[Bug 960092] Re: Latest update renders system unbootable error: no such partition

2012-03-20 Thread Colin Watson
OK, so I'm afraid your GRUB installation was simply misconfigured. It
was set up to upgrade the boot loader on /dev/sda every time you
upgraded, but according to your comment on IRC you want it on /dev/sdb.
The effect of this was that you had an old partial copy of GRUB on
/dev/sdb, which eventually broke due to otherwise-innocuous changes (the
ABI between a GRUB core image and GRUB modules is not fixed).

You should run 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc' and make sure the disk
you want to boot from is selected; I would in general recommend
selecting all the non-removable disks in your system.

2012-03-20 Thread Christian Mariucci
Public bug reported:

freeze. And when I open the menu, to select between ubuntu and ubuntu-

[Bug 960263] [NEW] Licence issue

2012-03-20 Thread Ian Macintosh
Public bug reported:

From grub2 1.99 source in grub2-1.99/grub-core/kern/dl.c

/* Me, Vladimir Serbinenko, hereby I add this module check as per new
GNU module policy. Note that this license check is informative only.
Modules have to be licensed under GPLv3 or GPLv3+ (optionally
multi-licensed under other licences as well) independently of the
presence of this check and solely by linking (module loading in GRUB
constitutes linking) and GRUB core being licensed under GPLv3+.
Be sure to understand your license obligations.
*/

This indicates that *all* modules must be GPLv3 or GPLv3+

However, the code actually checks for GPLv3, GPLv3+ and GPLv2+ (this
might be a separate bug report? - getting the comment consistent with
the code for grub_dl_check_license)

Case in point: LVM uses GPLv2 (and LGPLv2.1 for libraries)
see:
http://sources.redhat.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/LVM2/COPYING?rev=1.1content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markupcvsroot=lvm2

Seems like the conclusion that 'module loading in GRUB constitutes
linking' is an issue, whether that conclusion will hold water or not is
another matter.

The only 'out' might be that if it is a GPL license, the clause 9
referring to any later version may apply.

Anyone got a definitive answer to clarify this?

[Bug 960262] [NEW] include an option to use aufs instead of overlayfs in lxc-start-ephemeral

2012-03-20 Thread Gary Poster
Public bug reported:

Because of the problems we've encountered with overlayfs over the past
couple of months, and because aufs did seem to be working earlier, I'd
like it if we could have an option to use aufs with lxc-start-ephemeral.

Because overlayfs is the well-advertised future and aufs is the
deprecated past, and because we currently have workarounds for the known
overlayfs issues, I'd like overayfs to continue to be the default.

If this doesn't make into Precise, it is not essential: we can always
make our own version of the script later if necessary. However, this
would be nice to have.

Thank you

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the

Unfortunately, no, I can't reproduce it, it was a single occurrence.
And yes, I'm inclined to think it's a window stack issue, there seems to
be, uh, a plethora of those under virtual box, nearly every display
quirk I've encountered doesn't show in a screenshot. If I can provoke
it again, I'll try to figure out the steps to reproduce.

[Bug 944353] Re: Wrong permissions on /dev/crystalhd

2012-03-20 Thread Thomas
I’ve written a very simple, basic patch using udev rules that changes the
device permissions to
“crw-rw-rw- root video”
It works for me on my WeTab with it’s builtin BCM70015 chip.
(I’m not sure if the attached file should be marked as a patch, but since it
solves the problem, I‘ll mark it as one)
There should definitely be a better patch than this udev rule

[Bug 958599] Re: FFe: rest of FreeIPA tech preview

2012-03-20 Thread Timo Aaltonen
** Description changed:

  https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/servercloud-p-freeipa-
  tech-preview

There are a couple of packages still needed for the blueprint

  * 389-ds-console (in NEW)
  * 389-console (in NEW)
+ * 389-ds (built by 389-ds-base)
  * libapache2-mod-rev
  * pki (Dogtag)
  * freeipa

Freeipa client was uploaded before FF, but got rejected due to being
unclean lintian-wise. That's now fixed, the client tested against Fedora
16 and it works. But the ultimate goal would be to get the server
working as well. PKI is now working, and the final step would be to
finish porting the FreeIPA server config bits for Debian/Ubuntu.

I'm filing this bug to track the progress of the remaining bits, and to
(hopefully) get an exception for the remaining functionality to be added
  to precise.

[Bug 925046] Re: gnome-control-center sound forgets chosen preferred input device

2012-03-20 Thread David Henningsson
Hi!

For remembering your USB soundcard (webcam) through unplugging and
plugging, that is probably not going to work for Ubuntu 12.04 - the
functionality is not there. If you like what ever you plug in to become
selected, you can try adding

load-module module-switch-on-connect

to /etc/pulse/default.pa

For rebooting, it should remember the last settings though.

[Bug 946796] Re: [HP Pavilion g4 Notebook PC, ATI R6xx HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all

2012-03-20 Thread David Henningsson
Hi,

You're reporting having problems with HDMI audio. Could you ensure two
things:

1) For ATI HDMI to work, the proprietary fglrx driver has to be
installed.

2) Make sure the HDMI port is selected in the sound settings.

Is this helping?

[Bug 960276] [NEW] a bad AMI can hang an entire compute node

2012-03-20 Thread Nick Moffitt
Public bug reported:

Using the attached image (and others) causes the entire compute node to
hang between the booting of the image and the configuration of
networking. The running image has a console ring buffer output file
(however problematic--often it looks like it never got a proper root
filesystem somehow--lots of NO PTY errors), but is unpingable.

The only way to terminate these instances is to restart nova-compute so
that it will collect amqp messages again, and then send the terminate
request. This seems suspiciously like the compute code is blocking in a
libvirt call of some sort.

The cluster used booted an older Oneiric image with no problems
whatsoever.

This effectively can DoS an entire openstack installation through
nothing more than running instances.

Attached is the amd64 image from http://cloud-
images.ubuntu.com/precise/20120319/ which exhibited this problem in our
rc1 cloud.

[Bug 952556] Re: [Precise] [Hardware-killer] HD restarts every few seconds

2012-03-20 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Hi Colin,

I'll perform the checks you suggest, however I doubt the issue is caused
by apps performing unwanted writes (I assume that the disk restarting
every minute be related to cron activity or so...) as I feel that the
issue is not with the disk restarting, but with the disk stopping much
too soon (I've actually heard it spin down only some seconds after
having been accessed, which is definitely unwanted).

I'll attach the resquest log soon.

[Bug 933433] Re: Kubuntu manual install crashed during bootloader configuration on an XFS partition

2012-03-20 Thread Barry Warsaw
I tried this with the precise-desktop ISO and the behavior is a bit
different. Here's what I did, please verify that it's a useful/accurate
reproduction of your issue.

When I got to the erase/something else screen, I chose the latter
(essentially, manual partitioning). I created a new partition table,
and then an 8GB root partition on /dev/vda1, which I made an XFS file
system. Then I put the remaining 500MB or so on /dev/vda2. I told the
partitioner to install the boot loader on /dev/vda1. At the end of the
installation, I got a popup window saying:

Executing 'grub-install /dev/vda1' failed.
This is a fatal error.

All you can do at this point is click OK. Note that /var/log/syslog has
the grub-installer warning mentioned in comment #6, but no Python
traceback.

I'm inclined to say that this specific bug is no longer valid, so I'm
going to close it. However, if you can still reproduce it with the
latest 12.04 live CD, please re-open this bug and provide addition
information (e.g. recipe for reproduction, log entries, etc.). The fact
that you are even given the opportunity to install grub on an
unsupported file system like XFS will be fixed as part of bug 959724.

Thanks Giuseppe. The debs I used are still sat on the server. Here are
the md5's. They appear to check out against the ones in your bug

crazy.

MD5(hylafax-client_6.0.5-5_i386.deb)= 6c03cb2126ef70ea5953f22f768fc39a

MD5(hylafax-server_6.0.5-5_i386.deb)= 972a5acc059441351f700a4377f36a8c

I have the rest of the week working at base, so I could reinstall them
and be able to catch any segfault without too much disruption. Should I
install the packages marked dbg instead?

[Bug 960084] Re: changing font size in gnome-terminal changes window dimensions.

2012-03-20 Thread RobinMHolt
If the window has the dimensions of 80 columns by 25 rows, I change the
font size down and up a couple steps ending back at the original size
and now my window has dimensions of 68x22, which component is likely to
be the source of the problem. I assumed window manager, but I do not
know how things are structured and where responsibility lies. If it
belongs to a different component, please reassign.

[Bug 949813] Re: nm-applet crashed with SIGSEGV in quark_strdup()

2012-03-20 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Unfortunately, the stack trace appears to be unusable. That said, we've
done some changes lately to NetworkManager and nm-applet and I think
they probably fix this crash. Can you make sure your system is fully up
to date and then test again to see if you can still reproduce this
issue?

[Bug 689733] Re: Application icons should only display windows from the current workspace in the window spread

2012-03-20 Thread Ego
I'm trying to understand other ways workspaces can be used

I don't, because i do understand what application spread should do in
multi workspace environment. It should show windows from all workspaces
not hide them.

if you expect to see all windows from all workspaces
why would you use more than one WS?
that makes no sense

Yes i think you don't understand not everybody wants to:

-Think where application windows are opened in multi workspace environment and
some still expect application spreed will tell them that and take them there.
-Use their PC for predefined number of task that basically never changes and
think about how exactly they will group their tasks to rememberer them. It's
like saying ti users how should they arrange their desktops and how you don't
understand they arrange it differently.

Or maybe:

my impression is that you don't have any use for the extra layer of
organization that having more than one workspace provides

It's like saying to the users how should they arrange their desktop

It's nothing to understand you see?

[Bug 952556] Re: [Precise] [Hardware-killer] HD restarts every few seconds

2012-03-20 Thread Colin King
@Swâmi,

I'm suspecting it may be that Precise is doing less disk activity now
that we've worked on fixing a bunch of applications + daemons that were
causing a load of (frequent) unnecessary writes. I wonder if the
hdparm setting in /lib/hdparm/hdparm-functions when running battery is
too aggressive. As an experiment, can you edit /etc/hdparm.conf and
after the line:

#apm = 255

add

apm_battery = 255

and see if this reduces the start/stops (it should do).

Dnia 2012-03-20, wto o godzinie 14:59 +, Clint Byrum pisze:
I think 500ms is *way* too low a threshold, and a different heuristic
needs to be used to determine whether or not a user wants the HUD. I
alt-tab constantly, rapidly, and the HUD comes up every time unless I
hold down alt-tab long enough to see the window switcher, which feels
like an eternity when it is enforced for every quick window
 switch. :-/

No no, it's not that we treat every alt press under 500ms as an alt tap.
We only treat it as one _if_ no other key was pressed (thus, any
shortcut shouldn't ever trigger the HUD). Worst thing is none of us can
reproduce your issues...

[Bug 954660]

2012-03-20 Thread Daniel-ffwll
I'm gonna lean out the window a bit here and declare this a hw issue
with the ram. If the issue pops up again with the more conservative
memory timings please reopen the bug so I know why I've had a head-on
encounter with a slab of concrete.
