[Bug 1852257] Re: s390/dasd: reduce the default queue depth and nr of hardware queues

2019-11-14 Thread Frank Heimes
** Description changed:

+ SRU Justification:
+ ==
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ * On s390x systems with a small memory footprint, but large amounts of
+ DASD disks,
+
+ * the memory can get depleted (even during installation) which can
+ eventually lead to a situation where the OOM kicks in (followed by even
+ more problems).
+
+ * Starting with kernel 4.18 the patch below leads to 90% memory
+ consumption savings per active DASD device.
+
+ * The below backport is needed to fix this and get the improvement into
+ bionic's kernel 4.15.
+
+ [Fix]
+
+ * 3284da34a87ab7a527a593f89bbdaf6debe9e713 3284da3 "s390/dasd: reduce
+ the default queue depth and nr of hardware queues"
+
+ * Backport:
+
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1852257/+attachment/5304830/+files/0001-s390
+ -dasd-reduce-the-default-queue-depth-and-nr-of-h.patch
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Configure a s390x system (z/VM guest or LPAR) with only a bit RAM, but
+ lot's of DASDs devices.
+
+ * Now gradually enable more and more DASDs and monitor the memory usage
+ (be sure to exclude shared memory and cache).
+
+ * One can notice a difference in mem usage of about 10:1 per activated
+ DASD comparing the current stock 4.15 kernel with a patches kernel 4.15.
+
+ * With about less than 1GB memory and 40+ DASD devices one may start to
+ run into an OOM situation w(o the patch.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * The regression potential can be considered as moderate, since:
+
+ * this is purely s390x specific
+
+ * it again only affects DASD disk storage (no zFCP/SCSI disk storage)
+
+ * and it's again only limited to smaller systems (so more z/VM guests
+ rather than LPARs).
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ * A cherry-pick to 4.15 wasn't clean (problem in one line), hence the
+ backport, which applied, compiled and worked fine.
+
+ __
+
This fix is already available with Ubuntu 18.10, but need also be
integrated into Ubuntu 18.04 LTS kernel (4.15).

- This is available git-commit:
+ This is available git-commit:
  https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/3284da34a87a

  Backport information will be provided.

[Bug 1852554] Re: Please remove python-motor from focal

2019-11-14 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
Ok, thinking about it a bit and looking at the upstream issue - I think
I don't like the idea of removing the package from Ubuntu for now. I am
not super experienced with package removal policies, but here a package
hint seems to be more fitting instead. Yes, current version of python-
motor might not work with 3.8, but upstream seems to be active so the
issue should be addressed relatively soon. The package might not be very
popular, but it was in Ubuntu since bionic, so I'd not want to remove it
without a strong reason. But maybe I'm just too soft, I don't know.

Anyway, for now I'll hint the failure. We can re-visit the removal idea
if we see that upstream is not willing to keep the package up-to-date.

[Bug 1852332] Re: Bionic builds can't build core18 images

2019-11-14 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
Ok, this finally seems to be working. I ran a bionic livefs ubuntu-core
build with -proposed enabled and now I can confirm that the build pulled
in the core18 assertion and built a core18 image in the end:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/451484208
/buildlog_ubuntu_bionic_amd64_ubuntu-core_BUILDING.txt.gz

(as seen in the logs, livecd-rootfs 2.525.35 was used)

[Bug 1837088] Re: Generate HyperV Image Gallery Builds in Bionic and Disco

2019-11-14 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
Note: normally we'd require testing the exact packages that are in
-proposed to consider the verification valid, but livecd-rootfs is a
very special cake. Since livecd-rootfs is just a bunch of scripts that
are actually the same as per the git branch, in this case such a
verification per git-branch is enough (I have actually made sure that
the package contents are the same).

[Bug 1851349] Re: Xorg freeze

2019-11-14 Thread Pål Bergström
Problem is still present. Happened when running ClamAV, that took up a
lot of memory so that's one thing to change but I had the same setup in
19.04. Can also appear in FireFox (70.0.1, used a lot) when using
Twitter. Perhaps a js running away? Will take a closer look in the
console next time. I also had VSCode open (runs js right?). I'm not an
expert but something around memory and multitasking is wrong in 19.10
that wasn't there in 19.04.

Instead of posting all of journalctl what should I look for? Thanks.

This be one reason why Raspbian uses three different kernels (one for
0/B+, one for 2B/3B/3B+, one for 4B).

[Bug 1159961] Re: Guake vague command line arguments

2019-11-14 Thread Robert Matusewicz
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all
reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since
that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some
of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently
supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly
upload the updated logs by running only once:
apport-collect 1159961

and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

bo-46.ucode", which has been landed in linux-firmware/bionic in bug
1852512 and will be released soon.

Then BinLi is asking for SRU "iwlwifi-9000-pu-b0-jf-b0-43.ucode", which
has been there since version 1.173.9.

Could you have an update to the latest linux-firmware version, and have
a check if WiFi is still not functioning?

Please also check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates for SRU
criteria and procedure for more info.

There is no way to disable ssl compression in mod_ssl even though
openssl has "SSL_OP_NO_COMPRESSION" which can be enabled via
SSL_CTX_set_options since 1.0.0. For scalability reasons it would be
required that ssl compression can be turned off in mod_ssl. I would even
suggest to turn it off by default because mod_deflate is doing a much
better job and can be better tuned by file types etc.

I've created a patch which adds the parameter SSLCompession which can be

This patch is against 2.2 but it also applies to 2.4 with some offsets.

CRIME attack (https://threatpost.com/en_us/blogs/crime-attack-uses-

[Bug 1852510] Re: IO errors when writing large amounts of data to USB storage in eoan on RPI

2019-11-14 Thread Hui Wang
I reproduced this problem on the rpi3B+ and rpi2Bv1.1 with armhf kernel.

This problem is introduced by enabling two kernel configs for arm32
kernel, they are HIGHMEM and VMSPLIT_3G.

We need to use a single arm32 kernel to support rpi2/3/4, while rpi4 has
1G/2G/4G ram, to support 2G and 4G ram, we have to enable HIGHMEM and
VMSPLIT_3G, otherwise we can't get 2G/4G memory in the system.

The upstream kernel of https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux.git also has
this issue.

some explanation:
These two configs are specific to 32bit kernel, so we can't reproduce this
issue on arm64 kernel.
The usb ports on rpi4 are routed to xhci host controller instead of dwc_otg
host controller, so we can't reproduce this issue on rpi4 even with armhf
kernel.
On rpi3A+ board, there are only 512M physical memory, there is no ram to map to
highmemory region, so we can't reproduce this problem on rpi3A+.

I guess the problem is in the dwc_otg usb host driver, it depends on dma
to work, but dma gets a highmem buffer then it can't work normally
anymore. I will report this issue to rpi community and try a find a fix
asap.

so far, the workaround is to set total_mem=512 in the config.txt for
rpi2/3 working with 32bit kernel , then there is no memory mapped to
highmem region.

[Bug 1851123] Re: Ubuntu 19.10 and focal live cloned create and mount casper-rw partition

2019-11-14 Thread sudodus
I tested the bugfix with the Xubuntu Focal daily iso file in BIOS mode
using the boot option 'toram', and it works :-)

See the attached screenshot: A casper-rw was not mounted; it was not
even created.

After that I rebooted without any extra boot option. The casper-rw
partition was created and mounted to /var/crash and /var/log and
/var/log was busy, could not be unmounted. 'As usual' with this new
feature.

Then I rebooted using the boot option 'toram', and it works, also when
there is a casper-rw partition. It is not mounted :-)

I tested also with the boot option 'persistent' works as expected (with
and without 'toram') and did some basic checking in UEFI mode too.
Everything seems to work as expected.

Thank you Michael :-)

-o-

Olivier Robert raised the issue concerning what should be the default.
Maybe it can be discussed here, maybe there should be another forum for
that discussion, for example a new bug report or the Ubuntu Forums.

[Bug 1773114] Re: Cannot copy file using 'cp' on a gvfs mount

2019-11-14 Thread Erik W. Rasmussen
This error persists in 18.04.3, gvfs version: 1.36.1-0ubuntu1.3.3
I tried to use gcp instead of cp but the result is the same, so this is an gvfs
error.

But actually most of the files are copied (both using cp or gcp). So for
example an gz-file is copied and it is possible to unpack it, but zgrep
returns "unexpected end of file".

Note: By using smbclient I can retrieve the files without errors.

[Bug 1805691] Re: [MIR] placement

2019-11-14 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
I think we were already fine because:
- security said this code was already acked when it was part of nova -> ack
- package looked ok and had new Dependencies over what nova had before
- we were afraid of duplication, but that is resolved now.

@Corey I think we are good with this already.

MIR Team ack, feel free to pull this in for Focal.

[Bug 1851230] Re: missing firmware files from oem image

2019-11-14 Thread Bin Li
Talked with Aaron Ma last week, he said that we need a reasonable cause
to add a new firmware, such as without the firmware the wifi couldn't
work, if the applications couldn't work, it's very hard to let the
kernel team to add it. Thanks!
