[Bug 1966621] Re: Ubuntu Server 20.04.04 installer can't designate boot partition

2022-03-27 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on
Libera.chat.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1966621/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1966621] [NEW] Ubuntu Server 20.04.04 installer can't designate boot partition

2022-03-27 Thread ebsf
Public bug reported:

The installer for Ubuntu Server 20.04.4 has no ability to designate an
existing EFI system paretition as the boot partition.

The volume is already partitioned and has a valid 512MB EFI system
partition formatted as FAT32 and with type code ef00 at /dev/sda1. The
installer states that if this partition is selected as the boot
partition, GRUB will be installed there. Unfortunately, the option to
mount /boot is greyed out. Compounding the magnitude of the failure is
that no means exists or is documented to mount boot in this partition.
Obviously, the partition can't be deleted to accommodate this failure.

Expected behavior: The installer would recognize an existing formatted
EFI system partition with type code ef00 as the boot partition without
further configuration. The installer would go beyond saying what would
happen if such a partition was designated the boot partition, to
actually providing a means to make that designation, if the installer
wasn't up to the task.

What happened instead: Nothing. No progress is possible because the
installer can't accommodate an existing partition scheme.

[Bug 1966440] Re: gnome-shell crashes often when using the menu (start) button

2022-03-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The first crash in your log is bug 1782984. You can avoid that by
logging into 'Ubuntu on Wayland'.

The remaining crashes (signal 11) I can't yet identify so please follow these
instructions:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Responses#Missing_a_crash_report_or_having_a_.crash_attachment

Your package update problem seems to be caused by either:
 * PPAs
 * the 'proposed' pocket
 * a broken upgrade for other reasons.

If you can't fix it then please just reinstall Ubuntu from scratch and
be careful to never use PPAs and never enable 'proposed'.

[Bug 1965535] Re: Stop recommending snap

2022-03-27 Thread gui ambros
+1, I would also strongly prefer that Ubuntu stops adopting snap by
default, or at least give users the option to use other deb/apt
alternatives. I respect the work done by snap developers, but given its
current state breaking XDG standards, forced app updates, and impact on
size/performance, I don't believe it's ready for prime time (nor will be
anytime soon).

I've been a loyal Ubuntu user for almost 15 years, but this would make
me reconsider and switching to another distro. I don't say this as any
form of pressure, but to indicate how strongly I feel about this issue.
Judging by the size of this other thread [1], I'd venture many other
users feel equally about this.

[Bug 1966204] Re: Kubuntu jammy install hangs at creating ext4 filesystem (33%)

2022-03-27 Thread Philip Vetter
My version was downloaded
Saturday, March 26, 2022 5 AM UTC
and it fails with encrypted/unencrypted partitions of various types, including
XFS, btrfs, swap.

A comment on useability:
Currently all the status output of the disk manipulation attempts is filtered
into a single line on the bottom of the user interface. While more visually
appealing when successful, in cases of problems like this the user has no
information to diagnose the problem. Users have wasted hours trying different
permutations before realizing it is not their fault.

Question: I understand it will take a few days, but when the daily ISO
is fixed, how will we find out (so we don't have to try them all?)

[Bug 1964037] Re: gnome-shell crashes (fatal error logged in create_fallback_offscreen) when attempting to enable second monitor on second GPU (Nvidia >= 495) in a Wayland session

2022-03-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Certainly using nvidia-driver-470 will avoid this crash. Although
choosing 'Ubuntu on Xorg' at the login screen with nvidia-driver-510
should avoid it too.

P.S. GNOME Shell refers to the integrated GPU (Intel) as primary
(because it's attached to the screen), and the more powerful GPU
(usually not wired to the screen) is the secondary.

[Bug 1966221] Re: gnome-extensions-app crashes with "Segmentation fault (core dumped)"

2022-03-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I can't seem to reproduce the problem, and bug 1966443 doesn't appear to
be relevant. Please repeat the steps in comment #3...

My new theory is that the upgrade to Mesa 22 you mention in comment #5
is showing a crash in Mesa itself (which will crash GTK4 apps like
gnome-extensions-app). Because Ivy Bridge Intel GPUs like yours have
been switched to a new driver in Mesa 22 and we haven't had time to
really test that new driver yet.

[Bug 1966617] [NEW] Request to backport Fix for Swig when used with python 3.8+ https://github.com/swig/swig/pull/1587/files

2022-03-27 Thread theofficialgman
Public bug reported:

https://github.com/swig/swig/pull/1587/files

this is a simple change to the swig source that fixed autogenerated files when
used with python3.8.
Ubuntu bionic has python 3.8 (in addition to 3.6 and 3.8) and causes errors
when swig with it installed.

The PyObject_GC_UnTrack macro got deprecated in 3.6 and finally removed
in 3.8. Thus for all python versions >= 3.6 instead used
PyObject_GC_UnTrack.

[Bug 1966613] [NEW] Navigating with arrow keys broken for RTL text

2022-03-27 Thread Yotam Benshalom
Public bug reported:

RTL text renders fine, and navigating within a line with the arrow keys
works as expected. However, using the left and right arrow keys to move
to the next or previous lines is broken.

To reproduce:
1. Open gnome-text-editor and paste the following into its window:
זוהי השורה הראשונה
זוהי השורה השנייה
זוהי השורה השלישית
make sure it is aligned to the right, as it should.
2. place the caret in the middle of the 2nd line.
3. With the arrows, move the caret to the left of the line (its end).
4. Press the left arrow key one more time.
Expected results:
1. The caret moves to the right hand side of the next line.
Actual results:
1. The caret moves to the left hand side of the previous line.

The same issue exists in reverse: if you move the caret with the arrow
keys to the right of the line (its beginning) and press the right arrow
key one more time, it will move to the right hand side of the next line
instead of the left hand side of the previous line, as it should.

This make navigation in RTL files highly uncomfortable.

[Bug 1833281]

2022-03-27 Thread hi-angel
Modern kernels handle SWAPPING situations much better.

Also, these days the Multi-LRU patchset should pretty much resolve the
problem. It is not yet upstream, but is used in downstream kernels such
as linux-zen and liquorix-kernel. There is hope it will be merged by
5.19¹

[Bug 1943124] Re: Upgrade fails due to "text file busy"

2022-03-27 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
Ah yes that would do it. I wonder how that symlink got there -- I'm
pretty sure it was not created by any official part of Ubuntu. (A bit of
googling finds people doing things like this
https://github.com/remap/ndnfs-port/issues/8 but it's not clear to me
where they got the idea from).

We might be able to add a check for this in preinst or something I
guess...

[Bug 1966530] Re: Locale missing in language list

2022-03-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Steve: Looks like we need your help to fix this.

Occitan was added to localechooser in 2.89ubuntu1 through the merge from
Debian. However, that was after the old way to have ubiquity import the
languagelist was broken, so it's still not in ubiquity.

The loose end in connection with bug #1943768, i.e. the two ubiquity
merge proposals linked to that bug, is related. You rejected my MP to
update the localechooser subtree from 2.89ubuntu3, while your own MP has
not yet been merged.

So any update of the languagelist is currently blocked, so to speak.
Please unblock it somehow.

Thank you so much for raising this bug. I have the same issue:

I just don't understand how it suddenly happened. Is it due to automatic

[Bug 1940665] Re: Lenovo Carbon X1 9th gen no longer powers off

2022-03-27 Thread Richard
To add here, I just started experiencing the same (or very similar)
issue on a X1 Carbon 9th Gen -- but when suspending rather than trying
to power off.

Closing the lid would appear to put the machine into suspend but:
  (1) it still runs --> gets hot in a bag --> eventually powers off due to
overheat (occurred several times over a period of a week)
  (2) lid open and touchpad movement would not reawaken the machine (which they
did before)

In my case it started with an update to `linux-image-5.14.0-1027-oem`
and persisted in 1029 after that. Reverting to `linux-
image-5.14.0-1024-oem` and booting that kernel removes the issue.

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2022-03-27 Thread Forest
The effectively forced use of Snap is what finally drove me to abandon
Ubuntu. This issue played a part in that.

To be clear, I am in favor of app isolation on desktop linux, and I find
container-based packaging useful in certain situations. However, the
Snap project has demonstrated over and over again that the people
driving it fail to grasp important issues like user agency and open
systems. Like Alex, I find the result intolerable. Being rid of it was
worth the temporary pain of switching distros.

So long, Ubuntu, and thanks for all the fish.

As already stated, the bug has a fix committed to -proposed, but will
take some time to get to the daily ISO builds. This will happen one way
or another for the Beta later in the week.

this may or may not be related...
upon restarting from the live usb, it got through the remove medium and hit
enter to restart message... then got stuck on a kill pid[4395]ntfsresize, it
repeated this over and over I could not even get it to accept a ctrl-alt-F3 to
get to a terminal.
I had to shut off the power to the system to get it to shut down...

[Bug 1966604] Re: [USB-Audio - ICUSBAUDIO7D, playback] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2022-03-27 Thread John Paul Morrison
I managed to get the card back with pulseaudio:

- logout of desktop session/xrdp
- systemctl restart xrdp
- unplug usb sound card from Ubuntu (this is not a usb redirection issue)
- login to xrdp
- run pulseaudio-dlna python script (not sure if it's related but was running
previously for dlna, chromecast)
- run: pacmd unload-module module-udev-detect && pacmd load-module
module-udev-detect

output: Module module-udev-detect not loaded.

After that pulseaudio shows the device and works again

working card
