On 17/12/12 14:38, Thomas Hood wrote: @Brian Burch: What is your opinion now about this report, insofar as it affects ntp? ** Summary changed: - Certain services do not listen on 127.0.1.1 + ntpd does not listen on 127.0.1.1, the IP address associated with the system hostname I did a quick check on a 12.10 ubuntu system and it superficially looks as if the problem is still valid. ntpd is listening on 127.0.0.1:123 and 0.0.0.0:123 (among others) ntpq -p works OK. ntpq -p localhost works OK. ntpq -p myhostname fails with timeout, nothing received. /etc/hosts has localhost defined 127.0.0.1 and myhostname defined as 127.0.1.1. Both of these hostnames can be pinged successfully, as you would expect. I don't want to be pedantic, because this bug doesn't affect me. It simply leads to illogical behaviour from ntpd. If there was a way to close it with a status nobody cares, I wouldn't complain. On the other hand, invalid doesn't feel right. What about wontfix? [Bug 1082339] Re: The brightness control and the keyboard do not change the screen that is always on full brightness.
I removed the upstream version a while ago using the web sight you advised as the machine was starting up automatically on the latest version of Ubuntu but the wireless connection was not working. The brightness control is still working from the keyboard and from system settings. The only annoying thing now is that it does not remember the brightness setting after shut down and always starts on full brightness. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1082339 Title: The brightness control and the keyboard do not change the screen that is always on full brightness. [Bug 1093850] [NEW] VLC plays choppy audio without proprietary ATI drivers
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I'm using a PC with a Phenom II X4 965 CPU and an ATI Radeon HD 5750 GPU. if I don't have the proprietary ATI drivers installed, VLC player, by default, plays choppy and broken audio on any video file. It is easy to fix this, as you only need to change the Audio output module under preferences - audio from 'default' to 'ALSA' and then under device select 'Analog Front Speakers'. This should however be working right out of the box. [Bug 1093740] Re: calibre-bin: spelling error in description
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. When I spotted this report, I was confused at first because I believed this typo had already been fixed (see bug 706221 for details). Upon closer inspection, I see that it was fixed for the calibre package, but not calibre-bin and is still present in Ubuntu 12.10 (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calibre/0.8.51+dfsg-1ubuntu5). However, it seems to have been fixed properly in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Raring Ringtail (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calibre/0.9.0+dfsg-1), thus I am marking this Fix Released. ** Changed in: calibre (Ubuntu) Status: New = Fix Released ** Changed in: ubuntu-translations Status: New = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1093740 Title: calibre-bin: spelling error in description To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-translations/+bug/1093740/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1093973] Re: schroot overwrites files in guest system without announcement or backup
** Description changed: # Short report * chroot does not modify target, schroot expected to do the same, or at least warn users in documentation * expected behavior: do not overwrite important config files (like /etc/passwd) - * observed behavior: overwrite important config files (like /etc/passwd) without any backup (9 files overwritten in recommended setup, several), run-time warning or documentation + * observed behavior: overwrite important config files (9 files overwritten in recommended setup, including /etc/passwd, shadow, group) without any backup, run-time warning or documentation * older releases of schroot (that did not include destructive setup scripts) did not have this behavior Long report below, with suggestions for fixes. # Introduction, or where expectations come from schroot fills some gaps left by plain chroot and that makes it a valuable tool. schroot makes two things easier: * easily provide environment that plain chroot command does not provide (mainly mount points, network config, but also kernel personalities) * allow regular users to use the chrooted environment Example uses of chroot: * building another system that will live on its own later on (you need /proc /sys etc but don't want to replicate host configuration). Guest system may be different distribution, newer version of current distribution, will have different services, sets of users, etc. * rescuing another, independent, system (you need /proc /sys etc but don't want to replicate host configuration). * slave subsystems (compatible kernel, different libraries) as extension of the host system (with same set of users etc). chroot is not limited to the third case, but scripts in current schroot seem to narrow schroot, which would otherwise be highly useful for all cases above. In any case, no one likes a tool overwriting important system configuration without even a word of warning in the documentation. # Steps to reproduce * read man schroot and man schroot.conf * observe that man schroot.conf recommends type=directory, mentions setup scripts without warning that these scripts overwrite without backup. As a consequence, expect setup script to mean e.g. a script running mount but not changing any file inside chroot. * observe that man schroot.conf explains script-config= as per-chroot customization without ever mentioning that they actually overwrite guest system configuration with copy from host, which may not always be what the user wants. * create a simple config for a guest system (e.g. for rescue) with default, since it's recommended * expect it to mount your environment plus /proc /sys but not destroy data. * run # Observed behavior In guest's etc, files resolv.conf, gshadow, passwd, shadow, group, services, protocols, networks and hosts have been irreversibly overwritten with irrelevant copies from host. (Such behavior is relevant in some use case of chroots, but not all.) # Expected behavior Do not delete user data unless the user clearly wants that. Any behavior that risks loss of data: * either does not happen in default behavior or recommended setup * or causes a warning and pause in program run (with option to avoid) * or at least is clearly documented as such so that a user configuring the program will see the warning in associated documentation # Suggested fixes ## Change the man page so that danger is documented Following sections seem relevant in man schroot.conf. ### type=type Suggested changes. Before: Note that ‘plain’ chroots do not run setup scripts and mount filesystems; ‘directory’ is recommended for normal use (see “Plain and directory chroots”, below). After: Note that ‘plain’ chroots do not run setup scripts and mount filesystems; ‘directory’ is recommended for normal use (see “Plain and directory chroots”, below) but you should be warned that default setup scripts overwrite files in chroot. ### script-config=filename Suggested changes. Before: The two types are equivalent except for the fact that directory chroots run setup scripts, whereas plain chroots do not. In consequence, filesystems such as /proc are not mounted in plain chroots; it is the responsibility of the system administrator to configure such chroots by hand, whereas directory chroots are automatically configured. After: The two types are equivalent except for the fact that directory chroots run setup scripts, whereas plain chroots do not. In consequence, filesystems such as /proc are not mounted in plain chroots; it is the responsibility of the system administrator to configure such chroots
