[Bug 1000244] Re: resolv.conf not populated because /etc/resolv.conf symlink was not created

2012-06-02 Thread Thomas Hood
It would be helpful if the administrator's own answer to resolvconf
/linkify-resolvconf were recorded somewhere before the value of the
latter gets reset to false in the postinst.

Better yet, perhaps: Change the postinst so that it doesn't fiddle with
the answer to linkify-resolvconf; instead create a new question,
resolvconf/linkify-done, which gets sets from false to true on
linkification and whose value being true prevents linkification being
repeated on subsequent postinst runs.

Even better would be to return to having an idempotent postinst; but
then another solution would have to be found for the problem that the
debconf-fiddling solved.

Regarding #1000244 itself, we still have the unsolved mystery of how pdf
could clean-install 12.04 and end up with no resolv.conf symlink (see
comment #10).

there were over 100 files updated when I checked this weekend and after

2012-06-02 Thread Patrick Santos
May you give an example of a web page that triggers the issue? (e.g. if it's a
video, link to the specific video if possible)
Also, have you tried another browser such as Chromium or Epiphany?

>From the following lines it looks like it's a media plugin that's taking
up all your CPU which is causing the stuttering issues you are seeing.

you may want to try to enable HTML5 (rather than Flash):

On a recent Ubuntu 12.04 install /boot had 51.5MB used. Suggest you
increase /boot to at least 100MB - requirements are likely to grow in
future versions since most things seem to need more space as time goes by.

[Bug 998712] Re: dnsmasq integration into name resolution broken

2012-06-02 Thread Thomas Hood
I'd just like to note here before leaving this issue that the submitter
originally said that he was running bind. If bind was set up to listen
on 127.0.0.1#53 but was not correctly set up to provide name service
then I imagine that this could have interfered with the NM-controlled
dnsmasq. Exploring this possibility would have required cooperation by
the submitter, but, unfortunately, the submitter is no longer willing to
cooperate because he lacks time and has found a workaround that he is
satisfied with.

[Bug 1006154] Re: I can't open terminal

2012-06-02 Thread Patrick Santos
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

**Specifically, what do you mean by "terminals"? Graphical terminal
emulators (e.g. xterm, konsole, gnome-terminal)?

Thanks!

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)

2012-06-02 Thread yurx cherio
I have Nehalem Lynnfield i7 860 + nvidia GeForce GT 220.
My freezes occur when running either Unity 3D or 2D (64amd). Freezes persist
after upgrading to 3.3.6, 3.3.7 and 3.4.

Originally I was suspecting different culprit applications e.g. Chrome,
VirtualBox, Eclipse IDE, Totem player, etc but later I experienced
freezes when these applications were not running.

At the office I have a workstation withe SAME hardware configuration
(including nvidia model and drivers) which runs XFCE and it doesn't
freeze which points to Unity/Compiz as a potential culprit.

[Bug 635464] Re: "Find it in menu" hint should use X-GNOME-FullName

2012-06-02 Thread Mike Mestnik
Applications have a .desktop file, but I think it's more accurate to say
that a package provides menu entries in a .desktop file.

Actually this is causing problems for me, as many applications don't
read and possibly won't ever read .desktop files. That's the reason
Debian created it's menu system.

I believe that any package providing .desktop file(s) should be
corrected to provide the menu file and if there are deficiencies in the
menu package/system they should be addressed and corrected.

...I don't believe there are any, the menu system will populate .desktop
files with the correct information.

[Bug 1007621] Re: open file dialog in glchess is shrinked, unusable

2012-06-02 Thread Patrick Santos
Confirmed - simply click on the Chess game window and click Ctrl+O. I
suggest importance HIGH as it essentially renders the load function
useless.

Result: The "Load chess game" dialog is that the fields in the dialog window
take up a very small portion vertically on the screen, making it almost
impossible to select something.
Expected result: The dialog should be scaled correctly.

2012-06-02 Thread Sebastien Douche
Hi Serge,
the bug was confirmed by Stefan Hajnoczi[1] and still in QEMU 1.1:

"Unfortunately there has not been a fix. The cause of the bug is known
and described in the email thread you linked. If someone has time to
write a fix and test it, it could be merged. It won't be possible for
QEMU 1.1 since the release is imminent."

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently while watching videos (Fixed by 3.3.6 kernel)

2012-06-02 Thread pureblood
Since the bug many people are experiencing is related to hard freezes
where you *cannot* move the mouse anymore or ssh the machine, maybe a
new bug should be opened with these directions in the title, and then
people should be directed from this thread to that thread instead. I
confirm that I am still experiencing this issue with kernel
3.4.0-030400-generic, that there is no obvious trigger (most of the
times it happens while the computer is on at night or while I am at work
and nobody is using it), that it happened with KDE as well as Unity. I
have a new Vostro V131 which, I believe, is a Sandy bridge(?). Are most
of the people with *this* version of the bug running Intel systems with
integrated graphic card? I would like to understand what we have in
common. It would be a first step.

[Bug 1007988] [NEW] No Ubuntu or Windows boot after failed boot-repair

2012-06-02 Thread Paul Foos
Public bug reported:

The original problem was that Ubuntu would not launch on my dual boot
machine. I got errors like: "failed command: read DMA EXT" and "status
DRDY ERR" and "error UNC." Messages that made me wonder about hard
drive failure. However, after I ran boot-repair (from an Ubuntu 12.04
live CD) and it failed, I lost my boot screen and couldn't get into
Ubuntu or Windows. All the disk scans I ran showed no hard drive
problems.. I got failure messages during the boot repair. Here is the
report from the repair: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1019494/

[Bug 989900] Re: DNS Resolve Problems in Ubuntu 12.04

2012-06-02 Thread Ryan Farmer
Having Network Manager set to use dnsmasq doesn't get along very well
with Comcast, using the suggestion of commenting out the dnsmasq line
from /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and restarting the network-
manager service fixed the problem for me.

As usual, the rolling list of crap I have to edit by hand to work around
Ubuntu's bugs that they can't or won't fix or claim is not a bug
continues to grow.

Changing the problem to "Incomplete" instead of attempting to figure out
what got you to the point where you have broken internet access for
millions of Comcast users and hoping the problem fades off into the
sunset with not another word spoken about it exemplifies everything I've
come to expect from Ubuntu developers.

How about reverting it to the way it was in 11.10, which wasn't broken,
and letting the few users who actually NEED dnsmasq turn it on
themselves. Radical concept?

I'm seeing this on one of my machines (12.04 32 bit install);
about:plugins shows flash there, but going to say news.bbc.co.uk and
picking a video story or the live channel doesn't even show the box
where the flash should be - it's got the page formatted entirely without
the flash box there.

I'm seeing an entry each time I do that in the .mozilla/Crash Reports
directory.

No extra debug is produced running firefox on the command line.

[Bug 995886] Re: browse/import photos from camera broken in 12.04

2012-06-02 Thread wild_oscar
I have a Canon 20D and seem to have the exact same problem.

I've tried connecting the camera via usb (normal, not PTP, mode) on 3
computers:

- Laptop 1 with Ubuntu 12.04
- Laptop 2 with Ubuntu 12.04
- Desktop with Ubuntu 10.10

On both Ubuntu 12.04 machines, in Nautilus:
1) I can open the [Camera]/DCIM directory;
2) When I try to open a xxxCanon directory the computer will freeze, hard drive
will start to be hammered and will stay like that indefinitely

I'm currently reporting this on my desktop with 10.10 *while* importing
the pictures from the exact same camera and usb cable. It's importing
without any problems or hickups.

How can I help you guys figure this out? It's a blocker bug for using
the computer with the camera.

[Bug 966744] Re: Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended (though the mouse still moves/changes cursor)

2012-06-02 Thread David MacBride
I think I've reproduced this same error, though the scenario is slightly
different:

System Info
- Lenovo thinkpad X200 notebook
- Intel GM45 Express graphics
- Ubuntu 12.04 32bit (x86-32). up-to-date as of June 2 / 2012

Steps to reproduce
- set setting "when the lid is closed"="do nothing" in Power settings
- set "Lock" to "On" in Brightness and Lock settings
- check "Require my password when waking from suspend" in Brightness and Lock
settings
- close the lid
- open the lid

expected results: I see the log in dialog

actual result: backlit but dark screen, mouse cursor still moves as
normal, mouse cursor changes as I move it around the screen as if it is
responding to diff't UI elements. Occasionally the display is
different: instead of blank/black screen other windows are visible,
such as the dock and the top panel... but when that happens I cannot
interact with them.

The issue is intermittent. Cannot be reproduced all the time.

Gut feeling: the windows that are supposed to be drawn when the
computer is locked eg: when just the wallpaper and the login dialog are
supposed to be visible) are for some reason not rendered at the front,
though they are the 'active' windows (I'm not an X programmer so I'm not
sure of the right X terminology).

I don't recall this being an issue on either of 11.04 or 11.10.

I'm having the same problem. This is just after three days of failure to

attempted installation of English language package, and in fact the same
error message seen at the bottom of this conservation is Germain. There
are 301 upgrades that can't be downloaded.

[Bug 902970] Re: /dev/usb/lp0 missing after update to 11.10

2012-06-02 Thread DAP
Ray Strilec was correct. I did not follow his instructions before
because I was at the time getting a /dev/usb/lp0. When /dev/usb/lp0 did
not appear this time, I followed the linked instructions, and now I can
print.

Thanks.

[Bug 1007976] Re: Windows jump to different workspace when switching workspace

2012-06-02 Thread Serrano Pereira
** Description changed:

This bug happens in Gnome Classic (not in Unity) when the "Desktop Wall"
plugin is enabled in Compiz. You must also have at least three
workspaces/desktops horizontally in order to reproduce this.

- When a window is on workspace #2 or higher (horizontally), and you move
- to a workspace on the right of the window, all windows on the left of
- that workspace jump to the workspace on the far left (workspace #1).
+ When a maximized window is on workspace #2 or higher (horizontally), and
+ you move to a workspace on the right of the window, all maximized
+ windows on the left of that workspace jump to the workspace on the far
+ left (workspace #1).

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Choose "Gnome Classic" at the login screen and log in.
- 2) Say we have four workspaces horizontally (numbered 1 to 4). Place a window
on workspace #2 (doesn't matter which application).
+ 2) Say we have four workspaces horizontally (numbered 1 to 4). Place a window
on workspace #2 (doesn't matter which application, but it must be maximized).
  3) Use Ctrl+Alt+arrow right (or Expo) to move to a workspace on the right
(workspace #3 or #4).

Result: The window that was previously on workspace #2 is now on workspace #1.
Expected result: The window should stay on workspace #2.

I should note that I have the "Ubuntu Unity" plugin disabled in Compiz.

[Bug 995541] Re: firefox hang (crash) ubuntu 12.04

2012-06-02 Thread Aaron Calder
I have the same bug. Whenever I use firefox my system freezes.
Displays static image of desktop at the moment when it freezes. Mouse
won't move. No keyboard response. Unable to Ctrl-Alt-F2 into terminal.
Unable to remote ssh into machine and any ssh sessions that are open
freeze. Have to hold hardware power off button to shut down. Has only
been a problem since upgrade to 12.04 but unsure if symptoms started at
initial upgrade or later. Firefox freezes the system both when using
fglrx (AMD) display driver or the mesa open source driver.

[Bug 1007976] Re: Windows jump to different workspace when switching workspace

2012-06-02 Thread Serrano Pereira
I discovered that the above behavior no longer happens after lowering
the screen resolution. My default resolution is 1366x768, so I used
gnome-control-center to lower the resolution to 1360x768. After that, I
can no longer reproduce the bug. I can even change back to the default
resolution without the bug to reappear.

But by logging out and back in, the bug appears again.

[Bug 902970] Re: /dev/usb/lp0 missing after update to 11.10

2012-06-02 Thread DAP
There was an update to CUPs, so I thought I'd give this another try.
Unfortunately after the update /dev/usb/lp0 no-longer appears.
I have three different USB to parallel adaptors. All three show up on LSUSB,
but none will cause any change to the /dev directory.
Two use the Prolific PL2305 part (one of these was working in 10.x), one uses
MosChip Semiconductor MCS7705 (I've never seen this one work).

2012-06-02 Thread Serrano Pereira
Public bug reported:

This bug happens in Gnome Classic (not in Unity) when the "Desktop Wall"
plugin is enabled in Compiz. You must also have at least three
workspaces/desktops horizontally in order to reproduce this.

When a window is on workspace #2 or higher (horizontally), and you move
to a workspace on the right of the window, the window jumps to the
workspace on the far left (workspace #1).

Steps to reproduce:
1) Choose "Gnome Classic" at the login screen and log in.
2) Say we have four workspaces horizontally (numbered 1 to 4). Place a window
on workspace #2 (doesn't matter which application).
3) Use Ctrl+Alt+arrow right to move to workspace #3.

Result: The window that was previously on workspace #2 is now on workspace #1.
Expected result: The window should stay on workspace #2.

[Bug 1007259] Re: Sync fftw3 3.3.2-1 (main) from Debian sid (main)

2012-06-02 Thread Julian Taylor
unfortunately its a bit more complicated than a sync due the library being in
main.
fftw3 in debian now depends on mpi which is not in main. I guess it would need
to be patched out as adding mpi to main is unlikely.

[Bug 1004845] Re: python-keyring CryptedFileKeyring is insecure (was: doesn't work with python-crypto 2.6-1 (ValueError: IV must be 16 bytes long))

2012-06-02 Thread Sebastian Ramacher
I've implemented a new CryptedFileKeyring based on Dwayne's
recommendation and created an upstream pull request:
https://bitbucket.org/kang/python-keyring-lib/pull-request/13/implement-
new-cryptedfilekeyring

I'd really appreciate a review since it's the first time that I've done
something with PBKDF2.
