[Bug 1722427] Re: [error-report]error occurs when reading /etc/profile

2017-10-13 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I have found another way to fix this issue, which I think is better.
Fcitx is launched at login from the /usr/share/im-
config/data/22_fcitx.rc file. Changing line #6 in that file from

/usr/bin/fcitx &

to

/usr/bin/fcitx 2>/dev/null &

makes the 'noise' from launching Fcitx disappear so it won't trigger the
error dialog. This keeps the fix within the im-config package without
involving lightdm.

At least this worked for me on Unity. It would be great if some Kylin
users could test it on Ubuntu Kylin.

[Bug 1723288] Re: Re: My first Personal Bug

2017-10-13 Thread markackerm...@gmail.com
It Appears to be fixed - though too soon to be sure. A new update to
xwayland and xorg and similar things may have fixed it. It was somewhat
inconsistent.

It may be that I changed my boot order in boot devices so the "notebook
Hdd" is at the top. (Not the USB Hdd). I will restart again with the
BIOS changed back to the way I have ALWAYS had it with "USB Hdd" as
first priority.

Another likely related problem is hanging reboot (not shutting down
without playing around with C+A+F1-F3)

[Bug 1722988] Re: Crash, black screen with lightdm

2017-10-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1722920 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1722920

I'm marking as duplicate since this bug is no longer reproducible after
today's updates according to the comments here.

Till, Ubuntu 17.10 does use GDM by default. And if you upgrade now from
17.04, you should be transitioned from LightDM to GDM automatically
(unless you have other desktop environments installed I think).

LightDM itself does not use either unity-settings-daemon or gnome-
settings-daemon. unity-greeter though does use unity-settings-daemon.
Unity requires unity-settings-daemon to be installed for the lockscreen.

While I'd love to see unity-settings-daemon be removed, it would cause
regressions with keyboard shortcuts ("hotkeys") and gnome-control-
center's Displays panel wouldn't work. These are fixable with developer
effort (GNOME Flashback managed to fix both of these issues) but there
aren't really developers working on improving Unity now.

[Bug 1700657] Re: Touchpad not detected in Lenovo X1 Yoga / Yoga 720-15IKB

2017-10-13 Thread Aswin Gigi
Was trying to troubleshoot this after I got my 720 yesterday day and
this thread was a godsend, I downloaded the latest stable kernel,
applied the line patch and it worked perfectly. Thanks!! :D

But I think one issue that I am running into is what others mentioned
above, I have to power cycle/reboot one or more times to get the machine
to boot into Ubuntu, otherwise I just get a black screen and it hangs. I
think it was mentioned above that it was a problem with GRUB mostly, is
there an easy way to fix that ?

[Bug 1723465] [NEW] Compiling is not working due to beta release - libeigen3-dev - xenial

2017-10-13 Thread Philipp Rossak
Public bug reported:

When I try to compile this Project here: https://github.com/cdcseacave/openMVS
with the Ubuntu xenial libeigen3-dev Package (eigen3 3.3~beta1-2) I'm receiving
some errors. When I build the program with a local stable version, everything
works.

Could you please update this package to a mature (stable) Version?

Best,
Philipp

[Bug 1723462] [NEW] GNOME: Universal Access - Larger mouse cursor only works with GDM not with LightDM and with GDM inconsistennt

2017-10-13 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

I have a vision problem and due to this I do not see very well the mouse
pointer in its original size on my 14" HiDPI 2560x1440 QHD screen of my
laptop. Therefore I go to "Universal Access" in the GNOME Settings and
choose "Medium" for "Cursor Size".

Due to bug 1722988 I happened to temporarily use GDM instead of LightDM
and so I observed that my cursor size change is only applied if I am
running my system with GDM as the greeter. With LightDM the cursor stays
in original size all the time. So I have currently switched to GDM again
to be able to have the larger mouse cursor.

The commmands I have used (as of comment #9 of bug 1722988):

--
sudo systemctl disable lightdm
sudo systemctl stop lightdm
sudo systemctl enable gdm #Seems to fail
sudo systemctl start gdm
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 #Shows lightdm selected
select gdm3, push enter

Reboot
--

But the large mouse cursor with GDM is also not perfect, as in some
situations it stays in the small size.

No, since xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is not installed by default. Two-
finger scrolling used to work without it, so I don't think that's where
the solution is.

[Bug 1723457] [NEW] Launcher set on auto-hide doesn't detect mouse hover when a contextual menu is open anywhere but in the launcher itself

2017-10-13 Thread Thomas Vandenhede
Public bug reported:

1) UBUNTU RELEASE

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
Release:16.04
Codename: xenial

2) VERSION OF (POTENTIALLY) OFFENDING PACKAGE(S)

compiz:
  Installed: 1:0.9.12.2+16.04.20160823-0ubuntu1
unity:
  Installed: 7.4.0+16.04.20160906-0ubuntu1

3) EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

Having the unity launcher behavior set on auto-hide:
- I right-click anywhere on the desktop OR in an application OR simply
left-click on one of the top panel indicators so that a contextual menu appears
ANYWHERE ON THE SCREEN BUT IN THE LAUNCHER.
- I expect that when I push my mouse to the side of my screen, the launcher
appears and stays there as long as my mouse is hovering over it.

4) ACTUAL BEHAVIOR

Given the above circumstances, the launcher appears but immediately
auto-hides even though my mouse cursor is still hovering over it. This
only happens when a contextual menu is open, except if that contextual
menu is a launcher quicklist.

NOTE: this unexpected behavior happens independently of the position of
the launcher (left or bottom).

[Bug 1670041] Re: Poor performance of Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac (rev 32) (Killer Wireless 1535)

2017-10-13 Thread Alexandru PLESCO
Using ubuntu 17.10, kernel 4.13-0.15-generic on XPS 13 9360 QCA6174 rev 32.
Connection on 5Ghz band AC Freebox router.

Had the same problem, however browser speedtest [1] worked fine, except that
any upload on nfs or cifs were from 0 to max 1MB/s with system freeze when
uploading big files.
Changed in networkmanager the MTU to 1400 (trial and error) and now the upload
speed on nfs is around 25 MB/s.

Iperf still gives bad results for uploads. On NFS the speed increases
from 2 MB/s - 25MB/s in about 5 seconds, so it seems that the TCP
algorithm is/was the problem here.

[1] http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/6703944909
http://pic.nperf.com/r/184530901-oTbTp0X2.png

The WIFI is the bottleneck here as over Ethernet I get ~
500mbps/200mbps.

I hope this helps.

Apparently you were using DKMS and it worked fine until 4.10.0-37.

I think the best approach here is to remove the DKMS.

Till, you should perhaps open a bug on systemd upstream on github since
it's likely an issue there? There might have a clue about it or people
who are available to debug the issue...

[Bug 1723450] [NEW] Unable to start "gksu system-config-samba"

2017-10-13 Thread Richard Elkins
Public bug reported:

I installed the samba server packages plus system-config-samba. Next, I
attempted to run the Samba configuration applet from the "System"
section of the "Settings" menu item. The results is as follows:

Error
Unable to start "gksu system-config-samba"
Failed to execute child process “gksu” (No such file or directory)

When I run `sudo system-config-samba` in a terminal window, I see this:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/sbin/system-config-samba", line 45, in
mainWindow.MainWindow(debug_flag)
File "/usr/share/system-config-samba/mainWindow.py", line 121, in __init__
self.basic_preferences_win = basicPreferencesWin.BasicPreferencesWin(self,
self.xml, self.samba_data, self.samba_backend, self.main_window)
  File "/usr/share/system-config-samba/basicPreferencesWin.py", line 97, in
__init__
self.admin = libuser.admin()
SystemError: could not open configuration file `/etc/libuser.conf': No such
file or directory

Next I tried `sudo touch /etc/libuser.conf` since I know that this was a
work-around for the same symptoms in the past (Ubuntu 15.04, Bug
#1453223). Now, I can successfully run `sudo system-config-samba` in a
terminal window. However, the applet still fails with the same
symptoms.

Please note that I am not stuck; my Samba server is working fine. My
maintenance work-around is to edit /etc/samba/smb.conf by hand and then
restart the smbd service manually - an oldie that still suffices.

Feel free to contact me if the automatically-attached evidence is not
sufficient for investigation.

[Bug 1699161] Re: lshw crashes with SEGV in privileged containers

2017-10-13 Thread Eric Desrochers
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * lshw crashes with SEGV in privileged containers, unless you disable
the 'usb' test: $ lshw -disable usb

  [Test Case]

  ## Create a privileged container. ##
  $ lxc launch ubuntu:16.04 priv -c security.privileged=true
  Creating priv
  Starting priv

  ## Execute lshw inside the privileged container. ##
  $ lxc exec priv bash
  root@priv:~#

  root@priv:~#lshw
  Segmentation fault

  [Regression Potential]

   * Risks of regression are low.

   * I have tested lshw inside containers (unprivileges/privileges) and
baremetal with success connecting different types of usb device :
webcam, usb keys, ... The usb output of lshw cmd is shown as expected,
but this time without segfaulting when container in privilege mode.

   * Basically, the code look if both files doesn't exists

  #define PROCBUSUSBDEVICES "/proc/bus/usb/devices"
  #define SYSKERNELDEBUGUSBDEVICES "/sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices"
  ...
    if (!exists(SYSKERNELDEBUGUSBDEVICES) && !exists(PROCBUSUSBDEVICES))
  __return false;

I kept the above in place.

But what if only 1 of the 2 files exists ?

For that reason I added an extra verification if
  SYSKERNELDEBUGUSBDEVICES exist -> fopen SYSKERNELDEBUGUSBDEVICES.

  and

if fopen SYSKERNELDEBUGUSBDEVICES fails and PROCBUSUSBDEVICES exist then
  -> fopen "PROCBUSUSBDEVICES"

The code first look for SYSKERNELDEBUGUSBDEVICES and if it fails it jump
  to PROCBUSUSBDEVICES.

But if PROCBUSUSBDEVICES fails there was no mechanism to skip, thus
  segfault.

I also added another if statement in case PROCBUSUSBDEVICES fails like
in this situation (no such file or directory) in privileged container,
same as if SYSKERNELDEBUGUSBDEVICES can't be opened to force to jump on
  trying PROCBUSUSBDEVICES.

[Bug 1722226] Re: linux-azure: fix systemd ADT test

2017-10-13 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
This is invalid assessment / consensus.

instead systemd should be skipping tests that require modprobing and
removing scsi_debug module with different parameters for each test, as
we have kernels that do not ship debugging/developer modules or don't
support module loading at all.

It is expected for systemd ADT test suites to change and there is a
separate bug about it.

Please do not ship scsi_debug, unless linux-azure itself needs it on
azure

[Bug 1722226] Re: linux-azure: fix systemd ADT test

2017-10-13 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
Also see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
azure/+bug/1721558 where regression test suite can only ever pass when
linux-azure is triggered by linux-meta-azure. In all other cases the
system is not upgraded to the expected kernel variant and is not
rebooted into said kernel, therefore testing fails.

http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/l/linux-azure/xenial/amd64

fixing that bug in linux-* kernels / testing framework would be
extremely welcomed.

[Bug 1723434] Re: grub2 splash screen displays excessively long package version number

This becomes less of an issue when the newly-released grub 2.02 is
included, probably in the 18.04 cycle; but we should still clean this up
in a future-proof way.

[Bug 1723434] [NEW] grub2 splash screen displays excessively long package version number

2017-10-13 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

grub2 is currently at version 2.02~beta3-4ubuntu6 in artful, and
2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.14 in xenial.

While it's important to be able to know from within the bootloader the
exact version of grub that is running for bug reporting and
troubleshooting purposes, this is a very ugly string to display to the
user in the default path.

We should patch upstream grub to display a user friendly string in the
banner, and hide the full package version in some variable that's
available from the GRUB console for debugging purposes.

[Bug 1723127] Re: Intel i40e PF reset due to incorrect MDD detection (continues...)

2017-10-13 Thread Dan Streetman
> How do we proceed? :-)

one bug at a time, please. As this NIC's "MDD" behavior doesn't
indicate what happened that it disliked, I can't tell if that is related
or not to the MDD events, but I suspect not, especially if you have not
seen that happen for kernels when you did get MDD events.

since the Ubuntu 4.4.0 isn't an ancestor of the Ubuntu 4.10.0 kernel, to
bisect we would need to start at the merge base anyway (mainline 4.4
kernel); and since there are no changes to the i40e driver between
mainline 4.10 and Ubuntu 4.10.0, a bisect will be a lot easier if we
shift over to the mainline kernel series.

Are you able to test various kernel versions during the bisect process?
It may take a while, and it's important to make sure at each step to
determine for certain if the kernel is 'good' or 'bad' - an incorrect
evaluation at any step leads to an incorrect endpoint.

If you are able to help with a kernel bisect by testing, can you test
each of these kernels:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4-wily/

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.10/

I expect the v4.4 to be 'bad' (encounter the MDD event) and 4.10 to be
'good' (no MDD event), based on your evaluation of the Ubuntu kernels
based on those versions. If those are good/bad as expected, we can
start the bisection between them.

[Bug 1616024] Re: [16.10 FEAT] Add new package numcatl for s390x

2017-10-13 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * numactl is not available on xenial on s390x for no good reason,
+ simply it was missing from the arch field whitelist.
+
+ * This results in extra differences required to backport linux-hwe
+ kernels; qemu for cloudarchive; etc.
+
+ * In general it would be nice to have numactl available in xenial.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * numactl package built and published on s390x in xenial
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * No change rebuild on other architectures may result in a missbuilt,
+ thus also libnuma1 users should be retested (e.g. qemu)
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ * Original bug report.
+
Add platform support for s390x for numactl.

Already available for x86 and Power
