Re: [Bug 1768017] Re: grub-install crashes when installing ubuntu on btrfs

2018-06-11 Thread johnny cernato
Ubiquity crashed trying to install grub, the popup appeared asking me to
choose a different destination or continue installing without a bootloader,
unfortunately the computer was not responsive anymore -> I had to
hard-reset the device and install manually.
Afterwards the system worked - kind of. Whatever ubiquity does after
installing grub (clean up??) was never performed, I had a couple of issues
mainly with python related packages, most of them could be fixed by
reinstalling them with apt. At some point however I got fed up (I tried
installing at least 2 times) and installed Fedora instead...
I'm sorry I can't provide more information but I was pretty pissed at that
time...

cheers

[Bug 1776269] Re: Installer causes VM to be paused

2018-06-11 Thread John Bester
How difficult would it be to have a PPA repository with the qemu /
libvirt version that was distributed with 17.10? I know that 18.04 is an
LTS and therefore big software changes will not happen. I have to
rebuild a server and install 17.10 if I do not get a solution to this
process quickly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Bug 1776392] [NEW] Attemp to reinstall after computer crashed.

2018-06-11 Thread Babelhau
Public bug reported:

Computer crashed after I closed an admin session after an update. The
update seemed to be completed. Was it really the case ? It could, maybe,
that the cleanup after the update was not yet completed ? If it is the
case, why could I close the session ? The session should have kept open
until the cleanup was completed. Strange.

Best regards.

[Bug 1776269] Re: Installer causes VM to be paused

2018-06-11 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi John,
I didn't merge a newer libvirt for Cosmic yet that you could test right now.
Also the attachment you mentioned didn't make it to the bug, would you mind
attaching it (again)?

Usually dropping to paused means that qemu ran e.g. into an assertion or
something like it.
So (maybe you had already) have a look at the guest log at
/var/log/libvirt/qemu/.log

I can tag this to give you a ping once I have a newer libvirt, but that
will be a while (vactaion time). But lets sort out the logs first.

[Bug 1326954]

2018-06-11 Thread RussianNeuroMancer
In addition to Dell Venue 8 Pro 5855 tablet with Dell Wireless 5809e
(Comment 13) I find same issue reproducible on Dell Wireless 5810e
(Telit LN930 with 1620 firmware) with patch from Comment 23.

I also find that detach/attach modem via systemd unit is sufficient,
ModemManager restart seems like not necessary.

Aleksander, please let us know if any additional logs or testing is
required.

Hello!

Thank you for looking into this issue! :)

I tried to build version 1.6.8, but build failed:
https://launchpad.net/~russianneuromancer/+archive/ubuntu/drivers/+build/13571525

It is supposed to work with version 1.6.8 or I need master? (In latter
case I have no idea how to build modemmanager package.)

Did you compile ModemManager with 'systemd' suspend/resume support?
Ideally, MM should detect the suspend/resume events and reprobe the
devices from scratch.

I wonder if the fact that I use "suspend freeze" mode instead of default
"suspend" mode makes a difference?
https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/sleep.conf.d.html

I have to do so because modern hardware implement S0i3 instead of S3, so
default mode will just won't work (tablets and laptops without S3
support will just poweroff or reboot on attempt to go into S3).

> I'll analyze the logs and let you know what I find.

Ok. Just to let you know, I find first unit not reliable enough, so I edited it
a little bit:
Removed "StopWhenUnneeded=yes" and "RemainAfterExit=yes".
Replaced "=-/bin/systemctl" with "=/bin/systemctl".

I believe you misread what the rules in the blogpost are doing :) I
think the rules try to force the device into QMI mode, instead of the
MBIM mode that would be picked up by default. This was a better choice
for the Dell modem at that time because there wasn't support for running
QMI commands over MBIM, and the Dell modem really required the FCC Auth
command; but that is no longer the case, as MM already handles QMI over
MBIM automatically as well as the FCC auth command for the Dell device.

Anyway, in your case it seems the rules didn't work as expected because
you're still in MBIM mode, which is the one I would anyway suggest. I
believe you can remove all the udev rules, as the kernel (or
usb_modeswitch, it depends) should choose the MBIM configuration as
preferred automatically.

That said, could you gather MM and mbim-proxy debug logs? I'd like to
check whether the issue is exactly the same one:

$> sudo systemctl stop ModemManager
$> sudo killall -9 mbim-proxy
$> sudo /usr/libexec/mbim-proxy --verbose > /tmp/mbim-proxy.log 2>&1 &
$> sudo /usr/sbin/ModemManager --debug > /tmp/mm.log 2>&1 &
(and retry reproducing the issue)

Nevermind, I see the suspend/resume is in place in MM so the bug is
still applicable there; I'll analyze the logs and let you know what I

I have same issue on Dell Venue 8 Pro 5855 tablet with Dell Wireless

Please look into attached logs:
4:26 mbim-proxy and ModemManager proxy is started, then tablet was suspended
4:27 wakeup from suspended, connection is not established
4:28 second attempt to connect, also unsuccessful.

mbim-proxy and ModemManager termination and following restart allowed me
to successfully establish connection again.

If my issue is different and I need to fill separate bugreport - please

[Bug 1774950] Re: Suspend fails in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 17.10 (and on Kubuntu 18.04 using kernel 4.14.47)

2018-06-11 Thread Matalak
Here are a few thoughts:

I've tested other Debian-based distributions whose display managers are
Gnome or XFCE, running the 4.15 kernel, and the same problem persists.
Perhaps we should look wider than just solutions for Ubuntu. For
example, Fedora seems to have the same problem, as does Arch Linux (
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/57511 and
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1551262 , respectively). I
just notice that almost all links above are directly related to Ubuntu,
and that could be limiting.

Has anyone looked into the solutions for Spectre and Meltdown? Perhaps
the latest solutions have caused problems with the Intel hardware.

[Bug 1594023] Re: Poweroff or reboot hangs. Laptop won't shutdown. 16.04

2018-06-11 Thread JohnDoe_71Rus
this is a problem with the kernel. Starting with some version. I installed
Lubuntu 18.04 on the usb hdd and checked on the 2 systems. On the desktop intel
turns off and reboots without problems.
On the laptop dell inspiron 1501 there are problems with the reboot and
shutdown. The power does not turn off. But entering hibernate mode turns off
the power normally.
Checked calculate linux 17.12.2 behavior on the laptop is the same, does not
power-off and reboot

[Bug 1776383] [NEW] GRUB error unable to install boot loader

2018-06-11 Thread Ritchey Mulhollem
Public bug reported:

There is a bug in GRUB where it will not write the boot loader to the
disk. It simply says "Fatal Error" and then exits. Further attempts
will result in the same error message.

To fix this error, I can take the drive out and put it into a windows
machine, switch it to Dynamic Disk, then format it. When I place it
back into the original computer, GRUB will install without any problem.

I hope that will provide a clue to someone more knowledgeable as to what
the real problem is.

To reproduce this problem. Get a computer with UEFI boot. In my case
it was a Dell PowerEdge R410. Install OPNsense firewall on it:

https://opnsense.org/

Next, install Ubuntu 18.04 and you will get the GRUB error. It's a
fatal error and you cannot continue!

[Bug 1776381] [NEW] lxc-test-api-reboot will hang with autopkgtest

2018-06-11 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Public bug reported:

Steps:
  1. Deploy Bionic on a bare-metal system.
  2. Enable deb-src, install the autopkgtest package
  3. sudo autopkgtest lxc -- null

Result:
  * The test will hang, a "reboot" lxc container will be created. The last
message on the screen will be:

  * Tried to connect to the "reboot" container with "sudo lxc-console reboot",
but nothing there:
Connected to tty 1
Type to exit the console, to enter Ctrl+a itself
  * If you kill the job and run it again, this time the test will go on (fail
with the lxc-test-api-reboot test, as the container has already been created)

This issue can be reproduced on an amd64 box and a s390x zKVM.

[Bug 1757218] Re: QCA9377 isn't being recognized sometimes

2018-06-11 Thread Leonardo Müller
This kernel version works, but I don't understand why testing a 4.17
version would be relevant on this case, as the first kernel fixed is
4.16-rc5 and, according to the checkout we've done before, the first
good commit should be:

commit 1fdb926974695d3dbc05a429bafa266fdd16510e
Author: Hans de Goede
Date: Tue Feb 20 09:06:18 2018 +0100

Bluetooth: btusb: Use DMI matching for QCA reset_resume quirking

However, this commit alone have not solved the issue. Maybe because
there were many Bluetooth related commits together with this one and the
checkout was unable to detect this detail.

[Bug 1776376] Re: Intel 9462 bluetooth and wifi doesn't work

2018-06-11 Thread AceLan Kao
9462 is a new chip and requires a bunch of patches which are in v4.12+
It's not possible to backport those patches to v4.4 kernel, so please upgrade
your kernel to v4.15 and update to the latest linux-firmware package.

[Bug 1753662] Re: [i40e] LACP bonding start up race conditions

2018-06-11 Thread Nivedita Singhvi
Jeff,

Please do provide your logs and whatever other information you can share
from your error case, any piece of info will help here. I do not yet
have a repro environment myself.

I suspect that most of the changes which seem to help or fix the issue
are simply changing the timing enough to affect the race window, making
it less likely to occur, so are masking the problem rather than fixing
the root cause.

[Bug 1690085]

2018-06-11 Thread oyvinds
> I find myself willing to believe the AMD "indirectly" statement: this is
> related to power supply. My power supply is an EVGA 650GQ, with eco switch
> set on to reduce fan noise. I suspect that if I swapped it for some other
Some want to believe and that's fine but AMD story is and always was bullshit
and here's why: My EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G3 & Corsair RM650i are modern and
C6/"haswell" compliant PSUs. There's plenty of other people with a variety of
new and old and cheap and expensive PSUs who are affected by this TOTAL SCANDAL
bug.

The new Power Supply option in BIOS set to Typical does fix it all
combinations of Ryzen motherboards/CPUs/PSUs I've tried.

The root cause could be a combination of motherboard/CPU/PSU but my
guess is that it's got more to do with motherboard voltage regulators
and less to do with PSUs. Buying a new PSU isn't a viable option anyway,
what are you going do to? buy every single PSU on the market and hope
you stumble upon one that works with the "low current" power supply
option in BIOS after trying 20 that don't? If you sell a computer
monitor that does not work properly on 19 out of 20 graphics cards then
it's not the graphics cards that are to blame, you're selling a
defective product.

The Typical Idle setting is a fine solution if you know about it, so
there's that. Works for me. I do feel sorry for poor noobs who don't
know and pull their hairs for hours before discovering the shocking
truth, though.

[Bug 1774794] Re: btrfs-convert executable is not included in btrfs-progs

2018-06-11 Thread kkm
FWIW, it looks like btrfs-convert is being dropped upstream. I just
compiled mine from source, and it crashed after some heavy churning. The
package description should be changed though (it explicitly mentions
btrfs-convert). Here's a relevant thread:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=854489

referring to the note in
https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Conversion_from_Ext3:

“Warning: As of 4.0 kernels this feature is not often used or well
tested anymore, and there have been some reports that the conversion
doesn't work reliably. Feel free to try it out, but make sure you have
backups.”

My backtrace was different, but also related to btrfs_reserve_extent().
I also attempted ext4 -> btrfs. I'll post the BT but it's hardly
helpful:
