[Bug 793235] [NEW] gateway nv51b05u with no sound on headset

2011-06-05 Thread bingo1912
Public bug reported:

I have a gateway nv51b05u with no sound on headset when plugged in and
this does not mute the speakers.

below is the output of

if i was a new user to linux i would be lost and return to microshaft

I will update with the results of the

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

however this would better serve the customer if a new install put an
icon on the desktop for test the computer, then built in it could go
through these

No end user should ever HAVE to open terminal, though they should have
the option

my 80 year old neighbour is using ubuntu and has never opened terminal
because i fixed all this stuff on her computer before i gave it to her

the sound does not output over hdmi as well

[Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-06-05 Thread Stefan Zeyen
I' ve got a little time today so I tested some things

I am using Ubuntu Natty with Unity Dekstop.

- When i deactivate the Stylus as extended Device in Gimp, Gimp works
properly.

- When i start my system as Ubuntu classic without effects, i can configure the
Stylus to screen (Extended Device in Gimp)
Gimp works Properly.

- Starting my System Ubuntu Classic (with Desktop effects) it is the
same like using unity. The only difference is Gimp does not crash. I can
change the tools and thee bruhes after clicking in the Panel.

I have set paramater NETDOWN to no in /etc/init.d/halt in both live sessions

Re: [Bug 762987] Re: RT2870 WLAN Stick (D-Link DWA 140) not working. firmware does not support detected chipset

2011-06-05 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Agreed.

Btw, I have found some output from such a DWA-140 with compat-wireless
with debugging enabled. This prints a much better chip info:

http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=5t=6061
 Bus 003 Device 007: ID 07d1:3c0a D-Link System DWA-140 RangeBooster N USB
 Adapter(rev.B2)
..
 phy1 - rt2x00_set_chip: Info - Chipset detected - rt: 3071, rf: 0008, rev:
 0213.

So it looks like it is a 3071 chipset. And from the code snippet below
it can be seen that for that chipset the rt2800usb wants to load the
second image in a firmware of size 8KiB.

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.38.y.git;a=blob;f=drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2800usb.c;h=197a36c05fdaf18a294000b9eae8b5dad2073eea;hb=HEAD
116 /*
117 * Check which section of the firmware we need.
118 */
119 if (rt2x00_rt(rt2x00dev, RT2860) ||
120 rt2x00_rt(rt2x00dev, RT2872) ||
121 rt2x00_rt(rt2x00dev, RT3070)) {
122 offset = 0;
123 length = 4096;
124 } else {
125 offset = 4096;
126 length = 4096;
127 }

For these chips the rt2800usb needs to load the concatenated second
firmware image from an 8KiB firmware, but natty still comes with the
4KiB rt2870.bin. In 1.53 2870.bin doubles in size to exactly 8KiB. Two
4KiB drivers are concatenated.

In preparation for a SRU we should look if anything formerly working
potentially breaks with the new firmware. Ralink says it is backward
compatible, so older drivers that load the new firmware should be
fine:

http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/pipermail/users_rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/2011-March/003380.html
Ralink's Shiang Tu says:
We always suggest to use latest firmware, because it's backward
compatible and also has some enhancement, bug fix, or support of new
chip
For rt5390 or newer chips, it shall upgrade the firmware to this
version, or it may malfunction.

The USB drivers in staging have been modified (vs. the drivers from
the Ralink website) to load 4KiB firmware. From looking at the code
they should just take the first half of an 8KiB firmware and ignore
the rest. Nevertheless I would prefer to have a regression test with
RT2860, RT2872 or RT3070 based hardware with a USB driver from staging
and the oneiric 8KiB rt2870.bin. Maybe we can find someone who can do
this. If testing that it might be good to move the other Ralink

[Bug 604658] Re: lernid should give some indication that it's connected

2011-06-05 Thread John S. Gruber
A message is produced, and the number of users in the chatroom is
displayed.

I view this hand in hand with LP: #604773, however. I run Lernid with an
increased size so I can more easily view both the session tab and a fair
number of classroom messages. Those two events above are small and
aren't very apparent if you aren't paying attention, and after 25
seconds waiting for the irc connection process to finish it's easy not
to be paying attention.

[Bug 792850] Re: Lubuntu Oneiric live desktop lacks restart and shutdown buttons

2011-06-05 Thread Jonathan Marsden
The screenshot supplied demonstrating the reported issue does not show
the default Lubuntu theme, it seems to show an LXDE theme instead.

Here, a virtualbox 4.0.8 VM running Lubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Alpha 1 shows
the expected Lubuntu theming and the shutdown menu has all the expected
buttons.

Did you perhaps change themes, and fail to note this in your bug report?
That could well be significant in reproducing an issue of this kind.

See lubuntu-oneiric-alpha1-shutdown-jmarsden.png attached -- works for
me :)

Please sync autodocktools 1.5.4.cvs.20100912-3.1 (multiverse) from
Debian unstable (non-free)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
the adt changes has been applied in Debian and idle-python2.7 is installed by
the package that requires it (mgltools-pmv), so it's not required anymore in
autodocktools

[Bug 792769] Re: Audacity cannot play OGG files in the right way

2011-06-05 Thread psl
I did more tests:
1) When my PC is idle, I don't see problem, Audacity plays OGG files OK.
2) When my PC is not idle (I run BOINC cloinet, so my PC is never idle but has
always load with low priority), I see problem with Audacity and OGG files under
this condition.
3) When I load file in safe mode (copy), OGG is played without issue (I cannot
replicate the issue)

I noticed today once, that only one of OGG channels was shifted in time. One
channel (left?) finished in time but right channel was played when waveform
displayed silence.
I noticed today that channels were not synchronized (like right channel was
delayed after left channel, it sounds like an echo.)

To replicate the issue:
1) run PC with some load, it can be BOINC client or some benchmark, or
something else.
2) open OGG file in Audacity in fast mode (direct play from file)
3) play the file and hear the music, watch volume level indicator. Music sample
should have at last 2 minutes. Longer sample has higer chance to trigger the
issue.

[Bug 762964] Re: Bluetooth doesn't work in Ubuntu 11.04

2011-06-05 Thread tkoun
hello,

here is my workaround that consistently works not only at boot or reboot
but also after suspend/hibernate...

-- just install using synaptic the bluez package from blueman ppa
(ppa:blueman/ppa); it only exists for maverick but it installs ok in
natty.

before I tried
1) kernel upgrade from natty proposed
2) /etc/init.d/ bluetooth restart in /etc/rc.local

1) did not work and 2) does not work after suspend/resume

hope this will help someone trapped in natty and lazy as myself to
downgrade to the good old maverick...

PS: after having to deal with this and the infamous 1-pixel tray icons
bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/+source/unity/+bug/767095)
I wonder how it is possible that natty ever came out of the beta (not to
say alpha) status

[Bug 793249] [NEW] QString doesn't provide QString::QString(std::string)

Public bug reported:

Although my program doesn't have the QT_NO_STL macro defined, when I try

silently, either through QString::FromStdString() and

[Bug 793248] [NEW] [natty] kde_components/PartitionModel.py crashes if installer run in plasma netbook workspace

2011-06-05 Thread Zorael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Trying to install Kubuntu 11.04 on an MSI Wind U100 rebrand netbook.

After booting the live media I was automatically presented with the
netbook workspace formfactor, but instead of changing it to the normal
desktop workspace I thought I'd give it a try.

The installer crashed after I finished manually partitioning with the
attached python backtraces. I retried it twice and it was quite
reproducible. After switching to the desktop workspace (and running
ubiquity from a terminal with debugging enabled), I got past that step
and the installation finished successfully.

[Bug 250723] Re: USB devices does not perceive it.

2011-06-05 Thread Jonathan Marsden
I think it is relatively unlikely that Ubuntu packagers and developers
will add this new feature to hardinfo -- enhancement requests to
application software are usually something to ask the upstream
software developers about, instead.

@André Savik : If you would like to provide the trivial patch to
hardinfo to do this, that would probably be more productive that asking
What gives? Any news? -- write that patch, and it will *be* the news
:) Based on personal experience, hardinfo developers do welcome user-
contributed patches.

You could also generate an enhancement request on the bugtracker of the
hardinfo application itself, if a similar request does not already exist
there, since this request does not seem to be Ubuntu-specific. That
bugtracker is at http://bugs.hardinfo.org/

Hi! First of all, when my computer boot, there were just random noises
coming out from my speakers. When I tried to play back some music, no
music was heard. However, when I disconnected the speakers from my

sound card, the strange random noises disappeared after a high pitch.
After the reconnection, the music were coming from my speaker.
However, when I restarted the computer again, I had to un-plug and re-
connect the speaker again in order to stop that wierd noise.

[Bug 734563] Re: [gnome3] Upgrading to Gnome3 PPA breaks Ubuntu theme defaults

2011-06-05 Thread Linuxexperte
I also want to put your attention to broken dependencies in the gnome-
games-package. Everytime, I want to do the upgrade after having
installed this ppa-repository, I get this in synaptic, Mint-Update and
Terminal as well:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-games-common_1%
3a3.0.2-0ubuntu1~natty2_amd64.deb: Versuch,
/usr/share/gnome-games-common/cards/bonded.svg
zu überschreiben, welches auch in Paket gnome-games-extra-data 2.30.0-1ubuntu1
ist.

In english this means:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-games-common_1%
3a3.0.2-0ubuntu1~natty2_amd64den: Try to overwrite
/usr/share/gnome-games-common/cards/bonded.svg
which is also in package gnome-games-extra-data2.30.0-1ubuntu1.

So in one of these packages, this file claimed for has to go, so that it
gets installable.

And to solve the issue for not being able to log in after having
installed this ppa-repository, you not only need to edit the line
mentioned above. The very last line in this file shows a wrong Gnome-
Version with 2.0. this has to be changed to 3.0. Then the login works
again. For me it did.

[Bug 284821] Re: Ubuntu can't handle mmsh: streams.

2011-06-05 Thread LukasThyWalls
I have this problem in Kubuntu 11.04 in Natty. I test the browsers
Firefos and Chromium with identic results. With Totem or MPlayer plugins
for browsers have the same problem. And i have all the packages you
said.

But i test with this page
http://www.marca.com/multimedia/directo/marcatv.html and i see
something. The URL for the stream object is
http://reflector.marca.com:9002 but if i change this for
mms://reflector.marca.com:9002 (I download the page and change the html
code) it works without any problem. With Totem plugin or MPlayer plugin.

if the problem is how it handle or detect http to mms content, do a
workaround or a patch it isn't too difficult.

[Bug 753174] Re: Wireless password repeatedly asked for

2011-06-05 Thread eltro5000
Same issue here.
I am using following wlan pcmcia adapter:

02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intersil Corporation ISL3890 [Prism
GT/Prism Duette]/ISL3886 [Prism Javelin/Prism Xbow] [1260:3890] (rev 01)

linux-wlan-ng and linux-firmware-nonfree installed.

When trying to connect to a network, I get the same error:

[ 153.794015] wlan0: direct probe to (routers mac address) (try 1/3)
[ 153.991634] wlan0: direct probe to (routers mac address) (try 2/3)
[ 154.191641] wlan0: direct probe to (routers mac address) (try 3/3)
[ 154.391609] wlan0: direct probe to (routers mac address) timed out

Using the linux 2.6.39-1 mainline kernel fixed the problem, but I acctually
would like to use the ubuntu stock kernel.
Do you need any more information?

the desktop, and it happens that it works correctly. So there is problem
with the effects.

Do you have an idea of what I could do to trouble shoot this problem
more precisely?

May I update some parts of the intel drivers, xorg server...

Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards

I tested with Oneiric's kernel http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/linux-

be working ok in either internal, external, or mirrored mode. In side-

but I suspect that is actually a Unity bug separate from X. (Have not
tested in classic mode yet.)

Re: [Bug 622524] Re: See question; #122091; WNDA3100v2 still fails; ndiswrapper crashes system

2011-06-05 Thread cooper
Fabio,

No I am not but that is because I gave up on trying to resolve it a couple
of months back.

1 - I use version 11 Ubuntu at this time.
2 - my resolution to the issue at the time was to trash the Netgear wireless
card and replace it with a Linksys card. Someone in a forum commented that
that was a wimpy solution on my part. It might have been but then, the
Linksys card worked out of the box and without needing NDIS.

I never did figure out why ndis kept crashing things.

Hope that helps.

Best regards,
jwferk

Status in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-nettool

With reference to question 122091; first, I thank the responder for
the advice and effort to that question.

This is an effort to get a Netgear USB WNDAv2 wireless to work with
  Ubuntu 10.

1 - installed wine to extract the driver file from Netgear.
  2 - downloaded WNDA3100v2 Software versions 1.7, 1.6, 1.2, 1.1 and 1.0. I
did this because wine would not extract 1.1 through 1.7. I finally settled
on 1.0 which ran through the setup.exe routine in wine.
3 - copied the WinXP2000 file with the following files to /usr/local

   -rwxrwxr-x 1 ferk ferk 7427 2009-06-08 11:52 bcmh43xx64.cat
  -rwxrwxr-x 1 ferk ferk 7450 2009-06-08 11:52 bcmh43xx.cat
  -rwxrwxr-x 1 ferk ferk 747008 2009-05-05 12:00 bcmwlhigh564.sys
  -rwxrwxr-x 1 ferk ferk 167298 2009-05-15 11:58 bcmwlhigh5.inf
  -rwxrwxr-x 1 ferk ferk 632576 2009-05-05 12:00 bcmwlhigh5.sys

4 - installed the latest version of ndiswrapper from sourceforge.

  5 - ran ndiswrapper -i bcmwlhigh5.inf

6 - command ndiswrapper -l indicated both the device and the driver were
present
7 - loading the ndiswrapper did not solve the connection problem; the
wireless usb connection does not yet work. There is no output for wlan0 with
the iwconfig command. This shows no wireless device to be present.

8 - blacklisted the following in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf to
  avoid any driver conflicts:

  #conflict with ndsiwrapper
  #(see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper)
  blacklist bcm43xx
  blacklist b43
  blacklist b43legacy
  blacklist ssb

NOW, an additional problem has popped-up. - Not only does the WNDA3100
still not work but I need to blacklist ndiswrapper at startup. Reason
is that if the ndiswrapper module is loaded at boot, the main login
screen no longer opens and I cannot login to the system. I need to
boot into failsafe at the root level and blacklist ndiswrapper, then
  reboot the system.

If the ndiswrapper module is loaded at boot, I cannot even use the GUI
failsafe mode as no login screen appears.

I have reinstalled the OS three times today. I can confirm absolutely
that the system is completely current and that blacklisting
ndiswrapper prior to booting is the core of the problem. It does not
make any difference if I install ndiswrapper from Synaptic or from
  Sourceforge.

[Bug 792850] Re: Lubuntu Oneiric live desktop lacks restart and shutdown buttons

2011-06-05 Thread Erick Brunzell
The screenshot supplied demonstrating the reported issue does not show
the default Lubuntu theme, it seems to show an LXDE theme instead.

Correct, and it only happens on the live desktop, not after I've
installed. I began discussing this on the mailing list, to which I'd not
subscribed in time for Julien's release announcement, but there were
three issues regarding casper and/or ubiquity that I didn't experience
with Ubuntu:

1) The Lubuntu Alpha1 Live CD boots to a tty, so you have to type startx
to get the DE.

2) The default DE lacks restart or shutdown buttons.

3) Upon completing the installation I was asked whether to restart or
keep using the Live DE as usual. I chose to restart and the CD ejected
as expected but the screen was just blank. So I removed the CD, closed
the tray and hit enter, but nothing happened. I tried some common key
combos but finally had to use the reset button on my box to complete the
restart.

Per Julien's instructions on the mailing list I repeated this procedure,
and upon booting to a tty I tried waiting (I took a shower), and I tried
to restart lxdm via sudo service lxdm start, but I'm used to Gnome so
I could easily be doing something wrong.

Regardless I could only get X to start by typing startx in the tty.
Then I end up in what appears to be a pure LXDE.

Here, a virtualbox 4.0.8 VM running Lubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Alpha 1 shows
the expected Lubuntu theming and the shutdown menu has all the expected
buttons.

I'm running on actual hardware, not in a VM. The hardware involved is:

JetWay JATOM-GM1-230-LF Motherboard
Intel Atom 230 CPU @ 1.60GHz
System Memory 2GB DIMM
Intel 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics
Intel N10/ICH 7 Family High Def Audio Controller

Did you perhaps change themes, and fail to note this in your bug
report?

No. I installed nothing. Well, since Julien requested a screenshot I
installed the screenshot tool, but that's all.

Maybe starting from startx rather than starting from lxdm starts the
wrong session?

Given what Julien said in the release announcement I doubt this is worth
spending much time on.

2011-06-05 Thread Rik.v.a.
Still, this only happens in VLC. I've tried other players: xine and
smplayer don't freeze up.

It might be noteworthy to add that this freezing also happens on this
same machine when running Arch Linux (on another partition).

I did a full memtest so I don't think this is hardware related.

Re: [Bug 762987] Re: RT2870 WLAN Stick (D-Link DWA 140) not working. firmware does not support detected chipset

2011-06-05 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Actually, with linux-firmware 1.53 the rt3070.bin is now a symlink to
the 8KiB rt2870.bin (because of patch rt2870sta: Use latest firmware
for RT3070 and RT3071), so in oneiric currently a staging driver will
have to read the first part of an 8KiB firmware now.

[Bug 793261] [NEW] CP210x not support CP2104 device

2011-06-05 Thread Nuno Lambuca
Public bug reported:

I am trying to use CP2104 (Silicon Labs), which should be support by CP210X
driver and I am not able to get good baud rate or even to modify it. Bit time
40nS which means really high speed. Using Ubuntu kernel driver for it.
Is the kernel driver supposed to handle CP2104? May I have access to kernel
CP210x driver so that I would modify it to support CP2104?
What are the steps to reconfigure (re-compile) the driver?

Thanks

solving this completely, the package, I mentioned above has to be reput

[Bug 793266] [NEW] No accelerometer HDD protection on a Toshiba Satellite A665

2011-06-05 Thread LTSmash
Public bug reported:

I have this Toshiba Satellite A665, which comes with a 3D accelerometer.
The purpose of this accelerometers is to measure the relative magnitude
(and direction) of the acceleration of gravity. In the event the device
enter in a free fall, the magnitude of the acceleration changes and this
is used to park the HD heads and protect the integrity of the data. I
have support for HDD protection in Win7, but it's not included in
Ubuntu, and there seems to be not a single driver out there. HDAPS
doesn't support my PC, only Macbooks and IBM computers, and it's very
dangerous for me to use my system without protection, my HDD already
died once because of disabling HDD protection.

It would be great if we could have accelerometer support in Ubuntu.

Maybe it would be possible to reverse engineer the driver from Windows,
by decompiling it and porting the code to linux kernel? A framework for
all accelerometers would be great.

Thanks.

[Bug 793265] [NEW] If the service name too long, printer does not get advertized via DNS-SD

2011-06-05 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

I have several print queues on a print server and they have rather
verbose descriptions in their Description/Info fields. The patch to make
CUPS' DNS-SD broadcasting of print queues also working with Avahi
generates DNS-SD service names as CUPS description @ Server host
name. Avahi only allows strings with a maximum of 63 characters as
service names and the service names generated by the patch are often too
long. The printers with too long service names do not get DNS-SD-
advertized as Avahi does not accept them.

I have modified the Avahi patch so that in case of too long description
strings, they get cut to assure that the service name is never longer
than 63 characters.

The attached patch contains the changes and applies to the
scheduler/dirsvc.c file after applying the debian/patches/cups-
avahi.patch.

[Bug 793265] Re: If the service name too long, printer does not get advertized via DNS-SD

2011-06-05 Thread Till Kamppeter
The attached patch is an update of the patch to add Avahi support to
CUPS 1.4.x (file debian/patches/cups-avahi.dpatch in the Debian/Ubunmtu
package of CUPS). It fixes bug 792309, bug 711779, and this bug. With
this update sharing printers via DNS-SD (especially to Mac OS X and to
iPhone and iPad) should actually work.

[Bug 792841] Re: OpenOffice.org Contour Editor crashes login session

2011-06-05 Thread VanillaMozilla
Apparently it does not work with all image files. A file created and
cropped by SimpleScan seems to cause failure. File attached.

I'm a little reluctant run the commands to try it yet with LibreOffice. Does
the command
apt-get -y upgrade
also upgrade the OS to Natty? I'm not quite ready to try it on this computer,
and my other ones will not accept the upgrade easily. Besides, an OS upgrade
might destroy evidence.
