OK, I tried that one and it still exhibited the issue. I'm going to

[Bug 1652091] Re: xargs not contained in initramdisk

2018-07-20 Thread eviljoel
The change that was made to address this bug does not work correctly.
The version of busybox included in the Ubuntu initramfs doesn't include
all the features of busybox included in the Debian initramfs. This lack
of features is still causing the killing of dropbear's child processes
to fail.

You can see the available options of busybox's 'ps' by executing it with
an invalid option. On Ubuntu, you get the following:

(initramfs) /bin/busybox ps -h
ps: invalid option -- 'h'
BusyBox v1.27.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.27.2-2ubuntu3) multi-call binary.

Usage: ps

Show list of processes

w Wide output
l Long output

(initramfs)

If you run the same command on Debian, you get the following:

(initramfs) /bin/busybox ps -h
ps: invalid option -- 'h'
BusyBox v1.22.1 (Debian 1:1.22.0-19+b3) multi-call binary.

Usage: ps [-o COL1,COL2=HEADER] [-T]

Show list of processes

-o COL1,COL2=HEADER Select columns for display
-T Show threads

(initramfs)

It is the missing '-o' option that causes this issue.

I am reopening this bug instead of creating a new bug because scott28
previously pointed out these problems and already provided a more
correct solution. I have included a patch based on his patch created
against the current 'master' version of dropbear.

I don't think this can really be fixed upstream. The two versions of
busybox ps are not compatable. The only reasonable fix I can see is to
add Ubuntu specific code and I suspect the Debian maintainer will be
unwilling to do that. Ubuntu should probably apply this patch before
creating their build.

** Patch added: "Replaces Debian Specific Code with Ubuntu Specific Code"

2018-07-20 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
This keeps happening every two-three times I close then open my laptop's
lid. It means I lose my work, running VMs, etc, about 3 times per work
week.

If there is anything I can do to help solve this bug please let me know,
thanks!

Re: [Bug 1777338] Re: Linux 4.15.0-23 crashes during the boot process with a "Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference" message

2018-07-20 Thread Adam Novak
Thanks!

I have tested this kernel; it doesn't work, so the problem is between
fc8704280f2ada9f61f08a2d5adc0dab169cc207 and
8eca6add0defde203282476d7969a7c13bbd7d91.

I've gotten set up with a kernel build environment; I think I can
finish the git bisect myself, but looking at the commits in that
range, I have no hope of actually fixing the underlying bug myself.
I'm building 3f6a3b035f91a22c0d3bd27630bf61eac9c8cf6c now.

Thanks for working on it, but is there any way you can provide a patch

patch isn't completely compatible with the newer version. Would really
appreciate it!

[Bug 1779438] Re: Cannot resolve names using systemd-resolved stub resolver

2018-07-20 Thread Byron
Ok, thanks for the suggestion there Dimitri.

I ran a wireshark to see what happened when I pinged the hostname which
would inevitably fail, and I got nothing in wireshark. What I think is
happening and makes most sense is that the stub resolver is eating up my
DNS lookup and not forwarding it onto my nameserver. This is why there
is no network traffic for the ping as the resolve just fails inside the
stub resolver.

Is the nsswitch.conf a clue here?

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns

Does that mean that if there is not hostname found, it returns and not
forwards to dns?

After the failed wireshark, I switched the /etc/resolv.conf to not point
to the stub-resolv.conf and all is well again.

I would still like to help fix this issue though.

I'm not sure what Apport automatic robot is doing, but the robot removed

[Bug 1772998] Re: pcsd runaway processes use 100% CPU

2018-07-20 Thread Casey & Gina
Well, in case anybody ever looks at this bug, it may be a bug in the
Ruby interpreter. This is fixed in Debian - https://bugs.debian.org
/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=876377

It would be great to get this fix backported to Ubuntu 16, as otherwise
pcs is pretty much unusable.

I've tried installing the PCS 0.9.164 .deb from Ubuntu 18 on Ubuntu 16,

[Bug 1781038] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2018-07-20 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From s...@us.ibm.com 2018-07-20 19:03 EDT---
Looking though the qemu logs, I'm not seeing anything obvious, though I will
have a colleague look at them also on Monday. I see that even "some time later"
we have a system with 512gb of RAM, the usual default 5% in CMA (25gb) and less
than 4gb free in the CMA. I'm not sure how to see what's using up the CMA, so
I'll ask about that, also.

[Bug 1782854] Re: CRITICAL BUG IN initramfs-tools 0.131ubuntu1: Failed to execute /init (error -13)

The other computer (main one I'm writing from) got the same message
after update to 0.131ubuntu1, so I booted with the older kernel (4.15),
downgraded initramfs-tools, initramfs-tools-bin and initramfs-tools-core
to 0.130ubuntu10 and successfully rebooted with the new kernel. I saved
the broken and working initrd.img-4.17.0-5-generic images. Please advise
if and where to upload them (27MB each).

[Bug 1677335] Re: Outgoing mail is always windows-1252 encoded by default

2018-07-20 Thread Mark Sapiro
This should probably be status: Won't Fix.

Mozilla answered the above bug report with a reference to
<-https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1469335#c6> which cites
 as an authoritative reference saying
windows-1252 is the preferred name for iso-8859-1. latin1, etc., and
future releases will remove iso-8859-1 as a choice for 'western'
encoding.

[Bug 1775672] Re: virtualbox-dkms installation hangs in 18.04 (with secure boot)

2018-07-20 Thread Marco van Zwetselaar
The problem is that the DKMS hook in virtualbox-dkms starts a whiptail
dialog explaining that a new signing key will be enrolled in the MOK
database, but this dialog does not get displayed, which is why the
system appears to hang.

Below is the output of 'pstree' showing the stack of commands and the
whiptail content.

Secondary issue (with DKMS): I have a signing key in the MOK database
already (like commenter #4), with which I have always used signed the
vbox drivers, so I do not want to enrol a _new_ signing key. So even if
I would see the dialog, it does not present the appropriate option.

I have tried this with aptitude, apt, dpkg --configure, both inside and
outside of a 'screen' session (to make sure I was on a plain console),
but the dialog does not show up in any of these cases.

This is the pstree output:

[Bug 1737750] Re: nvidia-graphics-drivers-304 304.137-0ubuntu2 ADT test failure with linux 4.15.0-1.2 [error: implicit declaration of function ‘init_timer’]

2018-07-20 Thread Benchrest
I think this bug describes my failure. I am using Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3 w
NVIDIA-340.104
Using the latest kernel at the time, 4.15.0-24 cinnamon crashes at boot. Also
with 4.15.0-20, the kernel that comes with LM 19 and Ubuntu 18.04 I understand.
I just tried the new 4.15.0-29 and have the same failure. I get a message in
xorg.log that the nvidia driver failed to load, see the syslog for more error
messages, but I find nothing there.

Works ok if I use the Nouveau driver or revert back to 4.13.0-45 and use
the nvidia-340 driver. I am hesitant to go to the new LM 19 for this
problem.

I am seeing conflicting information. The kernel inadvertently dropped
support for nvidia-340 and will be fixed or support for nvidia-340 is
being dropped permanently.

Can anyone comment on if this problem will be fixed or do I need to make other
plans? Not trying to rush a fix just want to know if I wait if something will
happen.

[Bug 1779863] Re: Ubuntu nodejs package isn't ABI compatible with mainline nodejs.

2018-07-20 Thread Nicolas Noble
Also if you want to reproduce it, you simply need to npm install grpc on
Ubuntu using Ubuntu's nodejs. Loading and using gRPC (I can build a
quick nodejs demo project if you want) will then fail with the symbol
mismatch I described initially.

Or you can also use the reproduction case I linked initially:
https://github.com/nicolasnoble/openssl-nodejs-ubuntu-demo

If you build this extension using the nodejs 8 available at
https://nodejs.org/dist/latest-v8.x/ and then try to use the code in
Ubuntu's nodejs, it'll fail. One way to quickly try this is to have two
users on a single system. One user is using nvm to install node 8. That
first user builds the demo code. Then the second user uses the system's
node to run it. This will demonstrate the failure.

way to this page as a fix.

[Bug 1779863] Re: Ubuntu nodejs package isn't ABI compatible with mainline nodejs.

2018-07-20 Thread Nicolas Noble
I've created an issue on nodejs' tracker to discuss this also:
https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/21897

Let me rephrase what you just said a bit, because I think you're getting
it a bit incorrectly.

People are distributing binaries through npm, and these binaries are
expected to work directly when being loaded inside the nodejs runtime
because there are ABI contracts from the nodejs runtime.

These contracts include exposing OpenSSL symbols. More specifically,
NodeJS extensions aren't supposed to link against OpenSSL directly. They
get OpenSSL's symbols transitively through the NodeJS binary. This is
also true for zlib and libuv. Ubuntu (transitively from Debian) is
shipping a version of the NodeJS runtime that breaks these ABI contracts
by linking in OpenSSL 1.1 instead of 1.0. More specifically, the symbols
and ABI exposed from NodeJS 8.x are supposed to be that of OpenSSL 1.0,
but since your runtime is linked against 1.1, it exposes this ABI
instead, which transitively breaks native modules that are expecting the
1.0 ABI of OpenSSL.

As soon as the samba protocol newer NT1 (e.g. SMB2) is used, then dolphin

You can force the usage of NT1 via:
- Samba < 4.7

You can force the usage of SMB2 or SMB3 via:
- Samba >= 4.7
or adding the extra file ~/.smb/smb.conf

client max protocol = SMB3

[Bug 1782849] [NEW] Release Upgrader unable to determine upgrade 17.10 -> 18.04

2018-07-20 Thread Laurie
Public bug reported:

I tried running the upgrade, and it failed with this error. I saw the
other bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-
upgrader/+bug/1767436 that seemed to be a related issue, however I went
back and manually disabled any third-party repos I had setup in the
sources list and tried again, to no avail. I got the same exact error
after disabling those repos.

I was also previously using the
https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers but I used
`ppa-purge` to remove this before attempting the upgrade, as I've heard
that it can cause a broken machine if not removed first.

[Bug 1779863] Re: Ubuntu nodejs package isn't ABI compatible with mainline nodejs.

2018-07-20 Thread Dan Streetman
I think I don't quite understand the use case fully - the problem here
is some binary packages, provided not by Ubuntu but through NPM, aren't
binary-compatible with nodejs due to openssl lib ABI differences with
the NPM-built binary? If you can provide a bit more detail on this,
maybe with a specific example or way to reproduce seeing the error, it
would help a lot.

Also for bionic, the openssl1.0 version is available:

$ sudo apt install openssl1.0 libssl1.0.0

$ apt-cache policy libssl1.0.0
libssl1.0.0:
  Installed: 1.0.2n-1ubuntu5.1
  Candidate: 1.0.2n-1ubuntu5.1
  Version table:
 *** 1.0.2n-1ubuntu5.1 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-updates/main amd64
Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-security/main amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1.0.2n-1ubuntu5 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages

Is the issue here that nodejs is statically built with the newer openssl
lib?

[Bug 1778844] Re: ISST-LTE:PNV:Ubuntu180401:Witherspoon:woo: After triggering crash, kdump is not working and system enters into initramfs state

2018-07-20 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
I have managed to test kdump and initramfs with MODULES=dep on an
emulated nvme, using qemu. Both worked just fine. The sysfs tree seems
reasonable too, in respect to how initramfs finds the necessary modules.

So, I would really need the specific details on that failure case, that
is, the sysfs tree and all the rest I requested in the previous message.

Thank you.
Cascardo.

[Bug 1782843] [NEW] Error spam when pulseaudio is not active

2018-07-20 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Public bug reported:

This concerns xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin 0.4.1-0ubuntu1 in Ubuntu
18.04/bionic.

In an Xfce desktop session, when this package is installed, and
Pulseaudio is not active, I see a steady procession of these messages in
~/.xsession-errors:

(wrapper-2.0:2036): pulseaudio-plugin-WARNING **: 17:00:20.688: Disconected
from the PulseAudio server. Attempting to reconnect in 5 seconds.

seconds.

(wrapper-2.0:2036): pulseaudio-plugin-WARNING **: 17:00:35.688:
pa_context_connect() failed: Access denied

If the plugin is going to poll for Pulseaudio, it should print a warning
at most once. An alternative reasonable behavior could be to exit
altogether (since a PA volume control is useless without PA).

[Bug 1769819] Re: [nvidia] Xorg crashes after system sleep / wakeup, in libwfb.so+25597 → nvidia_drv.so+60a46c → [heap]+d35cb0

2018-07-20 Thread Alan Jenkins via ubuntu-bugs
CurrentDmesg.txt:

[58189.152330] PM: suspend exit
[58189.162027] Read-error on swap-device (253:0:361608)
[58189.167038] Read-error on swap-device (253:0:361672)

"People die when they are killed". Specifically "Read-error on swap-
device" kills you with SIGBUS. Mystery solved.

I really expect if you looked at the crash, you would notice it is
SIGBUS, with si_code == BUS_ADRERR (2).  This means a read error when
trying to load a page of virtual memory back in from swap or from the
filesystem.

There's a common bug which matches this, so please read #1776887
"Critical upstream bugfix missing in Ubuntu 18.04 - frequent Xorg crash after
suspend".

I'm sure this applies to at least some users who marked themselves as
affected, or some duplicates of this bug. This particular kernel log
includes some other errors as well though, so I can't rule out that they
also have some relation.

[Bug 1782835] Re: d-i step "Configure the keyboard" fails

2018-07-20 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
This might be related to the fix of bug #1762952, whose purpose is to
not accomplish keyboard configuration in connection with an upgrade of
the keyboard-configuration package.

The complaint seems to be "dpkg-query: not found", and the dpkg-query
command is indeed used in the pending change. Is d-i run in an
environment where dpkg is not present?
