[Bug 665218] Re: Software-center reports a progamming error in aptdaemon but without any details

2011-04-19 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
Could you please explain in more details, midday? What should I do to
reproduce the bug?

** Description changed:

- An unhandlable error occured
+ If software is installed using Ubuntu's Software Center an error dialog
+ occurs with the following wording:
+
+ "An unhandlable error occured

There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that
allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package
management related tasks. Please report this error at
- http://launchpad.net/aptdaemon/+filebug and retry.
+ http://launchpad.net/aptdaemon/+filebug and retry."

- I have installed this package on other Ubuntu 10.04 machine and it works
- fine, just not in 10.10.
+ Normally there is a "Details" expander in the dialog, but this isn't the
+ case here. It is missing.
+
+ Please don't comment on this bug if you see details in the error dialog.

[Bug 762035] Re: package linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic 2.6.38-8.42 failed to install/upgrade: corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archive

2011-04-19 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure can be caused by filesystem or memory corruption.
So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a memory test. If
this does resolve your bug please set its status to Invalid. Thanks in
advance!

[Bug 766827] [NEW] motd not updating

2011-04-19 Thread Graham Crumb
Public bug reported:

Following recent updates, the /var/run/motd file is being updated
properly, but the data contained within is not. This refers
specifically to the data udpated by the following scripts:

/usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-cpu-checker
/usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-reboot-required
/usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-updates-available

I have verified this behaviour on several of our machines, all of which
are running Ubuntu Server 10.04.

I've manually run /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check --human-readable
(called from /usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-updates-available)
and it outputs accurate data:

it@milpat:~$ /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check --human-readable
0 packages can be updated.
0 updates are security updates.

Running the /usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-updates-available
script itself returns the appropriate data:

it@milpat:~$ sudo /usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-updates-available
0 packages can be updated.
0 updates are security updates.
it@milpat:~$

But even after running the script manually, the motd file does not
contain the new data:

dmcgarry@emigre:~/devel/goofalicious/src/Goofalicious$ ssh milpat
Linux milpat 2.6.32-4-pve #1 SMP Thu Oct 21 09:35:29 CEST 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

[Bug 742862] Re: Bootl fails from USB stick

2011-04-19 Thread Joe Areeda
I broke down and put a DVD drive into that system and it worked.

I am still convinced the bootloader that is written to the USB is
incompatible with our motherboards.

Like I said in the original post the forum thread covers all the things
I've tried (thanks to OldFred for many of the ideas). The USB works
fine once ubuntu boots in both Natty and Maverick.

[Bug 763925] Re: package nvidia-current 270.30-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile returned error exit status 2

Thanks in
advance!

[Bug 765545] Re: nfs mounts in fstab block boot at "S or M" prompt

2011-04-19 Thread bwalex
Actually, turns out that I still have the same problem using IPs instead of
hostnames. I'm using these entries now:
192.168.0.70:/secure/alex /home/alex/secure nfs
defaults,rw,exec,user,nobootwait0 0
192.168.0.70:/data /home/alex/data nfs
defaults,rw,exec,user,nobootwait0 0

and the boot just prompted me again for the usual "S or M" input. Just for
reference:
% nslookup nasi.local
Server: 192.168.0.1
Address:192.168.0.1#53

Name: nasi.local
Address: 192.168.0.70

[Bug 766816] [NEW] unity in expo/spread mode panel icon menus are not accessible

2011-04-19 Thread Daniel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When using expo/spread mode (Super-W, Super-S), icons on the panel (calendar,
etc) can be clicked but their menus aren't actually made accessible/visible.
When returning from expo/spread mode, the panel icon looks as if it has been
clicked, but the menu is still not visible.
You need to click on a panel icon again to get things back to normal.
This is pretty much a minor cosmetic issue.
I think the panel icons should either be completely inaccessible or fully
accessible in expo/spread mode, not somewhere in between.
I don't know if this is a unity bug or a gnome-panel bug or what.

[Bug 707032] Re: Add helpful documentation for -nolisten tcp

2011-04-19 Thread Jeff Carr
Your last post was confusing. Are you totally sure that creating the
file with the contents I originally posted does not work? The file
being:

/etc/gdm/custom.conf

It is absolutely not acceptable to require changes to anything in /usr/
so there must be some way to modify something in /etc/

2011-04-19 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure can be caused by filesystem or memory corruption.
So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a memory test. If
this does resolve your bug please set its status to Invalid. Thanks in
advance!

[Bug 732149] Re: [natty] btrfs "grub-probe: error: unknown filesystem"

2011-04-19 Thread arand
If you are unable to boot as a result of similar symptoms as was seen in
this bug (which should be fixed by now, presumably, comment/report new
if not) there is a possible workaround to enable booting after the grub
config file has been written whilst grub-probe is unable to detect the
btrfs:

1. At the boot menu [e]dit the entry and look at the kernel line:
linux /vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=/dev/mapper/mellu-uburooot ro
rootflags=subvol=@ quiet splash vt.handoff=7

3. IF the "rootflags=subvol=@" boot option is missing add it, and then
boot the command list using ctrl+x

4. Once booted make sure that grub-probe detects the btrfs OK and then
run update-grub.

[Bug 766809] [NEW] Running programs marked on the wrong launcher icon

2011-04-19 Thread Jeroen T. Vermeulen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

On my pre-natty desktop I had set up an icon that launches a Gnome
terminal with psql in it. (It launches gnome-terminal explicitly, not
implicitly by running psql with the "in a terminal" option, so that I
can set a meaningful title). I then upgraded to the natty beta as per
Canonical policy.

Now, for many of the terminal windows I open, Unity incorrectly places
"open window" markers at my custom psql icon instead of at the Terminal
icon.

[Bug 667269] Re: winbind crashes

2011-04-19 Thread gmoore777
Instead of downloading the .deb files, i did the more appropriate,
SynapticPackageManager --> repositories --> Updates and
Click "Pre-released updated (lucid-proposed)" check box
which when installing winbind, it pulled in the proposed
versions of libwbclient0, samba, samba-common, and smbclient.
I did this on 2 machines (bee02 and bee75).
Will wait for winbind to crash.

[Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)

2011-04-19 Thread Roland Dreier
I just noticed something while looking at my Xorg.0.log after a couple
of dock/undock cycles leading to the black screen. I'm attaching the
full log, but what I noticed was:

boot up undocked:
[ 5.897] (II) intel(0): Allocated new frame buffer 1472x900 stride 6144,
tiled
matches a 1440x900 panel

dock:
[ 370.652] (II) intel(0): Allocated new frame buffer 3840x1200 stride 15360,
tiled
makes sense, I now have 2x1920x1200 monitors

undock:
[ 414.405] (II) intel(0): Allocated new frame buffer 1472x900 stride 6144,
tiled
back to the 1440x900 panel

dock again:
[ 434.873] (II) intel(0): Allocated new frame buffer 1920x1200 stride 7680,
tiled
now it only allocates a buffer for one monitor -- which probably explains why
the second monitor never lights up

I'm not sure what layer of the stack is responsible for figuring out
what buffer to allocate etc but this does seem like the first real clue
I've seen to where the problem lies.

[Bug 766805] [NEW] update-manager doesn't retrieve 13MB of cache - only 2K

2011-04-19 Thread itismike
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

This may be related to bug #697095, which automatically opened when I rebooted.
But it also may be completely different.
Basically, it seems like update-manager isn't really working anymore. I'll
report back in a couple days, but here's the info from the other bug:

"Natty Narwhal beta testing. Ran update manager and rebooted, logged in and
noticed my theme was broken. Checked updates (which was too quick,) and
rebooted again. Got this error upon running update manager.
Regarding the quickness: Update-manager used to download 13MB of update cache,
and now it only downloads 2KB before stating there are no updates available.
Either the update system has been redesigned to need less data to update the
cache (if so, nice job!) or something is very wrong with it."

Sure you can. Open the menu, and move your mouse over one of the menu items, and
press a key combination.

[Bug 765601] Re: New feature for Run with Arguments combobox (Debian Lenny SPE 0.8.4.h)

2011-04-19 Thread David Nicolson
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: spe

- I added argument recall to the Run.../stop dialog.
+ I added argument recall to the Run.../stop dialog.
I did this by changing dialog/runDialog.py
  From:
- self.arguments = wx.ComboBox(self, -1, choices = [],
style=wx.CB_DROPDOWN)
+ self.arguments = wx.ComboBox(self, -1, choices = [],
style=wx.CB_DROPDOWN)
  To:
- self.arguments = wx.ComboBox(self, -1, choices =
runPreviousArguments, style=wx.CB_DROPDOWN)
+ self.arguments = wx.ComboBox(self, -1, choices =
runPreviousArguments, style=wx.CB_DROPDOWN)

- And also changed Parent.py by adding a line of code thus:
-
- From:
-arguments   = runDialog.arguments.GetValue()
-beep= runDialog.beep.GetValue()
-
- To:
-arguments   = runDialog.arguments.GetValue()
-self.argumentsPrevious.append(arguments)
-beep= runDialog.beep.GetValue()
+   beep= runDialog.beep.GetValue()

[Bug 595448] Re: Slow boot caused by SATA controller reset

I confirm this bug is happening on Maverick (2.6.35-28-generic), exactly
as described: a 10 sec. wait on boot time because ata1 (intel 310 ssd)
does not respond. After 10 seconds boot resumes.

I would like to try rebuilding the kernel, but i'm kind of a newbie and
am not sure how to do that. Can anyone confirm there will be a fix for
this on 11.04?

What do you mean by "banner"?

>Pictures of D7000 nikon loaded but not stored

When the photos from your camera are displayed in Shotwell, you can
click 'Import Selected' or 'Import All' on the lower right-hand corner
to import your photos into Shotwell.

[Bug 270997] Re: intrepid regression: rdesktop overrides window manger key binding even when -K is used

2011-04-19 Thread Brian May
Not happy after reading #41, I thought it was fixed for good in #38.

Dawning,

(a) for the record, can you please state what version of rdesktop you
have that is broken?

(b) worth manually installing the version from 10.10 - rdesktop
1.6.0-3ubuntu2 - and see if this helps.

Thanks

Brian May

[Bug 732677] Re: bcmwl 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu2 not work on BCM4311

2011-04-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If you read the previous comments carefully you will find this potential
workaround. I can't confirm it works but Broadcom reckon it's a common
issue:

[from http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt]
* If the wl driver loads but doesn't seem to do anything:
the ssb module may be the cause. Sometimes blacklisting ssb may not
be enough to prevent it from loading and it loads anyway. (This is mostly
  seen on Ubuntu/Debian systems).

Check to see if ssb, wl or b43 is loaded:
  # lsmod | grep "b43\|ssb\|wl"

If any of these are installed, remove them:
  # rmmod b43
  # rmmod ssb
  # rmmod wl

Back up the current boot ramfs and generate a new one.
  # cp /boot/initrd.img-`uname -r` somewheresafe
  # update-initramfs -u
  # reboot

[Bug 742862] Re: Bootl fails from USB stick

2011-04-19 Thread Jim Patterson
I'm seeing the same issue. I have a Gigabyte MB as well, a Gigabyte
880GMA-USB3.

I set up a USB to boot from using Startup Disk Creator from Ubuntu 10.10
and a Natty Narwhal Beta2 Desktop ISO (64-bit). When I try and boot, I
get the "Loading operating system" line (seems to be standard with the
Gigabyte BIOS), then "Boot error".

I tested the USB on a different system with an Asus motherboard (also an
AMD 64 system), and it worked fine.
