[Bug 1088454] Re: linux-generic-lts-quantal is missing linux-tools

2012-12-10 Thread H.-Dirk Schmitt
The bug described an missing dependency / missing package.
It is not an defect of the software correlated to the system.

So skip the last 20-21 comments as policy enforced bloated ballast ;-)

Re: [Bug 1088026] Re: Google online account no access granted

2012-12-10 Thread BertN45
Hi David

Forget about what is working. Please concentrate on what is NOT working.
I can't use the online accounts from Google.

On 10/12/12 06:47, David King wrote:
Hi Bert, this behaviour is expected, as Thunderbird and the browser do
not use the Ubuntu Online Accounts credentials, such as your Google
account. The projects that currently use the Google account credentials
from UOA are Empathy, the Google Drive scope for the Files lens and
 Gwibber.

[Bug 1077782] Re: oneconf python scripts need Python version-specific shebang

2012-12-10 Thread Barry Warsaw
Actually, I recommend against making /usr/bin/python be Python 3, but
aside from that, now that the Python 3 port has landed in trunk, all
shebang lines should now usr /usr/bin/python3, so I'll mark this as fix
committed.

[Bug 1005946] Re: Docky 2.2 terminates with updates of any kind

2012-12-10 Thread bwat47
ok, I hope this is helpful. I recently switched to xubuntu, and am
getting the same crash there but now it seems to pop up with apport. I
managed to reproduce it twice by instaling a few packages from synaptic,
and I used the apport examine locally button to get a retrace:

2012-12-10 Thread Barry Warsaw
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1088533] [NEW] Launcher autohide mode - Application window location depends on whether the launcher is visible or not at setup

2012-12-10 Thread Bowmore
Public bug reported:

When lauching an application from the launcher (autohide mode) its
window location will depend om whether the launcher itself is visible or
not at the time of setup.

Test case:
1) configure launcher autohide mode
2) launch an application from the launcher
3) keep the launcher visible during the application window setup

Result:
The application window is aligned to the launcher's top/righthand side, i.e
where the window would have been setup using the never hide mode.

Expected result
The application window should be aligned to the screen's (icon workarea)
top/lefthand side.

[Bug 1088532] [NEW] pluging in a missing raid member does not (re)add it to array

2012-12-10 Thread ceg
Public bug reported:

12.04.1 regression (worked before, maybe without the mentioned safety
check, but it worked)

(re-add refers to speeding up the sync using a bitmap)

The --incremental (udev) call refuses to (re)add a temporarily
diconnected member back to an already restarted (active) raid. (Even
thought the event count clearly shows its state is equal or older than
at the time the array was started (run) degraded.)

And manually:

# mdadm /dev/md2 --re-add /dev/sda6
mdadm: --re-add for /dev/sda6 to /dev/md2 is not possible

# mdadm /dev/md2 --add /dev/sda6
mdadm: /dev/sda6 reports being an active member for /dev/md2, but a --re-add
fails.
mdadm: not performing --add as that would convert /dev/sda6 in to a spare.
mdadm: To make this a spare, use mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sda6 first.

This is not how things are supposed to work in times of hotpluging.

A warning/question if the device that is to be added contains newer data
than at its time of failure is appropriate, but otherwise, get the job
of adding that device back to its raid done!

[Bug 1087669] Re: Audio Call fails due to linking both gstreamer 0.10 and 1.0

2012-12-10 Thread Iain Lane
Yeah, empathy can't move to 1.0 just yet because that would require
taking new versions of the farstream stack, which has knock-on effects
(a telepathy-farstream transition) that break some other (mainly KDE)
packages.

We should wait some time to get Kubuntu a chance to port their stuff.

In the meantime if you don't need to use any of that stuff then you can
give empathy from ppa:ubuntu-desktop/gstreamer1.0 a try.

[Bug 926763] Re: Cannot install local packages (.deb files) without network connection (offline)

2012-12-10 Thread Marius Kotsbak
The implementation should warn the user if the installation of the deb
file requires dependencies to be downloaded (i.e. all dependencies
should be installed).

Ideally the user should be able to select several deb files at once to
be installed that together satisfies all dependencies.

Couldn't we just set this feature to be disabled by default that could

This bug's solution is the cause of this unanswerable question:

I have noticed that RB remembers whether it was minimised to tray when
it closed, and starts in the same state. Some users might find that
confusing, however. My mother does actually, sometimes she opens RB to
listen to her music and she doesn't realise that small white square on
the notification area, so she thinks the program didn't start
  properly.

I think RB should NEVER start minimised to tray, unless it's specified
  through a command option.

[Bug 993298] Re: Please make NetworkManager-controlled dnsmasq respect /etc/hosts

2012-12-10 Thread Gary Edwards
I just did a fresh install on 2 laptops that were working fine with
version 12.04. Both laptops have this issue with version 12.10. I've
tried commenting out dns=dnsmasq in
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and creating a wrapper script
for dnsmasq that removes the --no-hosts option. Neither of these
suggestions worked and the wrapper script caused the system startup to
hang.

I've read comments that the dnsmasq functionality has been part of
Network Manager since version 12.04; however, I didn't see this problem
on 12.04. It seems that something changed with 12.10 to manifest it.
I'm surprised that I haven't seen more reports of it. It also seems odd
that some are reporting that the work arounds worked and others are not
reporting the problem at all.

I agree with another poster that this bug should be marked critical.
It's very annoying that such a basic and critical OS functionality was
broken and the bug is only marked as Opinion and remains unassigned. I
held off on installing 12.10 to allow time for bug fixes but, sadly, I
didn't wait long enough.

Sorry but the decision still doesn't make any sense to me.
I have to change the default permissions on every installation which is
 indeed *not* usability friendly.

Besides that the public-dir would be perfect for this (wouldn't it be
possible to symlink public to a directory outside of users home and so leave
it accessible for everyone?): I never ever intenionally shared files between
 home-dirs.
Addionally I have to add that I even talked with many colleagues and friends
for this feature and (surprise surprise) they also don't use this feature.

But many people doesn't know that a default ubuntu-installation behaves like
this. And this is the real danger.
If you want a proof you can find many more people in the web who where
negative surprised (besides the ones in this bug-ticket).
Wether in ubuntu forums, askubuntu.com, blogs or here on launchpad: obviously
 no one is expecting that.

And even IF Colin Watson amazingly really have more cases with public
read access than private access then it should be at least decidable by
the user (as mentioned by himself in #8). And I don't mean by
/etc/adduser.conf but in the GUI (ie an checkbox in usermanagement
wether the home-dir should be readable and/or a checkbox on the
 installer).

Furthermore like David Henningsson already said: if you have even a
public dir wouldn't it be intuitive to expect that the other directories
 and files aren't public?

I totally agree with aysiu what the defaults should like and I also
think like flaccid that even IF somewant WANTS to share his home-dir it
is the worst idea to share files. There are thousands of possibilities
but sharing the whole home directory should be the default?

Marc Deslauriers even if every tool which stores the permissions
correct: as long as the user doesn't knows that his files are visible it
is still an terrible issue - isn't it? If the user manages his files
which leads to unintentinally public data there is definitely a need to
 improve something.

It was a phantastic step to offer simple solutions for encrypting the whole
disk, home- or private-dir. But even if I have a fresh installation with an
encrypted disk and I prohibited booting from usb or networking there could be
 a case like this:
I am booting the system (type the passphrase) and leaving the room for a
moment than someone could login to the (default-activated?) guest login and
steal my data. In this case the attacker needs nearly nothing for getting
 everything.
And even in smaller circles when family members share accounts on one
computer they mostly expect their home dir is their little home - including a
 little amount of privacy.

And to complete the analogy in real life. See the home-dir like a real
home with your own room. Inner-flat doors are often lockable even if you
know that these locks give just a low-level-security.

For a project which claims to listen to their customers: with all due
respect but nobody seems to really listen here (or on ubuntu forums,
askubuntu, …) while they are good reasons mentioned for a meaningful
 revision.

So Mark Shuttleworth: No facts or circumstances changed, because there
are still many people who think that the default is wrong, but is that
 really not a reason enough?

Or make a poll and ask them at least.

I reproduced again. There is a different stack trace, but it's still
triggered from avahi calling into dbus_watch_handle.

[Bug 1088547] [NEW] External display is black after hot plug switching to it on Macbook Air 4, 2

2012-12-10 Thread Andrew Sinclair
Public bug reported:

I have a Macbook Air 4,2 which I use with an Apple Cinema display. In a
dual display set-up, everything works as expected. If I disable the
laptop display, the external display continues to work (expected
behavior). If I then unplug the external display, the laptop display is
automatically re-enabled and works as expected. The problem is, if I
then plug the external display back in, both displays go black. I
expect the laptop display to go black (disabled), because that was the
last setting. However, I do not expect the external monitor to be
black.

In this state, if I reboot without the external display plugged in, the
laptop display turns on and works as expected. However, if I then plug
in the external display, both displays go black. If I re-boot and have
the external display plugged in, I see the welcome screen but after
logging in, the laptop display is black and the external display is
blank, but with a blue hue.

To recreate:
 1. Install Ubuntu on a Macbook Air 4,2
 2. Plug in an external monitor
 3. In the display settings, enable the external monitor, and disable the
laptop monitor
 4. Unplug the external display
 5. Plug the external display back in

I have had this problem with the last few Ubuntu releases. Prior to
that, there were more serious problems with dual displays so I did not
test for this problem.

I am not certain this is an xorg bug, that is just where the bug
reporting questionnaire pointed me.

[Bug 1088540] Re: ec2-bundle-image gives error 'can't convert Fixnum into String'

2012-12-10 Thread Scott Moser
This seems to be a change from ruby 1.8 to 1.9, that caused 'gen_ident' to be
valid.
basically, before it had:
##
# generate a unique identifier used for filenames
#
def gen_ident()
  (0..19).inject() {|ident, n| ident+(?A + Kernel.rand(26)).chr}
end

That needs updating to:
   (0..19).inject() {|ident, n| ident+(?A.ord + Kernel.rand(26)).chr}

This may have been fixed in an update. I found an old 11.10 server
which '# ifconfig -a', displays properly, and I have also verified
proper function on Quantal 12.10.

[Bug 1084106] Re: highbank installer broken

2012-12-10 Thread Robie Basak
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ It is possible to install neither highbank nor armadaxp on Quantal. This
+ is a regression in Quantal, since this worked at release.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Run the installer using the instructions at
+ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/Server/Install, except use 12.10 images
+ instead of 12.04.

+ If successful, the installation should succeed. If this bug still

+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ This change affects flash-kernel-installer only, so can only affect d-i.
+ d-i is completely broken for both highbank and armadaxp, so I don't see
+ how it could get worse for these machines. For other machines, a
+ regression would manifest itself as an installer failure only. We have
+ verified that the new linux-version call works as expected in Quantal
+ using network-console, so think that this is unlikely.
+
+ Original description:

[Bug 1079185] Re: Wrong bootarg for disk with label

2012-12-10 Thread Robie Basak
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ Installation fails on a Pandaboard on Quantal for users who previously
+ had a volume label on an existing partition.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Create and label an existing partition (eg. using e2label). Then run the
+ installer. On first reboot, if the bug still exists, the system will
+ fail to mount the root filesystem.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ We're changing calls to blkid only by being specific that we want the
+ UUID instead of assuming that the UUID is on the first line. This has
+ been tested in d-i on Quantal. I can only see this regression if blkid
+ doesn't work as expected in this specific mode in some obscure case that
+ we haven't considered.
+
+ [Original Description]
+
I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a pandaboard.

At the installation, I selected an empty partition named ubuntu2 et
  checked the box for formating.

After the installation process, at the first boot, rootfs couldn't be
mounted : the bootarg was root=UUID=ubuntu2

So I changed the preEnv.txt on my computer to root=LABEL=ubuntu2 but
sill couldn't boot, as the label was erased during format process.

I fixed it thanks to busybox by putting back label ubuntu2 to my
  /dev/sda2 partition.

/usr/share/app-install/desktop/scribus:scribus.desktop
~/local/share/applications/scribus.desktop`. I selected the executable
tick mark and now Scribus is launching properly.

[Bug 1088555] [NEW] Xerox Workcentre 7232 default recommended ppd is incorrect - most of these printers understand only PCL

2012-12-10 Thread Giedrius Vaivilavičius
Public bug reported:

I have Xerox Workcentre 7232 and this printer doesn't work with default
recommended Ubuntu driver - Xerox WorkCentre 7232 Foomatic/Postscript
[en] - printer prints Postcript source instead of printer test page:

%!PS-Adobe-3.0
   %Produced by poppler pdftops version: 0.18.1 (http://poppler.fre

This is because standart Xerox Workcentre 7232 printer doesn't
understand Postscript - additional Postscript Kit should be purchased
for Postscript printing language support.

All Workcentre 7232 printers works fine with Xerox WorkCentre 7345
Foomatic/pxlcolor driver, just one boolead option Banner Sheet is
missing in this driver.

Please make Xerox WorkCentre 7345 Foomatic/pxlcolor driver as
recommended driver for Workcentre 7232 and make Xerox WorkCentre 7232
Foomatic/Postscript [en] as additional driver.

There is a bunch of other iwlwifi messages right after this trace which
are in the attached log extract. Recently (maybe since kernel 3.2.0-34)
I noticed frequent Wifi drop outs that are manifesting like this in the
logs:

[Bug 995330] Re: [Upstream] Libreoffice has no border on menus (KDE)

2012-12-10 Thread Steven Depp
I also have this problem. I think I found an easy work-around. Just
uninstall libreoffice-kde (purge it), and install libreoffice-gtk
instead. Well, I said I *thought* I found a work-around since I tried to
fix the problem in many different ways and when, after reinstalling
from the Muon Software Center (Using Kubuntu 12.10) instead of the
command line, I checked libreoffice and all was fine, nice look and all,
menus working great. I noticed that libreoffice-kde was not installed,
whereas libreoffice-gtk was.

I don't have a spare computer just to check it, and I don't want it
broken again, so maybe someone can try that and tell us if that's an ok
work-around.
