[Bug 1879206] Re: cups hplip not install printer

2021-03-21 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
The bug is present for 3 different HP printers ,
via Wifi or via USB

It worked nicely , and began to fail maybe one month ago (near february
/ march 2021)

I guess some upgrade messed-up the printers.

Thanks for answering :-)

I cannot test again, as i switched away from ubuntu due to other long
lasting bugs with trashing data unfixed (for example usb-creator, or
undocumented fstab options...)

Debian is rock solid guys, there is something wrong on Ubuntu.
Cheers.

[Bug 484252] Re: Format action wipes all partitions

2012-01-19 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
It is not an OSS problem, its is an UBUNTU problem.

Ubuntu wants to make easy money, but does not act in a responsible way
by NOT FIXING TRASHING DATA BUG.

It not hte only bug like this that is not fixed, and which concerns
Canonical employee developed tools.

If you need rock solid distro, switch to something else, ubuntu is for
kids, not for professional.

wrt #10 :
Maverick end of life will occur *before* lucid, so we dont care about this
being fixed in maverick, but we need it in lucid :-)

Also i dont understand how the usb-creator cannot simply transmit the
argument of the selected device (be it a partition or a device)

[Bug 609741] [NEW] konsole inverts $COLUMNS and $LINES when resized from vi

2010-07-25 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

This simple command does a resize from vi (enlarge by 3 columns)

$ resize; vi /tmp/a +set co=$(($COLUMNS + 3)) +:q; echo; resize

We see that Konsole is totaly messed-up, due to the fact that it inverts the
number of lines and the number of columns.

To have a normal display agin, it is enougth to resize the windo with
the mouse, then correct values are taken into account (and set as env
vars).

Doing the same command line in gnome-terminal 2.28 (karmic) just works
fine, the terminal is correctly resized when vi ask for it.

Just no affect in xterm, or xfce4-terminal.

[Bug 477698] Re: oowriter fail to export to XHTML a document containing ?xml version='1.0' encoding=UTF-8?

2010-06-24 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
why do you close this bug ?

1/ It is not expired (karmic is still alive)

2/ You could test it with lucid as i provided a sample file to test (and
it would have been faster than writing all the blurb above), or at least
with karmic and confirm/infirm the bug

3/ I dont care about lucid currently, i'll upgrade once it has
stabilised and upgrade path from karmic is debugged.

[Bug 505854] Re: plot does not work with octave 3.2

2010-01-12 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
The rebuild is still not perfect:
I rebuilded from source as indicated above, and put higer version number
I have removed gnuplot, and all unneeded plplot stuff, to keep only what i need

$ dpkg -l | grep plplot|awk '{print $1 \t  $2 \t  $3}'
ii libplplot9 5.9.2-32-AL1
ii octave-plplot 5.9.2-32-AL1
ii plplot-bin 5.9.2-32-AL1

ii plplot9-driver-cairo5.9.2-32-AL1
ii plplot9-driver-gd 5.9.2-32-AL1

if i produce an error (not togle_plplot_use before trying to plot) then next
invocation will fail:
1/ This is ok :

[Bug 505854] [NEW] plot does not work with octave 3.2

Public bug reported:

octave3.2:3 plot(x,y)

2010-01-09 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
very unhappy
Additional information: after rebuilding from

dget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/p/plplot/plplot_5.9.2-3.dsc
apt-get build-dep plplot
cd plplot-5.9.2
debuild -us -uc
sudo debi

the installed packages are out-dated, so upgrade manager want to replace them.
I had to change revision numer of the package to keep it working.

Also, it installs ada, java (i don't want gcj), fortran... and everything when
i only wanted octave_plplot.
Something is completely wrong with ubuntu packages, whereas debian one is clean
!

octave:1 toggle_plplot_use

octave:2 plplot_octave_path
ans = /usr/share/plplot_octave//  --- notice the //

octave:3 plplot_octave
panic: Segmentation fault -- stopping myself...

OK it finds plplot_octave (and segfault is normal it should no be called
like this)

***
2/ in my karmic install :

octave:1 toggle_plplot_use
Use PLplot: on

octave:2 plplot_octave_path
ans = /usr/share/plplot_octave

octave:3 plplot_octave
error: `plplot_octave' undefined near line 3 column 1

It does not find plplot_octave.oct BUT when i quit plplot :
octave:3 toggle_plplot_use
Use PLplot: off

octave:4 plplot_octave
panic: Segmentation fault -- stopping myself...

it finds it again !

It seems that toggle_plplot_use is broken and remove some essential part
from the path

[Bug 479965] Re: bootwait in fstab causes mount problems

2009-12-15 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
We don't ask to wait for all the possible partitions

We ask for :
- no errors due to _UNDOCUMENTED_ bootwait option in /etc/fstab
- waiting for _LOCAL_ filesystem until fsck is finished at least a message in a
popup or CTRL-C to interrupt fsck ala debian old-fashion. It is the user
responsability to vreak havoc in his system at boot time, not ubuntu's.

no more, no less :-)

Also worth to notice :
you advise me to add an undocumented option in my fstab, when you know there is
trouble with it !

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util-linux/+bug/479965

The correct actions to take are:
- fix mountall so the default behavior is sysvinit compatible (ie default is
bootwait)
- don't mess-up the fstab
 -- either work with upstream
-- or put mountall option in a separate file (hint : /etc/mountall.conf)

[Bug 205149] Re: update manager and aptitude not in sync

2009-11-27 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
OK i think got it , something is wrong in the way update-manager manages
dependencies:

On my server php5 is installed and need to be upgraded

pre
 # LANG=en aptitude show php5
 Package: php5
New: yes --- why new ? Is it the cause of the
trouble ?
 State: installed
 Automatically installed: no
 Version: 5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6.1
 Priority: optional
 Section: web
 Maintainer: Ubuntu Core Developers ubuntu-devel-disc...@lists.ubuntu.com
 Uncompressed Size: 20.5k
 Depends: libapache2-mod-php5 (= 5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6.1) |
libapache2-mod-php5filter (= 5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6.1) | php5-cgi (=
5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6.1), php5-common (=
 5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu6.1)
/pre

it considers that libapache2-mod-php5 must be installed, but the dependency says
 libapache2-mod-php5 | libapache2-mod-php5filter | php5-cgi

the last choice php5-cgi is installed in my machine so the apache stuff
is not needed.

[Bug 486273] [NEW] reconfigure locales is NOT documented, man pages are wrong...

2009-11-21 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
Public bug reported:

on KArmic 9.10 I need C, POSIX, fr_FR and en_FR with utf8 and
ISO-8859-15

dpkg-reconfigure locales does nothing
dpkg-reconfigure localepurge does weird things, but let en_ZW.utf8

man pages are useless or outdated, probably due to undocumented ubuntu
changes

Nothing in release notes, ubuntu search just googles and report obsolete
stuff

Please, either document in manpages or anywhere *inside* packages, howto
do this, or fix the packages to behave as documented in the man.

[Bug 486273] Re: reconfigure locales is NOT documented, man pages are wrong...

2009-11-21 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 122153 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/122153

This is not duplicate of the other bug.

I am speaking about DOCUMENTING the changes made on tools, whereas the
other is about behavior of tools.

The only way i found to have the desired locale is to edit files in
 /var/lib/locales/supported.d

This is NOT DOCUMENTED

btw localpurge does not purge /usr/lib/locale correctly, for example it
keeps en_ZW even if i did not checked it. (maybe i should fill another
bug against localepûrge ?)

2009-11-15 Thread Alain Baeckeroot
WORKAROUND, as i don't expect ubuntu to fix it (maybe i should go back
to Debian as suggested by Philip M in #30)

i added 2 lines in my /home/alain/.bash_aliases
alias gvim=gvim -reverse 2/dev/null
alias tvim=gvim --servername localhost --remote-silent-tab 2/dev/null

regards.
