[Bug 1084236] Re: Pinta eats-up all metadata after saving JPEG file

2015-05-16 Thread Alan Pater
Well, with exiv2 one can export all metadata to external files and then
re-import the data after modifying the image in Pinta.

Automating that would be best, let's make the computers do all the work
for us!

2015-05-09 Thread Alan Pater
The way to do this is discussed on the exiv2 forum:
http://dev.exiv2.org/boards/3/topics/901
You combine the separate options

For example: ~/image.tests$ exiv2 -qpa blank.jpg

Results in no output, but:

~/image.tests$ exiv2 -q pa blank.jpg
pa: Failed to open the file
blank.jpgFile name : blank.jpg
blank.jpgFile size : 4691 Bytes
blank.jpgMIME type : image/jpeg
blank.jpgImage size : 229 x 83

I'm afraid that the stickers are mostly worn off. The Portege R700 sticker is
intact, but I don't see a legible model or serial number.
There is a P/N that starts with PT311... Is that the model number?

I highly suspect that it was originally sold in the USA, though I bought
it second hand elsewhere.

[Bug 1385453] [NEW] Toshiba R700 backlight control not always working

2014-10-24 Thread Alan Pater
Public bug reported:

When returning from sleep mode, I lose backlight control via Fn-F7.

Restarting the system restores control.

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit.
~$ uname -psrv
Linux 3.13.0-37-generic #64-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 22 21:28:38 UTC 2014 x86_64

I could also adjust the brightness from the terminal:

~$ cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
1030

~$ grep . /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/*
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness:1030
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/bl_power:0
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness:1030
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness:4539

So, to temporarily increase the screen brightness:

~$ echo 3030 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
3030

But that does not give back control via Fn-F7, it just gives an
independent way of adjusting the backlight.

[Bug 1214148] Re: [Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03] Intel video: Display backlight cannot be changed

2014-06-23 Thread Alan Pater
Symptom sometimes occurs on a R700 Toshiba when returning from sleep
mode. Restarting the system restores this functionality.

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit.
~$ uname -psrv
Linux 3.13.0-29-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 4 21:00:20 UTC 2014 x86_64

I could also adjust the brightness from the terminal:

~$ cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
1030

~$ grep . /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/*
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness:1030
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/bl_power:0
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness:1030
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness:4539

So, to temporarily increase the screen brightness:

~$ echo 3030 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
3030

[Bug 1051559] Re: Build Firefox with GStreamer 1.0 support

2014-04-08 Thread Alan Pater
Using firefox-trunk from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-
daily/+archive/ppa/ and it now appears to be built with gstreamer1.0
support.

https://www.youtube.com/html5 shows it as supporting H.264

My understanding is that with this, everything is in place for when FF
30+ is stable.

Mozilla did not add gstreamer1.0 support to FF 28, just to FF 30.

[Bug 1266289] [NEW] XMP IPTC Creator metadata written to wrong property

2014-01-05 Thread Alan Pater
Public bug reported:

1) In digikam, select an image and go to Image > Metadata > Edit all
metdata > Edit XMP > Credits:Contact.

2) Fill in the fields, such as City. Apply, close the metadata editor, go to
Image > Write metadata to image.
Digikam uses exiv2 to write the metadata properties.

3) Check which XMP properties where written using the exiv2 command line
tool.

$ exiv2 -px image.jpg | grep City
Xmp.iptc.CiAdrCity XmpText13 Vancouver

4) Write equivalent property using exiftool: exiftool
-ContactCity=Vancouver image.jpg

5) Confirm which property was written using exiv2 command line.

$ exiv2 -px image.jpg | grep City
Xmp.iptc.CiAdrCity
XmpText13 Vancouver
Xmp.iptc.CreatorContactInfo/Iptc4xmpCore:CiAdrCity XmpText 9
Vancouver

Digikam has written the wrong property. According to the XMP schema,
Creator Contact properties are nested under Creator Contact Info, not at
the root level themselves. Exiftool has written the correct form of this
property. Digikam/exiv2 have not.

I ran FWTS on my system and it gave the following:

ADVICE: The ACPI video driver has found a duplicate ACPI video bus device for
the same VGA controller. If the current driver does not work, one can try to
work around this using the video.allow_duplicates=1 kernel parameter.

[Bug 1258686] Re: Faulty laptop battery or AC throws system cache for a loop

2013-12-09 Thread Alan Pater
Yes it occurred in the previous version and yes, I have tried about a
dozen other kernels.

I would rather do some triage to actully identify the issue instead of
getting in an endless loop of trying different kernels in the hope that
some unrelated patch will have an affect.

[Bug 1189645] Re: 8086:27a2 13.04, lag under desktop environments

2013-12-08 Thread Alan Pater
apport information

** Description changed:

A while after logging on, the system gets really slow. Menus and window
movements take a while to respond, switching windows is slow, etc.

This is a regression, it was not like this using Ubuntu 12.10, it just
started on 13.04. Tried different desktops (Unity, GnomeFaillback,
Lxde). They all have the same issue.

Testing showed the issue is worsened by the TLP power management package.
TLP was installed in an attempt to resolve issue of fan running constantly.

[Bug 1246793] Re: Battery charging slows down laptop

2013-12-06 Thread Alan Pater
Looks like you have run into the infamous CPU frequency issue.

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_CPU_frequency_scaling

Solution is to make sure you are running with high quality AC power.

Workaround is to edit /etc/default/grub

Find the following line and add processor.ignore_ppc=1
so it looks like this:

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash processor.ignore_ppc=1"

then
  sudo update-grub && sudo reboot.

Have a nice day.

[Bug 1258686] [NEW] Faulty laptop battery or AC throws system cache for a loop

2013-12-06 Thread Alan Pater
Public bug reported:

After a random period of time after a fresh boot, the system cache gets
corrupted. This is shown by hdparm -T.

Before system cache corruption:
 Timing cached reads: 1804 MB in 2.00 seconds = 902.88 MB/sec

After system cache corruption:
 Timing cached reads: 258 MB in 2.00 seconds = 129.10 MB/sec

Either the system battery or the AC adaptor is not functioning
correctly, the Dell bios at times indicates that the AC adaptor is not a
valid Dell product, though it is. In any case, the battery does not
charge, but remains at 0%.

[Bug 1084236] Re: Pinta eats-up EXIF data after saving JPEG file

2013-12-01 Thread Alan Pater
I use pinta on Ubuntu Linux and the same problem exists. I notice that
it not just EXIF data, but all metadata stored in the photo.

I tested with a Sample image containing a large amount of metadata:
EXIF, IPTC and XMP. In my case I simply used Pinta to rotate the photo
90 degrees and then re-saved it. All the metadata was lost in the
process.

To confirm that the metadata was not in the resulting image I tested
with several tools: EoG and exiftool,

[Bug 1256286] Re: Search for photo using XMP metadata shows no results

2013-11-29 Thread Alan Pater
Cool, I look forward to seeing full support of XMP-dwc in 14.04.

In the meantime, I'll do some testing with Flickr & Picasa, to see if
XMP-dwc data is preserved and searchable. And look into auto-tagging
Shotwell.

[Bug 1189645] Re: 13.04, lag under desktop environments

2013-08-29 Thread Alan Pater
The latest updates seem to have triggered the issue, as well as
displaying other artifacts. I now get some graphics corruption
(attached) and, while watching a (html5) video on youtube
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wp2qhoop9U), the whole system froze and
the video audio went into some sort of skip mode.

I've been running in Pavlovian mode, without flash installed and somehow
managing to avoid the conditions to trigger the issue, until today, when
an update seems have found out how to trigger it all on it's own.

Does this still happen with the non-beta version of Ubuntu?

If so, can you connect manually, via the wifi icon on the top bar?

[Bug 1207778] [NEW] System slow after suspend and resume

2013-08-02 Thread Alan Pater
Public bug reported:

GUI gets very slow after suspend/resume cycle.

Menus lag significantly, windows are slow to move around, even web pages load
slowly.
This happens under different GUIs. Both Unity and Lubuntu show the same issue.

Top does not show any misbehaving applications, nothing is using a lot of CPU.
Free indicates that there is plenty of free ram, the system is not swapping to
disk.

To try and quantify the problem, I ran gtkperf & hdparm before and
after.

Before hdparm -T returns 900 MB/sec, after: 143.51 MB/sec
 (hdparm -t does not change)

gtkperf -a gives a total time of 10 seconds before, and 80 seconds
after.

To clear up the problem and return the system to normal performance, I need to
shutdown, count to 20, and restart. A simple reboot does not clear the problem.

[Bug 1120245] Re: A program is still running: Unknown Not responding.

2013-08-01 Thread Alan Pater
Try to identify which application is still running through the process
of elimination.

Have you installed any extra applications, or are you using the ones
which came installed?

Does it happen all the time, or only after running a certain
application?

Do you close all applications before shutting down, or leave them
running and let the system shut them down?

[Bug 1177439] Re: Firefox freezes temporarily

2013-07-26 Thread Alan Pater
I had similar issues. In my case it was due to my battery being dead and
being connected to a low quality AC power source.

Your CPU is stuck at 1.20 GHz, but should go up to 2.10 GHz :

current policy: frequency should be within 1.20 GHz and 1.20 GHz.

There is more info here:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_CPU_frequency_scaling

In my case I connected directly to a higher quality AC source (without
an extension cable), added "processor.ignore_ppc=1" to the kernel boot
command line, and am running without the (dead) battery installed.

Try that out and see if it helps.
