[Bug 1947860] Re: qemu-arm-static swallows the program name, and shifts all arguments left

2021-11-07 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Thanks for the check Daniel!

Hi Seth,
if you consider getting an RPI (or any other) cross-arch image chrooted or to
run debootstrap is probably equally complex - and preference lies in what you
do more often or already have around. But thanks for the hint on test
alternatives.

BTW - I have resolved the reported autopkgtest issue on casper, this is
now ready to go once matured enough. Given the natural complexity of
this I'm happy for every other testing feedback.

Description of problem:

When using NetworkManager to connect to a VPN where OpenVPN pushes DNS
configuration from the server (via the dhcp-option setting), these
servers are correctly added to /etc/resolv.conf. However, since Fedora
33, the default for name resolution is systemd-resolved, which appears
to ignore /etc/resolv.conf and the configured name servers are not used.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

NetworkManager-openvpn-1:1.18.12-1.fc33.1

How reproducible:

Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Connect to an OpenVPN network that configures custom name servers via
dhcp-option
2. Observe that these name servers are added to /etc/resolv.conf
3. Try to resolve internal names only served by the custom name servers

Actual results:

Name resolution fails as systemd-resolved ignores the configured name
servers

Expected results:

The configured name servers are used and internal names resolve
successfully

Additional info:

As a workaround, systemd-resolved can be circumvented by adding
"dns=default" to the [main] section in
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

there are various ways how DNS (with or without NetworkManager) can be
configured.

Also, it doesn't seem you are using the default configuration of Fedora
33, where systemd-resolved is used. So, to fully understand the problem,
you would have to provide how your system is configured.

For example,

with systemd-resolved, commonly /etc/resolv.conf would be symlinked to a
file as explained in `man systemd-resolved`. In that case systemd-
resolved will mostly ignore /etc/resolv.conf, and /etc/resolv.conf is
commonly not used by glibc resolver (which -- depending on your
configuration -- uses NSS modules to directly talk to systemd-resolved
(`man nsswitch.conf`)). Thus the symlinked /etc/resolv.conf is mostly
not used, but see how this works in `man systemd-resolved`.

Anyway. You need to share how exactly your system is configured.

Possibly, just collect a complete level=TRACE log that shows the issue.
Read
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/tree/contrib/fedora/rpm/NetworkManager.conf#n28
for hints about logging (and note the comment about private data in log
files).

The system I am working with has been upgraded from F32.
/etc/resolv.conf is a symlink to /var/run/NetworkManager/resolv.conf. It
seems to me that in this case systemd-resolved should be in "consumer"
mode and use the nameservers provided there (as stated in the fourth
bullet point in the /etc/resolv.conf section of the systemd-resolved man
page), but that doesn't seem to happen.

If I use any of the other options listed in that manpage as link targets
for /etc/resolv.conf, and connect to the VPN, name resolution for
internal names still fails. systemd-resolved doesn't seem to learn about
the new servers, so the stub resolver won't resolve those names, and
they don't get added to /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf either.
/var/run/NetworkManager/resolv.conf appears to be the only place where
they show up.

My nsswitch.conf provides the following configuration for gethostbyname:
files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] resolve [!UNAVAIL=return]
myhostname dns

Also 'virt' memory is not real and should be ignored.

I can't tell what you mean by "reserved" memory but next time you
encounter the problem please run:

2021-11-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report.

First please look in $HOME/.local/share/gnome-shell and ensure there is
no directory named 'extensions'. If there is one then remove it and log
in again.

Similarly please open the 'Extensions' app and ensure you only find the
three Ubuntu extensions listed.

[Bug 1875172] Re: geoclue polls wpasupplicant SSID list too often, resulting in lag and packet loss

2021-11-07 Thread tomdryer
I was getting poor latency on my system with an "Intel Corporation
Wireless 8265 / 8275" adapter because Geoclue was initiating scans
nearly continuously. This is caused by a bug which was fixed in a
Geoclue 2.5.7:

Ubuntu 20.04 is still affected because the latest available version is

[Bug 1898005] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT in st_bin_destroy: assertion failed: (priv->child == NULL) called from DesktopManager::_destroyDesktopIcons() [desktopManager.js:234]

2021-11-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Steve,

IIRC this crash was fixed by *either* the gnome-shell or extension fix.
So the original test case would fail only while *neither* of the two
fixes were applied.

The gnome-shell fix made the shell API more robust so as to protect
itself from crashing in the presence of a buggy extension.

The gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons fix corrects the buggy
extension. This is still worthwhile because it fixes a sudden and
unnecessary spike of memory and CPU usage from unthrottled timer
duplication. That IIRC could still cause instability in the
extension/shell based on my memory of testing a year ago. However I've
tried stress testing both with and without the fix on focal today and
can't see any practical difference in performance. Only technically we
shouldn't declare the fix as "released" until the series file is
corrected to apply the patch.

[Bug 1949909] Re: Bluetooth crashes on resume from suspend

2021-11-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks but none of those crashes are related to BlueZ. And even if you
did have a BlueZ crash it wouldn't cause the computer to stop
responding.

If you can't find any more error reports like above then please:

1. Reproduce the bug again.

2. Reboot.

3. Run:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

4. Attach the resulting text file here.

[Bug 1950107] [NEW] Ubuntu MATE 20.04.3 window-list crashed

2021-11-07 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

I got an error pop-up about a program crashing. I did not recognize the
name as pertaining to Ubuntu MATE, so I closed it. The list of windows
at the bottom of the screen was blank. Google how to reset the Windows
List Manager. Dic alt-cntl-F2. Then the display went black (no signal).
Had to turn off (without shutting down - blank screen). Had to reboot.
Tried to report bug but was told that although it is in the distro, it
is not supported (like Caja).

[Bug 1876334] Re: [Focal] zsys still offers auto snapshotting when reach near full disk space

I just ran into this bug with Zsys 0.4.8:

❯ apt search zsys
Sorting... Done

zsys/focal-updates,now 0.4.8 amd64 [installed]

I was unable to run `apt upgrade` because of a full `bpool`. Based on
what I'm reading here that shouldn't have happened. I manually deleted
my system snapshots and the problem was fixed.

[Bug 1923459] Re: evince doesn't show filename or PDF title on the title bar

2021-11-07 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This is reported at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/-/issues/1583
(thanks to Michaël Berteaux @Mikenux at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/-/issues/996).

The bug is solved in Evince 40.2, and it looks like Ubuntu 21.10 has
Evince 40.4-2, which would include the fix.

However, this is worth backporting, please: it's really a weird nuisance
for one of the core applications on a desktop computer.

[Bug 1950087] Re: ubuntu 21.10 live usb does not recognize Razer Blade 15 (2021) nvme drive (possible kernel bug)

2021-11-07 Thread JC Reus
** Description changed:

I am attempting to install Ubuntu on to a new Razer Blade 15 Advanced
(mid-2021) laptop. However, there seems to be some issues with kernel
compatibility. When installing 20.04 LTS I have many issues with
hardware not being detected (especially the intel AX210 wifi card).
Running the 21.10 release from a live usb happily detected all of my
hardware out of the box, with one show-stopping exception.. the internal
- nvme drive is NOT visible at all.
+ nvme drive is not visible at all.

I have tried every combination of bios options imaginable, as well as
multiple Ubuntu-based distros such as Kubuntu, Pop!OS and Ubuntu Studio
  - all with the same results: 20.04 LTS detects the internal nvme and
will install, but lacks important hardware support - while 21.10
(running in live mode) is compatible with all the essential hardware out
of the box, but does not "see" the internal nvme.

+ My short-term solution has been to install a 20.04 release using a wired
+ internet connection, followed by upgrading to 21.04. This configuration
+ then works, however if I upgrade again to 21.10 the internal drive again
+ becomes undetectable, making it impossible to boot the OS.
+
This seems to be an emerging issue.. see:
  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1370379/21-10-does-not-see-windows-nvme-
  drive/1374079?noredirect=1#comment2364713_1374079
-
- And the current consensus seems to be that it is a kernel bug.

[Bug 1950095] Re: [github] 20.04: Apt fails to download URLs with non-encoded querystrings

2021-11-07 Thread David Kalnischkies
"minimal potential for causing regressions" is a big claim given I had
to fix regressions in later commits like
149b23c2b9697bc262c0af1934c7a3f6114d903f and
2b0369a5d1673d9e40f2af4db7677b040a26ee58. There might be more, that is
just what I remember directly. It is certainly not the most complicated
code in the world, but it's quite a bit of it as I was not trying for
minimal, but instead maximized for forward and backward compat.

(Disclaimer: I am the upstream author of the patch set in question. Not
involved enough with Ubuntu to know and/or predict if this qualifies or
not for backport, so not commenting on that part. Pretty sure Debian
would refuse if we tried including that in a stable update through).

[Bug 1950099] Re: Accessibility. No sound sof-firmware driver when installing ubuntu mate 21.10 on HP Pavilion Laptop PC 15-eg0000 (172Z8AV)

2021-11-07 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1950099/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1950102] [NEW] Evolution in 20.04 LTS error connection to Google Contacts API

Public bug reported:

Upstream bug fix identified here:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution-data-server/-/commit/d63a1ce3921a6a6c573a6a

When opening Evolution connected to Google Mail account, you see a
"Contacts API is deprecated" error. This is a change in the past month
or so (october 2021?) from the google side.

evolution-data-server has been patched by Gnome devs on version 3.42.0,
but not for the older version in LTS.

[Bug 1935770] Re: [Sound Output Built in Speaker to HDMI] No auto switch from Speaker to HDMI and back

2021-11-07 Thread forteller
Some times I do the following: I connect my laptop to a screen with HDMI
cable and in the settings set audio output to the HDMI. Later I
disconnect the HDMI cable without doing anything to the sound settings
and turn off the PC. When I turn on the PC again it thinks that the
sound should still go to the HDMI, even though it's no longer connected.
Going in to the sound settings the Output Device drop-down is blank, so
it obviously knows that the HDMI is disconnected, but it just doesn't
make any sound.

That's the main issue I have. Not switching to HDMI sound on connecting
the HDMI might be the best default, I'm not sure, but at least you might
have some other preference for where you want your sound to come from
when you connect it. But when you disconnect, the sound can no longer
come from the HDMI, so you never want it to keep to the HDMI output, you
always want it to switch to something else.

My intuition about what should happen when you connect HDMI: If the
current output is trough built in speakers it should automatically
switch to HDMI. If the current output is trough mini-jack or other
output (meaning the person is using a headset or external speakers), it
should keep the current setting and not switch to HDMI.

2021-11-07 Thread Vsevolod Popov
Public bug reported:

When installing ubuntu mate 21.10, there are no sof-firmware drivers in the

installation cannot install ubuntu mate 21.10 on his machine.
However, this issue doesn't happen on ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

[Bug 1917152] Re: File moved with Cut-Paste from a search filter still appears on original screen and if deleted disappears from new folder

2021-11-07 Thread Xavier Guillot
It seems that search results are given by Tracker, which is a separate
app dedicated to searching. This is a config option / design choice.

To fix this, Nautilus would need to ping D-Bus that the file has moved,
Tracker see's this event and updates it's cache and again notifies D-Bus
that this event has happened.

Nautilus needs to subscribe to this (not just a one time fetch) and
update any view which shows this file.

I am in the same situation as you, since I also need to be on 18.04 for now.

I am having trouble with the display driver as well. My model is equipped with
an NVIDIA T500 (same as yours), but installing any NVIDIA display driver higher
than version 390 fails and drops be in tty mode.
Have you had success with using display drivers other than nomodeset?

[Bug 1941752] Re: Regression: exiv2 0.27.3-3ubuntu1.5 makes Gwenview crash when opening images exported by darktable

2021-11-07 Thread Robert Miller
This is not just darktable.

I have files that work fine, while some other always crash. The only
constant is that all files were created on a Nikon camera.

Files that crash include some, but not all: Raw NEF; JPEGs created by
processing NEF files on Windows using Nikon software; JPEGs created
directly by camera. If I take a jpeg file that crashes, convert it to
bmp or tiff, and try to open with gwenview, the file still crashes. That
also points to the exiv bug. When run on a konsole, the crash is always:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::out_of_range'
  what(): basic_string::at: __n (which is 19) >= this->size() (which is 19)
KCrash: crashing... crashRecursionCounter = 2

[Bug 1950095] [NEW] [github] 20.04: Apt fails to download URLs with non-encoded querystrings

2021-11-07 Thread TJ
Public bug reported:

I've just helped a group of Ubuntu 20.04 users with Microsoft Surface
devices. They rely upon a github repository releases pocket as the apt
archive. Those users recently hit a bug "Ubuntu: Apt update fails with
Error 401 Unauthorized" [1]

The initial simple Github URL gets a Location: redirect to a complex URL
with un-escaped query-string. The resulting complex URL causes apt to
fail to fetch the resource.

$ sudo apt upgrade -y
Err:1 https://pkg.surfacelinux.com/debian release/main amd64 libwacom-surface
amd64 1.12-2
  401 Unauthorized [IP: 185.199.110.133 443]

The URL can be manually corrected. One of the Surface users provided
this example:

I found this also affects a github repository I recently added for
Zotero on 20.04.

The problem is fixed in later versions of apt upstream, in Debian and
Ubuntu releases. I cherry-picked the 4 commits [3] and provided a
package for Focal in my PPA [2] which multiple users have reported (in
[1]) solves the issue.

It would be really good to get those patches included in 20.04 as an
SRU.

As the code is in later versions of apt and is focused on the URL
encoding only it has minimal potential for causing regressions.

[Bug 1950093] [NEW] xdg autostart doesn't work without additional packages not listed as dependencies

2021-11-07 Thread Lithopsian
Public bug reported:

Openbox by default attempts to start applications that have appropriate
desktop files in /etc/xdg/autostart. It does this by executing xdg-
autostart if it is present, and if not then openbox-xdg-autostart. xdg-
autostart is in package obsession which is a recommended package for
openbox. openbox-xdg-autostart is in package openbox itself, but it
fails unless package python3-xdg is installed. The failure is
relatively silent unless openbox-xdg-autostart is run separately on the
command line. python3-xdg should probably be a suggested package, or
perhaps more strongly recommended, or perhaps even an either/or with
obsession since one of them is required for xdg autostart files to work.
This isn't exactly the end of the world since many xdg autostart
applications won't start for Openbox anyway. The openbox-session
manpage also doesn't mention that desktop files from /etc/xdg/autostart
will be run, so perhaps not many people will be surprised when they
don't

** Affects: openbox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1950092] [NEW] firefox: all bookmarks lost after snap upgrade to 701

2021-11-07 Thread Heinrich Schuchardt
Public bug reported:

Today Firefox was updated to snap version 701. After that:

* the toolbar settings are lost
* all bookmarks are lost

In my home directory I find:

.mozilla/firefox/iw40rvsn.default-release-1
.mozilla/firefox/yr14p2lb.default
.mozilla/firefox/k2x43jhu.default-release
.mozilla/firefox/53wtq3js.default-release-2

Why would the snap create a new profile?

Best regards

Heinrich

[Bug 1950088] Re: jammy: noveau driver hangs for minutes when Firefox is started (live cd/usb, MacBookPro6, 2)

2021-11-07 Thread Mikko Rantalainen
According to Apple Mac OS X info this hardware is as follows:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
CPU: 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
RAM: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
GPU: Intel HD Graphics, 288 MB

The hardware *also* has NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M connected (according to
OS X self-diagnostics) via 16x PCIe and it has 256 MB of RAM (Mac OS X
cannot tell if this is dedicated RAM or part of system RAM like with
integrated intel graphics).

I believe that the OS X automaticaly switches between these GPUs
according to system needs. I would guess that this is also tried by
Jammy livecd and it hangs. I guess for this old hardware, automatically
turning off the NVIDIA GPU and using just the Intel Graphics could be a
good option if the switching is not stable.

According to /proc/cpuinfo the Linux kernel successfully run the CPU up
to 3.1 GHz so CPU frequency control did work absolutely fine.

All the above tests were done with jammy nightly build from date
2021-11-05 obtained here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntukylin/daily-
live/current/ and I did write the ISO image to USB memory stick using
Ubuntu "Startup Disk Creator" software. I know that some newer MacBooks
no longer support booting from USB memory simply by holding down ALT
while booting the computer but for this hardware that still appears to
work just fine.
