The entire error is a red herring, I now think.

A cron job was running that started an "apt-get upgrade" while the dist-
upgrade was running. Ouch.

Edited the .postinst file that subsequently crashed, stopped
cron, did a dist-upgrade, then removed and reinstalled the package in
question. Everything works fine. This is the first distribution in years
that handles suspend/resume robustly on my laptop - many thanks to
whoever fixed the kernel.

Perhaps do-release-upgrade should suspend cron processing while upgrading?
If that is the intention, then it didn't work.

I will add the files if you still think it useful.

Sounds like we're making progress. Dropping the regression part, since
that's now fixed. For the corrupted VGA issue, we're working on fixes
for fdi/pch handling, so maybe that will be resolved soon. For eDP iself
we're likely still missing some fixes somewhere, but it's rather awesome
that you can kick it into working order with some vt switching!

I just tested  latest testing branch.
There are some interesting changes:
- back light on eDP is now on.
- eDP is recognised but stays blank
- if i press Fn+F8 to change display, i get corrupt display on VGA. Then, after 
second press, both eDP and VGA work!!!

My error was similar. After installing or updating any package, among
others, this error was included.

Setting up ruby1.8 (1.8.7.352-2ubuntu1.1) ...
update-alternatives: error: alternative rdoc can't be slave of ruby: it is a 
master alternative.
dpkg: error processing ruby1.8 (--configure):

sudo update-alternatives --remove rdoc /usr/bin/rdoc
sudo update-alternatives --remove rdoc /usr/bin/rdoc1.8
sudo update-alternatives --remove rdoc /usr/bin/rdoc1.9.2

solved this problem. I used all three commands because all three
directories existed.

No errors to report during `apt-get update` and `apt-get upgrade` or installing 
or upgrading any package.

release.

www.hplip.net site.

Your bug is the same bug as Debian bug #282068.  For information on when
the fix will be released, and a workaround you can use for now, please
see .  Note that the "latrace" tool
mentioned there has been in Ubuntu since Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot).
But only in the "universe" repository.

Running the SMART tests from the system BIOS directly (not loading
Ubuntu) it appears to be failing all the tests.  It appears to be a
hardware problem.  Strange that it only started acting up now.

Can you please specify *what* is broken.

I am the one responsible for these packages. I package them in Debian,
from where they are pulled into Ubuntu.

I myself used for long time TL2009, up to this years March when I
started packaging 2012.

I am writing a lot of LaTeX for my work.

So tell me, besides "it is not the newest released version", what
is broken?

And if you have sooo much interest, you could have helped packaging
TeX Live already in the last 3 years?!

Insulting here developers who do this work in the free time,
voluntarily, is not proper behaviour. I don't know where you are
from, but where I am living, in Japan, this is called very very
inpolite behaviour, and people feel ashamed for it.

[Bug 1073039] [NEW] Ubuntu dash goes only pop-under

How I got to this situation: I decided to switch from a properly
installed nvidia propertary driver to nouveau for testing purposes. I
opened software sources, opened tab Additional Drivers, chose Using
X.Org X Server and restarted.

Now every window is over ubuntu dash if visible.

If I install nvidia propertary driver in similar way, the problem
disappears.

I am not sure if this problem is about unity or about software sources
-- it seems to me that I am still running a sort of nvidia-propertary
driver although I wanted to use nouveau.

Does TeX Live 2012 has any known breakage over TeX Live 2009, I'm very glad to 
learn about it.
Because AFAIK TeX stuff has much higher quality than many stuff developed in

For your Unity example, anyone want the "fun" of Xorg 1.13? Any
evidence?

For TeX Live upgrading, there was heat 1274 bug for 11.04/11.10/12.04; very 
concrete evidence.

[Bug 1073029] [NEW] dv1550se: upower never registers lid-open event though ACPI does

I can check the reported state of my laptop lid's status (open or closed) via 
two methods:
  1) cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state
  2) upower --dump

Whether the lid is closed or open is not always reported identically
between these two methods.  On my laptop, after closing and opening the
lid, "upower --dump" will report the lid as closed, while
"/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state" correctly says the lid is open.

Using acpi_listen, my laptop generates lid events when the lid closes,
but not when it opens. I compared this to another laptop and the second
laptop generates laptop lid events both when opening and closing the
lid.

I was asked to re-file this bug against the linux kernel instead of
upower, as I originally did, and link the original bug here.  So, here
is the original bug report with more information: Bug #561656

I believe your VirtualBox problem is because the VirtualBox guest
drivers didn't support Xorg 1.13 until version 4.2.2 which was released
after Ubuntu 12.10 was released. Also, Unity 2D has been dropped since
nobody stepped up to keep it working and Canonical is focusing on Unity.

I do care about this bug as shown by the many hours of work I put into
backporting TexLive 2012 to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and the time I've taken to
explain. But that doesn't change the fact that this wishlist bug is
*impossible* to fix.

I am annoyed specifically because you seemed to not care about why we
have the policies we have. I mean you'd be pretty upset if the Ubuntu
developers brought the fun of Xorg 1.13 and dropping Unity 2D to Ubuntu
12.04 LTS, right? Trying to bring Tex Live 2012 to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS has
a similar risk (although possibly not quite as severe).

I've installed smartmontools and have run two short tests and am running
a long test now.  The SMART log knows of the recent problems but the
tests are not discovering any problems. The problems recorded in the
SMART log are "READ DMA" commands.  Is there anything in particular I
should be looking for?

ignore the error however if I start the MythTV frontend the error

Well, there are users complaining about outdated state of TeX Live 2009
since 11.04 and probably even earlier.

No one says explicitly that we have to have TeX Live 2012 on 12.04.
TeX Live 2011 may also be much better than TeX Live 2009.

You don't have to care about this bug.
You can show some technical difficulty here and leave.

The only thing annoyed me here is that you don't even acknowledge the broken 
state and do something non-constructive:
1. Mark this bug as WONTFIX
2. Suggest upgrading. New versions do have goodies but there are also plenty of 
examples show that some new bugs introduced by new non-LTS versions may never 
get chance to fix in the whole life cycle. Don't put people in dilemma, respect 
what they are currently using.
Maybe I'm too stupid, but 12.10 runs extremely slow inside my VirtualBox and I 
cannot do any non-trivial work on 12.10.
