[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location
Before 22.04 I was able to just uninstall snapd to remove ~/snap, and that was fine. But now that Firefox is being delivered as only a Snap in 22.04, I'm essentially being strong-armed into using snaps, because Firefox is probably the most critical piece of software on my system and I cannot work without it. Given this new situation, the ~/snap folder has gone from an annoyance that can be fixed by uninstalling snapd, to an intolerable situation that I will literally switch distros over. It makes me irrationally angry to have a piece of low-level systems software that I rarely want to interact with park its junk right in the middle of $HOME, the place where I organize my personal documents. Why not make ~/dconf or ~/pam while we're at it? Please don't make me leave Ubuntu in 22.04 - just move the damn folder to ~/.snap or even better ~/.local/snap already. A forums thread was mentioned earlier in this bug report where the snap maintainers change ~/snap to ~/.snap ... BUT THEN THEY GO ON TO CREATE ~/Snap! [Bug 1886230] Re: Thinkpad P1 Gen2 HDMI doesn't work after log out or reboot
Re. the bug report in the email thread, they state that "if HDMI cable isn't plugged before boot, the HDMI port becomes useless and never responds to cable hotplugging" However my situation seems to be the reverse: If the HDMI cable is plugged in before cold boot, then the port appears to work through boot, GDM, and desktop. But on log out to GDM or soft reboot, it breaks. [Bug 1886230] [NEW] Thinkpad P1 Gen2 HDMI doesn't work after log out or reboot
Public bug reported: I have a Thinkpad P1 Gen 2. This specific machine was customized to NOT have a discrete Nvidia GPU. It ONLY has an integrated Intel UHD 630 GPU. This is not a hardware issue as Windows seems to handle things correctly. With an external monitor connected via HDMI, boot proceeds OK with the external monitor displaying the boot process. I log in to a Gnome session using X. After login, I am able to open the display settings GUI and set mode to "single display" with the built-in LCD disabled and the external monitor enabled. This works correctly. However, if I then reboot the machine with the external monitor connected: 1. Boot proceeds correctly with the boot process shown on the external monitor. 2. After login, the external monitor is powered off and the built-in LCD is enabled. The "display settings" GUI shows the external monitor as a connected "Unknown Display" with the wrong resolution of 1024x768. Attempting to use the GUI to set "single display" as above results in the external monitor still being powered off, and the built-in LCD also powered off. I have to press esc to cancel the display changes. At this point, the relevant output of `xrandr` is: DP1 connected 1024x768+3840+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 600mm x 340mm 1024x768 60.00* 800x600 60.3256.25 848x480 60.00 640x480 59.94 DP1 is the HDMI output, and it is listed at the wrong resolutions. If I disconnect the HDMI cable then run `xrandr` again, the output of `xrandr` is unchanged: it still lists DP1 as connected (!) even though the cable is disconnected. This bug also occurs if instead of rebooting, I simply log out and log back in again. The only solution appears to be to unplug the HDMI cable, shut down the machine (not reboot or log out), power on, log in, and at the desktop plug in the HDMI cable. At that point it works again. Rebooting does not solve the issue. It seems that a complete shutdown is required. I tested on Ubuntu 20.04's stock kernel 5.4.0 and also kernel 5.7.7 and the issue is present on both versions. [Bug 1315360] Re: [Razer Blade] Trackpad detected as mouse only
I spoke with Andrew Duggan and he figured out that as of kernel 4.0 the touchpad is incorrectly detected as a clickpad. That's why the touchpad works, but in a flaky way. The good news is that this seems solvable. All you have to do is: synclient ClickPad=0 Palm detection is also off by default and I find it basically unusuable without it, so also do: synclient PalmDetect=1 These changes aren't saved after a reboot, but to make them permanent, create a configuration file in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/. You can do it with this one-liner: echo -e Section \InputClass\\n\tIdentifier \touchpad catchall\\n\tDriver \synaptics\\n\tMatchIsTouchpad \on\\n\tMatchDevicePath \/dev/input/event*\\n\n\tOption \PalmDetect\ \1\\n\tOption \ClickPad\ \0\\nEndSection | sudo tee /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/60-synaptics-options.conf /dev/null So to summarize, we can get 100% touchpad functionality by installing Linux kernel = 4.0, then running both synclient ClickPad=0 synclient PalmDetect=1 Not sure who to go to to correct this default misconfiguration, but at least we can get everything working! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1315360 Title: [Razer Blade] Trackpad detected as mouse only To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1315360/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 880316] Re: Ubuntu installer can't setup network on Shuttle XS35GTV2
I think I may have found a possible workaround. The stock drivers on 14.04 don't work out of the box for *gigabit ethernet*. If you're connecting to a gigabit router, then open a terminal and run: $ sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full If you don't have ethtool installed, install with: $ sudo apt-get install ethtool Once you run that command, your link should be detected immediately. The catch is that you'll be running at 100Mbps, not gigabit. I think what happened was that there was some kind of kernel networking API change between 12.04 and 14.04. Whatever changed broke this driver's ability to deal with gigabit connections. It's a bummer that this doesn't work out-of-the-box and that it's been ignored for so long, but at least we have a crappy workaround. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/880316 Title: Ubuntu installer can't setup network on Shuttle XS35GTV2 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/880316/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1310798] [NEW] JMicron JMC250 ethernet: networking always disconnected
Public bug reported: Summary: Ubuntu version: 14.04 desktop x64 Problem hardware: JMicron JMC250 ethernet controller (jme drivers) Expected behavior: Ethernet networking works when cable connected. Actual behavior: Networking always shows disconnected, even when cable connected. Details: In Ubuntu 14.04 with a JMicron JMC250 ethernet controller, the ethernet link is always shown as disconnected, even when the cable is connected and networking is otherwise working. In Ubuntu 12.04, this same ethernet controller also exhibited the same problem. However it was fixable by downloading and manually compiling a new version of the jme drivers from here: ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/Ethernet/Linux/jmebp-1.0.8.5.tar.bz In 14.04, the above 1.0.8.5 driver no longer compiles and is thus not installable. I tried downloading and compiling the latest source for the driver from https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/drivers/net/ethernet/jme.c. This driver does compile, but after installation still doesn't work, with the wired network status always showing disconnected. [Bug 880316] Re: Ubuntu installer can't setup network on Shuttle XS35GTV2
So after some more digging it turns out that the 3.14 kernel line has sources for the jme drivers, updated just 20 days ago, that can be compiled on 14.04: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/drivers/net/ethernet/jme.c These sources apply the fixes in #24 (weirdly committed over a year ago) and my own stab-in-the-dark in #34 along with many other differences. So I downloaded the new jme.c and jme.h from there and was able to successfully compile and install the driver on Ubuntu 14.04. But it still doesn't work, eth0 still shows as disconnected. [Bug 880316] Re: Ubuntu installer can't setup network on Shuttle XS35GTV2
In 12.04 this problem was fixable by downloading and compiling the JME drivers (jmebp-1.0.8.5.tar.bz) from the JMicron web site. Re. #24, I was able to get the driver to compile, but not actually work, by adding your changes and additionally changing __vlan_hwaccel_put_tag(skb, vid) to __vlan_hwaccel_put_tag(skb, htons(ETH_P_8021Q), vid); I saw that they used the same value in fixing the Realtek driver here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/r8168/+bug/1216906 The constant they use is defined in this block: http://lxr.free- electrons.com/source/drivers/staging/rtl8188eu/include/if_ether.h#L35 Admittedly I have no idea what that addition means or does, I'm just stabbing in the dark. [Bug 965953] Re: Indicator menus are too short and scroll when opened from screen bottom
It shouldn't be hard to reproduce, I noticed it immediately after upgrading. Just use the gnome classic session, add a bottom panel, and set the indicator applet on the bottom panel in Precise. The WiFi indicator is the easiest to reproduce the issue as it updates frequently. Sound indicator is another example, when it changes tracks. Try scrubbing left and right across the indicators. The patch above is a sort of fix, but it adds a new bug where frequently instead of being too small, the indicator menus become massive and reach nearly to the top of the screen. [Bug 1011027] [NEW] Desktop crashes to login screen when opening links in Thunderbird
Public bug reported: I installed 12.04 a few weeks ago without problems. About two days ago (2012-06-08), I started experiencing crashes almost every time I would click a URL in an email in Thunderbird (thus invoking Firefox). The desktop instantly kicks me back to the login screen without warning, all programs are closed, and I lose all of my work. This has been happening once or twice *every hour* and always when I click a URL in Thunderbird. Sometimese instead of crashing to login, the screen freezes and I have to power cycle it. (ctrl+alt+f* don't work.) I've read that these kinds of crashes are often related to Xorg, but nothing in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log suggests a seg fault or other error. I don't know where else to look. I'm on a Dell laptop running fglrx with a stock 12.04 install. Needless to say it's extremely frustrating, happens very often (many times per day), and only started happening recently (my workflow has not changed). ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1011027 Title: Desktop crashes to login screen when opening links in Thunderbird To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1011027/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 965953] Re: indicator applet with scroll arrows
Thanks Jiahua, I was able to test it out with your instructions. It looks like your patch fixes the problem, thanks! However there's a slight issue: with the patch applied, when you open an indicator, the menu flickers near the top of the screen for a split second before aligning back down to the bottom where it should be. (Or perhaps the menu opens up to double-size and the instantly shrinks back to normal size, it goes so fast it's hard to tell.) This doesn't seem to affect usability, but it's very noticeable and detracts a bit from the smoothness of the UI. This bug has been a problem since Natty. It still shows up in Precise. If you enable window previews in Gnome Classic and hover your mouse over a window title, the preview will appear. But it will only disappear if you move your mouse horizontally on the taskbar. If you move your mouse vertically over the preview window and into the desktop area, the preview won't disappear. [Bug 965953] Re: indicator applet with scroll arrows
This seems to have gotten worse on 12.04 using Gnome Classic. I have my indicators on the bottom-right. Before, if the indicator menu had to change size (for example a new wireless network was detected while the indicator was open), it wouldn't resize right, but it would show scroll arrows at the top/bottom. Clicking the arrows would force the indicator menu to resize itself correctly. However in 12.04 those arrows don't work any more. My Dropbox indicator menu is now completely invisible because it didn't resize right and the arrows don't work; I can't click on Banshee in the sound menu because it resized with the volume on top but the Banshee controls below the panel. [Bug 770283] Re: [fglrx]title bar does not update on non-maximized windows
This bug affects me too, and I may have found a workaround. The report gave a hint that if they chmod'd /usr/bin/unity-window-decorator, things seem to work again, but without Compiz. That made me investigate CCSM a little bit. If you open CCSM and go to the Window Decoration plugin under Effects, you can change the path of the window decorator that Compiz uses. In my case, I changed the Command to /usr/bin/gtk-window- decorator instead of /usr/bin/compiz-decorator (presumably an alias for unity-window-decorator), and on first blush the problem seems to be gone. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/770283 Title: [fglrx]title bar does not update on non-maximized windows To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/770283/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Seems that I may have spoken a little too soon. My workaround does seems to fix Firefox and Thunderbird windows; I can now change tabs and the titlebar will update on both max'd and non-max'd windows. However other apps still have this problem. For example a Nautilus titlebar will update if it's max'd, but will NOT update if not. Maybe this suggests that the problem goes deeper than the window decorator. [Bug 724369] Re: Port to gnome-panel 3 and gtk 3
I'm unable to add indicators to the panel from the package in the PPA. There isn't an indicator applet shown in the 'add panel' dialog. This would be great to have because while there is a notification area in gnome-fallback, it doesn't seem to be themed quite right. The icons are very close together and all different sizes, so they're hard to manipulate. [Bug 663575] Re: Hibernate on Dell laptop occasionally hangs
This seems to have been fixed at some point with a Maverick kernel update, however now on Natty the problem has returned. I'm using a different Dell laptop now though. Maybe 1/3 of the time the system will freeze at a black console screen when hibernating and won't power down. I have to power cycle to get it to turn off. [Bug 483912] Re: When sorting by track number, sometimes track 1 is incorrectly sorted at the bottom
That might be true, but the disc number field is not visible by default. If it were visible by default and I could see that my single album was incorrectly tagged with two different disc numbers, that would be one thing, because it would be obvious why it was sorted that way. But since it's not visible, I was completely confused and assumed it was a bug, because assuming Banshee also sorts by disc number when I ask it to only sort by track number doesn't make sense to me. I guess what I'm saying is that if you're going to sort by something, you can't make it a hidden field, because that will lead to confusion for mis-tagged albums like mine. (I'm usually very particular about how I tag my music, but most people aren't as thorough as me). If you want to also sort by disc number when the user asks to only sort by track number, then at least show the other field you're sorting by. So it's not so much a bug as a usability problem I think. -- When sorting by track number, sometimes track 1 is incorrectly sorted at the bottom https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/483912 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 483912] Re: When sorting by track number, sometimes track 1 is incorrectly sorted at the bottom
This does seem to resolve the problem, thanks. However I think this behavior is quite confusing. I don't see the disc number in the 'sort- by' columns, so when I click to sort by track, I expect the songs to be sorted by track, not by a hidden field first, then track. For example if I clicked to sort by track title, it doesn't sort by disc number first, then track title; it just sorts by track title. Is this something that would make sense to change or am I the only one thinking this way? -- When sorting by track number, sometimes track 1 is incorrectly sorted at the bottom https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/483912 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 663575] [NEW] Hibernate on Dell laptop occasionally hangs
Public bug reported: I have a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop, stock parts. I have it set to hibernate on closing the lid. Hardy thru Lucid had no problems with hibernate. However, on a clean Maverick install, occasionally the hibernate process hangs. I close the lid and the system remains in a powered on state. When I open the lid to check what's happened, I see a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. The system must then be powered off by holding the power button and then boots fresh, without hibernate data. This doesn't happen every time; maybe every 3rd time. I'm not sure what causes it, other than it happens frequently enough to be a problem for me. In Banshee, the cover art for this album isn't loaded (it shows the default CD image) even though the cover art is present in the ID3 tag of the file. I did some investigating, and the cover art cache file for this album isn't being created in ~/.cache/album-art/.
