[Bug 1676164] Re: REQ: firefox-esr package needed

2017-12-15 Thread Adam Porter
Unbelievable: Canonical has released Firefox 57, which no longer
supports XUL extensions (i.e. the ones in use since Firefox was created,
and when Trusty was released), in 14.04 Trusty. This is breaking users'
Firefox installations in a "Long Term Support" release. And still no
official ESR package.

This is absolutely unacceptable. Ubuntu LTS releases can no longer be
taken seriously. Back to Debian for me (a long time coming, but this is
like the last straw). 10 years ago, Ubuntu was doing good work, making
up for many of Debian's desktop weaknesses, but now Ubuntu isn't even
trustworthy. Debian would never do something like this.

[Bug 1629607] [NEW] Privacy settings reset to default on upgrade

2016-10-01 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Trusty 14.04
Firefox 49.0

For some time now I have noticed that every time I upgrade Firefox, my
profile's privacy settings are reset to default. For a while I didn't
know why they were being reset, so I put a script in a cron job (see
attachment) to monitor them and alert me when they changed. Since doing
that I have realized that they are reset when I upgrade Firefox.

This is a serious violation of user trust and privacy. Users may have
their preferences set to not save history, to not save cookies, to
delete them upon exit, etc, but after installing a routine upgrade to
Firefox (which happens every few weeks), their privacy settings will be
reset to "Firefox will: Remember history", and the user will not be
informed of this.

I don't know if the cause lies in Firefox itself or in the Ubuntu
packaging, but this needs to be fixed.

[Bug 1425691] [NEW] Should depend on libdbd-sqlite3, not merely suggest it

2015-02-25 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

I installed gnucash on a different computer and copied my gnucash config
and data files to it. When I tried to open my data file, it said, "no
suitable backend was found for file." The only file type available to
choose from in the Open dialog was "file." I had to google the error to
find a page on a Fedora forum where a user explained that he had to
install a package for gnucash to work with its own SQLite-format files.

In Ubuntu the package is libdbd-sqlite3. The gnucash package "Suggests"
it, but it should Depend on it. It's required to use GnuCash's own file
format. And if it's not installed, and the user tries to open such a
file, the user is left with little clue as to the solution.

[Bug 1378789] Re: [SRU] Set the default IO scheduler to CFQ in Kubuntu Trusty

2015-02-13 Thread Adam Porter
Thank you for making this change, finally.

I'd just like to point out that Baloo is far from the only thing that
uses ionice. mlocate even uses it by default when it's available. I
also use it extensively in backup scripts and other long-running
background operations. I even use it for Dropbox (which does a lot of
I/O on startup).

Frankly, I consider it a bug that deadline doesn't support ionice.
Desktop systems commonly have background I/O operations running
nowadays, and ionice is crucial for preventing such operations from
harming interactive responsiveness. It's my understanding that deadline
was only intended for servers and SSDs in the first place, so perhaps
its use in other Ubuntu variants on HDDs should be revisited

Or we could use BFQ on desktops and kiss all these problems goodbye...if
only the kernel team would build it... (I've tried applying the patches
to a current Ubuntu kernel, but it's a real mess since they aren't kept
in sync. If the kernel team would build it with the kernel--not
necessarily set it as default, just build it--then people could use it,
experiment with it, and gather data about it. Just watch the videos
made by the BFQ devs on YouTube--they clearly show that it's worth it!)

[Bug 1371274] Re: Unable to use the widevine plugin with chromium

2014-12-14 Thread Adam Porter
> Because Chromium developers want their browser to be free from digital
restrictions, this bug will stay unfixed for Ubuntu too.

What difference does that make? It's not "their browser." Chromium is
free software, and Ubuntu can patch it however it pleases.

What would serve users better: to be able to use this plugin in
Chromium, or to have no choice but to use the Google-built Chrome
package and its proprietary code?

The answer to that question is clear, and therefore the right thing to
do is also clear: apply a patch to Chromium in Ubuntu when a patch
becomes available. It makes no sense to WONTFIX this bug. WONTFIX is
an anti-user attitude that doesn't belong in Ubuntu or any other free
software Linux distro.

[Bug 1323624] [NEW] Unresponsive CIFS mounts block unrelated I/O

2014-05-27 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

If I have a CIFS mount, and then that mount's server goes down, other
file operations on my client system block until the Samba server comes
back up. This causes extremely weird behavior, things like right-click
menus not disappearing, mouse clicks in X not working at all while
keyboard input does work, plasma-desktop fails to finish loading its
configuration, resulting in half-empty panels and no wallpaper, etc.

I will try to illustrate:

$ grep cifs /etc/fstab
//server/Downloads /mnt/downloads   cifsuser,guest,noauto

$ mount /mnt/downloads

$ dolphin /mnt/downloads

$ ssh root@server "service smbd stop"

$ lsof | grep downloads
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() cifs file system /mnt/downloads
  Output information may be incomplete.
[lsof blocks here]

At this point, the weird bugs begin happening: Dolphin blocks when I
right-click in its window. This leaves a blocked right-click menu
(which is sometimes invisible, sometimes visible but empty, and
sometimes a solid gray rectangle), and this blocked right-click menu
grabs mouse clicks in X, preventing me from clicking anything else in X,
while the keyboard continues working. At this point I kill Dolphin from
a terminal using the keyboard, but plasma-desktop is still not
responding to mouse clicks. So I kill and restart plasma-desktop from a
terminal, but when it loads, it doesn't load completely, leaving a half-
empty panel with missing applets, and no wallpaper--and still no
response to mouse clicks.

But it's not all about X apps. Even /bin/df blocks. At one point, I
wondered if my system had somehow run out of disk space, which can cause
weird behavior, so I ran df. But df just sat there, with no output
whatsoever.

And after all this, when I do:

$ ssh root@server "service smbd start"

Everything suddenly unblocks and works fine again.

It seems to me that having kernel CIFS mounts cause blocking in
unrelated I/O is a major bug, potentially a security bug due to the
denial-of-service issue. The way it causes an apparently inexplicable
chain of weird behavior in all sorts of programs makes it very difficult
to debug.

CIFS mounts are LAN mounts. It seems like a simple solution would be to
have a very short timeout, 1-2 seconds or so. If it times out, just
return an error and let the apps blocking on that I/O get on with what
they're doing. The current behavior means that using kernel CIFS mounts
is a recipe for disaster.

Please fix this in Trusty. It's extremely frustrating to have Digikam
crash when I'm in the middle of organizing photos, especially since it's
not a bug in Digikam itself. Trusty is going to be around for years, so
this really needs to be fixed. And Digikam is probably not the only
software crashing because of this issue.

[Bug 1320403] [NEW] update-mime-database thrashes hard disk

Public bug reported:

After upgrading my machines to Trusty, I have noticed that when I

[Bug 1163501] Re: java crashed with SIGABRT in soup_session_feature_detach()

2014-05-16 Thread Adam Porter
After upgrading my machines to Trusty, I can no longer run
CrashPlanDesktop, the UI for the CrashPlan backup service.

war59312's workaround does seem to work. It's not necessary to stop and
restart the service, because it's completely separate from the UI app.
Simply run this command to add the workaround to the config file, and
then run CrashPlanDesktop:

$ sed -i
's/GUI_JAVA_OPTS="/GUI_JAVA_OPTS="-Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.DefaultType=mozilla
/' /usr/local/crashplan/bin/run.conf

I just submitted a support ticket to Code42 (Request #471934) detailing
the bug and providing links to this and other bug reports. Hopefully
they will fix it soon, and then the workaround can be removed.

Very disappointing to encounter this unfixed bug more than a year after
it was first reported. But thankfully, open bug trackers like this make
it easy to collaborate on fixes.

This happens over and over on Ubuntu bug reports: they languish for
years, then someone comes along and marks them invalid for the sake of
tidying up the bug tracker. But said someone doesn't even put forth
minimal effort to check the bug's status; instead they whack everything
over a certain age with their "invalid stick." This is insulting to the
reporter who spent his valuable time contributing a detailed bug report
to the project.

As a result, people like myself, who have reported hundreds of bugs,
decide to no longer do so, because it is ultimately a waste of their

Re: [Bug 575749] Re: umount buffer overflow

2013-10-11 Thread Adam Porter
I don't know.  It's been three years, and I haven't burned a DVD in a
long time. The kernel has changed a lot since then, too. I honestly
don't have time to test it right now, so I guess you might as well
expire the bug.

[Bug 1232161] [NEW] LibreOffice, Okular print offset high and right; Acroread prints correctly

2013-09-27 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

I've been using this printer on Ubuntu for several years. It's always
worked great.

Since upgrading to Raring, every document I print with LibreOffice or
Okular prints offset high and to the right. But if I save the same ODT
document to a PDF from LibreOffice, and then print it with Adobe Acrobat
Reader in Ubuntu, it prints correctly.

I have tried deleting the printer in CUPS and readding it, and I have
tried purging and reinstalling the Brother printer driver packages, but
neither made any difference.

I have three Ubuntu Raring systems printing to this printer, and all
three exhibit this bug.

This is very frustrating, because it used to work perfectly, and now I
have to jump through extra hoops just to print like I used to.

Please help me debug and fix this.

Yes, I experience that bug. But I still have this bug too. I had to

[Bug 1221520] Re: Blank pages inserted in duplex print job

2013-09-07 Thread Adam Porter
Tobias,

Thanks for pointing that out. I don't know how I managed to confuse red
with green. I think it was late. :)

Till,

I understand what you're saying. It would definitely not be helpful for
two copies of a 3 page document to be printed on only 3 sheets of paper
if you wanted to hand out two copies of it.

What I've been doing for some time now is printing custom graph paper
templates. It was a tremendous help to have a duplex printer so it
would print on both sides of the paper without requiring me to take the
printed paper and put it back into the printer for a second print job.
I've been doing this for so long that it never occurred to me that, if I
wanted to print two copies of a one-page document for distribution to
two people, this would require me to submit two print jobs instead of
submitting one job for two copies.

However, for my needs, the "buggy" behavior is what I actually need. Is
there any way I can preserve this behavior? Do I need to maintain a
patch and build the package for myself? Maybe I can find a way to turn
the PDFs into two-page documents with both pages identical, but this
would have to be done for every new template, so it would be much less
convenient.

Thanks to both of you for your help.

[Bug 1221520] Re: Blank pages inserted in duplex print job

2013-09-05 Thread Adam Porter
Upon further investigation, this appears to be a regression. Rev 7036
 added a
single line: "outputno++;":

  if (param.mirror) {
curpage->mirror();
  }
  outputno++;  // line added
  proc.add_page(curpage,param.reverse); // reverse -> insert at beginning
}
  }

 However, looking at the latest revision
, that
line appears to have moved:

  if (param.mirror) {
 curpage->mirror();
// TODO? update rect? --- not needed any more
  }
  proc.add_page(curpage,param.reverse); // reverse -> insert at
beginning
}
outputno++;
curpage=proc.new_page(param.page.width,param.page.height);
  }

Interestingly, rev 7036 is not listed anywhere on that page. I'm no
expert, so maybe I'm misinterpreting it, but it suggests to me that
r7036 was effectively lost in a later merge, resulting in the crucial
line moving to the wrong place.

[Bug 1221520] [NEW] Blank pages inserted in duplex print job

2013-09-05 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

I have a Brother HL2270DW printer. I've been using it in Ubuntu since I
got it a few years ago. It's always worked fine.

Lately, however, it has been inserting a blank page between pages in
duplex jobs. For example, if I print two copies of a one-page document
with duplex on, it used to print on both sides of one sheet of paper;
but now it prints on one side, takes the paper back in as if to print on
the back side, spits it out with the back side blank, and then does the
same routine on a second sheet of paper. I think it started happening
when I upgraded from Quantal to Raring. I haven't been printing a lot
lately, so I haven't noticed it until now.

I found Bug #292, which seems like the same bug, however 1) I have
no "scale to fit" option checked or even available in any of the print
dialogs I've been using, both in CUPS itself, in LibreOffice, and in
Okular; and 2) I am having this problem with Raring, even though that
bug indicates it should be fixed in Raring.

On a hunch, I downgraded the cups-filters package (not the cups package)
to the version from Quantal, then restarted CUPS, and the problem went
away. I also had to install libqpdf8 from Quantal to fulfill the
dependencies of that version of cups-filters.

cups-filters:
  Installed: 1.0.24-2
  Candidate: 1.0.34-0ubuntu1.1

  Installed: 3.0.2-1
  Candidate: 3.0.2-1
  Version table:
 *** 3.0.2-1 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

According to Bug #292, the problem should have been fixed in cups-
filters 1.0.30. I'm guessing that either a) somehow the fix didn't make
it into 1.0.30 after all; or b) Ubuntu's package somehow missed the fix,
despite the newer upstream version; or c) it's regressed since 1.0.30;
or d) this is a similar but unrelated bug.

Thankfully I've been able to work around it by using the old version of
the package, but who knows if that will work in Saucy. Please let me
know how I can help fix this bug.

[Bug 1035755] Re: [firefox] Extension causes context/drop down menus to disappear

2013-09-05 Thread Adam Porter
Thank you, Joseph. This should be made the default for all package
upgrades and new installs until this bug is conclusively fixed.

By the way, using libdbusmenu-qt2 0.9.2+13.10.20130826-0ubuntu1 (version
number bloat, anyone?) from Saucy has NOT fixed the bug. After a few
hours, the menus have stopped working again, immediately after I opened
a menu from the add-on bar. The menu's outline is visible for a split
second longer than it was when it was failing before, but it still
fails, and I still have to restart Firefox.

[Bug 1035755] Re: [firefox] Extension causes context/drop down menus to disappear

2013-09-04 Thread Adam Porter
I'm on Raring, and I had this bug many months ago, but I turned off the
global menu extension and was able to keep using Firefox.

Recently Firefox began having the same bug again, and I couldn't figure
out why. I even removed firefox-globalmenu, but it kept happening.
Then I noticed that there is no longer an extension listed for it in
Firefox, and then I noticed that firefox-globalmenu suddenly became a
transitional package--i.e. it's built into the Firefox package, and
there's no way to disable it anymore.

So that leaves me with two choices:

a. Restart Firefox many times per day.
b. Turn off global menu for all applications.

Neither of these are good choices.

Thankfully, the libdbusmenu-qt2 package for Saucy works in Raring and
seems to solve this bug.

Now I'm left with two questions:

1. When is the Raring package going to be upgraded? It's essential
that it is upgraded: this is a major regression that popped up without
warning in the middle of Raring's lifecycle.

2. Why was the globalmenu package merged into the main Firefox package?
Why is there no way to disable the global menu for Firefox? This
resulted in Firefox's context menus suddenly failing to work at all,
with no apparent explanation. On top of that, I had explicitly disabled
the global menu for Firefox, but this merge caused it to return without
my consent and without any way to disable it!

[Bug 273742] Re: Pulseaudio over wifi stutters horribly

2013-07-07 Thread Adam Porter
I figured out that Network Manager is what causes the scanning, and that
can be stopped by setting the BSSID of the connection in the Network
Manager settings. (In KDE there's a "Select" button next to the BSSID
field that fills this in automatically if you're already connected to
your AP.) Since the BSSID is set, you won't be roaming from one AP to
another, so NM doesn't scan for other APs with the same SSID.

So I set my BSSID and that has stopped the scans, which I think happened
every 120 seconds (according to the NM source). That has nearly
completely fixed the stuttering. Any stuttering that remains is much
less frequent and less severe; I'm not sure if it's network-related.

Here are some relevant bug reports:

This could also help if you need to disable it but forcing the BSSID
isn't an option:

[Bug 273742] Re: Pulseaudio over wifi stutters horribly

2013-07-07 Thread Adam Porter
For a few weeks I've been using PulseAudio network tunneling over wifi.
I've noticed that on a very regular interval the audio stutters for a
few seconds. I've been watching network traffic in KSysGuard, and I
noticed that the transmit rate is usually about 200 KB/sec, but when the
audio stutters, the transfer rate drops slightly. When that's the only
thing going on on my network, I can observe this happening at a
completely regular interval.

I finally figured out that it's caused by my laptop's wireless card
scanning for other networks. I can make it stutter in exactly the same
way on command by running "iwlist scan".

My laptop has an "Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG" network card,
and it uses the iwl4965 driver. Now my laptop very rarely moves
anywhere, and it is always on my home wifi network, so I don't need it
to scan for other networks. If I could simply disable scanning on my
laptop, it wouldn't stutter anymore.

Of course, more buffering in PulseAudio would help a little, but I think
all it would do is cause it to stutter a bit less often. Eventually the
stuttering would cause the buffer to empty, because it can't fill faster
than audio is being played. So it could stutter less often, for a
longer period of time, but it would still end up stuttering.

I've been googling around, trying to find a way to adjust the scan
interval, but I haven't found anything yet. I'm not sure if it's
controlled by wpa_supplicant or the driver. I've also seen that some
cards seem to support "background scanning" and others "progressive
scanning", and I don't know if one of those would mitigate it, or if my
card already does one of them.

Anyway, for anyone else who is having stuttering, if you're on wireless,
one cause of it is almost surely the scan interval. Find a way to fix
that and you may solve it.

[Bug 1128428] Re: linkhard option disappeared again

2013-07-04 Thread Adam Porter
It could cause dataloss across filesystems. The reporter in question
used it across chroots and symlinks and filesystems and it caused
problems with /lib on his main fs. For an average use case, like
deduplicating photos or music on a single filesystem, this is not an
issue, and hardlinks are very desirable.

A newer hardlinks patch set was posted at
, but it has sat
there for almost two years. It'd be very nice to have this feature
back.

There's another Debian bug about this feature's being re-added:

[Bug 655831] Re: update-apt-xapian-index bogs down system

2013-06-15 Thread Adam Porter
Still affecting Raring.

We've yet to receive an explanation of the rationale for this package
being installed by default (or even for its very existence). It's been
causing major usability problems for almost 3 years now. It's
unfathomable that it's installed on Ubuntu server VM images!

This is exactly the kind of problem that puts people off using Ubuntu
and drives them, bewildered, back to Windows, knowing nothing except
that "Linux is slow as molasses compared to Windows; randomly it will
get so slow I can't even watch a video on YouTube!"

Here are the packages that depend on or recommend apt-xapian-index:

$ apt-cache rdepends apt-xapian-index
apt-xapian-index
Reverse Depends:
  software-center
  muon-installer
  muon-discover
  muon
  synaptic
  packagesearch
  packagekit-backend-aptcc
  muon-installer
  muon-discover
  muon
  goplay
  fuss-launcher
  ept-cache
  software-center
  python-apt
  aptitude

What does it take to get something done about this? Should I upload
patches to these packages that removes it from their dependencies?

Re: [Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2013-06-14 Thread Adam Porter
It's very true that years ago I/O latency was much less of a problem
with Linux. When I first started using Debian full-time about ten
years ago, I never had problems with music skipping or anything like
that. I guess in the kernel development since then, throughput has
been prioritized over latency. Nowadays with 3.8 kernels and the same
hardware, it's trivial to make my music player skip under load, even
when its buffer is set to 3 ms.

I haven't thought of trying the lowlatency kernel, so thanks for that
idea. I will be trying that!

Besides that, I wish Ubuntu would make BFQ the default I/O scheduler
(or at least build it in by default so we can easily switch to it,
instead of having to build kernels or install from third-party repos).
 Check out this video from a year ago:

http://youtu.be/J-e7LnJblm8

Seems obvious to me that BFQ is the way to go for desktops.

I have noticed lately that Deadline seems to result in less music
skipping than CFQ, so I can see why Deadline is the default now. But
Deadline doesn't support ionice, so I can't do things like run backups
or upgrades in the background at minimum I/O priority.

You might be able to use the SAK keys to sync the hard disk, then
reboot and see if anything was logged. e.g. when the system freezes,
press:

Alt + SysRq + S U S B (hold down Alt+SysRq and press S U S B in order)

That should reboot the system. If not, use the reset button or
power-cycle it.  Then:

$ cd /var/log
$ ls -ltr

And see if anything useful was logged.

Hope this helps.

Bernardo,

Yes, as I've said in other reports we've discussed, I verified that
brcmsmac works with the BCM4313 card.

Unless there are other problems with brcmsmac and BCM4313 cards, users
should uninstall bcmwl and use brcmsmac. If there are other problems,
we need to get those bugs filed. Our goal needs to be to move to the
Free driver wherever possible. Staying on bcmwl is just asking for
trouble, as we've seen with all these recent regressions.

[Bug 1189611] Re: bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.30+bdcom-0ubuntu1 fails to see 5GHz networks and is unstable on 2.5GHz

2013-06-13 Thread Adam Porter
Michael,

"The standard wl driver does recognize the card (only b/g), but does not
connect at all."

My understanding is that bcmwl is the wl.ko driver, and you later say
that bcmwl 6.20.x works. What do you mean by, "the standard wl driver"?

Bernardo,

Now read my post. I said, "Assuming that the description is
incomplete..." which Michael confirmed in his last message.

I marked the bug Incomplete because it was waiting on Michael to reply
to my questions. He did, and reset it to New.

It seems that it is another regression. This whole bcmwl situation
keeps getting more confusing: some cards have regressions from
5.100->6.20 which may be fixed in 6.30, and other cards have regressions
from 6.20->6.30.

That's why I asked Michael to test the other drivers: if brcmsmac (the
in-tree, Free, non-binary driver) can be used with his card, he can dump
the restricted driver and its regressions.

Michael, can you please test brcmsmac with your card?

[Bug 1107155] Re: wl continuously spams syslog

2013-06-11 Thread Adam Porter
hggdh2,

Wow, instead of just posting the output of $(lspci | grep Broadcom),
you're refusing and arguing.

Again: If one of the other drivers works, then this bug report is moot.
If brcmsmac (the in-tree driver, which is "Completely open source host
drivers, no binary object files.") works, the solution to this bug is
not to fix bcmwl (the out-of-tree, non-free, restricted driver), the
solution is to use the driver that works.

Therefore you should test the other drivers. Here, I will help you test
the in-tree one:

$ sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source
$ sudo stop network-manager
$ sudo modprobe -r wl
$ sudo modprobe brcmsmac
$ sudo start network-manager
$ firefox

If the other drivers don't work, then fixing this driver might be the
best solution, or fixing the free driver might be the best solution.

If you disagree and refuse to cooperate, okay; good luck getting a
developer to work on this bug.

Ma Xiaojun,

If you don't understand the concept that there is no point in fixing
non-free driver X if free driver Y works, then I probably can't convince
you. Maybe someone else can. Good luck to you.

[Bug 1107155] Re: wl continuously spams syslog

2013-06-11 Thread Adam Porter
hggdh2,

> This did not need reporting the hardware at the time, and I am not
sure it needs it now. The issue is quite simple: wl spams the log.

Are you kidding me? You think reporting a driver bug doesn't require
reporting which of the 9+ different hardware it supports?

I will reiterate: I had this exact problem. I removed the wl driver
(the bcmwl-kernel-source package), causing the in-tree driver to be
used, and the problem was solved. Therefore it is a duplicate of bug
1097519, which states that the correct driver needs to be used.

If you disagree, you are going to have to prove that this bug exists by:

1. Reporting your hardware. Otherwise no one can take this report seriously.
2. Testing all the other drivers (b43, broadcom-sta, and brcmsmac) and proving
they all have the same problem. If one of the other drivers works, then this
bug report is moot.

Alternatively, you are going to have to explain why a driver developer
needs to fix bcmwl-kernel-source when other existing drivers work fine,
e.g. if one of the other three drivers doesn't work for you. But if
that were the case, the solution might be to fix the other driver, not
to fix this one. We need fewer redundant drivers, not more.

[Bug 732677] Re: bcmwl 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu2 not work on BCM4311/4312

2013-06-11 Thread Adam Porter
Chris, ok, I'm glad we're on the same page now.

My question now is whether this bug is obsolete. This bug was filed
about version 5.100.82.38 of the driver. That's no longer the current
version of the driver.

In Saucy we have:
bcmwl = 6.30.223.30+bdcom-0ubuntu1
broadcom-sta = 5.100.82.112-11

In Raring we have:
bcmwl =  6.20.155.1+bdcom-0ubuntu6
broadcom-sta = 5.100.82.112-9

And in Precise we have:
bcmwl =  6.20.155.1+bdcom-0ubuntu0.0.1
broadcom-sta = 5.100.82.112-4

And then there's the in-tree driver, which for at least some cards makes
those packages obsolete, at least on some kernel versions.

It seems to me that it still boils down to Ubuntu needing to install the
proper driver. For example, if broadcom-sta_ 5.100.82.112-9 said it
supported BCM4313, but BCM4313 worked with the in-tree driver, broadcom-
sta shouldn't even be installed, regardless of whether BCM4313 worked
with broadcom-sta. Or if a 5.100.82.38 of some package didn't work, but
the newer version did, that should be fixed by the newer version.

Now if there are some versions of some driver packages that don't
properly work with some cards, that could result in two problems:

1. Users upgrading distro versions with a package could end up with a
version of the package that doesn't work anymore (that happened to me).
That's still a matter of Ubuntu choosing the correct package.

2. Users trying to manually choose a package, searching package
descriptions, and choosing a package that happens to not work with their
card. That's unfortunate and frustrating. But the only way to solve
this is to comprehensively test all these different versions of all
these different packages with all the different cards they claim to
support, some of which might have subtle bugs with certain cards, and
some of which seem to have regressions in newer versions.

So if you want this bug to be #2...well, ok, I guess I can't argue with
that. But I'm not sure it's practical to really solve it. I think the
best we can realistically hope for is to get Ubuntu automatically
choosing the right package on first install and hopefully on distro
upgrade. And probably the only way we can do that is to act on specific
reports of specific cards failing with specific versions of specific
driver packages.

Maybe the best thing for now would be to make a note in all driver
packages that there are multiple driver packages that support the same
cards, and if one package doesn't work, the user should try the others
(including the in-tree one, which requires uninstalling the driver
packages). I think that there are just too many combinations to be
proactively comprehensive. With all the versions and packages and
claimed-supported cards, there ends up being something like 432
combinations.

I think all of this came about because Broadcom broke support for older
cards when they released the 6.20.x drivers. Maybe it was an accident,
or maybe they forgot to note that older cards were no longer supported
by newer releases. Whatever happened, it sure has made a mess!

Anyway, I feel like I may be more confused now than I was before. I'm
going to mark this bug as Incomplete in the Ubuntu project and let you
take this bug from here. :) My only suggestion is to try to give it a
more helpful title; what it has now may be either too specific or not
specific enough.

Sam, thanks for your encouraging words. I'm simply a user who ran

found. I expected a little random pushback, but I get too defensive

working toward the same goal here: stuff that just works. :)

[Bug 1107155] Re: wl continuously spams syslog

2013-06-11 Thread Adam Porter
Bernardo,

The problem for some users seems to be that the wrong driver is being
used. For myself and some others who commented here, using a different
driver made the the card work and didn't print the messages. Those
messages may be indicating a problem; if so, hiding them might not be
the right thing to do.

This is all complicated by the fact that some people on this report use
Raring and others use Precise. This is confusing because:

1. Raring uses 3.8, but Precise recently had 3.8 backported to it.
2. Precise had bcmwl 5.100.x but now has 6.20.x.
3. IIRC there were some problems building bcmwl on Precise that have since
been fixed.

And it's also complicated by the facts that:

1. The reporter of this bug didn't report his hardware.
2. Not everyone on this report is using the same hardware.
3. Not everyone on this report is using the same version of Ubuntu.

>From reading over 100 bug reports on bcmwl yesterday, my best
understanding is that this bug is either:

a) a dupe of bug 1097519, meaning that if the best driver is selected by
Ubuntu, the messages will not be printed and the card will work
properly; or

b) a bug in which a newer driver was imperfectly backported to a
backported kernel, leaving it in a state in which it performs correctly
but prints useless errors.

Since we don't know everyone's hardware here, and since some are talking
about Precise and some about Raring, and since the bug was originally
filed against Raring, I don't think this bug is about option B. If that
bug exists, I think it should be filed separately. But I'm not sure if
that bug really exists, because it appears to me that when the right
driver is used, the messages stop. From my understanding, the reporter
of this bug probably can solve his problem by using the proper driver.

So my best understanding is that this is still a dupe of bug 1097519.
If my reasoning is wrong, please explain.

[Bug 732677] Re: bcmwl 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu2 not work on BCM4311/4312

2013-06-11 Thread Adam Porter
Chris, I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I only marked it
invalid in that one context. If the b43 driver works, then Ubuntu should
select that driver. That would make this a dupe of bug 1097519, which
states that the wrong driver is used for some chipsets. In one of the
comments I made on that bug yesterday, I mentioned that some users have
found success using broadcom-sta*, and some by using b43, and others by
using brcmsmac.

As I understand it now there are possibly two issues:

1. Ubuntu selecting the wrong driver upon install, as you mentioned. That's
covered by bug 1097519.
2. A certain driver (e.g. broadcom-sta) not working with a chipset it claims
to support. That would be a separate issue.

So what I'm going to do now is:

1. In the Ubuntu project, mark this as a dupe of bug 1097519, because the
working driver needs to be selected by Ubuntu.
2. In the Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA driver project, mark this as incomplete.
If I understand you to mean that the broadcom-sta driver doesn't work with some
chipsets it claims to, then I guess you should mark this bug as New there.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. :)

I know it works on my system because I verified it myself. I have a

Really? So I've made a mess of the entire Ubuntu distro? By spending
several hours cleaning up over 100 stale and duplicate bug reports on
the bcmwl package? I cleaned up a major mess in one area but get
blamed for making a mess of everything, everywhere. I guess I should

[Bug 1189231] [NEW] quicksynergy obsoleted?

2013-06-09 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

http://code.google.com/p/quicksynergy/

"So QuickSynergy is a graphical user interface for Mac OS X (Leopard
only) and Linux systems, since the official website presents only a
Windows version."

This is no longer the case: synergy has a built-in GUI that works fine
on Ubuntu. I didn't realize this until after I had started using it
through quicksynergy.

Perhaps quicksynergy should be removed from Ubuntu now that synergy has
its own working GUI, which seems more capable. If nothing else, it
would reduce confusion and redundancy.

[Bug 1134477] Re: jockey fails to install new bcmwl in some cases

2013-06-09 Thread Adam Porter
Bug 1023145 may be relevant here. bcmwl-kernel-source may be the wrong
package altogether. In any case, many people are suffering from the
wrong driver being installed, and it's causing serious problems.

[Bug 651585] Re: Broadcom Corporation Device 4353 high pitch noise when CPU is idle

2013-06-09 Thread Adam Porter
1. 10.10 is no longer supported, nor 10.04.
2. This is surely a hardware bug. Some systems poorly isolate their
electrical components, so leakage into the sound system is common.

[Bug 1075407] Re: BCM4322 Wireless Stopped Working after 3.5.0-18.29-generic Kernel Update

2013-06-09 Thread Adam Porter
The most descriptive explanation I've seen so far is, "It's not
working." It's not possible to investigate this bug any further without
more information. You need to post basic info like system make/model,
chipset model, driver package versions, dmesg logs, syslog logs, etc.
And you need to explain the symptom more accurately than, "It doesn't
work."

Besides all that, this bug is probably either fixed in Raring, or some
people may be seeing bug 1097519.

Marking this as incomplete because nothing more can be done now.
