[Bug 686066] Re: system monitor applet should have appindicator support

2011-02-17 Thread Adam Dingle
I'm also sorely missing a system monitor applet for Unity. An indicator
applet might be OK. As another approach, perhaps System Monitor could
show a graph indicating CPU activity inside its icon in the Unity
Launcher. (That's how it works on a Mac, by the way.)

[Bug 720887] [NEW] Authentication failure with correct credentials

2011-02-17 Thread Andrew
Public bug reported:

After recent updates, I am no longer able to directly VNC to a RHEL5
(Oracle Linux) machine.

If I VNC directly to the machine, I get an authentication failure, but
if I SSH tunnel to the box and use 127.0.0.1, it works.

Client output:

xvnc4viewer remote-box-rhel5:1

VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.1 for X - built Apr 9 2010 15:52:37
Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd.
See http://www.realvnc.com for information on VNC.

This is the log from Xvnc on the server:
Thu Feb 17 11:40:49 2011
 Connections: accepted: 10.10.10.10::55574
SConnection: Client needs protocol version 3.8

Now, if I start ssh on the client:
ssh remote-box-rhel5 -N -L 5909:localhost:5909 &

Then vnc to the server using localhost it works. Command:
vncviewer 127.0.0.1:9

This just started happening to me yesterday. I am on maverick with
maverick-updates, maverick-backports, maverick-security and maverick-
proposed being installed.

Re: [Bug 719448] Re: The "once" parameter does not work with "-boot"

2011-02-17 Thread Deric Sullivan
Hi Serge,

 Thanks for looking into this.

I am using amd64 so I'll try out the fix.
Using "once" did not work for me even if there wasn't a valid OS on
the hard drive.
I'm OK with an importance of "low", I was using the workaround of
simply stopping the qemu-kvm after the first boot of "-boot order=n" and
starting it again with "-boot order=c". I'll check out your workaround
of "-boot priority=cn" although I was not even aware of the "priority"
parameter - I don't see it in the man page.

Thanks,
Deric

[Bug 720883] [NEW] evolution is slow in retrieving messages from microsoft exchange

Hi,
I am using Ubuntu 10.10 amd64. I use Evolution for retrieving emails from my MS

When a new message arrives in Evolution, it takes for ever to retrieve the

[Bug 720880] [NEW] Mumble causes the Unity Launcher to hang

2011-02-17 Thread Jono Bacon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Mumble has often caused issues for me in Unity Maverick, but in Unity in
Natty when I start Mumble the launcher appears and occasionally auto-
hides as expected, but if I click on the Launcher it appears it has hung
and my clicks act as if the Launcher is not there and appear in the
window underneath it (e.g. if I have a text box underneath the Launcher
in Firefox and I click an icon on the Launcher the click does not launch
the icon, but instead registers in the textbox underneath).

I have only noticed Mumble causing the Launcher to hang like this.

[Bug 600524] Re: battery always shows empty

2011-02-17 Thread spbrereton
I'm not sure I agree with it being xface4-battery-plugin. I have the
same issue in Gnome. As well as the other commonly reported issue that
because the system doesn't correctly report the discharging of the
battery the system will just shut off when the battery runs out -
despite the battery level low/critical warning/action settings..

I too have a MacBook - Pro 2.2 Aluminium and this bug makes it quite
unusable as a laptop because I have simply no idea if the battery will
last 40 minutes or 4 seconds. it's very poor.

[Bug 719446] Re: systematic freezes on any kernel version post 2.6.35-22

2011-02-17 Thread Dave Gilbert
Well, if you could get the exact text of that error it might help; but
probably the best thing is if I give you the standard response asking
you to try the new kernels being developed - if you can give it a go it
would be good to know if they fix it or if they give any
different/better diagnostics

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release
of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run
the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal).
It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
report.

apport-collect -p linux 719446

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

2011-02-17 Thread Stefan Bader
Ok, so this is not really something conclusive yet, but it seems to me
(when playing with that locally) that for that memory allocations to
grow, there is no actual file transfer needed. Just looping through
doing a connect and immediately disconnect again showed those 2M chunks
growing. So I guess I can concentrate on that area further on.

Re: [Bug 720833] Re: *** NSPlugin Viewer runaway errors are causing .xsession-errors file to fill hard drive partition

2011-02-17 Thread Doug Morse
Hi Marc,

Certainly, and again I realize I was reporting something out-of-band (i.e.,
non-security). I do hope you pass this report along to others within (or
associated with) Canonical who handle higher-urgency, non-security matters,
just as a "heads up" of a potential problem that might have adverse widescale
impact. Obviously, it's unclear at this point if the problem was a one-time
occurrence (e.g., perhaps related to a particular website) or perhaps specific
to something about my configuration, or in the worst case something about which
you all are about to flooded with very unhappy users. It's this latter
possibility that I'm concerned about. As for me, I can certainly handle this
issue by just keeping an eye on my .xsession-error files and/or disable the
Flash plugin and/or npviewer altogether if need be. It's the less technical
Ubuntu user who I'm concerned about who might suddenly find themselves with a
full /home partition and suddenly and unexpectedly not be able to wor
k and not understand why or what to do about it. Best to be proactive about
such things IMO.

Anyway, best regards and thanks for all you do!

Cheers,
Doug

There is no fix for that and there never will be because that is
intended and is hardware coded (as in; not in the software/driver).
Imagine if you are playing music very loud and you quickly need to mute?
What are you going to do? Push the Mute button once? Probably not...
Most people would push it repeatedly. No? :)

[Bug 338722] Re: screen-profiles does not update gnome-terminal title

2011-02-17 Thread SuprChrgd
not for nothin, but I was playing around today with byobu 3.27 from the
PPA and found that setting "hardstatus alwayslastline" affects this.

1. Set my .screenrc as suggested to mimic Redhat's screen config
2. Tested and saw that it works
3. Set "hardstatus alwayslastline" and test, watch it not work

A interesting side-effect, setting up .screenrc as suggested (or moving
this into the byobu profile) is if you remove "hardstatus
alwayslastline" from the byobu common profile
(/usr/share/byobu/profiles/common" the hardstatus is displayed in gnome-
terminal titlebar. See attached screenshot.

So I have it set up this way:
.screenrc
termcapinfo xterm 'hs:ts=\E]2;:fs=\007:ds=\E]2;screen\007'

/usr/share/byobu/profiles/common
... 1, 2, skip a few ...
#hardstatus alwayslastline
... 3, 4, skip some more ...
hardstatus string '[%n%?: %t%?] (REST OF ORIGINAL HARDSTATUS)'

[Bug 702969] Re: connections started with HSUPA modems are unstable

2011-02-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Marking Incomplete: there is no way we can figure out what is wrong with
the information provided.

Please re-try this in an environment where signal levels will be higher;
the issues you see are most likely due to low signal and signal loss.

Also note that using wvdial and NetworkManager/ModemManager (the NM
applet in general) may be causing issues with both fighting to control
the modem device. You may want to disable NetworkManager while you use
wvdial, or using NetworkManager directly.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

[Bug 680444] Re: dbus-daemon eats 100% cpu and is not responsive

2011-02-17 Thread Michael Weishaar
I've seen dbus-daemon run amok on several occasions.
I have nebomuk disabled, but I've seen these running anyway:
/usr/bin/nepomukserver
/usr/bin/akonadi_nepomuk_contact_feeder --identifier
akonadi_nepomuk_contact_feeder

On one occasion, killing these brought the CPU back down to normal
On another occasion, it didn't.

Logging out and back in always corrects it.

[Bug 518508] Re: on occasion, waking from suspend doesn't prompt for password

The problem with the type of fix you are suggesting is that a lot of
people simply close their laptop lid and put it in their laptop bag. If
suspend aborted because of a gnome-screensaver failure, they could run
the risk of overheating their laptop and possibly damaging it.

[Bug 720863] [NEW] Maverick slow and flaky after first login

2011-02-17 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
Public bug reported:

Shortly before Christmas, I bought a brand new gaming computer for dual-
booting Win7 and Ubuntu. After testing the 64-bit Maverick live CD and
finding it flaky, mildly put, I still opted to install it on a dedicated
hard drive as planned. After enabling the proprietary Nvidia drivers
installing the regular updates, adding the Ubuntu X-swat PPA and
generally stretching both my patience and my imagination as far as I
can, I'm left with one very annoying problem:

To start with, the first login after boot is notably slower than
subsequent ones. I mention this because it might be related to the real
problem, which is that the first time I've logged in after each boot, my
desktop's multitasking capability seems to be gone. If I open a link
from Gwibber or from an email, my browser opening will steal the focus
entirely and I'm not able to switch between windows or even move any
window (including the browser window) until the browser has been closed
(sometimes requiring Ctrl-Q as I can't use the menus). Going on for a
while, the whole desktop will eventually freeze. If left alone for
sufficiently long, It might recognize my next command but at that point,
I've usually lost my patience and restarted the machine (Ctr-Alt-Del
strangely always works).

The only workaroyund I've found is to log in the first time after boot,
then log out, then log in again. The second login is blistering fast and
the desktop is super-responsive with no further problems. Very odd in my
opinion.

I've tried to reinstall Ubuntu without any improvement. I've tried to
run the 32-bit Live CD but it's just as flaky as the 64-bit. Linux Mint
Live is just as flaky as Ubuntu, and Fedora 14 live doesn't even boot
although it runs super-fast under Virtual Box (as does Ubuntu 10.10...)
An old Xubuntu 9.04 Live CD is the first thing in my collection that
boots without problems.

Is this all about having too shiny new hardware? I've got an Asus
P7P55D-E LX motherboard, A Core i5 processor, and an Nvidia GTX460
graphics card. Anybody with similar experiences and perhaps a tip,
please let me hear from you.

1. First try to run the command
sudo apt-get -f install
if everything is fine then leave from there.

if it is not fixed then try to do this.

I think you're right. I saw the urlparse patch, but due to just reading
the patch thought it only applied to S3_URL, not EC2_URL.

I'll try cherry-picking the urlparse changes back to ubuntu.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

ldap users can get a session on the machine without a password. That is,
if a user exists in LDAP they can log in to the machine by hitting the
return key when asked for a password; this does not work for local
users, nor can you make up an ID and expect it to work. BTW, if you give
it a wrong password, you can't get a session (as in you get an "LDAP
authentication failed" message).

What I expected to happen: try to log in to a machine using LDAP authentication
and get stopped when I provide bad credentials (e.g. good username, bad - or no
- password).
What happened: on a lightly configured machine I can log in using a good
username from LDAP and *no* password.
Security implications: if "user A" tries to log in with LDAP id "user B",
"user A" can access all of the data stored on the local machine by "user B" -
and they don't need a password to do it.

I can reliably replicate this problem (and have done at least 10 times in a VM):
1) apt-get install nslcd (libpam-ldapd, libnss-ldapd and nscd are dependencies,
so they get installed as well)
2) during configuration, provide debconf with basic info about our LDAP setup
(in my case connect to a SunLDAP server).
3) add config info to nslcd.conf to allow connections (in my case it needs a
specific certificate, so I add tls_cacertfile /path/to/dot-pem-file)

The nsswitch.conf and nscd.conf files don't need to be edited at all,
and the debconf configuration done by Ubuntu seems to be good enough to
allow connections.

At this point I restart the machine and try to log in as an LDAP user.
When asked for a password I hit [enter] and I get a session. This user
has never used the machine before and is not a duplicate of a local
username. The uid of the LDAP user is correct (that is, the uid is
passed to the local machine by the LDAP server and is not locally
assigned.)

As the LDAP user, I can su to any other LDAP ID without a password (just
hit [enter] when asked for a password). I *cannot* su to a local user.

I've been in touch with the nslcd developer via the nss-pam-ldapd-users
list (thread here: http://lists.arthurdejong.org/nss-pam-ldapd-
users/2011/msg00026.html - includes debug info). His response suggests
that newer versions of nslcd address this kind of problem directly (see
thread), so I tried installing the 11.04 packages (v0.7.13) in my 10.10
test box, and I no longer have the problem.

It *appears* that newer releases (likely 0.7.7+) fix my problem. Is
there any way to address this problem in Maverick?

[Bug 711442] Re: vinagre crashed with SIGSEGV in g_socket_send()

2011-02-17 Thread Scott Moser
I'm not able reproduce this, just successfully connected to a vnc4server
vncserver running in 10.04 using vinagre 2.30.3-1ubuntu2.

That doesn't mean its not a bug, though.

@Jean-Louis,
  A few things things.
a.) Thanks for taking the time to open the bug and find a fix!
b.) the vinagre package uses quilt for patches. You should apply your changes
by adding a patch to debian/patches and debian/patches/series
c.) The patch should ideally be in DEP-3 format

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.
