[Bug 1867440] [NEW] touchpad not recognized

2020-03-14 Thread Clara Schier
Public bug reported:

Laptop model: xiaomi mi notebook air 12.5 m3-7y30
Touchpad: Synaptics
Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 4.15.0-88.88-generic 4.15.18
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
Release:18.04

Problem appeared ~2 months ago

Touchpad worked fine for 2 years, now suddenly not anymore. No sign of
activity. Touchpad and mouse usage does not activate anything on the
computer screen. I can't find help on how to restore the previous state,
how to get the touchpad working again.

when filing cmd command xinput list, synaptics touchpad and/or mouse are
NOT displayed. command "cat /proc/bus/input/devices" also does not show
a touchpad device.

[Bug 1867406] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 Dock/Taskbar icons

2020-03-14 Thread Manfred Hampl
My experience with that matter and how to reproduce:

Ubuntu 20.04 (development) installed.

Ubuntu dock bar at the left (or right):
You can easily re-arrange the icons by dragging one of them up or down with
your mouse and pressed left mouse button.
When hovering between two icons, they slide up and down to create space for
dropping the icon that you want to move.

Now relocate the dock bar to the bottom edge of the screen with
Settings - appearance - position of the dock: bottom

Now when attempting to move an icon, the other icons do not leave space
for dropping the moving icon, but they move somewhat in groups.

[Bug 966480] Re: The prompt asking for media removal is not shown at the end of the installation

2020-03-14 Thread MarkF
I've been seeing this for the past 4-6 days. I've also noticed that the
new media check (during startup) doesn't appear on the screen. It seemed
to me the shutdown msg becoming unseen happened at the same time the
media check became unseen.

In both cases, what I see is my bios's splash screen. It's like that's
being invoked and kept on the screen. (I've seen this on an old Toshiba,
and a new Acer.).

[Bug 1867447] [NEW] qemu-kvm crashes early during boot on Intel Merom CPU

2020-03-14 Thread Marc D.
Public bug reported:

Package: seabios
Version: 1.13.0-1

In a freshly installed (approx. 7 days ago), fully updated focal system
on x86_64, I tried to run a simple KVM VM with qemu-kvm, seabios and
configured by libvirt. It contained an approx. 7 days old ubuntu-server
install ISO for Ubuntu focal and a LV.

When starting the VM, it immediately goes into paused state. The log
reveals that it has crashed:

KVM internal error. Suberror: 1
emulation failure

The host contains an Intel Merom CPU (mobile successor of Intel Conroe).
Libvirt's attempt at guest CPU configuration resulted in:

-cpu Conroe,vme=on,vmx=on,cx16=on,x2apic=on,tsc-
deadline=on,hypervisor=on,arat=on,tsc-adjust=on,arch-capabilities=on
,skip-l1dfl-vmentry=on

No attempt at reconfiguring the guest CPU was successful.

I noticed, however, that the same software could boot the VM on a
different Computer with a Sandy Bridge CPU, that was modeled by libvirt
as:

-cpu SandyBridge-IBRS,vme=on,vmx=on,pcid=on,hypervisor=on,arat=on,tsc-
adjust=on,umip=on,md-clear=on,stibp=on,arch-
capabilities=on,ssbd=on,xsaveopt=on,ibpb=on,amd-ssbd=on,skip-l1dfl-
vmentry=on

Also, with version 1.12.0-1 of seabios from Ubuntu eoan, the VM boots
fine on the Merom CPU.

[Bug 966480] Re: The prompt asking for media removal is not shown at the end of the installation

2020-03-14 Thread MarkF
This may be related. I've noticed the past few days that the Ubuntu
desktop daily image is being generated even though nothing has changed.
For example, today the QA Tracker says 03-14 is available. But, zsynch
says no data is downloaded (compared to the last one I had). When I run:
strings focal-desktop-amd64.iso | grep "Ubuntu 20.04" it shows the ISO
is still 03-09.

That's about when I noticed something with startup and shutdown changed
(the media-check msgs are hidden, as is the "press ENTER" message). I
think we're testing the same ISO every day.

Yesterday the QA tracker's date was 0313.4 (appearing to have been
regenerated 4 times?). But, it took was unchanged from the last one. So,
something funny is happening in this regard. And, it seems to have begun
about the same time as what Bernard reported.

[Bug 1867453] [NEW] Wifi password prompt does not put cursor in text field.

2020-03-14 Thread MarkF
Public bug reported:

Testing 20.04 daily image for Ubuntu-Budgie. I've seen this with every
daily I've tested. Click the wifi icon on the task tray. A window opens
to accept the access-point's password. The user starts typing, and
realizes nothing's happening because the cursor is somewhere else. You
have to click into that field (then start typing again).

All the other *buntu desktops open the password window with the cursor
in the field, ready to accept keyboard input. So, I'm thinking it's
appropriate to call this a bug. Perhaps low-priority.

PS: I couldn't determine the package this should be reported for. Right
clicking on the wifi icon doesn't show any details. I think the
interface is supposed to be like a mac, and I'm not familiar with macs.

The bug filed here is about an upgrade to libc6 2.31-0ubuntu3 which was
known to be buggy and never migrated out of focal-proposed. It is
therefore not a good description of the problem. I'm looking now at
trying to reproduce this problem, but what we need are good logs from a
user who was affected by this when upgrading to -0ubuntu5 in the focal
release pocket.

than one of these cards is installed in the system, a bus fatal error
will be generated causing the system to reset itself when the amdgpu
module is loaded and it tries to initialize the device.

Can you please show the apt term log from this upgrade?

It is concerning that the log you posted so far does not show libcrypt1
being installed, despite this being a dependency of libc6. Did you
already have libcrypt1 installed, and at what version?

Ran into the same issue. Had to also chroot in and update, dist-upgrade
fix broken install, then copy the .so files and then everything was fine
after a reboot. Hours of time gone, but thanks to you guys, it's fixed!
I ironically ran into this or a similar issue after experiencing
problems with libc6 on eoan. Said issue caused me to upgrade early
hoping to avoid similar bugs. So much for that. Please not only look
into this, but ensure eoan isn't bugged as well, even with it soon being
on the backburner.

[Bug 1867457] [NEW] Please sync rs 20200313-1 (universe) from Debian sid (main)

2020-03-14 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Public bug reported:

I’ve just fixed some bugs upstream in rs (mostly by rebasing on top of
OpenBSD’s latest) and modernised the Debian packaging (debhelper 12,
autopkgtests, etc). Those bugs were reported by a user on Ubuntu.

As DebianImportFreeze is active (as far as I can tell, anyway), here’s
an explicit sync request. It’s a sufficiently low-used leaf package, so
the risk should be minimal, and there’s now autopkgtests anyway (in
addition to the test run during build time).

There are no Ubuntu changes to rs currently.

[Bug 1867388] Re: suspend crashes laptop

2020-03-14 Thread breezer
Installed all -43 kernel deb packages from the link in #5 of bug 1866170
and booted with it (after allowing legacy boot, disabling UEFI); cannot
notice any change. Still won't suspend, audio still not recognised.
Tried a few alsa force-reloads with dmic setting/not and mode
specified/not in case it helped with sound device recognition.

I saw link to e1000e driver download from intel there, but as you only
mentioned to test the kernel from there I will presume not worth to
download and try to build that .tar.gz .

New dmesg attached (any other logs helpful from -43 kernel boot?). Any
further logging I can turn on?

[Bug 1867459] [NEW] Please sync mksh 57-7 (universe) from Debian sid (main)

2020-03-14 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Public bug reported:

A roll-up of a couple of bugfixes (this is almost identical to the
upcoming new upstream release), but, more importantly, introduction of
autopkgtests. I’d prefer these fixes to be in focal due to LTS, and
especially as mksh 58 will be very close to this code, have the chance
at an update if it gets released before hard freeze.

As DebianImportFreeze is active (as far as I can tell, anyway), here’s
an explicit sync request. It’s, as far as I can tell, a leaf package in
Ubuntu, so has low risk.

[Bug 1867431] Re: ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: 'libc6'

2020-03-14 Thread Andre Brait
I had libcrypt1 installed.

/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcrypt.so existed, but /lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/libcrypt.so.1 didn't.

The solution in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+bug/1866844 worked for
me.

I'm not sure what you said on that bug about this not being the same
thing experienced by people in the focal release pocket. AFAIK it's
exactly the same. It's what just happened to me, but I will happily
provide logs or anything in order to help fixing this.

Just let me know the commands.

[Bug 1867388] Re: suspend crashes laptop

Thought the kern.log from the (tested-above) kernel might be rather
useful too; attached here the last boot (ie. where boot-offset time in
the log becomes [0.0] again).

I was affected and posted the workaround in the other, above mentioned,
bug. Here's my term.log - which also contains data of the - eventually -
finished upgrade. Please note I upgraded today (2020-03-14), the last
upgrade before that was two days ago (2020-03-12).

[Bug 1867431] Re: ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: 'libc6'

2020-03-14 Thread RobertH
Yes, I couldn't confirm any details about the bug yesterday (on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+bug/1866844) coz I'm
still locked out of my system but it was the only mention I could find
then of a libc6/libcrypt install failure. Will Jeffrey's instructions
there still work if using ZFS instead of ext4?

[Bug 1867455] Re: Having more than one AMD Radeon RX 580 installed will trigger a PCIe bus fatal error during boot.

2020-03-14 Thread Nikolas Britton
After blacklisting the amdgpu module via echo "blacklist amdgpu" >
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-amdgpu.conf && update-initramfs -u; the system
will let me boot all the way up with more than one RX580 installed
(currently two are installed). Running modprobe amdgpu after the system
was already booted cause a kernel panic, which I have captured and
attached a screenshot of below.

These are the apt logs: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/BbqhVpYkwm/

I can play the update, I still have the Btrfs snapshot after the update
that caused the problem, I restored the system state just before
upgrading, so I can also try upgrading again if it is state and when it
will be resolved.

[Bug 1867462] Re: Desktop icons extension does not work properly

Worth nothing, as a workaround I issued `dpkg -r --force-depends gnome-
shell-extension-desktop-icons' followed by 'apt-mark hold gnome-shell-
extension-desktop-icons` to be able to get rid of the extension. Once
done, logging out and back in will give you a clean desktop with no
icons.

[Bug 1867462] [NEW] Desktop icons extension does not work properly

2020-03-14 Thread Marcus Grenängen
Public bug reported:

First, I am unable to find any way of disabling/hiding desktop icons in
Gnome settings. Is this intended behavior?

Second, when using Gnome tweaks, there is currently no way of
disabling/hiding desktop icons via the extension, clicking the settings
button for it renders no result and disabling it will not hide desktop
icons.

[Bug 1867455] Re: Having more than one AMD Radeon RX 580 installed will trigger a PCIe bus fatal error during boot.

With the amdgpu module blacklisted on the host hypervisor, I was able to
successfully passthrough the GPU to a separate Ubuntu 19.10 VM, one GPU

the physical hardware is fine and that this is a software problem.

@kai-mast I think grub is the only way, since both sudo and login are
stuck under these circumstances.

[Bug 1867440] Re: touchpad not recognized

2020-03-14 Thread Clara Schier
new update: not completely resolved.

When i restart / reboot the laptop, the touchpad is disabled again.
opening the terminal and running sudo modprobe i2c_hid enables it again.
Maybe there is a long-term solution that doesn't involve manually resetting it
every time?

[Bug 1867431] Re: ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: 'libc6'

2020-03-14 Thread Steve Langasek
>From Jeffrey's log:

Preparing to unpack .../libcrypt1_1%3a4.4.10-10ubuntu1_amd64.deb ...
Unpacking libcrypt1:amd64 (1:4.4.10-10ubuntu1) ...
Setting up libcrypt1:amd64 (1:4.4.10-10ubuntu1) ...

Yes, this shows that you had the buggy libcrypt1 installed, which
satisfies the dependency of libc6 but has a problem that libc6 and
libcrypt1 don't agree on the path of libcrypt.so.1 in the dpkg database,
causing the Replaces: to go wrong and remove this file from disk.

Specifically, the old version of libcrypt1 considers
/usr/lib/$arch/libcrypt.so.1 to be the authoritative path of this file.
The new version of libcrypt1 has been fixed to match libc6, and consider
/lib/$arch/libcrypt.so.1 as the authoritative path of the file. If your
system has usrmerge, then /lib is a symlink to /usr/lib on the
filesystem, so these paths resolve to the same thing, but dpkg doesn't
know it, so cannot correctly handle the upgrade.

The wrong path in libcrypt1 was resolved in libxcrypt
1:4.4.10-10ubuntu4, which is the version that just migrated to the
release pocket together with glibc 2.31.

Unfortunately, libxcrypt 1:4.4.10-10ubuntu1 somehow managed to make it
into the release pocket earlier (it shouldn't have, and I don't know
exactly how this happened), so some users already had it installed. And
if they had this wrong version installed, libc6 does not force upgrade
to the fixed version of libcrypt1 first, so you still hit the bug.

After you've hit this problem, installing/reinstalling the *new* version
of libcrypt1 (1:4.4.10-10ubuntu4) should be enough to correct the
failure.

It will take some time to sort out an archive-side solution that would
prevent propagating this damage to more users of focal who had the buggy
libcrypt1 version installed. At minimum it's going to require a
reupload of glibc with a bumped versioned dependency on libcrypt1, and
probably one of libxcrypt as well to manually handle the dpkg database
breakage.

[Bug 1867465] [NEW] Installer disconnects wifi (after choosing download while installing, 3rd party)

2020-03-14 Thread MarkF
Public bug reported:

ISO testing 20.04 daily 20200314. On the Live desktop I connect to wifi.
When I click the install icon, and choose to install 3rd party (leaving
download while installing checked), the wifi disconnects.

I rebooted and tried again to make sure it wasn't something random. (It
happened exactly the same.).

This is an older Dell E5420 laptop with Broadcom BCM4313 wireless card.
(Today's Lubuntu had a wifi-related problem too. I couldn't connect to
wifi upon reboot after install. I had to reboot a 2nd time for it to
work. I reported that to their Discourse forum, not reported as a bug
yet.).

I apologize that I don't know the package or pid to report this for.

[Bug 1867465] Re: Installer disconnects wifi (after choosing download while installing, 3rd party)

2020-03-14 Thread MarkF
FYI: I get the same wifi-disconnect with today's Xubuntu daily image.

FWIW: I also tested today's daily image for Kubuntu, Mate & Budgie (and
Lubuntu). I didn't have this experience with them. As mentioned
previously, Lubuntu had a problem connecting to wifi after rebooting
(when install was finished). I had to reboot a 2nd time for wifi to
work. But, I haven't experienced that with any other of today's daily
images.

It appears the firmware is not loading, looking through the previous
logs it appears the firmware has never loaded during any of the previous
testing. The Ubuntu 19.10 VM is having the same problem as the Ubuntu
20.04 host.

2020-03-14 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

Today the update of almost all Ubuntu 20.04 systems failed. Afterwards
the system can't be rebooted and even the recovery mode does not work.

This is one of the symptons and I even did not touch the keyboard.
