[Bug 1025315] Re: Add "recommended" flag to driver info

2012-07-16 Thread Martin Pitt
Thinking about this again, the "manual install" flag does not make sense
here, as system_driver_packages() _only_ lists driver packages. Whether
they come from Ubuntu or third-party is already covered by the
from_distro flag. So the "manual install" flag will only appear in the
by-device grouping from bug 1025323.

[Bug 1024313] Re: More than one client with nfs home directories will cause freeze

2012-07-16 Thread Andrey Konstantinov
Bad word choice on my side, of course downgrading to NFSv3 is not a fix,
but rather a workaround. We have also been using NFSv4 since 10.04 and
NFSv3 has problems with lock files, as far as I've heard, so of course
NFSv4 needs to be fixed.

Additional information (not sure if relevant to this bug but might be):
NFSv4 takes a minute or two to mount user home directories after boot so
one cannot login right away: "bootwait" option needs to be added to
/etc/fstab in order to make the machine wait until NFS home is mounted
and only display the login screen after. Again, this does not happen
with NFSv3 and did not happen with NFSv4 on 10.04. Whatever changes were
done to NFSv4 since 11.10, they only made things worse.

Re: [Bug 1019621] Re: Precise abiword version needs to be reverted to stable release prior to 12.04.1

2012-07-16 Thread msevior
Hi everyone,

abiword-2.8.6 will not break an abiword-2.9.2 configuration.

If you can't roll back to 2.8.6 your should at least upgrade to 2.9.3
which has far fewer bugs.

Cheers

Martin

[Bug 1018630] Re: [needs-packaging] libsecret

2012-07-16 Thread Robert Ancell
Tests work when run from git build, but not from packaging so the
packaging in lp:~robert-ancell/libsecret/ubuntu has the tests disabled.

Not sure what to do with the translations - they come from both the tool
and the library but the library neither initialises gettext. So I
suspect the library either needs to be updated or it shouldn't provide
translated strings (they're only in errors). The translations are
currently packaged with the libsecret-tools binary package (unsure if
this is a good name).

[Bug 1025537] [NEW] (CVE-2012-2806) libjpeg-turbo: Heap-based buffer overflow when decompressing corrupt JPEG images

2012-07-16 Thread karma
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

A Heap-based buffer overflow was found in the way libjpeg-turbo
decompressed certain corrupt JPEG images in which the component count
was erroneously set to a large value. An attacker could create a
specially-crafted JPEG image that, when opened, could cause an
application using libpng to crash or, possibly, execute arbitrary code
with the privileges of the user running the application.

[Bug 765438] Re: On startup, the backlight is off on laptop

2012-07-16 Thread Reid Boyce
There was only one comment about how the Fn+ Right Arrow key, makes this
symbol. ±. Everytime I push it, it makes the symbol. ±. It
doesn't do that for Fn+ Left Arrow key though. Hopefully that will get
resolved as well. I hope that there will soon be a fix for this whole
mess, I have had to deal with it for several years now, and it is
completely repulsive to think that everytime I install a new linix
distro on my laptop, I have to deal with all of this screen brightness
not working stuff.

[Bug 806761] Re: Feature Request: Upstart scripts for nslcd

2012-07-16 Thread Caleb Callaway
Okay, after reading the Daemon Behavior section of the Upstart cookbook
(http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/#daemon-behaviour), I've settled on
a solution that I'm reasonably happy with: looping in a post-start
script until the ticket cache is detected on the file system _or_ a
timeout occurs (so we don't stall the job start process indefinitely)

Patch is attached. Contains the updated logic, as well as miscellaneous
edits for clarity.

[Bug 484102] Re: Grub2 doesn't chainload truecrypt loader correctly

2012-07-16 Thread Attila Lendvai
so, to sum it up:

1) when installing grub2 it needs/overwrites more then just the first
sector (first 512 bytes, aka the MBR)

2) TC uses the first 64 sectors (its MBR, then some code to decrypt the
system, and some encryption keys)

3) when chainloading a backed up TC MBR from a file using grub2, then it
tries to read sectors 2-64 from the physical driver, which has been
overwritten by grub2

workarounds:

11) install grub2 into a partition (which is not recommended and warns
at install), instead of the MBR, and press ESC at the TC screen to boot
linux

12) boot the TC rescue iso image (IIUC, no one reported this to work)

13) use grub2tc to generate a kernel from the TC rescue iso image (no
reports here that it works, but most probably it does)

possible solutions (? this is just wild speculation):

21) smarten up grub2 chainload, and chainload TC so that the MBR is
ignored and the decryption code, that normally gets loaded/started by
the TC MBR, gets loaded/started by grub2 chainload

22) change grub2 to work from a single MBR sector (as grub1 used to?)

23) add feature to grub2 to hijack the bios routines reading from the
disk in case of a chainloading a file, and read data from the file
instead of the physical disk

24) write/compile a special version of the TC boot loader that assumes
that all the required data is in the memory already.

i think 21) would be the best solution, but again, this is wild
speculation, i lack the required background in grub2/booting/etc.

please, do correct me if my understanding of the issue is wrong!

[Bug 1024435] Re: [MIR] qpdf

2012-07-16 Thread Tobias Hoffmann
I'm the one currently working on the new libqpdf-based pdf-
implementation.

The old implementation of pdftopdf does not duplicate that much of poppler, but
it has a class structure that /parallels/ the poppler document representation,
because poppler was never built to /output/ pdfs, but pdftopdf has to! This is
done by all the P2P*-classes in pdftopdf: They can actually recreate the
pdf-objects that poppler parsed.
So there is quite tight coupling of pdftopdf to the poppler internals, but
there are much less eyes looking at pdftopdf than are looking at the
poppler-code.
This make maintainance of pdftopdf tedious across changes between poppler
versions.
IMO this current state does not benefit security at all.

qpdf is extensively tested, and built for the job: It provides an c
++-object-oriented interface to the pdf-objects, but does not interpret
their contents, except for the very basic structure (root catalog, pages
tree), and neither does the new pdftodf -- because it does not have to.
Basically all the transformations can be done without actually looking
at the exact values from the input pdf; it's either pass-it-through or
throw-it-away. That means: The actual code surface actually "exposed" to
potentially dangerous inputs is quite small.

[Bug 1025527] [NEW] Dell Latitude E6410: 12.04 crashes when on battery

2012-07-16 Thread Ashton Fagg
Public bug reported:

When on battery power, my Dell Latitude E6410 freezes after a random
amount of time. It does not matter if it is a fresh boot, or coming out
of suspend. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all, other times it does. The
screen completely freezes, I can't even move the cursor (nor can I
switch to a tty). The WiFi light blinks really fast, which makes me
think it could be a kernel panic. I am using the proprietary nVidia
drivers. I have never had this happen on AC power.

I read another bug report which suggested that Intel Speedstep may be at
fault. I disabled it in the BIOS and this doesn't make a difference.

[Bug 1025525] [NEW] DRM buffer permission model is inadequate

2012-07-16 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Public bug reported:

Currently the DRM permission model is roughly “if you've got drm master
you can access any buffer and if you don't have drm master you can't
access any of master's buffers”. This is ok for the existing fast-user-
switching method of spawning a new X server and then VT switching, as
the old server drops master and the new server becomes the drm master.

Actually, the above is a lie: currently the DRM permission model is ‘if
you're authenticated you can access any buffer any client has shared’,
and X proxies drm auth for all clients. VT switching drops master, but
dropping master does not drop authentication, so this does not prevent
inactive users from snooping on shared buffers.

For the system compositor this is a bit worse, as the root window of the
user sessions will be shared buffers.

[Bug 868034] Re: Huawei E220 and E1550 can't connect on Ubuntu 11.10

2012-07-16 Thread Aleksander Morgado
No, that last patch is for the case where usbif 0 doesn't show up.

The problem in this bugreport is that the PCUI and modem ports get
swapped when MM grabs them, and the proper fix for this should already
be in MM_06 and git master.

[Bug 484102] Re: Grub2 doesn't chainload truecrypt loader correctly

2012-07-16 Thread Lukas Bunsen
That's not true. I have Grub legacy in my MBR. If I want to boot
windows, Grub is loading an image of the Truecrypt Boot Loader from
/boot. It is working in that configuration, the only problem is that
Grub legacy is able to do that, Grub 2 is not, due to that bug.
