklin
This patch may be re-applied for a future release if requested.

In order for this patch to be reapplied it needs to be proposed again
through the normal SRU process (kernel mailing list and proper acks).
Patches which are reverted due to lack of verification are not
automatically reapplied since it is the responsibility of the submitter
to insure that testing resources are in place and ready to test the fix
in an upcoming -proposed kernel.

Thanks
