[Bug 1659340] Re: Linux kernel 4.8 hangs at boot up

2017-01-31 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I built the next test kernel, up to the following commit:
1297667083d5442aafe3e337b9413bf02b114edb

The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1659340/1297667083d5442aafe3e337b9413bf02b114edb

Can you test that kernel and report back if it has the bug or not? I
will build the next test kernel based on your test results.

Thanks in advance

So to make this a little more elaborate:
- I managed to reproduce this with an unpatched glibc inside and outside the
  container just like @Tyler outlined.
- I managed to reproduce this with a patched glibc inside the container and an
  unpatched glibc outside the container.
- I managed to reproduce this with a patched glibc inside and outside the
  container.

So a patched glibc which returns ENODEV in case a symlink like /proc/self/fd/0
points to a pts device that lives in another namespace does not improve the
situation. The problem that @Tyler outlined still exists.

If you have the time, I would encourage you keep the profile enabled and
collect all the missing rules in a local/ profile whenever possible (not
possible for the lsb_release subprofile). If you desire, you could start
with what's in LP: #1533232 as I spend a lot of time collecting those
dbus and other rules. That's what I'd like to bring to the maintainer
when time permits.

[Bug 1659988] Re: Firefox apparmor profile: /usr/bin/python3: error while loading shared libraries: cannot apply additional memory protection after relocation: Permission denied

2017-01-31 Thread Thomas Mayer
@blantonradford Thanks for reporting back.

Please report back in bug #1643200, which is the right place for
black/white tabs.

I assume that your old version of Session Manager was incompatible to
E10S, which is why firefox did not enable it, which is why it worked.

If Session Manager 0.8.1.13 fixed that incompatibility, E10S eventually
got enabled because of that. Just with the result that you were left
with black/white tabs, now that apparmor was blocking the new feature.

[Bug 1659988] Re: Firefox apparmor profile: /usr/bin/python3: error while loading shared libraries: cannot apply additional memory protection after relocation: Permission denied

2017-01-31 Thread Thomas Mayer
@sziraki.tamas I experienced myself that reading from / writing to files
does not always work, depending on the chosen path. Is that your
problem?

To some extent, I think this is intentional: If firefox could read/write
to any path/file you have permissions as a user, that would render most
of the apparmor blockings useless.

The patch (hopefully) does not touch this behaviour.

Suggestions welcome, but please file a new ticket for a new problem.

2017-01-31 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Thanks for testing Yakkety. I reviewed the git logs between Xenail and
Yakkety and there are many drm commits. It would be easiest to perform
a Reverse bisect.

Commit 14de6c44d was added to Yakkety in Ubuntu-4.6.0-0.1. Can you test the
following kernel:
https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-team/+archive/ubuntu/bootstrap/+build/10600030

For a reverse bisect, we need to find the last bad kernel and first good
one.

[Bug 1659988] Re: Firefox apparmor profile: /usr/bin/python3: error while loading shared libraries: cannot apply additional memory protection after relocation: Permission denied

2017-01-31 Thread Blanton Radford
Thomas,

I believe I was already on FF 51.0.1, but after my Session Manager addon
updated to 0.8.1.13, I began having the issue where everything from the
Internet would display as black and white rectangles. I believe this
happened immediately, but I can't be sure as I was chasing a separate
problem at the time with gmail servers that appears to be a DNS issue
(very long traceroute times).

I applied the patch as you described for usr.bin.firefox_patched in post
#21, and FF began working again. Thanks for the work you put into the
patch!

Reporting the patch is a fix for this bug (1659988) as well as 1643200,
which is the first place I landed in LaunchPad.

Using:
Trusty
System76 gazp9 laptop
FF 51.0.1
Session Manager 0.8.1.13

Using your profile in #21, also, I take FF in enforce mode but partly always
fall back to unconfined mode while the apparmor_status shows the complete FF in
enforced mode. The download and upload only to and from a special folder does
not work.

[Bug 1659922] Re: Firefox 51.0.1 does not display pages/shows blank pages.

2017-01-31 Thread Thomas Mayer
@kamp000x If you have the same problem with the apparmor profile
disabled, then your problem is not related to apparmor. Then you have a
different problem. Maybe your drivers are not compatible.

>From my side, I can say that, if the issue is related to apparmor, the
E10S issues disappear as soon as FF's apparmor profile is disabled. I've
seen/tested that myself.

If your problem is not apparmor related, my patch won't fix it.

[Bug 1659922] Re: Firefox 51.0.1 does not display pages/shows blank pages.

2017-01-31 Thread Thomas Mayer
Ugly as it is, but mozilla could also maintain profiles for different
feature sets, or distros, respectively.

But there's more: Different versions of FF with different requirements.
The only right place to keep track of that is in the source repo of FF.
Even if Mozilla does not maintain it distro specific, it would allow
distros to keep track of necessary changes, at least. The latter
approach could at least serve as a reference.

The current situation is at least unsatisfying: Disabling the profile
because it's unmaintainable.

Same here. If it's not an issue, then something else definitely is, as i

[Bug 1659340] Re: Linux kernel 4.8 hangs at boot up

2017-01-31 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I'll start putting test kernels in unique directories, so I don't remove them.

I built the next test kernel, up to the following commit:
7597cdc066313bfd211cca2f9252dfeb41271391

The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1659340/7597cdc066313bfd211cca2f9252dfeb41271391

Can you test that kernel and report back if it has the bug or not? I
will build the next test kernel based on your test results.

Thanks in advance

Indeed but cross-distro compatibility is profiles as not every
distro/release have the same feature set. For example, not all supported
version of Ubuntu have dbus/ptrace mitigation support. Recently, Debian
also enabled Apparmor but with a smaller feature set than the latest Ubuntu.

That said, I will try to reach out to the Ubuntu maintainer to at least
improve that. If we get somewhere maybe Debian or upstream would be next.

My 4.4.0-42 kernel which booted fine and was my workaround for months
now hangs at boot like the later versions. I also discovered that I can
boot in 42 recovery mode and I get asked the luks password at boot. I
suspect a bad interaction with something else that got updated like
possibly the nvidia graphics which I am rather dependent on due to CUDA
etc.

Now running...
firstuser@kalymnos:~/scripts$ uname -a
Linux kalymnos 4.4.0-59-generic #80-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 6 17:47:47 UTC 2017
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
and I mount the encrypted filesystem via a sudo bash script :(

[Bug 1658255] Re: Kernel not enforcing module signatures under SecureBoot

2017-01-31 Thread Tim Gardner
Kees - there are archive shenanigans involved in getting a signed kernel
binary, hence the separate package.

Steve - I'm not sure about the rationale for grub booting unsigned
kernels. The foundations team might be able to explain it.

The problem is still there if I only deactivate the firefox profile.

Maybe it is related to another apparmor profile, the apparmor-profiles

[Bug 1659922] Re: Firefox 51.0.1 does not display pages/shows blank pages.

2017-01-31 Thread Thomas Mayer
@sdeziel In the long run, I think that mozilla should provide such a
profile, now that FF's dependencies can change at any time, whereas
distros must roll it out quickly because of security fixes.

Why should all the distros do that independently? There's a lot of
redundancy which could be allocated elsewhere.

[Bug 1659922] Re: Firefox 51.0.1 does not display pages/shows blank pages.

2017-01-31 Thread Thomas Mayer
@sdeziel Exactly. To be honest, I have seen your ticket and effort you
did. But I could not figure out what your version of the profile
intended to fix, because that is not documented anywhere.

That could also be the reason why nobody merged it within more than a
year. There's nobody to blaim for that, in my opinion. A maintainer
maintaining stable releases should at least know what a change is
supposed to fix.

My approach in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1659988 documents
each step and each issue which is supposed to be fixed.

That approach also is supposed to be minimal-invasive: Not more than
documented, no refactoring.

I even would not argue that my patch somehow is better. Eventually, you
fixed a lot more. I just don't know what it does because it's not
documented.

Let's hope for the best, may at least one of the patches be merged.
Personally, I don't care which, as long as things are finally fixed.

[Bug 1660537] Re: HTML Tidy is dooing a poor job; please update to newer HTML Tidy

2017-01-31 Thread Jeffrey Walton
> The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if
somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software
at https://github.com/htacg/tidy-html5/issues .

My bad... I did not check Debian. Let me see if there's a Debian bug
covering it.

Here's what MacPorts is providing:

$ port info tidy
tidy @5.2.0 (www)
Variants: debug, universal

Description: Tidy is a utility to clean up and fix broken HTML
files.
Homepage: http://www.html-tidy.org/

Build Dependencies: cmake, libxslt

It looks like Debian's HTML Tidy is producing the issue:

[Bug 1657845] Re: Unity8 snap can't load the testability libraries

2017-01-31 Thread Santiago Baldassin
Hi Michael, $SNAP/testability/ should be added to LD_LIBRARY_PATH. QT loads the
testability libraries if either the -testability command line argument is
passed to QCoreApplication, or if the
QT_LOAD_TESTABILITY environment variable is set

I see your point.

> How should a maintainer decide if that should be merged?

The problem is that nobody seems to care about Firefox's Apparmor
profile because it's disabled by default. I don't think that having many
small LPs will increase the likeliness of someone picking up the
individual changes one at the time and get them through SRU. I was
aiming for inclusion in the dev version of Ubuntu, in one batch.

Alright, I'll stop. There is no point in arguing here since we both
pursue the same goal: have good Apparmor support for Firefox

Simon

[Bug 1659716] Re: Please pickup the Valgrind fix for RDARAND and " Illegal opcode"

2017-01-31 Thread Jeffrey Walton
Thanks again Hans.

Looking at the bug report, something obvious (to me) was not clear...
The patch was already applied to Ubuntu 16.10. 16.10 does not produce
the Illegal Opcode.

Ubuntu 16.04 lacks the patch at the moment. 16.04 falls to the the
Illegal Opcode.

[Bug 1657845] Re: Unity8 snap can't load the testability libraries

2017-01-31 Thread Michael Terry
OK, I've kicked off a snap build/upload for unity8 that adds a plug for
this. But I'm not sure what the expectation is for actually using the
content interface.

So I plug into the testability slot provided by autopilot-qt. Which
gets mounted into $SNAP/testability/ -- so far so good.

But what's the expectation for using that? Add it to LD_LIBRARY_PATH in
the snap's wrapper and load the testability library if that path has
content?

I looked at ubuntu-calculator-app which also plugs into testability, but
it doesn't seem to do anything special once plugged.
