Re: [Bug 1186463] Re: cannot boot ubuntu 13.04 on retina 10, 2 black screen

2013-07-28 Thread Phil Marsh
Hi Ike,
Thanks for responding. The problem apparently had resolved itself (or
rather was likely resolved due to efforts on the Ubuntu development team)
in that now, the bootup GUI is gone and I see text streaming by on boot up
and the boot is now sucessful every time. I'm guessing that the boot
graphics were the problem or related to it and the team chose to just
remove these bootup graphics. Apparently, that solved the problem - thanks
to them.
Thanks,
Phil

Please see below link. When pulling the menu down kwin crashes. Worked

[Bug 1205872] Re: firefox does not use system cairo

2013-07-28 Thread Chris Coulson
We intentionally use the bundled libraries for several reasons - the
main one being is that this is exactly the configuration that upstream
test and do all of their QA with. Changing something like Cairo exposes
us to a class of bugs that we have exactly no support with, so this is
not something we are going to be doing

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2013-07-28 Thread Andrei
1. This bug was fixed in compiz and Unity in 11.04 (two years ago now). The
left, right and bottom window borders now have a ten-pixel each-way grab area.
  How much pixels have the top and bottom?
  Was fixed and now it's the same?
  I've counted only 8, not 10 on left and right.
  How about the corners? Is there an image which shows the invisible border?

2. A similar grab area was added to the top border in 13.04
2 pixels top border grab area in
http://mirrors.melbourne.co.uk/ubuntu-releases//raring/ubuntu-13.04-desktop-amd64.iso
 , installed yesterday and also updated. The single difference from the
standard is a newer kernel, to fix a bug with video camera
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11-rc2-saucy/ . But then
again, this video/microphone bug was also fixed sometunes in 3.5, so it
shouldn't be back again.
Should I download another 13.04 Ubuntu version?

3. If no such grab area exists and you are running Unity 3D,
I should (re)open a ticket, but it's too freaking hard, because bug has been
solved. The same way as bug #1 probably. This is not one of a 100 paper cuts,
this is like smashing your hand with a hammer. Not being able to change the
background to a solid color is a paper cut. After using computers for the last
15 years almost every day, more than 8 hours a day, and coming again to Ubuntu
to see how it's doing, and being greeted by a crippled interface, it's
saddening. But not so much as the attitude of not seeing how broken the
usability is.

4. No such grab area exists in Unity 2D.
Not using 2D, as far as I know.

5. This bug is only fixed in Unity 3D.
  This bug was (probably) fixed in Unity 3D.

Can you tell me on what computer configuration runs the automated test
which measures this grab border?

Canonical should close all regression bugs, because they were once
fixed.

[Bug 1205995] [NEW] [MIR] indicator-keyboard

2013-07-28 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

1. Availability: The latest version was just uploaded now to Saucy
2. Rationale: Replaces the gnome-settings-daemon patch that converted the
keyboard status menu to an indicator. It should also incorporate features from
the ibus status menu.

3. Security: No known vulnerabilities
https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=indicator-keyboard
https://secunia.com/advisories/search/?search=indicator-keyboard
https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/indicator-keyboard

4. QA:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-keyboard
https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-keyboard
Tests were disabled since there's a few issues remaining but the tests are
being worked on and extended.

5. UI standards:
The indicator was built to follow this spec:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LanguageAndText

gnome-control-center has been patched to include some extra settings.
You can try it from ppa:ubuntu-desktop/ppa (It's not been uploaded to
Saucy yet because it depends on indicator-keyboard's schema which
obviously isn't in main yet.)

6. Dependencies: All in main
https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/saucy/indicator-keyboard/saucy/view/head:/debian/control

7. Standards Compliance: 3.9.4
8. Maintenance:
This should be maintained like all the other default indicators by
lp:~indicator-applet-developers

[Bug 1175475] Re: [HP Pavilion Slimline S5] fwts_test reports Critical /High falures for hibernation/suspend test

2013-07-28 Thread Ivan Hu
More detail information,
This is caused by the wmi driver(hp-wmi.c) brings the input data 160bits
struct bios_args {
u32 signature;
u32 command;
u32 commandtype;
u32 datasize;
u32 data; --- 4 bytes data
};
into the the acpi method HWMC as Arg1,
Method (HWMC, 2, NotSerialized)
{
CreateDWordField (Arg1, Zero, SGIN)
CreateDWordField (Arg1, 0x04, COMD)
CreateDWordField (Arg1, 0x08, CMDT)
CreateDWordField (Arg1, 0x0C, DSZI)
CreateByteField (Arg1, 0x10, D008)
CreateByteField (Arg1, 0x11, D009)
CreateByteField (Arg1, 0x12, D010)
CreateField (Arg1, 0x80, 0x0400, D128) --- 128 bytes
.
 }

the error occurred because the mismatch between the 4bytes "data" provided, but
the firmware 128 bytes "D128" used.
checking with the HP wmi spec, several wmi command type used input date 128
bytes (such as type 36h, Set Peak Shift Times, type 37h Set Battery Charging
Times). But this is not used by the hp-wmi.c. It is not reasonable to
CreateField for 128bytes at the method beginning, in stead, it should be
createfielded while it is used.
So I suggest the firmware should move the
CreateField (Arg1, 0x80, 0x0400, D128)
into the place that D128 is used, such as the type 36h, 37h.
If (LEqual (CMDT, 0x36))
{
move to here  CreateField (Arg1, 0x80, 0x0400, D128)
Store (\_SB.WMID.SPST (D128), Local2)
Store (Zero, RETC)
}

If (LEqual (CMDT, 0x37))
{
move to here --- CreateField (Arg1, 0x80, 0x0400, D128)
Store (\_SB.WMID.SBCT (D128), Local2)
Store (Zero, RETC)
}

but actually the D128 isn't really used by (type 36h, type 37h) and other type.
If (LEqual (CMDT, 0x36))
{
Store (\_SB.WMID.GPST (), Local2)
Store (Zero, RETC)
}

If (LEqual (CMDT, 0x37))
{
Store (\_SB.WMID.GBCT (), Local2)
Store (Zero, RETC)
}

So directly remove
CreateField (Arg1, 0x80, 0x0400, D128) in the firmware is suggested.

[Bug 1170463] Re: 0bda:817f AWUS036NHR / RTL8188RU doesn't connect

2013-07-28 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
David Baumann, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available
following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the
kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all
the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment
on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the
mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why
specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

2013-07-28 Thread Tim
Public bug reported:

We can now migrate the gjs/gnome-shell stack to use the new mozjs17.

Cinnamon is broken in Saucy since gjs 1.36 update, but attached patch allows to
build against gjs 1.37.
gnome-sushi will need a no change rebuild.

[Bug 1170771] Re: tg3: DEBUG: MAC_TX_STATUS[0000000e] MAC_RX_STATUS[00000007]

2013-07-28 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jaun Pablo Sanchez, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. Karmic reached EOL on April 30, 2011.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the
mainline kernels archive directory daily folder. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why
specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1171242] Re: Computer randomly crashes or shuts down.

2013-07-28 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Adennris, this bug report is being closed due to your last comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1171242/comments/14
regarding this being fixed via hardware replacement. For future
reference you can manage the status of your own bugs by clicking on the
current status in the yellow line and then choosing a new status in the
revealed drop down box. You can learn more about bug statuses at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status. Thank you again for taking the time
to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please submit any
future bugs you may find.

** Description changed:

  [I'm a software eng but not an ubuntu admin/expert]

  Over the last few weeks, the computer has crashed suddenly about 10 times by
jumping into console mode, displaying a stack-trace and not responding to
anything.
  See the few screen photos I have captured for 5 of those crashes:
https://plus.google.com/photos/105540241924141497089/albums/5866912783964877793?authkey=CJHamI7B1LH7NQ
  (Sorry for the low quality of some of the photos, 4 of them are easily
readable, I can try to post-process the 5th to make it more readable if needed)

  Also about another 10+ times, the computer has slowed down suddenly and
  incredibly for a few seconds (up to a minute) and then suddenly turned
  off by itself in an instant (not actually shutting down).

  This has been happening more often when being on G+ hangouts (video
  conference) or watching a video (amazon video) than while doing other
  operations but it has also happened while simply browsing the net on
  sites which do neither sound nor video.

  Note that I have dual-boot Win7 + Ubuntu 12.04 and while I am not using
  Windows much, I did use it a few times (video watching and browsing) and
  have not hit any issues.

  I have run the ubuntu grub loader memtest last night. 7 full runs, all
  passes.

- Let me know what information you need.
-
- Side note:
- Before filing this bug, I ran "ubuntu-bug linux" from the command line, it
gathered some information, I then clicked send and it seemed to send it. It
then opened this window in which I logged in and then filled this information
for this bug. As such, I am assuming some information has been attached to this
bug already even though I do not see it here.

This is plain false. Wanna come over my place to see it for yourself?

Again, this can be proved false on many computers. I can show you a few.

In other words: such grab area might not exist, so how on Earth can you say
this is fixed?

What about 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04 users? Can't you see there are complaints
from users of these versions as well?

  5. This bug is only fixed in Unity 3D. Any similar issues with other

This bug IS NOT FIXED. Just saying so won't magically change facts. And the
facts show very clearly LOTS of people have a really hard time grabbing
windows borders. Some people experience it at the top of the windows, some
at the sides, some at the bottom... (and we're not even talking about the
elusive target of Nautilus' sidebar resizing handle...). I'm no developer
so I can't imagine how you guys go about this thing, but it behaving
differently for different users on different computers should tell you
something.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2013-07-28 Thread Sam Spilsbury
Please stop asking to revert the status of this bug. It is fine as is:

 1. This bug was fixed in compiz and Unity in 11.04 (two years ago now). The
left, right and bottom window borders now have a ten-pixel each-way grab area.
 2. A similar grab area was added to the top border in 13.04
 3. If no such grab area exists and you are running Unity 3D, you can configure
the borders so that they do exist:
 11.04: Open /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml and
edit the tags under with the name "normal_focused" and
"normal_unfocused" and add left="left_padding" right="right_padding"
bottom="bottom_padding"
11.10 and onwards: Install mutter (sudo apt-get install mutter) and edit
org.gnome.mutter 'draggable-border-width' in dconf-editor
 4. No such grab area exists in Unity 2D. It will not be added to Unity 2D
because it would entail making metacity into a non-simple compositing manager.
Unity 2D was designed to be run without any hardware acceleration. As such, the
Unity 2D bug status is, and will remain "Invalid".
 5. This bug is only fixed in Unity 3D. Any similar issues with other desktop
environments (gnome-classic, xfce, kde) should be reported to the relevant
upstream.

2013-07-28 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Till Kamppeter, as per
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page? an update is
available for your BIOS (1.57). If you update to this, does it change
anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Thank you for your understanding.

** Summary changed:

[Bug 1202758] Re: hostname not resolvable on azure

2013-07-28 Thread Ben Howard
Ugh. Bouncing the interface seems ripe for problems, although that
should be mitigated by the fact that services won't be up. I will pursue
talking to MS about seeing if there is a better way to do this.

[Bug 1205903] Re: Quassel* tray icon not working with indicator-application

2013-07-28 Thread Rob Tongue
I did. I am actually using quassel-client-qt4. It is stuff like this
that is making me slowly move away from ubuntu variants. Unity is nice,
but it breaks too many other things by trying to be too different.
Thanks for the input.

Why all keyboard input hijacked then? I even see my startup applications
come up. If at any time I go to Passwords and Keys (seahorse) and lock
the Login keyring, after a while the dialog will come up and programs
stop responding to keyboard input.
