[Bug 1906877] Re: diagnostics panel can leave automatic crash reporting enabled

2021-05-21 Thread Brian Murray
I installed the version of gnome-control-center from focal-proposed and
can confirm that the only setting "Automatic" creates the file
/var/lib/apport/autoreport and switching the option to anything but
"Automatic" removes the /var/lib/apport/autoreport file.

[Bug 1922342] Re: HIrsute live session takes ages to boot on BIOS systems

Hi,

José Marinho wrote:

Without converting to GPT ?
That would be really strange and surely no solution for the gerneral public.

(It is not allowed by GPT specs to set the "bootable" flag on the
"protective MBR partition" of type 0xEE, which serves as indication that
GPT is valid and also shall protect the data range of the GPT partitions.
Tests with grub-mkrescue ISOs on EFI systems failed. This led to the
introduction of the second partition of type 0x00 with boot flag.)

So the BIOS or GRUB on that BIOS get deceived by a boot flag at the second
(dummy) partition, but the BIOS does not demand the boot flag on MBR
partition table.

Debian does something similar for its "netinst" ISOs.
The BIOS-only ISO with no GPT and no EFI partition is deceivingly named
"mac", because the machines which need it are old x86 Apple machines.
Those machines are said to take offense from the presence of the EFI
partition or of the invald GPT in mjg's partition layout.

Normal BIOS+EFI ISO:

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-cd/debian-10.9.0-amd64-netinst.iso
The BIOS-only "mac" ISO is at:

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-cd/debian-mac-10.9.0-amd64-netinst.iso
Each has about 330 MB.
The version number may change in a few weeks or days. Look by a web browser at
  https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-cd/
for
  debian-*.*.*-amd64-netinst.iso
  debian-mac-*.*.*-amd64-netinst.iso

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * Dell introduces new function called Dell Privacy, it utilizes
hardware mute to control audio and camera. The commit map the reported
key event to mic mute for making userspace can work as before, "Mic
Mute" dialog pop-up while the mic mute button is pressed.

  [Test Plan]

   * Use a Dell machine, which has Dell privacy function, and press mic mute
key.
GUI will pop up "Mic Mute" icon.

  [Where problems could occur]

   * This change adds key event mapping in hwdb, which won't impact other
  hardware.

+ any regression would likely cause problems with key(s) from the
+ specific dell kb matching the modified listing in the hw db.
+
  [Other Info]

   * The change can only work with kernel commit on some specific hardware, ex.
Latitude 9520. The commit series is
"hardware-privacy-implementation-for-dell-laptop" in alsa-devel kernel tree.
     https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/alsa-devel/list/?series=465445
   * This change has been verified on Dell machine.

[Bug 1929241] [NEW] [feature request] add a proxy CLI option to debootstrap

2021-05-21 Thread Bill Yikes
Public bug reported:

debootstrap connects to the Internet but provides no proxy option, and
the man page makes no mention of whether the http_proxy environment
variable is honored. Ideally, Tor users would benefit most from SOCKS4a

[Bug 1929239] [NEW] debootstrap documentation bug

2021-05-21 Thread Bill Yikes
Public bug reported:

The documentation for debootstrap is broken and also needs
reorganization. It lives here:

https://www.debian.org/releases/bullseye/arm64/apds03.en.html

To put this in "Appendix D: Random Bits" is a bit unsettling. It should
have a chapter of its own sitting in parallel to the installer guides.

The main bug is telling users to run commands inside chroot that must
run outside of chroot. The first paragraph says: "$ symbolizes a
command to be entered in the user's current system, while # refers to a
command entered in the Debian chroot." Then every command given on that
page follows a hash. E.g. "# mke2fs -j /dev/sda6". That's impossible.
You can't chroot before you have a filesystem.

Normally the best place to report this would be the "www.debian.org"
/project/ in the Debian bug tracker, but the Debian bug tracker only
function by email and last time I checked the mail server did not accept
email from me. If someone would mirror this upstream it would be
appreciated.

[Bug 1922342] Re: HIrsute live session takes ages to boot on BIOS systems

2021-05-21 Thread José Marinho
Well, I'm only came here again firstly to say thanks to Michael and Thomas for
taking into account this problem. Specially, knowing that this bug probably is
quite exceptional and affects at only few cases. Today I was trying on some old
computers on my job and it booted fairly well on all of this so, I had bad luck
with this issue.
Secondly, I don't know what is the best approach for fixing this problem. If it
would be easy to insert a message when the boot process gets stuck or what. I
think it is normal that, if the USB does not reach the desktop environment
after more than 5 or 6 minutes and if you listen the cpu fan working at full
speed, it is normal to think that the usb it's not going to boot.
I was timing how long it takes to reach plymouth and the full desktop
environment with a Lubuntu daily build iso and this was the results (the start
point was grub in all cases):
With the iso without any change:
- Plymouth --> 7 minutes
- Desktop environment --> 7 minutes 50 seconds
Marking the first partition as bootable legacy BIOS:
- Plymouth --> 54 seconds.
- Desktop environment --> 1 minute 45 seconds
Without marking any partition as bootable but changing the partition table from
GPT to MBR:
- Plymouth --> 25 seconds.
- Desktop environment --> 1 minute 20 seconds.
With this results is clear that the last is the best so, a naive question for
my part is: would it be too inconvenient to release 2 isos: a main iso for most
computers and a legacy iso with an MBR partition table for use if somebody has
problems with the main iso?
And finaly, other possible solution might be to include on the release notes or
somewhere more suitable that, on some systems, this problem could be present
and the possible workarounds.
And nothing more on my part. It's time for the people on charge of this decide
what is better. If something more is needed from me let me know.
Thanks and have a nice day.

2021-05-21 Thread Utkarsh Gupta
Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

I tried to reproduce this but couldn't, further:
> InstallationDate: Installed on 2020-12-29 (141 days ago)
> InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS "Xenial Xerus" - Release amd64
> (20170215.2)

This makes me wonder if it's actually a local issue?

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local problem,
rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I am marking this bug as 'Incomplete'.

However, if you believe that this is really a bug in Ubuntu, then we would
be grateful if you would provide a more complete description of the problem
with steps to reproduce, explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu
rather than a problem specific to your system, and then change the bug
status back to "New".

For local configuration issues, you can find assistance here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

** Changed in: tftp-hpa (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Incomplete

[Bug 1929125] Re: lib32z1 cannot be installed on ubuntu 20.04 LTS

2021-05-21 Thread David Huculak
Thanks for the response.

My mind somehow converted 2.33 into 2.3.3 so I thought 2.3.3 < 2.4,
thanks for helping me identify that mistake.

I see now that this is the real problem:

$ sudo apt install libc6-i386

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libc6-i386 : Depends: libc6 (= 2.31-0ubuntu9.2) but 2.31-0ubuntu9.3 is to be
installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

And I can see that version 2.31-0ubuntu9.2 is available for me to install:

$ sudo apt list -a libc6

libc6/now 2.31-0ubuntu9.3 amd64 [installed,local]
libc6/focal-updates 2.31-0ubuntu9.2 amd64
libc6/focal 2.31-0ubuntu9 amd64

libc6/now 2.31-0ubuntu9.3 i386 [installed,local]
libc6/focal-updates 2.31-0ubuntu9.2 i386
libc6/focal 2.31-0ubuntu9 i386

So I guess the solution is to install this previous version of libc6:

$ sudo apt install libc6=2.31-0ubuntu9.2

Will this cause my system to become unstable? I don't feel quite safe
running this command blindly. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1925843] Re: Linux 5.8.0-49+ fails to resume from suspend

2021-05-21 Thread Steven Ketchum
Thank you for your suggestion to test the latest kernel. Unfortunately,
I am having trouble booting using the suggested kernel (5.13-rc2).

I have downloaded the appropriate (I think) kernel packages from the link you
provided:

linux-headers-5.13.0-051300rc2-generic_5.13.0-051300rc2.202105162330_amd64.deb
linux-headers-5.13.0-051300rc2_5.13.0-051300rc2.202105162330_all.deb

I have verified the checksums, installed the packages, and configured
them using dpkg --configure -a.

When I try to boot using kernel 5.13-rc2, I receive the following errors:
error: /boot/vmlinuz-5.13.0-051300rc2-generic has invalid signature.
error: you need to load the kernel first

Please advise.

[Bug 1926265] Re: slapd enter in infinite loop on sched_yield syscall

2021-05-21 Thread lincvz
My bad..
You're right, in my test, the second write() is performed on stdout cause my
ldapsearch command is wrong. I missed the '-H' arg to properly set the LDAP
URI (but you too :-p ).
Consequently, the connection was in LDAP not LDAPS, and "ldaps://..." was the
requested attributs :-s

So since I learnt to make a good ldapsearch and opened my eyes to read gdb
output, I can fully reproducible the issue .
Thanks.

I'll test the patched version on my test machine.

[Bug 1929232] [NEW] Nautilus does not find the correct mime icons with Bitwig Studio

2021-05-21 Thread Alexandre Bique
Public bug reported:

Hi,

If you install Bitwig Studio 3.3.9 or later you'll find out that the
mime icon association is broken with Ubuntu.

I think this problem is specific to ubuntu + nautilus because:
 - on fedora it works
 - on archlinux it works
 - with dolphin on ubuntu it works

Here is a download link: https://downloads-eu.bitwig.com/stable/3.3.9

Alexandre

[Bug 1929224] [NEW] Scanning issue with Ubuntu 18.04 and HPLIP version 3.21.2

2021-05-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hello HPLIP team,

Since some days I have an HP Smart Tank Plus 555 printer connected to
Ubuntu 18.04 with HPLIP installed. Everything works fine so far, but I
have an issue with scanning. The images are not scanned correctly with
highest resolution 1200 dpi (lower resolutions are working fine)

My system configuration is
Ubuntu 18.04 with most recent updates
HPLIP version 3.21.2, scan utility version 2.2
HP Smart Tank Plus 555 firmware version POSPPWPP1N001.2051B.00
The HP printer/scanner is connected via USB

I scan the image with:
scanimage --mode color --resolution 1200 --format jpeg -l 0 -t 0 -x 88 -y 129 >
image.jpeg

scanimage terminates with the error message „Application transfered too
few scanlines“

The scanned image has indeed missing pixels at the end of the
file/image. The issue occures only with 1200 dpi, not with 600 dpi or
300 dpi. Since I hade no issue in the past with my former HP
printer/scanner or lower resolutions I believe this issue is very likely
related to HPLIP and/or the HP Smart Tank Plus 555 device.

Would be great if one of the developers could take care of this issue
and hopefully provide a bug fix.

Best regards,
Helmut

[Bug 1899159] Autopkgtest regression report (python3.9/3.9.5-3~20.04.1)

2021-05-21 Thread Ubuntu SRU Bot
All autopkgtests for the newly accepted python3.9 (3.9.5-3~20.04.1) for focal
have finished running.
The following regressions have been reported in tests triggered by the package:

python3.9/3.9.5-3~20.04.1 (arm64, amd64)

Please visit the excuses page listed below and investigate the failures,
proceeding afterwards as per the StableReleaseUpdates policy regarding
autopkgtest regressions [1].

[Bug 1929125] Re: lib32z1 cannot be installed on ubuntu 20.04 LTS

2021-05-21 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for taking your time to report this issue and help making Ubuntu
better.

I was unable to reproduce this issue, in fact I could install lib32z1
without problems on my 20.04 system. I have a couple of comments though.

>lib32z1 (https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/lib32z1) depends on
libc6-i386 (>= 2.4)

Indeed.

>but the latest version of libc6-i386 I can find for Ubuntu is (..)
impish

So the first thing is that when installing packages on 20.04 it will look in
its archives, not other releases. So it will find version 2.31-0ubuntu9.2 from
focal-updates without looking at what is available in newer releases.
Also, keep in mind that the second number in (>= 2.4) is 4 not 40. So
2.31-0ubuntu9.2 should be more that enough to satisfy this requirement because
31 > 4 :)

Despite all this I see that you still get an error message. Based on the
output from `apt policy` I thought this should work. What you can try is
`sudo apt update` to refresh the package list. If the problem still
persists, try to see if you can install libc6-i386 directly. You may get
either a more detailed error message or it will suggest to remove other
packages due to conflicts. Sometimes with unmet dependencies the problem
can be further down the dependency tree so it might take some drilling
to discover what the problem is, for instance if it is due to conflicts
with other installed packages.

First time posting on this forum; apologize in advance if I am not doing
this right.

I have the same problem. I have three monitors (1 4k, 2 1080p [1 16:10

  2. Proceed to the step "Who are you?"
  3. Enter the user and computer information. For the computer name, you must
use the FQDN.
  4. Check box "Use Active Directory" and press continue.
  5. Enter the address of the Active Directory controller and credentials of
the user allowed to add machines to the domain.
  6. Verify that the server is reachable by pressing "Test Connection".

to proceed with the remaining usual steps of the installation.
  8. At the end of the installation you can reboot the machine and you are
ready to log in as a user of the domain on first boot

  [Where problems could occur]

If the python code and debconf templates, Ubiquity won't start at all or
the user info page will not be displayed. So it will highly visible and
  easy to diagnose.

Otherwise, SSSD and Kerberos may not be configured correctly and will
prevent login as an AD user. In this case, we still keep the local user
and it is possible to log in and diagnose and fix the issue.

  [Other Info]
Built and tested on latest focal daily image.

  [regression potential]

any regression would likely result in incorrect values shown for
  some/all sensor readings

  [scope]

- this is not fixed upstream, so it needed in all releases
+ this was recently fixed upstream, so it needed in all releases
+ https://github.com/chu11/freeipmi-mirror/pull/43
+
+ a new upstream release was made including the fix, so debian will pick
+ it up in their next devel cycle

  [other info]

the problem is that this particular BMC has chosen to use a non-zero
'LUN' number for these sensors; almost all BMCs use the standard LUN
number 0, as the spec does state in section 19.3:

"Unless otherwise specified, commands that are listed as mandatory must
  be accessed via LUN 00b"

However the spec does allow for implementations to use alternate LUN
numbers, specifically section 5.4 describes how the BMC would report the
LUN number to the requesting software, and section 7.2 clarifies that
while LUN 00b is reserved for devices beloning to the BMC itself and 10b
is reserved for SMS messages, LUN numbers 01b and 11b are reserved for
'OEM' use. So it does appear valid for the BMC implementation to place
sensor(s) under LUN 01b instead of the default 00b.

The cause of the invalid sensor readings in this particular case is
because the BMC also defines sensors with the exact same sensor id
number, but with LUN 00b. So when freeipmi attempts to read e.g. 'DIMM
17 Temp' sensor, it actually reads the current value for a completely
different sensor, which (in this case) isn't even a temperature sensor,
resulting in invalid temperature reading shown for the sensor, instead
of showing it as N/A (since the DIMM slot isn't populated).

Note that ipmitool correctly uses the alternate LUN number so this bug
does not exist with that tool, this affects only freeipmi tooling.

[Bug 1929213] Re: Ubuntu server fails to install if boot is not on sda1

2021-05-21 Thread Bartosz Baranowski
Im thinkering with ubuntu server 20.10 from live USB.

I tried single drive install and it worked. Once it went live I tried minimal
setup on two SSDs( /boot, /boot/efi and encrypted LVM with rest on both). Not
sure if its relevant but I can see in crash report:
"adding partition 'partition-3' to disk "disk-sdb" (ptable: 'gpt')
partnum: 1 offset_Sectrors: 2048 length_sectors 500113407
Preparing partition location on disk /dev/sda

This fails with exist code: 4

For some reason Im not able to authorize apport. I will try to tinker
with single drive install and two. Will crash report be sufficient ?

I notice your first write() is on fd 3 while the 2nd is on stdout (while

And we need to make sure the server or client doesn't reject that
connection outright.

It would worth running "tshark -i any -f 'port 636'" in the mean time to
verify the "client hello" is sent and that the server is willing to
carry on the connection.

[Bug 1922342] Re: HIrsute live session takes ages to boot on BIOS systems

2021-05-21 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

Chris Guiver wrote:
> Delay occurs regardless of ISO being written using mkusb, dd, or gnome-
> disks..

Hmm. IIRC mkusb offers to unpack the ISO into a filesystem of the USB stick.
If the problem survives that conversion, then it is far inside the GRUB
equipment.

It should be possible to make experimental changes with the .cfg files of
such an USB stick.
(I can propose xorriso runs which repack an ISO to bear new .cfg content
and the same boot entry points as the original ISO. But directly editing
in a FAT filesystem would be much more straightforward.)

Being curious i looked into ubuntu-20.10-desktop-amd64.iso for occurences
of grub_platform and found in /boot/grub/grub.cfg

grub_platform
if [ "$grub_platform" = "efi" ]; then
menuentry 'Boot from next volume' {
exit
}

It could be that the complaint of GRUB is about the command grub_platform,
not about the use of $grub_platform.

I fail to find the implementation of the command in a freshly pulled GRUB git.
(Other known commands have a call to grub_register_command() with their
name as argument. grub_platform has not.)

A first experiment would be to remove above snippet from grub.cfg and
to check whether its presence caused the long delay.

--
Red herring warning:

The documentation about "normal" mode and grub_platform might be not helpful
for understanding our special problem. Possibly its text describes not the
work of the command but only the situation when it is _not_ needed.

Maybe GRUB is not running in "normal" mode, or maybe grub_platform updates the
variable, which is set at initialization time in grub-core/normal/main.c
from macro GRUB_PLATFORM:

GRUB_MOD_INIT(normal)
{
  ...
  grub_env_set ("grub_platform", GRUB_PLATFORM);
  ...

That macro seems to be set by the compile time configuration of GRUB in
./configure which is supposed to stem from configure.ac

GRUB_PLATFORM="${platform}"
...
AC_SUBST(GRUB_PLATFORM)

The variable platform is set in the same file, either from option
--with-platform or from automatic detection

# Guess the platform if not specified.
if test "x$with_platform" = x; then
  case "$target_cpu"-"$target_vendor" in
...
x86_64-apple) platform=efi ;;
x86_64-*) platform=pc ;;
...

So i'd assume that if /boot/grub/grub.cfg expects the possibility to see
"efi", then GRUB would have to be compiled with --with-platform=efi .
Meanwhile the GRUB in Ubuntu ISOs serves both, EFI and legacy BIOS.
I wonder how this is supposed to play with the compile time setting.

There is a compile time variable GRUB_PLATFORMS:
  https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GRUB2_Quick_Start#Installing_GRUB2_software
"To install GRUB2, first set the GRUB_PLATFORMS variable with one or more
appropriate values in the system's make.conf. If unset, GRUB2 will guess
which platform to use on the system. It guesses pc (which is the MBR
style of installation) for x86/amd64 architectures."
But the relation of the single value GRUB_PLATFORM and the value list in
GRUB_PLATFORMS is not clear to me.

The GRUB manual talks in singular, not in plural:
  https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub/grub.html#grub_005fplatform
"In normal mode (see normal), GRUB sets the ‘grub_platform’ variable to
the platform for which GRUB was built (e.g. ‘pc’ or ‘efi’).

So this could want to say that each GRUB can serve in normal mode only one
platform. But the ISO wants to serve two of them. That would be a reason
not to run GRUB in normal mode.

In 2012 Vladimir Serbinko, then maintainer of GRUB, surely expected that
the ISO produced by grub-mkrescue can boot on "efi" and "pc" alike.
We discussed how xorriso should combine MBR boot code and GPT in one ISO.

:End of red herring warning.

[Bug 1898593] Re: Fix sphinx doc building

2021-05-21 Thread Utkarsh Gupta
Hello,

Thanks, Athos. I've removed G/H tasks atm and Impish is marked as "Fix
Released", which appropriately represents the current situation.

Yeah, I agree that it might not be worth SRU'ing and at least, adding to
the already-long team backlog. As for lintian errors, I think it's worth
forwarding the bug to Debian instead since this is a sync now.

In case you feel differently, please let me know. Thanks.

[Bug 1898593] Re: Fix sphinx doc building

2021-05-21 Thread Athos Ribeiro
The lintian fixes are not fixed. We'd need to add a dependency on that
JS lib. Should we split the bug or just reopen it?

About the sphinx documentation, pre-built manpages are still being
shipped, so I am not really sure if this would be a good candidate for
an SRU.

[Bug 1929106] Re: runc -v empty output

2021-05-21 Thread Utkarsh Gupta
Hello Kir,

Thanks for taking out time to file this bug and help make Ubuntu server
better.

I can very easily reproduce the problem and indeed this is weird. This
bug is present since Bionic, at the very least. I'm marking this as
"Confirmed" and tagging "server-next" for someone from our team to work
on this. Subsequently, I am also marking this as of "low" importance.

Thanks!
