[Bug 774293] Re: Unity fails to start after logging in
Thanks Bass_DR! I also had toyed with the menu editor, and now was faced with the same problem. Going in ~/.local/share/applications and deleting compiz.desktop, gnome-wm.desktop and mutter.desktop (anything related to window management) did the trick! [Bug 651904] Re: wrong colors: some text is non-readable
Hi! The short answer is, 'darklooks' theme from 'gnome-themes-extras' package. Optionally, please read more: Unfortunately, the only useable official dark theme, 'darkroom' theme, was kicked from mainstream (at least 2 years ago) and then totally deleted. So i emulate it by simple customizing colors of exists themes (so my screenshots are not directly reproduceable), but i always setup correct colors for dark theme (all dark backgrounds and all bright text) and it's easy to reproduce without additional steps. One remaining dark theme is 'darklooks', but it's unfortunately not really useable, it can be used mainly for test. The steps to uniformly reproduce are:- Run Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD (runs well in Virtualbox also) to ensure no user or other settings will affect results. Selest 'Try Ubuntu' without installing. Enable 'Universe' sources in software-center Install in synaptic 'gnome-themes-extras' stuff in Preferences-Appearance select 'darklooks' theme. Start software-center again and see it is version 3.0.8 (in 'about') and ensure no apt-get upgrade needed. Point in software-center to anything already installed, and see word 'installed' in almost unreadable colour (at least it is black, while in dark theme all text must be white). At least 99% of dark themes bugs can be, as first aid, solved by *remove* additional colouring of items and let it be system-coloured. The worst case is colouring by constant color independent of theme. The best case is all additional (not theme-defined) colors, if we really need it, must be calculated from theme-defined. Sorry if it's an offtopic. [Bug 651586] Re: Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox spellcheck has too many languages
As regards language-selector, its behavior is documented in Natty. You can reach the help document, which e.g. explains the meaning of the greyed menu items in the combobox on the Language tab, by clicking the Help button when in Language Support. Furthermore, this is reasonably not a language-selector bug, at least not in Natty, where the list of display languages consists of available translations. I invalidated the language-selector bug. The use of the word dictionary confuses me. The long lists seem to consist of locales, not dictionaries. Maybe there is just one dictionary for Spanish spell checking, for instance. Thunderbird and gedit still show all available locales that relate to the installed languages, which does not make sense IMO. ** Changed in: language-selector (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/651586 Title: Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox spellcheck has too many languages -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 670790] Re: Xv / XVideo accelerated video width is limited by / depending on the screen resolution on S3 Savage, but only if the laptop LCD is the primary screen
Hello Tormod, thanks for your comments and tests! Are you more deeply involved into the calculation methods for these savage drivers? In fact, on my system I had to remove the 7-pixel offset to get the screen full in width. I'm sorry, at the moment I don't have a lot of time for doing an official commit - but if it may take some time, I can keep an eye on it. I'd like to improve the driver further, there are several open issues: - when switching to TV output, similar clipping as I had experienced (and resolved) it on the LCD occurs again, depending on the video source resolution -- maybe an intermediate calculation similar to the expansion code should be applied? Additionally, there is NO resolution that fits TV out perfectly. 800x600 is closest, but the right and bottom ends are not displayed. This looks like even the basic image buffer might need scaling. - the driver (or the HW) is not able to scale a video DOWN. If there is a display window smaller than the source resolution, it is clipped. Maybe an integer/float issue? - when using the s3switch tool to use TV mode, this setting is not stored correctly / permanently in any way. Power management interventions or even players like VLC (which I need due to performance issues) disable the TV out and put garbage on the LCD. I have to enter s3switch lcd blindly to regain anything visual from the system. The current workaround with VLC is to start and pause a video while still using LCD or CRT, then switch to TV. The simple play command from stop state in VLC results in the garbage mentioned... - I have a little bit of hope to be able to boost the XVideo source window limit from 1024x1024 up to something larger, at least 1280x1280 to allow larger images (which are only data bloat and often the added resolution is decreased by compression artifacts, but can sometimes be found) to be displayed. It would be great if we could improve this driver. The machines using the hardware are great tools, very power-saving and quiet, and the basic acceleration of the savage as well as the TV out rendering are quite nice. Do you have access to any specs of the S3 chips? And/or can you explain the data formats to me, especially this integer/float issue and artificial floats created by dividing an integer data type to a fraction? I searched the internet a lot, but could not find a definite clue. Often such formats are no standards but simply a way to resolve a problem - I work a lot with controllers which are only able to use integers, often enough only 16 bit embedded systems... but in these application I can look at the code and see how the numbers are used. X11 is also open source, but a big bunch... so it would be great if you could help me here. [Bug 666833] Re: gnome-terminal background gets transparent when switching to profile w/o transparency
The following isn't meant as a personal attack. No: I won't test Natty. I've not chosen the latest LTS release on pure coincidence. I don't won't to bother every six months with the hippest crap or time wasting toy of the Mac-adoring fan boy generation. I don't won't to organize my life around a stream of constant noise (twitter, facebook, etc.), half-yearly releases, or a rolling release, where everyday is maintenance day! As a LTS user, I decided not to invest time in cutting edge releases, I decided to help stabilize the current LTS release till the dust settles on it, it starts to get a patina and I won't use two releases in parallel as long as there isn't another LTS release ripe for testing. Thanks for your help, but I already decided to return to Debian because it fits my needs and maybe I misunderstood the idea behind Ubuntu LTS releases. [Bug 789687] [NEW] Save As within Firefox works intermittently
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox 1. Ubuntu 11.04 2. Firefox 4.0.1+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.11.04.3 3. I had used Firefox to get some information from the internet. I clicked on save as, expecting it to proceed from there. 4. The save as window opened, but it was blank white. It had worked on one occasion a few minutes earlier today. This document was mostly text with some formatting (a motherboard specification from ASUS). The next window I selected was a photo of the motherboard. This is the one that failed to save. As this had also happened yesterday, I decided to report the problem. After triggering Apport sending that information, the Launchpad login screen came up (as expected). At this time, the Save As screen changed from blank to showing the previous folder to which I had saved, plus the folder contents (normal). However, when I tried to change the file name, from the website's name to a more meaningful one, I couldn't delete or enter into that field. I then clicked on the save button (to allow it to save to the folder file name shown), but that had no effect. The small window that gives details of a download then appeared, but it was white empty. I was able to close the download window the Save As window. Yesterday, I worked around the problem by copying the image from Firefox to LibreOffice Writer, saving that file; this worked OK, but I would prefer to use the Save As function in Firefox. [Bug 738982] Re: Calendar alarm notifier would not notify any events
2 weeks ago, I upgraded to 11.04. Again Calendar alarms would not work. I checked file /usr/lib/evolution/X.XX/evolution. It had 2.32, but the Evolution Alarm notifier in Start-up Applications was requesting to run file /usr/lib/evolution/2.30/evolution, which was the value used in 10.10, i.e. prior to the upgrade. If I have the only installation that has this problem (presumably that is why this bug expired), what could there be about my installation that does not allow these 2 elements to be co-ordinated? [Bug 776904] Re: Application windows not redrawn, appears unresponsive
I'm pretty sure this is a FGLRX related issue because I only started having this issue after installing a Radeon 6870, and therefore switching to the FGLRX driver. I previously used Natty with an NVidia 9600 GT and the Nvidia binary from the website with mipmapping enabled, with no problems. However, I would like to confirm the same issues have been happening to me when using any plugin with mipmapping enabled. This means both application switchers, as well as the Expo plugin. I don't think this is a terribly important bug because none of the plugins have mipmapping enabled by default (right? I dunno actually...) but having mipmapping disabled has a huge impact on compiz's visual quailty, so it is definitely important that this gets fixed. driver info: $ fglrxinfo display: :0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. Renovado placer al recibir éste mail tan considerado de tu parte. [Bug 789701] [NEW] Resume from hibernate does not work
Public bug reported: This is a new bug filed after commenting on bug #708286. My comments there were: After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 this morning, I have the same problem on a desktop system with an Intel Core-i7 920. Suspending to disk works fine, but resuming hangs with a blank blue screen. The hard- drive light is steady for a while as it presumably loads the hibernate image, but then goes off and nothing happens. I have to hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to reset the system, at which point it does a fresh boot and comes up normally. Suspend to RAM works just fine. Suspend to disk used to work fine with the grub command-line option of acpi_mode=nonvs. However, that doesn't seem to work with Natty. Adding nomodeset doesn't help either. It seems that everytime I do a distro upgrade either Resume from Sleep or Resume from hibernate does not work. It's either one or the other, so it's not the hardware because at various points, both have worked, just not simultaneously. [Bug 789705] [NEW] package boinc-client 6.10.59 dfsg-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 1
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: boinc I did do one strange thing. I re-installed Natty several hours ago and before removing my previous installing I had backed up /usr/shar/boinc- client (whatever folder has the usage data in it) and after re- installing I attempted replace that folder so that I wouldn't lose any of the work units. The efforts seemed to have failed and I apt-get purge boinc* ... then I once again installed boinc... it had been running for a few hours. At the time of the crash I was streaming a video over samba, had boinc running, chromium and pidgin... I think that was all... using vlc for the video. I'm not an expert but I hope that helps!
