Is it safe to use quantal kernels on 12.04 (safe as will it boot up, this is a

2012-07-03 Thread Doug McMahon

I'm cdrtainly not yet in a position to say whether there are any perf issues,
like many others there is enough else gone south to preclude judging at all
(here nautilus has a half-life of 15 sec's or so

One 'issue' may be is at what point, if any, do these unique dir.'s stop being
created?
After 1 hr. with one restart & a couple of log out/in's I've got 120 dir.

Will I have 500 or more next week, 3000 next month, ect., ect.?.

Atm users can stop this by removing at-spi2-core, whether advisable
don't know, whether there are plans to dep at-spi2-core other than to
ubuntu-desktop also don't know

[Bug 915752] Re: Computer freezes, forcing restart in recovery mode to avoid crash again.

What does this status change mean? What should I do now? I'm thinking
maybe I should retro back to Lubuntu 11.10, but I'm not sure how to do
that.

[Bug 1020777] [NEW] Resume regression between 3.2.0-24.39 & 3.2.0-26.41 on an HP dv7

2012-07-03 Thread Andrew Mitchell
Public bug reported:

With the most recent kernel in precise-updates (3.2.0-26.41) I've
repeatedly had the laptop poweroff a second or so after fans spin up
when resuming. Pressing the power button to turn it back on does not
work, I've had to remove the battery for a few seconds & put back in for
it to turn on again. Booting with the 3.2.0-24.39 kernel which I had
installed previously has not exhibited this behaviour since switching
back to this kernel & resuming 3-4 times.

[Bug 1019389] Re: Grub 2 hangs on boot after installing on RAID1 device (/dev/md0), reports no problems during install

2012-07-03 Thread Phillip Susi
The debian/ubuntu installer won't let you create such a setup ( it
doesn't allow partitioning raid devices ) and I'm pretty sure it's
unsupported. You need to partition the individual disks and build an
array out of the partitions, then install grub to the individual disks,
not the whole array.

[Bug 951095] Re: New windows appear behind existing ones using Unity

2012-07-03 Thread Mark Fernandes
Just checked with fully up-to-date precise and bug persists. Steps to
reproduce:

1. open gnome-terminal
2. Go to full-screen
3. type "evince" which opens correctly in foreground but
"gvim/chromium-browser/nautilus" open incorrectly in background

Basically gnome-based apps open correctly in foreground but others are
random

By the way... After lightdm, gdm became the default and apt-get purge on
gdm caused exactly the same error, gdm processes hanged around and there
was no (easy/user-friendly) way of shutting down gdm. It appears that
the order of the things during uninstalling these is not correct
(shutdown, remove).

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-03 Thread Chowno
I am VERY to report that the instructions given by #91, installing the
3.3.6 kernel, completely resolves the problem. I am using the non-pae
kernel and the stock xorg packages. Initially I was using edgers to get
access to the newer ati drivers (which work quite well if it weren't for
this bug) and the 3.5.0 kernel they use must be tainted with this bug as
well, or it is some other stability problem inherent to that ppa. So to
reiterate - I reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04, fully updated it and followed
thread #91 to resolve the issue. Can this get fast-tracked to the
mainstream updates? It seems silly to sit on it when so many people are
effected by this bug. Thanks for all of your help everyone! :) This
is what Linux is all about!!!

[Bug 763422] Re: [i965] idle black screen plus other issues Ubuntu 11.04

2012-07-03 Thread Carl Farrington
Here is a video of the problem as I see it:

http://youtu.be/Jgu4dpmg_0c

worth noting that I'm not 100% the hyperlinks are really activating upon click
(in the video I said that they were). Although my wifi starts to blink, I think
the mouse cursor would change if a click on a hyperlink was actually doing
anything/following the link.
I should run a tcpdump next time to check, but it may not be relevant to the
problem anyway.

Anything I can do to help troubleshoot?

[Bug 1020771] [NEW] FTBFS: Tests fail on non-x86

2012-07-03 Thread Ben Collins
Public bug reported:

During the build of tests, they fail as such on non-x86:

gcc -g -O2 -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4 -Wformat
-Werror=format-security -nostdlib -T ./test.lds -m64 -o test.elf test.o
/usr/bin/ld: cannot represent machine `i386:x86-64'
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

I suspect that this package should just be i386/amd64, but if there's an
easy way to handle the building of the tests on non-x86, then that works
too.

[Bug 1020770] [NEW] gdm install prompts about dm when debconf value set

2012-07-03 Thread Todd Taft
Public bug reported:

When installing gdm 3.0.4-0ubuntu15 on a 12.04 system via aptitude, I
get prompted as to which dm I want to use, even if I have already set

Steps to reproduce:
echo "gdm shared/default-x-display-manager select lightdm"
|debconf-set-selections
aptitude -y install gdm

[Bug 1020229] Re: package python3-distupgrade (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/DistUpgrade/__init__.py', which is also in package python3-

2012-07-03 Thread Anders Kaseorg
Szobonya, no, it’s more complicated than that. The empty __init__.py
file is important to how the Python module loader works.

The solution is for python3-distupgrade to declare ‘Breaks: python3
-update-manager (<< 1:0.165)’ and ‘Replaces: python3-update-manager (<<
1:0.165)’.

[Bug 1020767] [NEW] Suspending hangs computer

2012-07-03 Thread Worik
Public bug reported:

This has happened twice so far.

I suspend my laptop (using menu) the mand wen I turn it back on I get a
black screen with the mouse pointer painted white and working
sporadically in that when I move my finger on the trackboard and wait a
while the mouse pointer jiggles.

I switched out to a terminal (C-A-F1) and logged in. I killed xdg-
screensaver and I could log in.

I have NFI what package I should file this against, too busy to care.
So filed against ubuntu-desktop

[Bug 1020769] [NEW] Standard user can't change own empty password

2012-07-03 Thread Aleve Sicofante
Public bug reported:

This has been experienced in Ubuntu 12.04, completely updated before
proceeding.

I set up a system for my elderly parents. I created an administrator
account for me, then a standard account for them with an empty password.

They called me asking how to create a password for their account. I
guided them to the settings manager only to find that they couldn't
change their empty password.

I had to create a password from my admin account first. Then they could
change it through the standard mechanisms.

It should be possible for a standard user to change its own empty
password.

[Bug 985975] Re: [wacom]: won't calibrate X220t

2012-07-03 Thread Richard Brown
@Timo: I couldn't install the .deb due to dependency issues (it also
wanted a newer version of libwacom-common, and when I tried to install
that there were further problems). Was I doing it wrong?

I tried installed Alpha 2 on a new partition and updating it to test it
that way, but Alpha 2 currently doesn't recognise the hardware at all.
So jury is still out as to whether this will work or not.

[Bug 1019397] Re: Quantal, latest alpha can't boot on GMA500

2012-07-03 Thread Henrik Tikanvaara
I have a feeling the gma500_gfx module might not be compiled in the
Ubuntu kernel. I am building a custom kernel to test this assumption
right now, but my poor netbook is very slow. :-) I will report back with
the results. The kernel in question is the latest quantal kernel with
gma500 and suboptions enabled.

[Bug 1020762] [NEW] Trying to install IntelliJ for $0.00 loops on brand new 12.04 install

2012-07-03 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

Title says it all: a brand new install of 12.04 - not an upgrade from
anything - and when I try to install IntelliJ for $0.00, not only does
it insist that I sign in to 'buy' it (which is stupid) but it sits there
looping with this message and a spinner:

Processing your request for “IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition”…

Information received

Not very informative. Hopefully it'll make sense to you. I'm off to
download it from IntelliJ and install it normally.

Perhaps things costing $0.00 shouldn't have to go through the sso
nonsense too?

[Bug 769644] Re: Alt-F2 (or "lxpanelctl run") doesn't work

2012-07-03 Thread Benjamin Eltzner
Same as described in #17. None of the lxpanelctl commands work for me;
neither from the terminal, nor from keybindings.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 and installed the lubuntu-desktop metapackage
to test the DE. My version of the lxpanel package is the newest one
from the standard repository, i.e. 0.5.8+git20120212-0ubuntu3. I have
not touched the default WM openbox, the package version of which is
3.5.0-2ubuntu2.

Maybe the following output is helpful in any way:

~$ xwininfo -tree -root
xwininfo: Window id: 0x15d (the root window) (has no name)
Root window id: 0x15d (the root window) (has no name)
  Parent window id: 0x0 (none)
 [...]
-0x123 "lxpanel": () 10x10+-100+-100 +-100+-100
-0x121 "lxpanel": ("lxpanel" "Lxpanel") 10x10+10+10 +10+10
[...]
  --0x122 (has no name): () 1x1+-1+-1 +9+9
 [...]
-0xe00100 (has no name): () 1920x24+0+0 +0+0
[...]
   --0x120001d "panel": ("panel" "lxpanel") WIDTHx24+0+0 +0+0

Where WIDTH is simply my monitors width. (The - signs were added by me to make
inheritance/level in the tree visible more easily.)
It seems quite peculiar to me that the window "panel" seems to have an alias(?)
of some sort named "lxpanel", while two(!?) other windows named "lxpanel"
exist. Even more peculiar to me is that semingly the window "panel" is the
lxpanel, as it has the appropriate size. Also all these Windows are unrelated
except for the common descendence from the root window. From a complete laymans
perspective I figure this might be vaguely related to the problem. I apologize
if I am completely off the mark.

[Bug 904261] Re: Lenovo U300s does not suspend

2012-07-03 Thread Cliff Wells
@Colin

Thanks for your .debs. Now for an additional favor: turns out the
Dell/Canonical Project Sputnick touchpad driver works great on the U300s
and removes the other biggest point-of-pain on this hardware.

Any chance you'd be willing to build some kernel debs with both the
suspend/resume patches and the Sputnik touchpad drivers?

Re: [Bug 1020512] Re: Assistive Technologies is spamming .cache with many folders like at-spi2-AYBRGW for example

2012-07-03 Thread Luke Yelavich
GNOME upstream for 3.5/3.6 have decided to enable accessibility by
default, which means at-spi2 is always going to be running, hense why
trying to disable it from startup applications does nothing. It needs to
be hidden from startup applications, but the startup file is still
needed for other desktop environments which still enable accessibility
selectively.

Is this adversely affecting the performance of your system? I get the
same thing here on Quantal, and all those at-spi directories only take
up 1.7MB or so. If you are not using orca or other assistive technology
tools, then you shouldn't notice any difference.

[Bug 932399] Re: Lenovo u300s Touchpad is detected as imPS mouse

2012-07-03 Thread Cliff Wells
Just a note: the Project Sputnik driver also works on the U300s.
Unfortunately their kernel doesn't include the suspend/resume patch also
needed on the U300s. Still, at least you have the option of building a
custom kernel with both patchsets.

[Bug 1020759] [NEW] /run/media is an unnecessary divergence from the FHS

2012-07-03 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

The FHS specifies that /media should be used as the mountpoint for

[Bug 1020756] [NEW] GtkTreeView keyboard binding are not intituive

2012-07-03 Thread Damián Nohales
Public bug reported:

Most GUIs, like MacOS X, Microsoft Windows and Qt handle the keyboard bindings
for its treeviews in the same way: user can easily expand, collapse and move
into tree nodes using only the arrow keys.

In Gtk+, however, is quite different. User needs to press "plus" and "minus"
key to collapse and expand nodes, leaving Right and Left arrows with
essentially null functionality. Well yeah, that keys allow to move horizontally
into row cells.
Seeing many of the applications written using Gtk+, there are not many cases
where user find useful moving horizontally across the row with the keyboard,
most GtkTreeView that I see are simple and used only to show information.
So I guess the current GtkTreeView behaviour is crazy, not useful in most
cases, goes against intuition and against good User Experience.

I'm really not familiar with Gtk+ programming but, as user, I find this "bug"
extremely annoying in my day to day.

So, I make some changes in Gtk+ to enhance (from my point of view) the behavior
of GtkTreeView with the keyboard.

The attached patch to the 3.4 branch modifies the default GtkTreeView behaviour
with the keyboard, expanding nodes with the right arrow and collapsing it with
left arrow, selecting parent and child nodes when appropriate:
 - When user press Left on a collapsed node, Gtk+ select the parent node.
 - When user press right on an expanded node, Gtk+ select the first child node.
Users that want to navigate into cells horizontally (as I can see, a non
frecuent use case) will need to press Ctrl+. Users can still move
to the parent node with the Backspace key, without collapsing anything.

I don't know exactly if this behavior change break some expected behavior to
application programmer, I hope not.

A last question, Why Gtk+ programmers implemented the current GtkTreeView
behavior
knowing the big difference with other tested GUIs?

Best Regards!

[Bug 1019081] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 Dell XPS 13 (Centrino Advanced-N 6230) can't connect to WPA Enterprise wireless

2012-07-03 Thread Neo
@psypher, just check with my IT department, we are using Aruba APs.

I think I have found the issue that causes the problem after comparing
the success and failure logs.

[ 29.704853] wlan0: Wrong control channel in association response:
configured center-freq: 5180 hti-cfreq: 5805  hti->control_chan: 161
band: 1. Disabling HT.

I think the change from John should fix this issue eventually, but it
requires a lot of patches to merge to
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=kamal/ubuntu-
precise.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/dellxps tree.

So I just simply disable that checking and it works for me, attached the
change.

** Patch added: "Disable HT chekcing to allow my wireless connect to APs"

[Bug 952392] Re: synaptic crashed with SIGSEGV in vfprintf()

2012-07-03 Thread Hans Petter Birkeland
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 940621 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/940621

Seems Marius is right. I'm Norwegian too and this occurs on Synaptic
0.75.9ubuntu1 in Linux Mint 13 as well. Using sudo LANG=en_EN.utf8
synaptic works but is not very practical since the Package Manager entry
in MintMenu is not editable, and also MintUpdate can not install updates
because of this.

[Bug 1019496] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 hangs on reboot

2012-07-03 Thread dennyg...@gmail.com
For some reason the link on the top labeled "linux-kernel-bugs #44221."
with the link "http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44221."; shows
an invalid bug number at Kernel Bug Tracker.

I think it's because of the added . (period) at the end of the URL.

The link I posted above still works:
