Hi Serge, Thanks for looking into this. I am using amd64 so I'll try out the fix. Using "once" did not work for me even if there wasn't a valid OS on the hard drive. [Bug 720880] [NEW] Mumble causes the Unity Launcher to hang
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity Mumble has often caused issues for me in Unity Maverick, but in Unity in Natty when I start Mumble the launcher appears and occasionally auto- hides as expected, but if I click on the Launcher it appears it has hung and my clicks act as if the Launcher is not there and appear in the window underneath it (e.g. if I have a text box underneath the Launcher in Firefox and I click an icon on the Launcher the click does not launch the icon, but instead registers in the textbox underneath). I have only noticed Mumble causing the Launcher to hang like this. I'm not sure I agree with it being xface4-battery-plugin. I have the same issue in Gnome. [Bug 719446] Re: systematic freezes on any kernel version post 2.6.35-22
Well, if you could get the exact text of that error it might help; but probably the best thing is if I give you the standard response asking you to try the new kernels being developed - if you can give it a go it would be good to know if they fix it or if they give any different/better diagnostics Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux 719446 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Re: [Bug 720833] Re: *** NSPlugin Viewer runaway errors are causing .xsession-errors file to fill hard drive partition
Hi Marc, Certainly, and again I realize I was reporting something out-of-band (i.e., non-security). I do hope you pass this report along to others within (or associated with) Canonical who handle higher-urgency, non-security matters, just as a "heads up" of a potential problem that might have adverse widescale impact. Obviously, it's unclear at this point if the problem was a one-time occurrence (e.g., perhaps related to a particular website) or perhaps specific to something about my configuration, or in the worst case something about which you all are about to flooded with very unhappy users. It's this latter possibility that I'm concerned about. As for me, I can certainly handle this issue by just keeping an eye on my .xsession-error files and/or disable the Flash plugin and/or npviewer altogether if need be. It's the less technical Ubuntu user who I'm concerned about who might suddenly find themselves with a full /home partition and suddenly and unexpectedly not be able to wor k and not understand why or what to do about it. Best to be proactive about such things IMO. Anyway, best regards and thanks for all you do! The problem with the type of fix you are suggesting is that a lot of people simply close their laptop lid and put it in their laptop bag. [Bug 720863] [NEW] Maverick slow and flaky after first login
Public bug reported: Shortly before Christmas, I bought a brand new gaming computer for dual- booting Win7 and Ubuntu. After testing the 64-bit Maverick live CD and finding it flaky, mildly put, I still opted to install it on a dedicated hard drive as planned. After enabling the proprietary Nvidia drivers installing the regular updates, adding the Ubuntu X-swat PPA and generally stretching both my patience and my imagination as far as I can, I'm left with one very annoying problem: To start with, the first login after boot is notably slower than subsequent ones. I mention this because it might be related to the real problem, which is that the first time I've logged in after each boot, my desktop's multitasking capability seems to be gone. If I open a link from Gwibber or from an email, my browser opening will steal the focus entirely and I'm not able to switch between windows or even move any window (including the browser window) until the browser has been closed (sometimes requiring Ctrl-Q as I can't use the menus). Going on for a while, the whole desktop will eventually freeze. If left alone for sufficiently long, It might recognize my next command but at that point, I've usually lost my patience and restarted the machine (Ctr-Alt-Del strangely always works). The only workaroyund I've found is to log in the first time after boot, then log out, then log in again. The second login is blistering fast and the desktop is super-responsive with no further problems. Very odd in my opinion. I've tried to reinstall Ubuntu without any improvement. I've tried to run the 32-bit Live CD but it's just as flaky as the 64-bit. Linux Mint Live is just as flaky as Ubuntu, and Fedora 14 live doesn't even boot although it runs super-fast under Virtual Box (as does Ubuntu 10.10...) An old Xubuntu 9.04 Live CD is the first thing in my collection that boots without problems. Is this all about having too shiny new hardware? I've got an Asus P7P55D-E LX motherboard, A Core i5 processor, and an Nvidia GTX460 graphics card. Anybody with similar experiences and perhaps a tip, please let me hear from you. Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. [Bug 720401] [NEW] LDAP session created with no password required
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** You have been subscribed to a public security bug by Marc Deslauriers (mdeslaur): I've been working on getting a small lab up and running on Ubuntu 10.10 using LDAP authentication. I'm using the stock versions found in the repos (e.g. nslcd v.0.7.6) an I've run in to an interesting problem: ldap users can get a session on the machine without a password. That is, if a user exists in LDAP they can log in to the machine by hitting the return key when asked for a password; this does not work for local users, nor can you make up an ID and expect it to work. BTW, if you give it a wrong password, you can't get a session (as in you get an "LDAP authentication failed" message). What I expected to happen: try to log in to a machine using LDAP authentication and get stopped when I provide bad credentials (e.g. good username, bad - or no - password). What happened: on a lightly configured machine I can log in using a good username from LDAP and *no* password. Security implications: if "user A" tries to log in with LDAP id "user B", "user A" can access all of the data stored on the local machine by "user B" - and they don't need a password to do it. I can reliably replicate this problem (and have done at least 10 times in a VM): 1) apt-get install nslcd (libpam-ldapd, libnss-ldapd and nscd are dependencies, so they get installed as well) 2) during configuration, provide debconf with basic info about our LDAP setup (in my case connect to a SunLDAP server). 3) add config info to nslcd.conf to allow connections (in my case it needs a specific certificate, so I add tls_cacertfile /path/to/dot-pem-file) The nsswitch.conf and nscd.conf files don't need to be edited at all, and the debconf configuration done by Ubuntu seems to be good enough to allow connections. At this point I restart the machine and try to log in as an LDAP user. When asked for a password I hit [enter] and I get a session. This user has never used the machine before and is not a duplicate of a local username. The uid of the LDAP user is correct (that is, the uid is passed to the local machine by the LDAP server and is not locally assigned.) As the LDAP user, I can su to any other LDAP ID without a password (just hit [enter] when asked for a password). I *cannot* su to a local user. I've been in touch with the nslcd developer via the nss-pam-ldapd-users list (thread here: http://lists.arthurdejong.org/nss-pam-ldapd- users/2011/msg00026.html - includes debug info). His response suggests that newer versions of nslcd address this kind of problem directly (see thread), so I tried installing the 11.04 packages (v0.7.13) in my 10.10 test box, and I no longer have the problem. It *appears* that newer releases (likely 0.7.7+) fix my problem. Is there any way to address this problem in Maverick? ** Affects: nss-pam-ldapd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- LDAP session created with no password required https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/720401 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
