[Bug 1024313] Re: More than one client with nfs home directories will cause freeze
Bad word choice on my side, of course downgrading to NFSv3 is not a fix, but rather a workaround. We have also been using NFSv4 since 10.04 and NFSv3 has problems with lock files, as far as I've heard, so of course NFSv4 needs to be fixed. Additional information (not sure if relevant to this bug but might be): NFSv4 takes a minute or two to mount user home directories after boot so one cannot login right away: "bootwait" option needs to be added to /etc/fstab in order to make the machine wait until NFS home is mounted and only display the login screen after. Again, this does not happen with NFSv3 and did not happen with NFSv4 on 10.04. [Bug 484102] Re: Grub2 doesn't chainload truecrypt loader correctly
so, to sum it up: 1) when installing grub2 it needs/overwrites more then just the first sector (first 512 bytes, aka the MBR) 2) TC uses the first 64 sectors (its MBR, then some code to decrypt the system, and some encryption keys) 3) when chainloading a backed up TC MBR from a file using grub2, then it tries to read sectors 2-64 from the physical driver, which has been overwritten by grub2 workarounds: 11) install grub2 into a partition (which is not recommended and warns at install), instead of the MBR, and press ESC at the TC screen to boot linux 12) boot the TC rescue iso image (IIUC, no one reported this to work) 13) use grub2tc to generate a kernel from the TC rescue iso image (no reports here that it works, but most probably it does) possible solutions (? this is just wild speculation): 21) smarten up grub2 chainload, and chainload TC so that the MBR is ignored and the decryption code, that normally gets loaded/started by the TC MBR, gets loaded/started by grub2 chainload 22) change grub2 to work from a single MBR sector (as grub1 used to?) 23) add feature to grub2 to hijack the bios routines reading from the disk in case of a chainloading a file, and read data from the file instead of the physical disk 24) write/compile a special version of the TC boot loader that assumes that all the required data is in the memory already. i think 21) would be the best solution, but again, this is wild speculation, i lack the required background in grub2/booting/etc. please, do correct me if my understanding of the issue is wrong! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/484102 Title: Grub2 doesn't chainload truecrypt loader correctly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/484102/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1024435] Re: [MIR] qpdf
I'm the one currently working on the new libqpdf-based pdf- implementation. The old implementation of pdftopdf does not duplicate that much of poppler, but it has a class structure that /parallels/ the poppler document representation, because poppler was never built to /output/ pdfs, but pdftopdf has to! This is done by all the P2P*-classes in pdftopdf: They can actually recreate the pdf-objects that poppler parsed. So there is quite tight coupling of pdftopdf to the poppler internals, but there are much less eyes looking at pdftopdf than are looking at the poppler-code. This make maintainance of pdftopdf tedious across changes between poppler versions. IMO this current state does not benefit security at all. qpdf is extensively tested, and built for the job: It provides an c ++-object-oriented interface to the pdf-objects, but does not interpret their contents, except for the very basic structure (root catalog, pages tree), and neither does the new pdftodf -- because it does not have to. Basically all the transformations can be done without actually looking at the exact values from the input pdf; it's either pass-it-through or throw-it-away. That means: The actual code surface actually "exposed" to potentially dangerous inputs is quite small. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1024435 Title: [MIR] qpdf To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qpdf/+bug/1024435/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1025527] [NEW] Dell Latitude E6410: 12.04 crashes when on battery
Public bug reported: When on battery power, my Dell Latitude E6410 freezes after a random amount of time. It does not matter if it is a fresh boot, or coming out of suspend. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all, other times it does. The screen completely freezes, I can't even move the cursor (nor can I switch to a tty). The WiFi light blinks really fast, which makes me think it could be a kernel panic. I am using the proprietary nVidia drivers. I have never had this happen on AC power. I read another bug report which suggested that Intel Speedstep may be at fault. I disabled it in the BIOS and this doesn't make a difference. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1025527 Title: Dell Latitude E6410: 12.04 crashes when on battery To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1025527/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1025525] [NEW] DRM buffer permission model is inadequate
Public bug reported: Currently the DRM permission model is roughly “if you've got drm master you can access any buffer and if you don't have drm master you can't access any of master's buffers”. This is ok for the existing fast-user- switching method of spawning a new X server and then VT switching, as the old server drops master and the new server becomes the drm master. Actually, the above is a lie: currently the DRM permission model is ‘if you're authenticated you can access any buffer any client has shared’, and X proxies drm auth for all clients. VT switching drops master, but dropping master does not drop authentication, so this does not prevent inactive users from snooping on shared buffers. For the system compositor this is a bit worse, as the root window of the user sessions will be shared buffers. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1025525 Title: DRM buffer permission model is inadequate To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1025525/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 484102] Re: Grub2 doesn't chainload truecrypt loader correctly
That's not true. I have Grub legacy in my MBR. If I want to boot windows, Grub is loading an image of the Truecrypt Boot Loader from /boot. It is working in that configuration, the only problem is that Grub legacy is able to do that, Grub 2 is not, due to that bug.
