2020-01-31 Thread Chris Guiver
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.

I suspect your issues maybe related to issues on your system, and not a
software bug. You may want to 'fsck' your file system.

[ 429.038199] EXT4-fs error (device sda2): ext4_generic_delete_entry:2338:

I believe a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu (this bug report can be converted
to a question (which is aimed at support)). You can also find help with
your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at

[Bug 1861530] Re: update-secureboot-policy runs at startup and burns CPU

2020-01-31 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1861530/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1861533] Re: fan control goes full speed after sleep

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1861533/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1861537] Re: installer crashes when it is "creating partitions" or "calculating files to skip copying"

2020-01-31 Thread Chris
I downloaded another ISO via torrent again, and ran the "check disk for
errors" test (or was it check integrity? i cant remember now) and it
passed. Well, it crashed again at the same spot, and so I went and found
the md5sum for the ISO I downloaded and it didn't match.

Thanks for looking into this. I'll re download it again, until I get one
that matches, and after one does I'll run the installer again and see if
it crashes. If it does, I'll keep re writing it and running the verify
test and trying again.

[Bug 1861537] Re: installer crashes when it is "creating partitions" or "calculating files to skip copying"

2020-01-31 Thread Chris Guiver
The problem was your install media was corrupted, ie. either an
incorrect ISO was downloaded (md5sum or sda256sum wasn't performed to
check it's integrity), or the write to install media failed (thus it
wrote a corrupted or incorrect data) or the device was faulty and thus
didn't store the correct data on it.

The media you are installing to was not the problem, your installation
media where used to 'boot' was invalid which would have been detected
with this step
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck where
CD is whatever installation media you use, be it hdd/ssd/thumb-drive/dvd
or CD).

The prior (ISO) checksum step ensures the CDIntegrityCheck step is valid
& not giving false-reports, but in my experience it's the write to media
that usually fails (esp. on thumb-drives).

have checked the integrity of the USB flash drive, and all seems well there,
and I have also checked the integrity of my drive that I am installing to
(works fine of course, and have check nvnme-cli just to read some of the stats).

The only thing that I would think that it would be, is that the ISO is bad
somehow... but I actually re-downloaded it when I did, because of this same
error, thinking that downloading a new iso would work.

This same error occurs when I try to install KDE Neon, Kubuntu and
Xubuntu, but not vanilla Ubuntu.

Just to get the ISO out of the question, I will download a new one,
using torrents and retry, and then come back.

hah, bingo, the default kernel package for VMs doesn't have nd_pmem or
nd_btt. I had to install linux-modules-extra-5.4.0-12-generic.

Now it works:
ubuntu@focal-nvdimm:~$ sudo ndctl create-namespace
{
  "dev":"namespace1.0",
  "mode":"fsdax",
  "map":"dev",
  "size":"1006.00 MiB (1054.87 MB)",

}

Thanks a lot, Dan!

[Bug 1861537] Re: installer crashes when it is "creating partitions" or "calculating files to skip copying"

2020-01-31 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This package failure looks like it was caused by bad ISO download,
corrupted install media, or device failure. eg. look in the logs and
you'll see messages like these :-

Feb 1 00:06:48 xubuntu kernel: [ 343.040592] SQUASHFS error: zlib
decompression failed, data probably corrupt
Feb 1 00:06:48 xubuntu kernel: [ 343.040596] SQUASHFS error:
squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x1121749

Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be
a useful bug report so I am closing it, as it appears to be a bad ISO or
faulty device (inc. bad write-to-device). If you believe I'm in error,
please leave a comment explaining why and change the status back to
'New'. I suggest you verify your ISO download, and use the 'check disc
for defects' option to validate your media before install to ensure a
good download & write.

Possibly useful : https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-how-to-
verify-ubuntu#0 and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck (where
CD refers to your install media, be it CD, DVD, HDD, SSD, thumb-drive
etc)

[Bug 1861540] [NEW] typo in man page

2020-01-31 Thread C de-Avillez
Public bug reported:

"respectively" is wrongly spelled:

-l Used to specify that nc should listen for an incoming
connection rather than initiate a connection to a remote host. The
destination and port to listen on can be specified either as non-
optional arguments, or with options -s and -p *respctively*.

This is corrected on 19.10 onwards at least; but given this is on an LTS
release, opening the bug.

Found and reported by "sabrina" via email.

[Bug 1861537] [NEW] installer crashes when it is "creating partitions" or "calculating files to skip copying"

2020-01-31 Thread Chris
Public bug reported:

I believe that the installer crashes at the points listed in the title,
but I cannot be for sure. But those are the things that it is saying at
the time it crashes.

If it is not listed, I am trying to install to a single NVMe drive, and
it is the only one. I am able to install Ubuntu (vanilla), but Xubuntu
and Kubuntu and KDE Neon do this same exact thing, with the same exact
error.

[Bug 1861446] Re: on focal 'ubuntu-bug linux' doesn't automatically collect kernel artifacts

2020-01-31 Thread Brian Murray
This is actually because the linux source package doesn't reference
5.4.0-12 rather 5.4.0-9.

See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux and 'apt-cache showsrc
linux'.

[Bug 1861534] [NEW] Spamassassin needs updated to 3.4.4 to reflect security fixes

2020-01-31 Thread chris pollock
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
Release:18.04

apt-cache policy spamassassin
spamassassin:
  Installed: 3.4.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.2
  Candidate: 3.4.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.2

The current version of Spamassassin is 3.4.2, the newest version, 3.4.4
fixes two security issues:

CVE-2020-1930
A command execution issue was found in Apache SpamAssassin prior to 3.4.3.
Carefully crafted nefarious rule configuration (.cf) files can be configured to
run system commands similar to CVE-2018-11805. With this bug unpatched,
exploits can be injected in a number of scenarios including the same privileges
as spamd is run which may be elevated though doing so remotely is difficult. In
addition to upgrading to SA 3.4.4, we again recommend that users should only
use update channels or 3rd party .cf files from trusted places. If you cannot
upgrade, do not use 3rd party rulesets, do not use sa-compile and do not run
spamd as an account with elevated privileges.

CVE-2020-1931
A command execution issue was found in Apache SpamAssassin prior to 3.4.3.
Carefully crafted nefarious Configuration (.cf) files can be configured to run
system commands similar to CVE-2018-11805. This issue is less stealthy and
attempts to exploit the issue will throw warnings. Thanks to Damian Lukowski at
credativ for reporting the issue ethically. With this bug unpatched, exploits
can be injected in a number of scenarios though doing so remotely is difficult.
In addition to upgrading to SA 3.4.4, we again recommend that users should only
use update channels or 3rd party .cf files from trusted places.

Request that Spamassassin be updated to the latest version, 3.4.4, as
soon as possible.

[Bug 1860587] Re: multipath -ll doesn't discover down all paths on Emulex hosts

2020-01-31 Thread Mauricio Faria de Oliveira
Jennifer,

It's possible to script something that doesn't touch the multipath
devices in use (e.g., root filesystem on FC/multipath.)

Please run this command and upload the generated sosreport tarball.
Then I can check which/how devices are being used and skip them.

$ sudo sosreport --case-id lp1860587 --batch --only-plugins
block,boot,devicemapper,devices,filesys,grub2,kernel,lvm2,multipath,pci

Thanks,
Mauricio

[Bug 1861531] Re: after update laptop was unable to boot due to some secure boot problem

2020-01-31 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I see no evidence of you trying to perform a release-upgrade (ie. bump
yourself to a later release of Ubuntu) which is the purpose of the
ubuntu-release-upgrader package. Thus the package change. If I'm wrong,
please correct me via comment.

When you filed the bug it tried to grab information about your upgrade
from 18.04 to a later release, and not about your grub.

Please execute the following command only once, as it will automatically
gather debugging information better suited to your I believe 'grub'
issue, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1861531

Thank you for your time, and helping make Ubuntu better.

[Bug 1861533] [NEW] fan control goes full speed after sleep

2020-01-31 Thread Daniel Near
Public bug reported:

I have Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS on a 2011 Imac 27.5. The hard drive was replaced on
this machine immediately prior to installing Ubuntu as the original had a
faulty bearing. When I first boot the machine and use it, the fans all seem to
run smoothly, varying speed depending on the processor load. But if the
machine sits a while or I lock it (Command-L) then at some random interval
after the screen goes dark, the HDD and CPU fans seem to run higher than
necessary and excessively loud. They no longer slow down to normal speed
unless I do a complete shut-down and power back on.
I've tried adding MacFanctld and even telling it to bypass various sensor
readings under watch sensors that seem to give odd/invalid temperatures. but
that seems to have no effect on the problem. (TH0O and TH1O both seem to sit
around 0 to 9C when it's in a 21C room, TL2V, TLAV, ST2P, TS2V and sometimes
TS2P read -128 or +128C) all the cores are running at 33-36C.

[Bug 1853638] Re: BCM57416 NetXtreme-E Dual-Media 10G RDMA Ethernet device seems to be dropping data

2020-01-31 Thread Edwin Peer
I don't think bnxt_en exposes the disable_tpa parameter. Be that as it
may, I think the tpa_aborts may be a red herring. TPA aggregates TCP
flows and you are seeing the issue with ICMP.

In which direction(s) of traffic flow do you see the losses?

[Bug 1827501] Re: keyboard layout different changes during installation set-up and boot for de-encrypting unencrypting hard drive

2020-01-31 Thread Walter Lapchynski
The reason this works in MATE (and really everywhere that's not Lubuntu)
is because they don't actually have a fully encrypted system. They're
using LVM to do the decryption after GRUB boots, i.e. /boot is not
encrypted. Calamares and how we have it set up needs to have LUKS
decrypted before getting GRUB going, essentially, because /boot is
encrypted. From a security standpoint, this is better. From a user
experience standpoint, it's a little unfortunate.

Without having some fancy GRUB images that would affect the entirety of
the Ubuntu landscape (and perhaps conflict with other design goals),
there's not clearly a good solution to this. Perhaps maybe having LUKS
be a little more verbose? I'm not sure Calamares can fix this, though I
have a related upstream bug linked.

[Bug 1842492] Re: Device disconnects from Ubuntu when I send ebook via Calibre

Same issue here. Different Kindle models.
Can confirm that this is a calibre on Ubuntu issue.
calibre:3.21.0+dfsg-1build1
Ubuntu:18.04.3 LTS

Verified by testing with:
1. 2 different Ubuntu machines, same USB cables, same set of Kindles - same
problem manifests itself
2. A different Arch Linux machine, calibre 4.9.1-1, same USB cables, same set
of Kindles - no problem at all.

[Bug 1861530] [NEW] update-secureboot-policy runs at startup and burns CPU

2020-01-31 Thread Jacob Cram
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 on a lenovo Thinkpad T490s. I enabled full
disk encryption when I installed Ubuntu. I found that the computer ran
hot and that a process was always running and using 50% of the available
CPU, presumably taking one core. That process was

`/usr/bin/perl -w /usr/share/debconf/frontend /usr/sbin/update-
secureboot-policy --enroll-key`

This process appears to be the same as the one described in this stack
exchange post

https://superuser.com/questions/1493050/update-secureboot-policy-enroll-
key-running-on-every-new-startup-eating-reso

I found that, as suggested by user931000 I could disable Secure Boot in
UEFI settings to fix the behavior. I am not sure if this poses any
security risk however, and find that secure boot has a way of turning
itself on, at least with updates that I installed today on 31 January
2020. I think this is a bug and that CPU hogging processes should not
run every time out of the box.

This issue might be related to this other issue, for which a fix is apparently
released, but which doesn't appear to be helping in my case.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shim-signed/+bug/1673817

1) Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
2) Don't know the relevant package
3) I expect that Ubuntu should start up and run without a process burning all
of the CPU, even if I enable disk encryption, and even if secureboot is enabled.
4) I have to choose between having a CPU hogging process turn on every time,
turning off Secure Boot (while continuing to turn it off when updates re-turn
off secure boot) and not encrypting my hard drive.

[Bug 1861521] Re: [FOCAL][REGRESSION] HP EliteBook 840 G5 screen brightness cannot be controlled

2020-01-31 Thread Tyler Hicks
I rebooted into Eoan's 5.3.0-29.31 kernel, with Focal's userspace, and
verified that the screen brightness is still adjustable under that
kernel. Additionally, it is worth noting that I saw the same "hp_wmi:
Unknown event_id" warnings mentioned in comment 2 so they probably don't
have anything to do with this bug.

Re: [Bug 1854982] Re: Lost compatibilty for backup between Ubuntu 19.10 and FreeBSD 12.0

2020-01-31 Thread BertN45
The system uses xattr=sa, but I did not set it myself. Like you can see
in the annex, it has been inherited from rpool everywhere and it has
been set by the installer.

I annexed the properties
- Home of Ubuntu, which properties I did not touch at all (except
canmount) and
- my main dataset with my VMs (rpool/vms/Vbox), where I only changed
its dnodesize and snapdir.

The last one (rpool/vms/Vbox) I backup weekly to FreeBSD 12.1.
For my last try-outs I did use the Home directory of Ubuntu and that
one failed.

The only significant difference, I notice between the two datasets, is
dnodesize. I made the .zfs folder visible this year to restore a VM.

Remark: I use the experimental Ubuntu install with Root on ZFS, but I
also have an ext4 installation on the PC, so I dual boot. Kind of last
resort for the experimental install. In say October and November to be
able to update ZFS on the ext4 installation, I had to change canmount
during the update, but I think that bug has been solved. Canmount is
back at its default.
