[Bug 1309615] [NEW] trying to upgrade to xubuntu 14.04. could not calculate upgrade

2014-04-18 Thread Arufa Agumeo
Public bug reported:

* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu

I don't think so...?

* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu

Am running 13.10. It is the current version of Ubuntu, as far as I know.

* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

I am running only a few unofficial software packages, abd I don't
believe they'd interfere with the upgrade.

2014-04-18 Thread randomstatement3
Public bug reported:

Upon upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04 i am unable to search for any

applications tab either. Please fix this soon as this is a major
hindrance. Newly installed applications as well as pinned applcations
are still shown on the launcher. If you need any more information feel

[Bug 1307236] Re: NVidia Issues - blurry text after upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04

2014-04-18 Thread Anthony Borrow
@Alberto - I understand that you do not support the NVidia installer. I
mentioned it as a workaround as that is what I needed to get my system
working again without the blur and I needed to go back to being
productive. I was thinking with Bill's information with the blur and
mine without that something might emerge as the cause - it seemed to be
focus related. Do you have a recommended package think would be best to
install nvidia-prime or another? When I get a moment, I could try
uninstalling the NVidia installer and then working with what is
supported to provide a nvidia-bug-report.log. Peace - Anthony

it seems the problem has been solved.

[Bug 1309625] [NEW] Xubuntu 14.04: Grub drops to rescue prompt with message: error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found.

2014-04-18 Thread Anco van Voskuilen
Public bug reported:

At first boot after a fresh install of Xubuntu 14.04, Grub goes to the
grub-rescue prompt with the message error: symbol
'grub_term_highlight_color' not found.

I tried to do a grub-reinstall as described on this page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing. I tried the rescue-
prompt method and the live-CD method.

I installed Xubuntu with the ' something else' partitioning method on an
system with 2 ssd's; one for Windows, and one for Xubuntu and two hdd's;
one with Windows files and one with my /home directory.

I tried to install the GRUB bootloader both SSD's, with the same
results. I also tried the option to replace Xubuntu during the
installation process.

[Bug 1302090] Re: Dell Alienware 14, Speaker sound output is mono until a headphone jack is plugged

2014-04-18 Thread Fabián Ezequiel Gallina
FWIW I'm not using pulseaudio, so no pactl here.

2.1 works fine since the discovery of the subwoofer pin.

Attached are the requested alsa-info.sh outputs.

Not sure about what you mean if the subwoofer needs both left and right
channel:

If it's that if I could use the subwoofer alone without the speakers,
that's doable, it's just a matter of muting Speaker and leave Bass
Speaker on, and then I have output just from the subwoofer.

If it's that if I can control left and right channels for the subwoofer
itself, I can, using the hda_analyzer at the node 0x1a, under the output
amplifier group Val[0] seems to mute a half of the subwoofer and
Val[1] mutes the other, seriously I don't know how that happens, I
always assumed the subwoofer to be a single speaker, but there it is.

As an additional note, the subwoofer is tied up to the Audio Mixer at
node 0x0e (Attached hda_analyzer screenshot as well for it), muting
Val[0] mutes all left output (as in Speakers, Subwoofer) and Val[1]
does the same but with the right channel.

Thanks again.

different versions of packages essential to Ubuntu. Please revert to the

2014-04-18 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your dmesg attachment in this bug report it
seems that there is a problem with your hardware. I recommend
performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you
might take include checking cable connections and using software tools
to investigate the health of your hardware. In the event that is is not
in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's status back to
New. Thanks and good luck!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Severity: normal
Installed from:Compiled sources

When you have the CDE color scheme or any KDE color scheme in which the
foreground text color is White (or light) many pages are rendered with
text white (And background white).

Easy way to reproduce:
- Set your color scheme to CDE.
- Start a new konqueror (starting a new one is important!)
- Go to one of the example sites below

Solutions:
- Enforce text color black
- Have an independent configuration for khtml colors

Examples:

If a webpage sets the font to white and background to black or a dark
image, and you override the background. You are left with white on
white.

What I did is override the font colour to dark grey. So atleast if a
webpage opens with black background, I can see the text in grey. -- But
that has its own disadvantages.

[Bug 1291969] Re: No usb on resume from suspend

2014-04-18 Thread Guus Geluk
I have the same problem here after a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04. When
I suspend I can still wake up de computer with my USB mouse or keyboard,
but they no longer function correctly. For instance the mouse cursor
will still move but clicking no longer works. I can wake up with the
keyboard but then it stops working. USB memory stick also seems frozen.
Reconnecting devices does not help. My keyboard lights up briefly but
that is all. The mouse completely stops working after reconnect.

On another partition I first did an upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04. Suspend
works fine here. I did a fresh install on another partition bescause it
would not boot. After the new install the grub menu was updated and it
works fine now. But then I noticed the suspend problem on the fresh
install.

I just attempted a USB install from the server iso as well. And ran
into the same issue.

Attached is the message I receive during grub installation. I pulled my

that it tried to install grub on my usb stick. If i had left the stick

Apologies to bug you like this, but could you be more specific on what needs
doing to revert to xorg?
On a regular note is this safe? I wouldn't want to get stuck on the terminal
version only in case something goes wrong with the xorg drivers but I'm
guessing the upgrade on top of that will take care of this right?

[Bug 1309639] [NEW] Installer locks after failing to install GRUB onto RAID array

2014-04-18 Thread PMOverfield
Public bug reported:

Am installing Trusty (AMD-64 Desktop), with /boot as a RAID-1 set
(ext2fs) under mdadm on a GPT partition, with a separate, non-RAID,
unformatted partition for BIOS-grub. At the stage of attempting to
install GRUB it fails, reporting fatal error. I get the window offering
the option (among others) to continue without installing GRUB anywhere.
I select this option, but the OK button never becomes active and no
further progress occurs. The installer shows signs of having crashed
or locked-up, so I cannot be confident that the remainder of the
installation has been completed, otherwise I could assemble the RAID-
sets at a mount-point, then chroot and complete the installation of GRUB
that way. I know that this build isn't intended for RAID installations,
but a clean failure would be helpful. Thank you.

[Bug 1309644] [NEW] file splice in pool causes network timeout which freezes both systems

2014-04-18 Thread Jim Kyle
Public bug reported:

I first noticed this about three weeks ago while scrolling through a
large PDF file via rdesktop; finally located error messages in kern.log
today. Symptom is sudden loss of network connection. Both systems
involved must be shut down, allowed to cool for several minutes, then
re-booted, to restore network actions. The kern.log entry indicates
timeout during file-splice action but I have not found more detail than
that.

[Bug 1161283] Re: Problems reported with .desktop files for sonic-visualiser

2014-04-18 Thread Brian Murray
Hello David, or anyone else affected,

Accepted app-install-data-ubuntu into trusty-proposed. The package will
build now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/app-
install-data-ubuntu/14.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 1308348] Re: network settings indicator missing from panel

2014-04-18 Thread metrancya-1404
As I wrote above, the problems started during the upgrade from 13.10 --
14.04 but not before the upgrade from kernel 3.11 (as in saucy) to 3.13
(as in trusty). Kernel 3.11 from 13.10 works under 14.04 without
problems!

While the lsmod output states that all relevant kernel modules
(ath/athk5/mac80211/cfg80211) are loaded for both kernels, 3.11 3.13,
the dmesg output for kernel 3.13 shows me fewer entries for all these
four modules. That could point to some incorrect interplay between
different kernels and general configuration settings...

What is the workaround for me:
1. press the Shift key during boot to unhide the grub boot menu.
2. Select from the Grub boot menu the entry for kernel 3.11
3. Go (with network, network applet and all indicators now being present).

That could provide some first aid for desperate upgraders that come from
13.10 to 14.04 having the same problem. It obviously will not help in
the case of a fresh 14.04 install...

[Bug 1309651] [NEW] MiniDLNA missing from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

2014-04-18 Thread Click
Public bug reported:

I noticed that MiniDLNA was deleted from 14.04 -
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/trusty/amd64/minidlna due to lp #1253071,
FTBFS, RC buggy, removed from Debian testing, not ported to libav9
which is quite vain explanation in my option.

Is there a plan to release package for 14.04 or MiniDLNA will not be
supported anymore?

Thanks!

[Bug 1309656] [NEW] Desktop installer can't proceed after selecting city

2014-04-18 Thread bradmont
Public bug reported:

On the desktop installer (14.04), on the select city screen, the default
option I am givin is Toronto. When I set my city as Quebec City or
Montreal (typing the name then selecting from the list that pops up),
the Proceed button is disabled and I cannot continue. If I set the
city back to Toronto, I can proceed with the install.

This issue is not new in 14.04, it has persisted for several releases; I
usually just set the city to Toronto and continue.

1) Release: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (desktop amd64)
2) Uncertain of package version, I don't know how to find this for the installer
3) I expect to be able to select my city and continue
4) I am unable to proceed if I change the city. Changing it back to the default
(Toronto) allows me to proceed.

[Bug 1309655] [NEW] freeipa-client-install points to wrong ntp.conf file

2014-04-18 Thread lee-machine
Public bug reported:

On a fresh 14.04-server install freeipa-client-install does not write to
the correct ntpd conf file. Using

ipa-client-install --enable-dns-updates --force-ntpd

it tries writing to:

/etc/sysconfig/ntpd

Which is not a correct path on Ubuntu

It needs to be /etc/default/ntpdate and /etc/default/ntp

Other than that, the client actually work! It joins the domain, pushes a
DNS entry, and users are able to login :)

** Affects: freeipa (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1309658] [NEW] Invalid comments in debian/apt.conf.autoremove

2014-04-18 Thread Stoyan Stoyanov
Public bug reported:

According to apt.conf(5) man page, the only valid comments in apt config
files are:

Lines starting with // are treated as comments (ignored), as well as
all text between /* and */, just like C/C++ comments.

There are comments in debian/apt.conf.autoremove
(/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/01autoremove) that start with '#' which breaks
other tools like augeas that follow strictly the definition of comments
in apt.conf's man page and rely on it to function properly.

1)
Description:Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Release:14.04

2) apt:
  Installed: 1.0.1ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1.0.1ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1.0.1ubuntu2 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

The file can be patched by running:
$ sed -i s/#/\/\// apt.conf.autoremove

** Affects: apt (Ubuntu)

2014-04-18 Thread Martin Halford
I have the same problem, but have managed to complete the upgrade from
12.04 to 14.04 using:

sudo echo ``mdadm hold'' | dpkg --set-selections

followed by:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
