Sorry about the long delay. I have just worked through the explanation
in comment #17 and can confirm that I see the same (desirable) behaviour
on a reasonably standard ubuntu 12.10 system. I agree that the original
bind9 problem is no longer relevant.

Thanks,

Re: [Bug 604283] Re: Certain services do not listen on 127.0.1.1

2012-12-27 Thread Brian Burch
On 17/12/12 14:38, Thomas Hood wrote:
@Brian Burch: What is your opinion now about this report, insofar as it
 affects ntp?

 ** Summary changed:

 - Certain services do not listen on 127.0.1.1
+ ntpd does not listen on 127.0.1.1, the IP address associated with the
 system hostname

I did a quick check on a 12.10 ubuntu system and it superficially looks
as if the problem is still valid.

ntpd is listening on 127.0.0.1:123 and 0.0.0.0:123 (among others)

ntpq -p works OK.
ntpq -p localhost works OK.
ntpq -p myhostname fails with timeout, nothing received.

/etc/hosts has localhost defined 127.0.0.1 and myhostname defined as
127.0.1.1. Both of these hostnames can be pinged successfully, as you
would expect.

I don't want to be pedantic, because this bug doesn't affect me. It
simply leads to illogical behaviour from ntpd. If there was a way to
close it with a status nobody cares, I wouldn't complain. On the other
hand, invalid doesn't feel right. What about wontfix?

part of the logs while it is turning off and on.
While this is happening the Wifi light flashes on and off. The quickest way
to recover is to manually turn on the wifi card.

[Bug 1082339] Re: The brightness control and the keyboard do not change the screen that is always on full brightness.

2012-12-27 Thread Arthur Geeson
I removed the upstream version a while ago using the web sight you
advised as the machine was starting up automatically on the latest
version of Ubuntu but the wireless connection was not working. The
brightness control is still working from the keyboard and from system
settings. The only annoying thing now is that it does not remember the
brightness setting after shut down and always starts on full brightness.

[Bug 1093850] [NEW] VLC plays choppy audio without proprietary ATI drivers

2012-12-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm using a PC with a Phenom II X4 965 CPU and an ATI Radeon HD 5750
GPU.

if I don't have the proprietary ATI drivers installed, VLC player, by
default, plays choppy and broken audio on any video file.

It is easy to fix this, as you only need to change the Audio output
module under preferences - audio from 'default' to 'ALSA' and then
under device select 'Analog Front Speakers'.

This should however be working right out of the box.

[Bug 969343] Re: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless

2012-12-27 Thread Felix Haller
I wonder this isn't fixed yet. There are many users waitin for a fix,
especially students and profs, because many of them are using the
eduroam network (mentioned some times before).

When using eduroam wifi after a while my notebook stops working like
expected: I'm unable to suspend (kernel panic) and the network
connection is getting slower and slower till it stops working. The whole
system crashes, so it's very dangerous to connect to such a network.

I attached a config screenshotmaybe it helps...

Re: [Bug 1052944] Re: System bell ignoring preferences

2012-12-27 Thread Gerfried Fuchs
* dotancohen 1052...@bugs.launchpad.net [2012-12-26 19:58:44 CET]:
Thank you Gerfried. It was not me who assigned the bug to the 'beep'
package. To which package should the bug be assigned in your opinion?

The bug report seems to be flawed. As I explained, the beep tool has
nothing to do with the xset settings, so it can't be influenced by that.
I'm unsure whether the bugreport is actually in general valid, no matter
which package you might want to assign it to. :)

 Enjoy,

[Bug 1093740] Re: calibre-bin: spelling error in description

2012-12-27 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

When I spotted this report, I was confused at first because I believed
this typo had already been fixed (see bug 706221 for details). Upon
closer inspection, I see that it was fixed for the calibre package, but
not calibre-bin and is still present in Ubuntu 12.10
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calibre/0.8.51+dfsg-1ubuntu5).
However, it seems to have been fixed properly in the latest development
version of Ubuntu - Raring Ringtail
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calibre/0.9.0+dfsg-1), thus I am
marking this Fix Released.

[Bug 1093973] Re: schroot overwrites files in guest system without announcement or backup

2012-12-27 Thread gouri
** Description changed:

  # Short report

  * chroot does not modify target, schroot expected to do the same, or at least
warn users in documentation
  * expected behavior: do not overwrite important config files (like
/etc/passwd)
- * observed behavior: overwrite important config files (like /etc/passwd)
without any backup (9 files overwritten in recommended setup, several),
run-time warning or documentation
+ * observed behavior: overwrite important config files (9 files overwritten in
recommended setup, including /etc/passwd, shadow, group) without any backup,
run-time warning or documentation
  * older releases of schroot (that did not include destructive setup scripts)
did not have this behavior

Long report below, with suggestions for fixes.

  # Introduction, or where expectations come from

schroot fills some gaps left by plain chroot and that makes it a valuable
tool. schroot makes two things easier:
  * easily provide environment that plain chroot command does not provide
(mainly mount points, network config, but also kernel personalities)
  * allow regular users to use the chrooted environment

  Example uses of chroot:
  * building another system that will live on its own later on (you need /proc
/sys etc but don't want to replicate host configuration). Guest system may be
different distribution, newer version of current distribution, will have
different services, sets of users, etc.
  * rescuing another, independent, system (you need /proc /sys etc but don't
want to replicate host configuration).
  * slave subsystems (compatible kernel, different libraries) as extension of
the host system (with same set of users etc).

chroot is not limited to the third case, but scripts in current schroot
seem to narrow schroot, which would otherwise be highly useful for all
  cases above.

In any case, no one likes a tool overwriting important system
configuration without even a word of warning in the documentation.

  # Steps to reproduce

  * read man schroot and man schroot.conf
  * observe that man schroot.conf recommends type=directory, mentions setup
scripts without warning that these scripts overwrite without backup. As a
consequence, expect setup script to mean e.g. a script running mount but not
changing any file inside chroot.
  * observe that man schroot.conf explains script-config= as per-chroot
customization without ever mentioning that they actually overwrite guest system
configuration with copy from host, which may not always be what the user wants.
  * create a simple config for a guest system (e.g. for rescue) with default,
since it's recommended
  * expect it to mount your environment plus /proc /sys but not destroy data.
  * run

  # Observed behavior

In guest's etc, files resolv.conf, gshadow, passwd, shadow, group,
services, protocols, networks and hosts have been irreversibly
overwritten with irrelevant copies from host. (Such behavior is
relevant in some use case of chroots, but not all.)

  # Expected behavior

Do not delete user data unless the user clearly wants that.

Any behavior that risks loss of data:
  * either does not happen in default behavior or recommended setup
  * or causes a warning and pause in program run (with option to avoid)
  * or at least is clearly documented as such so that a user configuring the
program will see the warning in associated documentation

  # Suggested fixes

  ## Change the man page so that danger is documented

Following sections seem relevant in man schroot.conf.

  ### type=type

  Suggested changes.

  Before:

Note that ‘plain’ chroots do not run setup scripts and mount
filesystems; ‘directory’ is recommended for normal use (see “Plain and
  directory chroots”, below).

  After:

Note that ‘plain’ chroots do not run setup scripts and mount
filesystems; ‘directory’ is recommended for normal use (see “Plain and
directory chroots”, below) but you should be warned that default setup
  scripts overwrite files in chroot.

  ### script-config=filename

  Suggested changes.

  Before:

The two types are equivalent except for the fact that
directory chroots run setup scripts, whereas plain chroots do not.
In consequence, filesystems such as /proc are not mounted in plain chroots;
it is the responsibility of the system administrator to configure
such chroots by hand, whereas directory chroots are automatically configured.

[Bug 704401] Re: Optical sound output breaks on upgrade to linux-image-2.6.35-25-generic

2012-12-27 Thread Ralf Engels
I have an Acer Aspire 8920 laptop and the same problem.
On quantal.
So obviously the bugfix in comment 35 did not solve the problem.
Also adding the 6stack-dig option does not help me.

[Bug 1064924] Re: Please add LVDS quirk for the zotac zbox

2012-12-27 Thread Sjoerd Simons
While the Zotac does have such an LVDI to HDMI bridge i've never seen it
working on any of my boxes and they're in general not properly supported
in linux (No real hotplug detection etc).

Which zotac model do you have for which this works and can you add the
output from DMI decode?

[Bug 1093997] Re: dolphin does not display previews for RAW image files

2012-12-27 Thread Frédéric CORNU
Here is a screen capture showing that :

- Preview display is on
- Dolphin is set to display previews for local digital camera RAW files with
size 1024MB ( I know that's large)
- in icon mouse hover, tooltip shows thumbnail which has been created in
${HOME}/.thumbnails
- Preview is empty (default balloon image)

[Bug 377483] Re: DVD PATA-SATA bridge (SPiF223A) doesn't work...

2012-12-27 Thread Pascal Deloof
Trying to connect a 2nd hdd with this PATA-SATA bridge (SPiF223A). Hdd can be
mounted and unmounted. All tests/bench on this hdd work. System recognizes disk
and smart says it's ok. But when trying to read /write data from/to it system
freezes completely within 10 seconds. No problem with same configuration under
windows XP.
Reopened this isue because looks the same problem; Ubuntu 10.04 Kernel
2.6.32-45-generic.

[Bug 723167] Re: Panel does not use standard GTK/Pango font rendering/antialiasing, causing fuzzy fonts

2012-12-27 Thread Adolfo Jayme Barrientos
Ugly as hell. This is a clear bug that does not need ayatana design
advice. I think the desired fix for this is obvious.

[Bug 1094003] [NEW] No input for Texas Instruments PCM2900C

2012-12-27 Thread Florian Märkl
Public bug reported:

I have a turntable with a built in audio interface. It shows up in lsusb as:

Both the input and the output are shown in the audio settings of
gnome-control-center, but when I try to select the input, it just segfaults.
alsamixer says there is no input at all.

[Bug 606238] Re: synaptic touchpad not recognized on dell latitude e6510 and others

2012-12-27 Thread David J
@dturvene

Thanks for taking the time to walk me through this. The DSDT entry for
my touchpad is DLL0584, and now that I know what to look for I can see
it all over the place:

/var/log/dmesg:[0.312892] pnp 00:0b: Plug and Play ACPI device, IDs DLL0584
PNP0f13 (active)
/var/log/udev:KERNEL[1.827693] add

Mem @ 0xf780/4194304, 0xe000/268435456, I/O @ 0xf000/64

I have added a new line to alps_model_data in alps.c, making up the
values I didn't know or copying them from the other V5 entry:

136a137,138
   /* Dell Latitude 6430u */
   { { 0x88, 0x08, 0x22 }, 0x22, ALPS_PROTO_V5, 0x8f, 0x8f, ALPS_DUALPOINT
 },

The touchpad is now recognized by the kernel as an Alps Dualpoint:

$ tail /var/log/syslog

⎜ ↳ DualPoint Stick id=14 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad id=16 [slave pointer (2)]

I can now change the touchpad settings via synclient / tpconfig / gnome
control center. Vertical and horizontal edge scrolling work, and also
disabling the touchpad while typing. 2 finger and 3 finger tapping also
work, I haven't tested other multitouch gestures. If there's something
else I can test/try that will help improve this driver just let me know,
I'll keep an eye on this bug in case it's needed in the future.

Thanks again Dave and others for your efforts and your help with this
issue.

[Bug 1094008] [NEW] Computer Icon not Visible on Desktop after Update

2012-12-27 Thread riderplus
Public bug reported:

I made some updates to Ubuntu 12.10 and now the Computer icon is no
longer visible on Desktop. There is no way of putting it back, I tried
with dconf-editor, gconf-editor, gnome-tweak-tool and none of them has
the option of making the icon visible. I also tried the command
gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.desktop computer-icon-visible true
which gave me No such key 'computer-icon-visible'. Also, the right
click menu does no longer have Create new document as option (only New
Folder). How to fix these?

[Bug 377483] Re: DVD PATA-SATA bridge (SPiF223A) doesn't work...

2012-12-27 Thread Pascal Deloof
update on previous comment: now trying to mount this disk (still using
the SPiF223A bridge) freezes the system. Needs a hard reset! (Tried W-XP
again and all works fine.) Disk utilities still shows the hdd as
/dev/sdb1 with name, serial nr, capacity... but trying to mount this
disk freezes the system. The same disk (Seagate SATA) works fine over a
usb-bridge as external disk. The problem has to be the use of the PATA-
SATA bridge SPiF223A (SUNPLUS IT, SATALINK, SPIF223A-HL022). This bridge
is built in a 2nd HDD-caddy which comes in place of the DVD-drive.
