[Bug 976383] [NEW] Periodic lockups or crashes
Public bug reported: I've been using 12.04 beta since beta 1 and this problem has existed. Essentially what happens is (normally) I'll be scrolling through a webpage and one of 3 things will happen. Either my current session exits, locks up entirely, or just locks up the UI allowing the mouse to still move. This happens on any desktop environment, whether it is Ubuntu 2D, Gnome classic, Gnome shell, Ubuntu unity, etc. It seems worse with gnome shell, where it almost always completely locks up. It seems most stable under gnome classic. Last time it locked up I sshed into the machine to see if I could figure out what happened. Xorg was at 100% CPU and not responding besides the mouse. Video playback froze, UI non responsive. This seems to be an architecture related problem and others seem to be having the same problem. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11783386 I've been checking dmesg and syslogs to see if I could figure out what might be causing the lockups/crashes. dmesg returned a few bits of information that may be helpful init: lightdm main process (1536) terminated with status 1 eclipse[4532]: segfault at 18 ip 7f558e70d30e sp 7fffd0fcb8f0 error in libgdk-x11-2.0.so..2400.10[7f558e69b000+ad000] init: failsafe-x main process (6661) terminated with status 1 I had killed the main xorg process, causing the last messaged in dmesg. Hopefully this will be helpful for someone. [Bug 659438] Updated
In Precise the issue doesn't appear since there is a race between the simulate() and the run() method which eats the exception. This race situation has been fixed in trunk recently that hasn't been uploaded yet. Furthermore aptdaemon trunk now catches the exception in the apt.cache.Cache.required_download call and lets the transaction fail with an ERROR_INCOMPLETE_INSTALL. So we won't get any bug reports of this anymore - although the issue isn't fixed on the lower level (debconf/apt). Unfortunately software-center doesn't handle the ERROR_INCOMPLETE_INSTALL correctly yet. It just displays the error message but doesn't offer to run the FixIncompleteInstall() method of aptdaemon which would basically run dpkg --configure -a and fix the system. Additionally the current error message doesn't contain any hind to run sudo dpkg --configure -a manually. But it seems to be a first step to resolve the issue. I will try to create a working patch for s-c in the next days. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/659438 Title: Installation/Removal fails because of package which could not be located (failure in apt.Cache.required_download) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/aptdaemon/+bug/659438/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

However, if USB keyboard and mouse are connected at boot time, the computer will freeze entering suspend. (Power LED will stay on and the computer freezes. Power LED will not blink as in ACPI S1 or S3 state.) Note that suspend I am talking about is also known as ACPI S3 state or Suspend to RAM (STR). Procedure: 1) Attach USB keyboard and mouse 2) Install Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS 32-bit 3) Install NVIDIA binary display device driver 4) Reboot the computer to load NVIDIA binary display device driver 5) Enter Suspend 6) The computer will freeze and it will not enter ACPI S3 state because power LED will not blink Please note that, if I use PS/2 keyboard and mouse, power LED will blink in ACPI S3 state. I have not tested this mainboard with ACPI S1 state. If Canonical developers need more information, please feel free to contact me. I really want this bug fixed. [Bug 976397] [NEW] in Kubuntu 12.04, plasma-desktop does not start in the KDE session
Public bug reported: Its been like this for a while in the Kubuntu 12.04 alpha and beta, I'm sorry I didn't report this sooner. When I specify a KDE workspace session under LightDM, when I log in I get krunner, but not plasma-desktop. This happens for all users on my computer, including the guest user and a user I created new specifically for testing. I've tried apt-get install --reinstall plasma-desktop but to no avail. When I type plasma-desktop in krunner, then the desktop just starts fine. The same thing if I browse (using Dolphin) to /usr/share/autostart and double click on the plasma-desktop entry. Printing from evince/chromium/firefox however seems to submit data to print queue as PDF, which seems to result in a call by foomatic-rip to gs, which for most jobs other than text with no graphics runs for an indefinitely long period of time whilst utilising 100% CPU. I did a ps -ewf to see what options gs is being called with and was able to confirm that manually running ghostscript from the command line against more or less any PDF file I have results in the same condition of an indefinitely long run period. A search on google came up with many very similar issues but they are all very old and supposedly already resolved. However, I took my inspiration from these old problem reports and tried inserting a -dNOTRANSPARENCY into the gs command line and found that this causes gs to complete its processing in one to two seconds and the resultant postscript output which I suppose would normally in the next stage be passed off to foo2zjs for further processing seems to be OK. So to sum up, I can simulate the gs command from the command line, inserting an extra -dNOTRANSPARENCY switch and this seems to work around my problem with printing, but I cannot print from from any application other than Libre Office as I do not know how to tell foomatic-rip to pass this extra switch for me when it calls ghostscript (I guess this is hard-coded?) What I would like, (if my understanding is so far correct) is ultimately a bug fix to ghostscript, and if this going to take a long time then perhaps in the meantime you could supply me with a way to insert that extra switch into the processing of my print jobs so I might perhaps have a usable workaround in the meantime. Thank you for your time and consideration of my problem. * Other info: shompoe@shompoe-TOSHIBA-NB305:~$ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu precise (development branch) Release:12.04 shompoe@shompoe-TOSHIBA-NB305:~$ apt-cache policy ghostscript ghostscript: Installed: 9.05~dfsg-0ubuntu3 Candidate: 9.05~dfsg-0ubuntu3 Version table: *** 9.05~dfsg-0ubuntu3 0 500 http://ftp.sjtu.edu.cn/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: ghostscript 9.05~dfsg-0ubuntu3 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-20.32-generic 3.2.12 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-20-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 1.95-0ubuntu1 Architecture: amd64 Date: Fri Mar 30 08:24:42 2012 Lpstat: device for HP-LaserJet-Pro-P1102: smb://MSHOME/REDROOM/Printer1102 MachineType: TOSHIBA TOSHIBA NB305 Papersize: a4 PpdFiles: HP-LaserJet-Pro-P1102: HP LaserJet Pro P1102 Foomatic/foo2zjs-z2 (recommended) ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-20-generic root=UUID=a705cec0-31d5-45f8-b7a3-f4b817016160 ro crashkernel=384M-2G:64M,2G-:128M apparmor=0 splash quiet vt.handoff=7 SourcePackage: ghostscript UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) dmi.bios.date: 03/16/2010 dmi.bios.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.bios.version: V1.40 dmi.board.name: NPVAA dmi.board.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.board.version: 1.00 dmi.chassis.asset.tag: * dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.chassis.version: N/A dmi.modalias:

[Bug 947440] Re: FolderViewScreenlet.py crashed with UnboundLocalError in gnomedesk_get(): local variable 'name' referenced before assignment
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find. ** Visibility changed to: Public -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/947440 Title: FolderViewScreenlet.py crashed with UnboundLocalError in gnomedesk_get(): local variable 'name' referenced before assignment To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indiv-screenlets/+bug/947440/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 873791] Re: Ubiquity (Xubuntu) Hangs on laptop-detect on a Desktop
I experienced this bug while installing Ubuntu besides Windows Vista. Here's my workaround: Kill Ubiquity (the installer) via terminal when it freezes at laptop-detect: $ sudo killall ubiquity Then restart it: $ sudo ubiquity And then choose Upgrade existing Ubuntu installation.
