** Description changed:

  There is no sound output from the laptop internal speakers when running
  Ubuntu 20.10.

  This is a dual-boot system;
   - Booting Windows first and then rebooting to Ubuntu -> sound works fine
   - Booting Ubuntu first and then rebooting to Windows -> Windows identifies
sound as not enables and runs its troubleshooter to enable it

  The card seems to be recognised OK (system sound settings report output
  device as Speaker - Tiger Lake-LP Smart Sound technology Audio
  Controller. VU meters etc all appear as if sound is playing, but no
  sound.

  Headphone socket works perfectly.

  Similar bug reports for different laptops in the HP x360 series suggest
  this is a pinning problem and that the extract below from the boot logs
  may support this.

[Bug 1875548] Re: Its not easy to determine how to skip the filesystem check

2021-02-06 Thread Jay Michael
Forget "quiet", it's whether "fsck.mode=skip" is the last thing on
the kernel command line.

 There is no disk check if there is something after
"fsck.mode=skip". I tried "quiet". Then I tried "nomodeset" instead.

 I tried putting a blank at the end of the line. That was *not*
enough to make the "fsck" stop the disk check. I was using the GRUB2
editor, so maybe it would have worked if I really added a blank at the
end of the line in the grub.cfg file.

 Also, Ctrl-C does *not* abort the disk check. Given the way the
display crawled through a flock of files before saying it was on
squashfs, I'm pretty sure I hit the Ctrl-C before it had started on
squashfs -- It just did not pay attention.

[Bug 1905947] Re: lubuntu hirsute: display configuration doesn't survive logout/reboot

2021-02-06 Thread Chris Guiver
This still occurs on my primary *hirsute* box.. but reason for log

QA-test install on
- dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e8300, 8gb, amd/ati radeon rv610/radeon hd2400
pro/xt)
followed by second QA-test install (install alongside)

On evaluating second 'install alongside" I logged into first install,
and my changed screen settings are no longer present (my portrait
monitor is back to landscape & I'm having to read sideways..)

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/419/builds/226516/testcases/1701/results

(I don't record this bug in bug section of ISO QA tracker, as it's not
part of the QA-test; requiring a logout & second login which isn't part
of QA-test)

[Bug 1875548] Re: Its not easy to determine how to skip the filesystem check

2021-02-06 Thread Jay Michael
I craft my boot device by hand. I'm using files filched from some
Ubuntu distribution (so, GRUB2), lately booting with the ISO file. I've
booted from an external (USB) hard disk, and from thumb drives.

 On my external hard drive, I copied vmlinuz and initrd to the ESP
(because on another machine, with Secure Boot enabled, the version of
GRUB2 I filched does not support NTFS filesystems, and I cannot insert
the appropriate module). The ISO file is in a subdirectory of an NTFS
partition.  The GRUB2 item is:

set bdir=(${root})/boot
set fsd=/os/boot
menuentry "Ubuntu 20.04.2 64-bit via ISO" {
  set gfxpayload=keep
  set ubdir=${bdir}/ubuntu200402-64
  set isopath=${fsd}/ubuntu-20.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso
  linux ${ubdir}/vmlinuz  boot=casper  iso-scan/filename=${isopath} ignore_uuid
fsck.mode=skip
  initrd ${ubdir}/initrd
}

 So, GRUB is told to load the kernel and initrd from the FAT-
formatted ESP, while the kernel is told to find the ISO file.

 I observed the same behavior with 20.04.1 as with 20.04.2.
 I observed the same behavior when booting from a thumb drive as when
booting from a hard drive.

 I haven't tried to find a copy of "20.04". Was there such a thing?
Or was 20.04.1 the first released version, the one referred to in all
those posts complaining about the automatic disk check?

This is not ploblem of Minix 3.1.2a because in Bochs emulator reads an
writes of files of any size works well.

I also consider this to be a major bug as it prevents communication of
information between the guest OS and the host. I have over 300 students

[Bug 195982] Re: Shift key (and caps lock) stop working when using VMWare

2021-02-06 Thread Gary Clayburg
Ok I see this issue is closed as its quite old. Is this particular
issue tracked somewhere else?

I just upgraded my Ubuntu 16.04 system to Ubuntu 18.04.5 and this issue
still exists for me.

what I'd like to be able to do is:
1. configure my keyboard on the host laptop to map "Caps Lock as an extra
control key"
2. launch a vm in vmware player on the laptop
3. Use both the left and right shift keys inside any window on the host laptop.

The workaround of running "setxkbmap" does get around the issue
somewhat. For me it does allow the right shift key to start working
again. However, it doesn't fix everything. For example, I notice that
I can no longer use a the Alt-F1 keyboard shortcut in IntelliJ IDEA.
The only workaround I have found for this is to restart the entire
laptop after using any vm in vmware player or just not use Alt-F1
keystroke.

I do recall having to do some keyboard mapping a long time ago so that
IntelliJ could process Alt-F1 and not Ubuntu itself.

Does anyone know if Ubuntu 20.04 magically makes this issue go away?

One other thing I remembered. I had a similar but a little different issue
some years ago with the "caps lock as extra control key" setting when using
synergy.  More details here:

https://github.com/symless/synergy-core/issues/4658

AFAIK, that issue was never resolved either.

[Bug 1914889] [NEW] dns timeout didn't result in tempfail

2021-02-06 Thread Nick Tait
Public bug reported:

My mail logs show that OpenDKIM experienced a DNS timeout when
validating the DKIM signature on an inbound email, but then accepted the
message. As a result the DMARC policy was applied and the message was
quarantined.

The expected behaviour in the event of a DNS timeout is that it would
use the On-DNSError setting, which defaults to tempfail, and would cause
the sending MTA to retry at a later time, and when this happened it is
expected that the result of the earlier DNS query would be immediately
available because it would have been cached by the DNS server, and so
the signature would have been successfully verified and therefore would
have passed DMARC check (and the email would have been accepted).

Here is what my mail logs showed:

You can see there is no DNSTimeout setting, meaning it uses the default
value of 5 seconds. Also there are no On-... options, so these are also
using default settings. My expectation is that a DNS timeout would use
On-DNSError default value, which is documented as tempfail. However it
would appear that it is using some other setting which defaults to
accept?

As far as I can tell this is a one-off occurrence, and not something I
can easily recreate. But hopefully there is enough information here to
determine what happened?

Thanks,
Nick.

** Affects: opendkim (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

@kaihengfeng:

Thanks for your information.
The linux-oem-20.04b kernel is installed, at a first test:

- "snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0" must be disabled, otherwise no input device
recognized
- without this boot option, internal microphone working
- external headset:
- - output possible
- - NO input, there is a headset microphone port in xubuntu volume control, but
nothing comes through

[Bug 1914888] [NEW] ifupdown_0.8.17ubuntu1.1 doesn't assign static ipv4 and ipv6

2021-02-06 Thread Aaron Dudek
Public bug reported:

Upgraded from 16.06 to 18.04.5. 1 interface has issues coming up. The
only thing that is different is that this interface has both ipv4 and
ipv6 addresses.

eg
auto eth6
iface eth6 inet6 static
address 2001:1ffb:ffe:1::3/64
gateway 2001:1ffb:ffe:1::1
dns-nameservers 2001:1b3b::::71 2001:1b3b::::72

iface eth6 inet static
address 10.155.240.122/29
gateway 10.155.240.121
#   dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8

If I comment out either the v6 or v4 config, then it works.
Also v6 seems to show dadfailed tentative until I down and up the link, then
the ip address is gone

[Bug 1914884] [NEW] udev tries to assign identical name to multiple network cards

2021-02-06 Thread sm8ps
Public bug reported:

Upon upgrading from U18.04 to U20.04.2, the network interface names became
unpredictable. They could be *any* of eth0, eth1, eth2 and ens2. Further
inspection shows error messages like
"systemd-udevd: eth1: Failed to rename network interface 3 from 'eth1' to
'ens2': File exists"

The installation is plain vanilla; in fact, the system had not been used
at all yet. Neither of the files '/lib/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-
generator.rules', '/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules' or
'/lib/udev/rules.d/71-biosdevname.rules' exist.

On U18.04, 'ls /sys/class/net' yielded "enp5s0 enp14s0 enp9s0 lo".
After the upgrade, it currently shows "ens2 eth0 eth1 lo".
For each of these entries, 'udevadm test-builtin net_id $nic 2>/dev/null' gives
the following:

/sys/class/net/ens2
ID_NET_NAMING_SCHEME=v245
ID_NET_NAME_MAC=enx002481d13e60
ID_OUI_FROM_DATABASE=Hewlett Packard
ID_NET_NAME_PATH=enp14s0
ID_NET_NAME_SLOT=ens2

/sys/class/net/eth0
ID_NET_NAMING_SCHEME=v245
ID_NET_NAME_MAC=enx001018b197dc
ID_OUI_FROM_DATABASE=Broadcom
ID_NET_NAME_PATH=enp5s0
ID_NET_NAME_SLOT=ens2

/sys/class/net/eth1
ID_NET_NAMING_SCHEME=v245
ID_NET_NAME_MAC=enx00101897069a
ID_OUI_FROM_DATABASE=Broadcom
ID_NET_NAME_PATH=enp9s0
ID_NET_NAME_SLOT=ens2

This seems to be a case where the naming scheme v245 should be replaced by
v247, according to
https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd.net-naming-scheme.html
The situation does not change with passing "net.naming-scheme=latest" to the
kernel.
The installed version of udev is 245.4-4ubuntu3.4.

Since this faulty behavior happened completely out of the blue on a
practically pristine LTS installation, I hope to have some kind of
solution similar to a backport. Thanks for comments!

2021-02-06 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
libffi7 (3.3-5ubuntu1) hirsute; urgency=medium

  * Provide libffi7 runtime library for the 3rd party app
compatiblity. LP: #1903890

 -- Dimitri John Ledkov   Fri, 05 Feb 2021 13:34:22
+

I have now shipped libffi7 in hirsute. Such that if one installs third-party
binaries, on hirsute, one can install libffi7 from the archive, and things
should "just work". It would be nice if somebody who is affected could verify
that.

You can get hirsute trivially with lxd.

Or please provide concrete reproducer examples - i.e. specifically which
applications, downloaded from where, and installed how would be useful.
I see a few things mentioned in this bug report, but not detailed enough
for me to experience the issue myself.

[Bug 1914883] [NEW] Please cherry-pick ab3d207fe89bc0c63739db19e177af49179aa457 into Focal package

2021-02-06 Thread Nathan Chancellor
Public bug reported:

Commit 5d971f9e67 ("memory: Revert "memory: accept mismatching sizes in
memory_region_access_valid"") was cherry-picked to deal with
CVE-2020-13754 but the follow up fix in commit ab3d207fe8 ("riscv:
sifive_test: Allow 16-bit writes to memory region") was not, resulting
in the bug described in the commit message in 1:4.2-3ubuntu6.11:
https://github.com/nathanchance/continuous-integration2/runs/1834110909

Please consider adding ab3d207fe8 to the next release so that there is
no more regression.

[Bug 1914881] [NEW] No sound from internal speakers HP Spectre x360 Convertible 14-ea0xxx, Realtek ALC245,

2021-02-06 Thread Derek Marshall
Public bug reported:

There is no sound output from the laptop internal speakers when running
Ubuntu 20.10.

This is a dual-boot system;
 - Booting windows first and then rebooting to Ubuntu = sound works fine
 - Booting Ubuntu first and then rebooting to Windows - Windows identifies
sound as not enables and runs its troubleshooter to enable it

The card seems to be recognised OK (system sound settings report output
device as Speaker - Tiger Lake-LP Smart Sound technology Audio
Controller. VU meters etc all appear as if sound is playing, but no
sound.

Headphone socket works perfectly.

Similar bug reports for different laptops in the HP x360 series suggest
this is a pinning problem and that the extract below from the boot logs
may support this.

[Bug 1914880] [NEW] xenial package for redshift is out of date (1.10 < 1.12)

2021-02-06 Thread Shane DeMeulenaere
Public bug reported:

This isn't a bug with the application itself, just that the package in
the 16.04 (xenial) repositories is out of date.

The current release is 1.12, however the version in the xenial repos is

What needs to happen to get the package updated? Can I help?

[Bug 1913284] Re: [plugin] [bcache] add a new bcache plugin

2021-02-06 Thread Ponnuvel Palaniyappan
Hi @Eric,

Updated the description with SRU. Please let me know if anything needs
change/unclear. Thanks.

** Description changed:

- A new plugin for bcache stats are proposed upstream [0] and there's a PR
- currently under review [1].
+ [Impact]
+
+ Gather bcache stats as part of sos report.
+
+ Bcache is often deployed as a "frontend" (typically using SSDs) for Ceph
+ cluster's with HDDs to improve performance. When we are dealing with
+ bcache performance or need to debug bcache, these stats are essential to
+ identify the problem. The newly added plugin collects various stats on
+ bcache.

- [0] https://github.com/sosreport/sos/issues/2378
- [1] https://github.com/sosreport/sos/pull/2384
+ [Test Case]
+
+ It's a new plugin. When sosreport is run on a system with bcache, a
+ number of small files from /sys/fs/bcache and /sys/block/bcache should
+ be collected with this plugin in place. On systems, without bcache, this
+ should be a no-op.
+
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ Worst case scenarios could be:
+ - As with any plugin, this plugin, in theory, could potentially run
indefinitely and timeout.
+ - Affect performance when run on a live system. There's one known case where
querying the proiorty_stats [0] had such a problem. But it's not collected as
part of this plugin.
+
+ But otherwise, the stats collection of bcache devices (even if there are
+ many bcache devices deployed on a system) shouldn't affect anything on a
+ live system and shouldn't get anywhere closer to timeout.
+
+
+ [Other Info]

[Bug 1914877] [NEW] Stuttering video playback

2021-02-06 Thread BitBurners.com
Public bug reported:

Something has regressed recently to cause stuttering video playback.
especially at the Cmore.fi. This makes sports broadcasts very
uncomfortable to look at. The issue appeared about 1-2 weeks ago, so it
is very recent.

It used to work fine on this HW for months, but not anymore.

It does not depend on the browser, as the issue is the same on Firefox or
Chrome.
It does not depend on the DE, as KDE Neon suffers from the same issue.

I had to install Windows 10, which of course is a tragedy. Posting this
report from a 20.04.2 live USB session and the issue is reproduced with
this as well.

[Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2021-02-06 Thread Armin Avdić
I think it's not what I want to do, mainline and proposed kernels are not the
same thing (I think).
I would like to install fix to the same kernel version that I'm runing or
anything else to avoid problems with nvidia driver on mainline kernel releses.
I already reinstalled everything 3 times tampering with this bug and would love
not to do it again because I've setup a lot of stuf and dont want to do it
again. For now I'm using i2c_standalone workaround but it's not running
flawlessly (frequently stucks in scrolling mode or taps stops working...) so I
want to test proposed solution.

[Bug 1900257] Re: XKBVARIANT setting in /etc/default/keyboard not respected

2021-02-06 Thread Luzius Thöny
I have confirmed this issue today on a fresh install of groovy. So it is
not an upgrade issue.

A workaround is to put the setxkbmap command into a bash script and have
it run on session startup.

[Bug 1768291] Re: lirc is flooding the syslog with two lines each second

2021-02-06 Thread Chris
So, now it's been two years since I first encountered this issue on 18.04.
I'm wondering if it has been fixed for 20.04 ...
based on lack of activity in this ticket I supposed it won't be fixed.
I'd like to use LIRC but I guess I'll abandon it forever since I
refuse to let it spam my SSD's syslog.

installed with UEFI, you have something else and you need to look for

[Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2021-02-06 Thread Maton Danko
>From the command line, I don't know how to do it, I use usually the
Mainline Kernel updater's one fork like
https://github.com/bkw777/mainline (see installation guide there).

You can check the name of the kernels i.e. here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_version_history

groovy - 20.10
bionic - 18.04
focal - 20.04
xenial - 16.04

then you install the latest RC version from it, make sure it starts with the
same numbers.
After a restart, the newest version will run.
To see RC you need to go to the Settings and enable prerelease or proposed
versions or uncheck Hide unstable RC versions, I don't know the exact name of
it.

Check #357 when you testing, probably you will face with the same issue,
that the right physical click doesn't work as it should be (and some
gestures). If that's that case then the test failed, if it works
everything properly, then success.

How to run the older kernel, that's I don't know, you need to check with
google.

Also, if you can't search for an issue in google, I suggest to not even
try to test it, because RC releases can screw up anything and you may be
stuck with a buggy machine that you need to reinstall. Do it on your own
risk.

I also suggest doing a snapshot with timeshift from your system before
you start the process, in case of problem you will be able to restore
hopefully to that point your system. (pls google it how to do it)

[Bug 1914874] [NEW] Wi-Fi sometimes disappears after reboot on AMD Ryzen machine

2021-02-06 Thread Konstantinos Filios
Public bug reported:

I have an HP Omen 15 with AMD Ryzen 7 4800H CPU and GeForce GTX 1660 Ti
discrete graphics card, running kubuntu 20.10 with "Ubuntu
5.8.0-41.46-generic 5.8.18" kernel and nvidia proprietery graphics
drivers. One of my problems (unfortunately there are a lot) is that
every now and then the laptop boots without wifi support. It seems as if
the wireless controller does not even exist.

I have captured the output of dmesg and lspci in the "good" scenario,
i.e. when I do have wifi (which is the most frequent case) and in the
"bad" scenario, i.e. when wifi disappears.

Please note that I haven't found a way to fix this issue after boot, so
I need to reboot the machine in order to get my wifi back, which most of
the times works, but sometimes I need to reboot 2 or 3 times before it
appears again. I haven't found a pattern yet, it seems pretty random.

[Bug 1909117] Re: Repeated kernel OOPS in dentry_unlink_inode

2021-02-06 Thread Geoff Silver
Since moving to 5.4.0-65.73 I've twice experienced a crash in
raw_spin_lock(). Is this related or a different issue? This happened
at 5:11pm yesterday.

[Bug 1906628] Re: autopkgtest fails in hirsute(-proposed) on amd64

2021-02-06 Thread Otto Kekäläinen
Currently I am seeing only a failure for i386 at
https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/mariadb-10.5
about the installation step, that just says "Depends: mariadb-test:i386 but it
is not installable" without further debug info.

The i386 test is also failing on mariadb-10.3 across all releases at
https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/mariadb-10.3
with a similar error.

Older 10.1 and 10.0 dont show (historical) failures:
https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/mariadb-10.1
https://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/mariadb-10.0

By the way, mariadb-10.3 should be removed from Hisute. It is supposed
to ship with MariaDB 10.5 only.

[Bug 1906302] Re: [plugin][apt] Move unattended-upgrades log collection

2021-02-06 Thread Eric Desrochers
** Description changed:

- This commit move the collection of unattended-upgrades from 'logs' plugin to
'apt' plugin:
+ [Impact]
+
+ Having u-u logs collection inside the apt plugin make more sense
+ (instead of logs plugin) as it is using apt functionalities and python
+ modules such as apt, apt_inst, apt_pkg.
+
+ u-u is a mechanism to automatically install security upgrades on
+ Debian/Ubuntu. It is enabled by default at installation.
+
+ 'sos' philosophy is that each plugin should be taken care of its own
+ logs.
+
+ [Test case]
+
+ * Deploy Ubuntu (A container will do)
+ * Run sosreport and make sure the systemd plugin is executed
+   ** sosreport -o apt
+ * Look the content of the generated tarball under
'path_to_sosreport/var/log/unattended-upgrades/'
+
+ and under 'path_to_sosreport/sos_logs/sos.log' for the execution log of the
'apt' plugin:
+ sos.log:2021-02-06 11:23:55,257 INFO: [plugin:apt] collecting path
'/var/log/unattended-upgrades/.
+
+
+ [Where problem could occur]
+
+ If a problem have to occur, it will only be impacting the apt plugin
+ itself, not the core functionalities of 'sos' nor its other plugins.
+
+ A third party vendor might have to break the habit to assume that the
+ 'logs' plugin will take care of the 'u-u' logs, and that 'apt' is the
+ way to move forward now.
