[Bug 1752215] Re: Server - LAMP installation no longer asks for a mysql password

2018-03-01 Thread Robie Basak
This is intentional in mysql-5.7. The package defaults to Unix socket
authentication instead. There is no longer a root password by default.
As long as you're Unix root, you can log in as MySQL root.

I guess the test needs updating. Sorry, I didn't think of that when I
landed this change in MySQL packaging.

That's part of fixing bug #1732780 and making files listed in the

[Bug 1522675] Re: Warning messages about unsandboxed downloads

2018-03-01 Thread Norbert
OK, Ads2. This bug is annoying. Nothing more. Yesterday another
newbie installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS after my recommendation. He was very
dissapointed seeing this message.

Ubuntu developers should understand that annoying bugs should be fixed
as fast as possible as Critical bugs. It does not matter that such bugs
do not result in data loss. Such bugs makes negative reputation of whole
Ubuntu. So they should be fixed.

the message comes up, there is no problem with the install/upgrade happening

nowhere near as urgent as bugs that actually result in the wrong behavior

[Bug 1751005] Re: libreoffice cannot open a document not within $HOME

2018-03-01 Thread Olivier Tilloy
David, that bug was for the version of libreoffice in the ubuntu
archive.

The snap is a different thing altogether. With it, you should be able to
access your files under /media by issuing the following command in a
terminal:

snap connect libreoffice:removable-media

Files in other locations are not accessible, that remains a problem to
be discussed and solved.

[Bug 1752761] Re: Regression in vga handling ubuntu10.21 to ubuntu10.22

2018-03-01 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi Carl,
thank you for your detailed report!

This is the second qemu/xen bug for regressions in these security
updates in one day - with none (=0) of them over the last two years -
unlikely to be a coincidence.

@Marc - I don't see an obvious change, but you have way more context on these
changes since you have backported them. Do you have any info of a potential
regression in them?
Maybe the CVE-2018-5683 change?

@Carl - your detailed steps are already great.
Could you give it a try if the same applies to a unmodified (gplpv) and
non-prepared/installed windows as well?
Maybe by using an ISO of [1] in your already prepared setup - and if it fails
as well sharing the commands you did for that as well? That would make it even
better to reproduce.

@Carl - we have another report on even Lubuntu iso's stalling. If you
could (since all other parts of your setup are already ready) try the
same with a boot from [2] - that is reported to hang with the new
version.

If the steps above could be confirmed I'd expect that helps Marc a lot
to look into the individual changes in this regard.

Probably related to bug: 1752375

[1]: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10
[2]:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/17.10.1/release/lubuntu-17.10.1-desktop-amd64.iso

P.S. If this doesn't reproduce for us, but Mark would provide ppa builds
with individual fixes - would you be willing and able to check them?

[Bug 1752375] Re: Massive performance regression caused by recent spectre/meltdown patches

2018-03-01 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi Phillip,
there was no recent change to Xen and the ones in qemu in regard to
spectre/meltdown are all opt-in. You have to change the guest cpu to pick the
things up - well that is it in kvm, but you mentioned xen - I'm not sure at all
how it works there.

Could you outline exactly:
1. which are the two versions of qemu-system-x86 that are good and bad (there
were a lot of security fixes recently)?
2. the command line you use to invoke the live cd under xen?
3. if you could check, does on your system the same apply if you run it under
KVM ?

@Marc - any idea which change could be involved?

[Bug 1752798] [NEW] prevents successful boot to desktop and gets stuck in a trying-to-start-X loop

Public bug reported:

Upon upgrading the package from version 18.04.1 to 18.04.2 and
subsequent reboot, the system is rendered unable to start lightdm and
gets stuck in an endless loop retrying.

This happened on 2 laptops, one company machine and one personal

I'm running bionic beaver on both of them, with bionic-updates and

2018-03-01 Thread David Stewart
I have just updated Ubuntu 17.10 and LibreOffice 6.0.1.1 snap1, Rebooted my PC
(even though it did not ask for it. Tested and still do not have access to my

libreoffice spread sheet file (with macros) in my home directory, and it worked
fine.
Still having a deny of access to files not in home directory. David

[Bug 1752711] Re: cloud-init no longer processes user data on GCE in artful

2018-03-01 Thread Chad Smith
** Description changed:

+ http://pad.lv/1741093
+
+ === Begin SRU Template ===
+ [Impact]
+ Any user-data provided when creating google cloud instances is ignored so no
instance customization is observed. This is a silent failure and no tracebacks
in cloud-init represent that failure to the user.
+
+ Providing a simple cloud-config to set a hostname will provide a quick

[Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2018-03-01 Thread Peter Silva
OK, video is back now: apt-install ubuntu-mate-desktop fixed something.
It was already installed, but doing it again tickled something. I logged into
mater, and there was half a dozen core dumps of various components, and then
everything started working. (I don´t actually use mate, it was just trying
to see if issue was related to desktop environment in use.) I logged out, and
now everything is now normal again.

now I can log in again, with the same environment I had before the problem.
I´ve now commented out bionic proposed from /etc/apt/sources.list
stuff looks ok.

[Bug 1522675] Re: Warning messages about unsandboxed downloads

2018-03-01 Thread Ads20000
Norbert, making comments on bugs attacking developers for not doing
enough to fix the bug just annoys the developers, it doesn't help fix
the bug. Either take more proactive action as necessary (I don't know
what's needed at the moment) or be patient. Also check the readme at the
start of the description, it's cosmetic so it's Low priority by
definition, you can't change that unless if you fight elsewhere to
change the Importance descriptors.

[Bug 1752772] [NEW] r8169 ethernet card don't work after returning from suspension

2018-03-01 Thread Leonardo Müller
Public bug reported:

I have noticed that the network stopped working on my desktop after I've
suspended the system and woke it up. On dmesg there are messages like:

[  150.877998] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready
[  150.944101] do_IRQ: 3.37 No irq handler for vector
[  150.944105] r8169 :01:00.0 enp1s0: link down
[  150.944180] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready

When using Xenial (from a different install), this problem is not
happening. This is happening on Bionic.

There are only two ways to restore connectivity:
1) Reboot the system;
2) Remove the r8169 module and reinsert it with modprobe.

The motherboard is a AsRock H55M-LE and the Ethernet controller is:

[Bug 1752053] Re: nvidia-390 fails to boot graphical display

2018-03-01 Thread Peter Silva
I now have drivers from bionic proposed, the problem I had before
was that I had attempted to manually correc nvidia-drm-outputclass-ubuntu.conf
by commenting out the lines which had caused errors before,
and re-installing wasn't overwriting it.
I returned it to default state. I can now get the lightdm up.

on xorg.0.log it seems to load now, I get to the login dialog,
but none of my sessions will load ( I just go back to the lightdm dialog.)
there are no errors, it just dumps me back at the lightdm
screen. I added a bunch of -desktop packages to see if it was an
environment thing. The failure to login happens with *ubuntu*, *unity
(default)*, *Ubuntu on Wayland*. With *mate* it doesn't exist, but I get a
screen with a single icon, and no other elements of a desktop, so I can only
open
shells.

[Bug 1718931] Re: No VPN autoconnect

2018-03-01 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Okay, so...why isn't this a priority bugfix? I love gnome, don't get me
wrong, but when I can't even autoconnect to my VPN like I did countless
times in the past few years running Ubuntu on Unity without compromising
the security of my system something is wrong. There needs to be an
option - and a working one at that - for auto-connecting to a VPN
through the Gnome NetworkManager GUI. The KDE folks fixed this ages ago
with KWallet, I suspect this involves the Gnome-Keyring. This is a
*very* annoying problem. Should I report the bug on the Gnome
bugtracker? So frustrating when this is an extremely common problem with
nobody actually looking into *why* it's happening or how to fix it. I'm
afraid this one is beyond me.

[Bug 1752767] [NEW] grub2 regression, simultaneous console and video graphical glitches with new patch

2018-03-01 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Public bug reported:

Okay, so the following patch at
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/356413428/grub2_2.02~beta3-4ubuntu7.1_2.02~beta3-4ubuntu7.2.diff.gz
which basically amounts to changing a single line in /etc/grub.d/00_header
TOTALLY breaks my menu selection graphics when I boot up. Every time a line
changes, like as in scrolling the menu or watching the countdown timer, I can
see the console mode GRUB line flashing black and white behind the video gfx
mode screen. I believe this regression is caused entirely by Dann Frazier's
idea for the grub patch: "Instead of switching from "console" to "gfxterm",
let's output to both." *sigh*

Removing the single change, the "--append" flag, in the file
/etc/grub.d/00_header and regenerating the grub.cfg file completely
solves the problem. What concerns me is that this patch somewhat breaks
the average user's default grub gfx mode; it looks glitchy and horrible.
I simply cannot tolerate this behavior on an incredibly simple boot
selection menu, let alone on an actual grub theme, KDE-style. My machine
is a very standard HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Mini Desktop, and I had no
problems before with GRUB doing this horrible-looking pop-from-behind
simultaneous video and console behavior. This tiny patch represents a
misguided and frankly appalling regression.

And yes, this applies upstream to Bionic Beaver (I tried the proposed
package also) as well as the current version of the grub2 package on
Artful Aardvark. Please fix before the Ubuntu LTS release ships with
this glaring bug.

[Bug 1752481] Re: Regressions in 2.39.2 in xenial-updates in classic snaps (relative to 2.35)

2018-03-01 Thread Nish Aravamudan
Sigh, there's another regression it looks like (with sergiusens' ppa):

With 2.35:

$ snap run --shell git-ubuntu
wnacc@pitfall:~$ which gpgv
/snap/git-ubuntu/x21/usr/bin/gpgv
nacc@pitfall:~$ ldd `which gpgv`
linux-vdso.so.1 =>  (0x7ffc73fd2000)
libz.so.1 => /snap/core/current/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libz.so.1
(0x7f6c95623000)
libbz2.so.1.0 => /snap/core/current/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libbz2.so.1.0
(0x7f6c95413000)
libgcrypt.so.20 => /snap/git-ubuntu/current/usr/lib/libgcrypt.so.20
(0x7f6c950b2000)
libgpg-error.so.0 => /snap/git-ubuntu/current/usr/lib/libgpg-error.so.0
(0x7f6c94e99000)
libc.so.6 => /snap/core/current/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
(0x7f6c94acf000)
/snap/core/current/lib64/../lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ld-2.23.so =>
/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x7f6c9583d000)

with PPA snapcraft:

$ snap run --shell git-ubuntu
ubuntu@nacc-bastion:~$ which gpgv
/snap/git-ubuntu/378/usr/bin/gpgv
ubuntu@nacc-bastion:~$ ldd `which gpgv`
linux-vdso.so.1 =>  (0x7fff98bee000)
libz.so.1 => /snap/core/current/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libz.so.1
(0x7f6d3d627000)
libbz2.so.1.0 => /snap/core/current/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libbz2.so.1.0
(0x7f6d3d417000)
libgcrypt.so.20 =>
/snap/core/current/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgcrypt.so.20 (0x7f6d3d136000)
libgpg-error.so.0 =>
/snap/git-ubuntu/378/usr/bin/../../lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgpg-error.so.0
(0x7f6d3cf21000)
libc.so.6 => /snap/core/current/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
(0x7f6d3cb57000)
/snap/core/current/lib64/../lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ld-2.23.so =>
/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x7f6d3d841000)

This is a serious regression for classic snaps that were wroking before.
And are fundamentally broken now.

[Bug 1752683] Re: race condition on rmm for module ldap (ldap cache)

2018-03-01 Thread Rafael David Tinoco
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * Apache users using ldap module might face this if using multiple
+ threads and shared memory activated for apr memory allocator (default in
+ Ubuntu).
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Configure apache to use ldap module, for authentication e.g., and wait for
the race condition to happen.
+ * Analysis made out of a dump from a production environment.
+ * Bug has been reported multiple times upstream in the past 10 years.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * ldap module has broken locking mechanism when using apr mem mgmt.
+ * ldap would continue to have broken locking mechanism.
+ * race conditions could still exist.
+ * could could brake ldap module.
+ * patch is upstreamed in next version to be released.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ ORIGINAL CASE DESCRIPTION:

  Problem summary:

  apr_rmm_init acts as a relocatable memory management initialization

  it is used in: mod_auth_digest and util_ldap_cache

  From the dump was brought to my knowledge, in the following sequence:

  - util_ldap_compare_node_copy()
  - util_ald_strdup()
  - apr_rmm_calloc()
  - find_block_of_size()

  Had a "cache->rmm_addr" with no lock at "find_block_of_size()"

  cache->rmm_addr->lock { type = apr_anylock_none }

  And an invalid "next" offset (out of rmm->base->firstfree).

  This rmm_addr was initialized with NULL as a locking mechanism:

  From apr-utils:

  apr_rmm_init()

- if (!lock) {  <-- 2nd
argument to apr_rmm_init()
- nulllock.type = apr_anylock_none; <--- found in the dump
- nulllock.lock.pm = NULL;
- lock = &nulllock;
- }
+ if (!lock) {  <-- 2nd
argument to apr_rmm_init()
+ nulllock.type = apr_anylock_none; <--- found in the dump
+ nulllock.lock.pm = NULL;
+ lock = &nulllock;
+ }

  From apache:

  # mod_auth_digest

- sts = apr_rmm_init(&client_rmm,
-NULL, /* no lock, we'll do the locking ourselves */
-apr_shm_baseaddr_get(client_shm),
-shmem_size, ctx);
+ sts = apr_rmm_init(&client_rmm,
+    NULL, /* no lock, we'll do the locking ourselves */
+    apr_shm_baseaddr_get(client_shm),
+    shmem_size, ctx);

  # util_ldap_cache

- result = apr_rmm_init(&st->cache_rmm, NULL,
-   apr_shm_baseaddr_get(st->cache_shm), size,
-   st->pool);
+ result = apr_rmm_init(&st->cache_rmm, NULL,
+   apr_shm_baseaddr_get(st->cache_shm), size,
+   st->pool);

  It appears that the ldap module chose to use "rmm" for memory allocation,
using
- the shared memory approach, but without explicitly definiting a lock to it.
- Without it, its up to the caller to guarantee that there are locks for rmm
+ the shared memory approach, but without explicitly definiting a lock to it.
+ Without it, its up to the caller to guarantee that there are locks for rmm
  synchronization (just like mod_auth_digest does, using global mutexes).

  Because of that, there was a race condition in "find_block_of_size" and a call
- touching "rmm->base->firstfree", possibly "move_block()", in a multi-threaded
+ touching "rmm->base->firstfree", possibly "move_block()", in a multi-threaded
  apache environment, since there were no lock guarantees inside rmm logic (lock
- was "apr_anylock_none" and the locking calls don't do anything).
+ was "apr_anylock_none" and the locking calls don't do anything).

  In find_block_of_size:

- apr_rmm_off_t next = rmm->base->firstfree;
+ apr_rmm_off_t next = rmm->base->firstfree;

  We have:

- rmm->base->firstfree
-   Decimal:356400
-   Hex:0x57030
+ rmm->base->firstfree
+  Decimal:356400
+  Hex:0x57030

  But "next" turned into:

  Name : next
-   Decimal:8320808657351632189
-   Hex:0x737973636970653d
+  Decimal:8320808657351632189
+  Hex:0x737973636970653d

  Causing:

- struct rmm_block_t *blk = (rmm_block_t*)((char*)rmm->base +
+ struct rmm_block_t *blk = (rmm_block_t*)((char*)rmm->base +
  next);

- if (blk->size == size)
+ if (blk->size == size)

  To segfault.

[Bug 1752687] Re: Quanta D52B-1U unable to PXE-boot in EFI mode

2018-03-01 Thread Rod Smith
Andres, the fragments you're seeing in the pcap file look like GRUB code
to me. Keep in mind that's just a raw capture of EVERYTHING that passed
over the MAAS server's local interface for the time during which I was
booting the node, so that includes the GRUB binary that was passed from
the MAAS server to the node, and even a few interactions with unrelated
machines. You'd need to use wireshark or something similar to properly
decode it.

As noted in my comment #9, above, it looks to me like ARP responses from
the MAAS server are getting lost by the node AFTER GRUB has been
(presumably successfully, although I've not tried to analyze the tcpdump
results to verify this) delivered to the node. This could be a GRUB bug,
a Quanta firmware bug, or a bug in how the two interact with each other.
Then too, my knowledge of how they all interact is limited, so my
conclusion may be in error.

As to the rest, both Jeff and I tried completely disabling each of the
machine's two network ports (they're 10Gbps fiber connections, FWIW). In
some of my own tests, I tried typing "exit" at the "grub>" prompt. When
both ports were enabled, this resulted in a second boot attempt,
presumably one from each device. The TFTP request log snippet you've
quoted looks consistent with one of those runs.

Other EFI machines do work fine; I deployed two yesterday, for instance.
(They were both Quanta machines, but a different model.)

[Bug 1752761] [NEW] Regression in vga handling ubuntu10.21 to ubuntu10.22

2018-03-01 Thread Carl Morgan
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Corporate environment, Windows XenU platforms, using QEMU HVM (qemu-
system-x86) on multiple Ubuntu Xen0 platforms. Established stable
production environment (for > 1-5 years), Ubuntu and Windows nodes
getting latest patches etc. Dell R6XX series server hardware.

After updates from mainline: 1:2.5+dfsg-5ubuntu10 to 1:2.5+dfsg-
5ubuntu10.22 a reboot of XenU VMs very slow and repeated BlueScreening.

Windows Server 2012, does come up after 4+ minutes booting.

Windows Server 2008R8, Windows 7 Pro, Windows 10 Pro VMs fail to boot with blue
screen "framebuf" STOP.  (PNG available).

Boot to safe mode (very slow ~ 4mins to login screen) and remove video
drivers, reboot succeeds, windows drivers auto updated, reboot fails.

Testing completed on Windows Server 2008R8 images including migration of VM
Disk devices to other Dell rack servers:

o Xenial Xen0 server - Same issues
o Trusty Xen0 server - Same issues
o Precise Xen0 server - Fast boot / no issues

On Xenial systems, downgrading qemu-system-x86 to version 1:2.5+dfsg-
5ubuntu10 reverts to previous performance / stability (~25 secs to
loginscreen) = all good.

Tested PPA versions of qemu-system-x86 with local dpkg installs, version
ubuntu10.21 works fine, ubuntu10.22 fails. Proposed ubuntu10.23 also
fails.

QEMU Command line used (unchanged between good and back observations):

[Bug 1565940] Re: bluetoothctl systematically hangs when there is no bluetooth hardware

2018-03-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I can reproduce the bug in 16.04 but it seems to be fixed in 18.04:

$ echo '' | bluetoothctl
No agent is registered
$

$ bluetoothctl < /dev/null
[bluetooth]# quitt to bluetoothd...
No agent is registered
$

I'm going to declare this fix released and nominate 17.10 for a fix
(whatever the fix would be).

[Bug 1752709] Re: Left mouse button gets stuck down (in software), usually after suspend/resume

2018-03-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I would like to find out if this is a problem in libinput.

Can you please try installing Unity (package 'unity-session')? Then log
in to Unity and tell us if the problem also occurs there?

Re: [Bug 1751518] Re: video blanks after boot with dual monitors

2018-03-01 Thread Alan Bland
I made a fresh install.  The problem is gone.

There were some other weird behaviors.  So I made a fresh install.
Which worked.  It continues to work after updating the kernel.

I don't know what was wrong with the previous installation.  The
computer seems to be working well now.

Thanks for the reply.

I will look into testing the 4.16 kernel, but my time is limited.  It
won't be soon.

[Bug 1752111] Re: Xorg on Bionic doesn't start anymore

2018-03-01 Thread Renaud Lepage
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1752053 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1752053

Current "fix" / workaround, per my own post in #1752053:

I managed to fix my setup by using the Graphics Drivers PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa) and
forcing the install of version 390.25-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1 (apt-get
install nvidia-390=390.25-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1 or something). I suspect
version 390.25-0ubuntu1 is broken.
