[Bug 1867813] Re: [MIR] linux-firmware-raspi2 to restricted
I gave this a review from the MIR POV under the constraint that this would likely be handled similar to the other firmware/microcode packages. It is important to note that just looking at the source this would be a clear nack: - precompiled kernel modules in ./modules - precompiled shared objects in ./opt/vc - many unsused source in ./hadfp/opt/ - GPU bins for 1001 drivers ... This is Ubuntu only anyway and we use the code from https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/releases If we could define a trivial but very effective source path filter and repackage this into a -dfsg like tarball with subtrees we don't need removed that would be awesoem. After all MIR approvals are given on Source, and me (as well as likely the security Team later) probably would love to see a much much smaller source (since you only use so few of it). It generally seems well maintained upstream and as a package. So yeah once this i trimmed down I'd give it a MIR ack and we can move it to the security-team. If they ack as well then the Archive-Admins can make the final call of "yeah lets support it despite being blobs, like the other such cases". For now re-assigning to Dave to come up with the reduced source (or to convince otherwise). ** Changed in: linux-firmware-raspi2 (Ubuntu) Assignee: Christian Ehrhardt (paelzer) => Dave Jones (waveform) ** Changed in: linux-firmware-raspi2 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1867813 Title: [MIR] linux-firmware-raspi2 to restricted To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware-raspi2/+bug/1867813/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks Dave and Dimitri! [Bug 1891929] Re: [MIR] google-guest-agent
Compared to the old review we had these open topics: 1. confine services - you evaluated it (thanks a lot) and outlined why it can't be done due to conceptual issues. Ok if the security Team is. 2. Dependencies - well, now all vendored as shown in bug 1896246 and ok as exception Thanks for dropping the build-deps, that should ensure it really contains what we assume. 3. copyright - is fixed New topics: 4. Tests: in several of the - formerly separate - packages we challenged the "lack of" or "disabling" of tests. The thought was that at least overarching as the eventual use case that testing has to happen. Now that all are built form one source we have that spot. 4a. At buld I only see it running "go test -vet=off -v -p 4 github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/guest-agent/google_guest_agent github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/guest-agent/google_guest_agent/snapshot_service github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/guest-agent/google_metadata_script_runner". So by vendorizing all libs we essentially have further reduced an already bad test coverage. Is there any way we could have it run the sub-tests of vendored code AND/OR do some (simulated since we lack the real data service) end-to-end test? 4b. Does upstream have any sort of test suite to test the final combined thing? If so could we integrate that into an autopkgtest? So almost as expected the weak testing should be improved. That is but is a strong, but no blocking TODO for you. It would be awesome if you could spend some time for that while waiting for the security re-review! I didn't find other issues, but Security - as mentioned - needs to re- review due to the added extra code and a re-visit of the unconfined externally-controlled services situation. P.S. Looking back at recent Go promotions we might need (independent to this bug) a re-review of our process as it seems to me all go an exception route eventually, so it seems a dysfunctional process to me. /me missed an engineering sprint ... ** Changed in: google-guest-agent (Ubuntu) Assignee: Christian Ehrhardt (paelzer) => Ubuntu Security Team (ubuntu-security) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1891929 Title: [MIR] google-guest-agent To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/google-guest-agent/+bug/1891929/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1891929] Re: [MIR] google-guest-agent
Summary: - bug 1896246 essentially is a switch to fully vendorize and done - there in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/google-osconfig-agent/+bug/1896246/comments/2 security signs off on that approach - thereby bug 1894731 is essentially dead and I updated it to reflect that That makes the remaining TODOs a MIR and a security re-evaluate of this (now vendorized) package. @Security: for your re-review: 1. much more code to look at now compared to your forer check 2. you might also reconsider details like the aforementioned: "Google-shutdown-scripts.service and google-startup-scripts.service run user provided arbitrary scripts thus they can't be confined." As IMHO that makes it a prime target to inject attacks if exploitable in any way. [Bug 1898155] [NEW] oomd is useless. at least with default configuration
Public bug reported: I have 16GB or RAM and 2GB of swap. I also usually have several docker containers up, and also run an IDE (PhpStorm) and Firefox with about a million tabs open (bad habit, I know). Each of these things consumes memory, so typically I don't have that much free RAM. Every now and then, some webpage I have open in Firefox will trigger something akin to a memory leak, thus causing Firefox to gradually consume more and more RAM, until there's no more free RAM left, at which point the computer begins swapping like crazy and becomes unusable. Usually, I give up waiting for it to become responsive in a couple minutes and just turn it off and then back on. That's why I installed oomd. I hoped it would notice the computer approaching that point of no return and kill Firefox (or PhpStorm, or whatever else), then I would just reopen the application and continue working. BUT THAT NEVER HAPPENS! And I believe that that is worthy of a bug report, because in essense it means that oomd absolutely fails to do what it's meant to do. I have package version 0.4.0-1 installed on Ubuntu 20.04: $ apt policy oomd oomd: Įdiegta:0.4.0-1 Kandidatas: 0.4.0-1 Versijų lentelė: *** 0.4.0-1 100 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 0.3.1-1 500 500 http://lt.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal/universe amd64 Packages And whenever I check, the service is running: $ service oomd status ● oomd.service - Userland out-of-memory killer daemon Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/oomd.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled) Active: active (running) since Fri 2020-10-02 08:14:38 EEST; 13min ago Docs: man:oomd(1) https://github.com/facebookincubator/oomd#configuration Main PID: 815 (oomd) Tasks: 3 (limit: 18864) Memory: 5.0M (low: 64.0M) CGroup: /system.slice/oomd.service └─815 /usr/bin/oomd --interval 1 --config /etc/oomd/oomd.json --cgroup-fs /sys/fs/cgroup/unified spal. 02 08:14:38 carbon oomd[815]: [../src/oomd/config/ConfigTypes.cpp:50] DisableOnDrop=0 spal. 02 08:14:38 carbon oomd[815]: [../src/oomd/config/ConfigTypes.cpp:54] SilenceLogs= spal. 02 08:14:38 carbon oomd[815]: [../src/oomd/config/ConfigTypes.cpp:58] DetectorGroup=free swap goes below 10 percent spal. 02 08:14:38 carbon oomd[815]: [../src/oomd/config/ConfigTypes.cpp:63] Detector=swap_free spal. 02 08:14:38 carbon oomd[815]: [../src/oomd/config/ConfigTypes.cpp:65] Args= spal. 02 08:14:38 carbon oomd[815]: [../src/oomd/config/ConfigTypes.cpp:70] threshold_pct=10 spal. 02 08:14:38 carbon oomd[815]: [../src/oomd/config/ConfigTypes.cpp:79] Action=kill_by_swap_usage spal. 02 08:14:38 carbon oomd[815]: [../src/oomd/config/ConfigTypes.cpp:81] Args= spal. 02 08:14:38 carbon oomd[815]: [../src/oomd/config/ConfigTypes.cpp:86] cgroup=user.slice/user-*.slice/session-*.scope,user.slice/user-*.slice/user@*.service/*,system.slice/* spal. 02 08:14:38 carbon oomd[815]: [../src/oomd/Oomd.cpp:377] Running oomd But like I said, it seems to be completely not functional. ** Affects: oomd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1898155 Title: oomd is useless. at least with default configuration To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/oomd/+bug/1898155/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1891680] Re: grub-pc needs to detect when debconf points to invalid drive and stop in preinst, before unpacking files, and also treat this as a failure in postinst
manually installing grub works like this: # grub-install --force --removable --boot-directory=/boot /dev/sda Installing for i386-pc platform. Installation finished. [Bug 1898038] Re: docker-support/multipass-support broken with system apparmor3 (20.10)
Vendoring /etc/apparmor* into snapd still sounds a bit problematic - the question would be then which aa2 version to vendor - and ideally to avoid a mismatch between the parser and profiles we would still want to vendor apparmor_parser into snapd then too. For completeness, Jamie also suggested on IRC that we could bind-mount the parser from the host into the snap - in this case, there is still an open question of whether we always do this, or just when the multipass- support/docker-support interface is connected. I would think that perhaps it makes most sense to only do this in the interface support code. This last option seems the easiest quick fix since it does not require updates to the base snaps and it doesn't have much chance of regression (compared to using the apparmor config/profiles of the base snaps) since we are already using this (host) policy for these interfaces. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1898038 Title: docker-support/multipass-support broken with system apparmor3 (20.10) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/snapd/+bug/1898038/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1883174] Re: Some desktop icons disappear
Just FYI for anyone that stumbles upon this thread. In Ubuntu 20.04, if you want to work around the issue for now it can be done by placing your preferred desktop files in the home (or any other) folder and just placing link files to those files on your desktop. When you do this you can still double click and edit files directly from the desktop, but when you save it doesn't lose or move around the desktop files. Some systems (notably, certain Lenovo ideapads) don't respect this part of the UEFI specification for USB booting, and require the non-standard EFI/BOOT directory to be on the iso9660 filesystem.
