[Bug 1964025] Re: Do not support OpenSSL 3

2022-05-21 Thread Alexander Adam
Should these updates appear automatically at one point or do I have to
activate some repos or so?

I'm still having the same issues like others as well:

[Bug 427168] Re: usb keyboard settings (repeat rate and delay) reset on plugin

2020-11-20 Thread Alexander Adam
> I can confirm that toggling repeat keys off and on again fixes the
issue temporarily for the current session.

Also changing the repeat speed.

It would be nice if this toggling would be possible from CLI.
This way I wouldn't have to go in the settings every time my computer woke up
from sleep.

[Bug 427168] Re: usb keyboard settings (repeat rate and delay) reset on plugin

2020-11-11 Thread Alexander Adam
Bug is still happening on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS.
I'm using an external Apple Alu Keyboard.
The interesting thing is, that repeat rate and delay are correct for the
internal keyboard of the notebook but they are wrong for the plugged in
keyboard.

If I go into settings and set it again it is correct for this session.
But it will be reset on the next time.

[Bug 1873713] Re: appstreamcli: symbol lookup error: appstreamcli: undefined symbol: AS_APPSTREAM_METADATA_PATHS

2020-04-30 Thread Alexander Adam
System state seems to be pretty broken. Opening Dolphin leads to errors
like these:

kf5.ki18n: Trying to convert empty KLocalizedString to QString.
org.kde.solid.udisks2: Failed enumerating UDisks2 objects:
"org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply"
"Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did
not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."

I thought LTS to LTS upgrades should be fine‽

Any advice is appreciated!

[Bug 1211930] Re: Copying files creates useless data

2020-04-19 Thread Alexander Adam
I tried version 2.10+repack-2, which is the "newest" package I found that was
installable with dependencies on 18.04.4 (newer deb packages seem to rely on
newer dependencies that aren't available in 18.04).
The version still has this bug, though.

It seems to be the same or similar to this upstream bug:

This bug happens when I try to copy/move many files and destroyed a lot

[Bug 1799853] Re: German translation of "Create New Note" template breaks functionality

Something is strange in general with the localization stuff in Tomboy.
See the recording in the attachment:

Everything in the UI is in English (Menus, Columns, etc.) but when I
create a new note, it's title is in German and runs into that particular
bug.

What is interesting here as well: it is working when I load Gnome as a

[Bug 1736164] Re: deja-dup/duplicity backup fails with UnicodeDecodeError

2018-12-19 Thread Alexander Adam
Okay so this explains everything:

in my case the fault was not about special characters in files or filenames but
of error messages.
I executed Deja Dup / Duplicity in a localized environment and got an error. If
the *error message* contains special characters the response in the view won't
show the real message at all. Instead the error message will cause the encoding
exception.

In my case it was:

[…]
DUPLICITY: . File
"/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/duplicity/backends/giobackend.py", line 124,
in __copy_file
DUPLICITY: . None, self.__copy_progress, None)
DUPLICITY: . Error: g-io-error-quark: Fehler beim Senden von Daten:
Datenübergabe unterbrochen (broken pipe) (44)
DUPLICITY: .
[…]

So it seems that the error could be everything. As long as it contains
special characters it will lead to the encoding issue.

In my case switching the locale showed the real cause in the GUI. I hope
this information helps someone else too.

[Bug 1736164] Re: deja-dup/duplicity backup fails with UnicodeDecodeError

2018-12-18 Thread Alexander Adam
This bug is rather https://bugs.launchpad.net/duplicity/+bug/1386373 —
right?

As it seems that there's a fix in Fedora somewhere[1]: is there any
chance to get this upstream fix on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS as well?

I mean, I would love to have a working backup solution again. ;)

Also the error message seems to be caused by totally different
problems!?

1. a read encoding issue: https://bugs.launchpad.net/duplicity/+bug/1386373
(because the suggested fix seem to work for Eugene)
2. readonly mount
https://bugs.launchpad.net/deja-dup/+bug/1769891#yui_3_10_3_1_1545160806792_1239
 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/deja-dup/+bug/1741769

So I guess the error message in general is or was very misleading!?

[1] Should the patch be visible on
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1470873 ? I can't see it!?

I upgraded from 17.04. So if it really should be fixed in 17.10 I'm very open
to hints for particular config purges/reinstallations or actually anything that
could help.

It looks like I just ran into this issue with Ubuntu 16.10 so the

Is any more data needed or would it be useless anyway?

As Jani Nikula wrote

[Bug 1514120] Re: Encrypted Ubuntu on dual boot

2016-12-03 Thread Alexander Adam
With Ubuntu 16.10. this issue got more important for me.
I upgraded from 16.04. to 16.10. and my encrypted setup broke as systemd was
only seldom able to boot.
19 of 20 times it wasn't possible to boot as there was some issue in systemd
where it wasn't able to mount partitions.
As I wasn't able to to fix it (although I tried a lot), I just decided to
reinstall.

Which means I must decide over the encryption setup again, which could
be incompatible with the next Ubuntu upgrade and therefore break my
setup again.

This really isn't cool.

PS: Besides from that encryption should be standard in the year 2016

[Bug 1463023] Re: systemd Timed out waiting for device swap and file system check

2016-11-24 Thread Alexander Adam
Okay, sorry I was wrong again. The other issue just handles the
cryptswap-stuff which seems to be an issue for years in Ubuntu (and gets
closed most of the times).

However, I was finally able to boot my system and wanted to share for
others who might be run into this issue with systemd timeouts:

I added "selinux=1 enforcing=0" to kernel boot parameters.
I have no idea why this helps but I found it here:

2016-11-24 Thread Alexander Adam
I'm having the same issue now. I upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 to 16.10.
I was able to boot twice into a running system, but I had no luck the other
times besides from these two times.

However, this gives you the chance to, hopefully, solve this issue.
And as I'm landing in the recovery console with decrypted and mounted root
partition I guess it may be solvable.

I can't really remember how the cryptsetup stuff worked so it may really
be related to some changed / referenced uuids?

I found posts from other people with the same issue but none of them
seem to got it solved.

[Bug 1310788] Re: Thunar exists with segfault when accessing the context menu a second time

2014-10-03 Thread Alexander Adam
Somehow that made the complete Desktop unresponsive!?

I installed the dbg-packages, executed 'gdb thunar' and then 'run'.
Thunar started and I made a right click twice.

After that nearly the whole Desktop became useless (i had to kill the gdb
command via console and everything went fine again).
This behaviour is reproducible. Somehow some visual things still worked (the
menu was shown in the top bar of unity when i pressed alt) and icons on the
(nautilus-) desktop where highlighted when i hovered them with the mouse cursor.

Did I miss something?

[Bug 1310745] Re: keep custom resolutions

2014-10-03 Thread Alexander Adam
I have to correct myself.

I have to launch an application first otherwise the resolution falls back down
to 1920. that is not correct:
the issue seems also to be time related. If I wait after logging in the
resolution will be more probable accepted.

Additionally some applications seem to make it impossible to get the
higher resolution (for example HipChat). On the start the resolution
will fall back immediately and it is impossible to increase it as long
as the application is open.

On applications like eog or the ubuntu system settings, the resolution
will also fallback to the lower, but after execution the xrandr-commands
again, the resolution will be accepted by the system.

[Bug 1357665] [NEW] UI is useless if having two monitors and using just the external one

2014-08-16 Thread Alexander Adam
Public bug reported:

When I am home, I put my notebook on an external monitor and just use this one.
While this causes already pain since 14.04 [1], I noticed that the UI for the
login is absolutely useless for someone who doesn't how the
multi-monitor-functionality on lightdm works.

If the integrated monitor is off and I am just using the external one,
lightdm shows the login screen on the integrated monitor anyway (the
login screen is therefore invisible).

What I can see in this moment is just a screen with the Ubuntu logo. No
cursor, no message and nothing else that could tell the user that he can
login now.

So even if the behaviour, that the login screen would be shown on the
correct monitor, it would be useful to give the user a hint how he could
login (while it could be that he is looking on the wrong monitor).

For example an arrow on the edge which indicates where the cursor is. So if
someone moves the mouse he will see, that the mouse still works (which isn't
the case now).
And somehow it should be communicated, that the login screen is on another
monitor (something which says hey, the login screen you are looking for is on
the left side, so you have to move the mouse cursor on the right side if you
want to see it.).

[Bug 1318334] Re: Most of the launcher and top bar freeze occasionally

Yes it is a dual screen configuration (DELL UX2711 on an ASUS UX31A) but I have

Sometimes 'it just happens'.

Yesterday the problem was 'fixed' as I locked the screen and unlocked it

xrandr commands for using the correct resolution for the monitor (also
described in another bug report:

[Bug 1318334] [NEW] Most of the launcher and top bar freeze occasionally

2014-05-11 Thread Alexander Adam
Public bug reported:

I think this happens mostly after locking and unlocking again.
Clicking on the trash bin works as well as the tray icons.

I switch the focussed application the title bar also changes but I am unable to
reach the application menu.
Launching applications by clicking on the launcher icons doesn't work but the
icons refresh themselves on state differences.

So I am able to see wether an application is started and the workspace
indicator also refreshes.

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 with Unity 7.2.0+14.04.20140423-0ubuntu1.2 and this
problem is available since I upgraded to 14.04.
This bugs me a lot (happens on a daily basis).

PS: it is currently frozen if that helps in the combination with the
data from apport

[Bug 1310745] Re: keep custom resolutions

2014-05-11 Thread Alexander Adam
I have to add that the whole resolution setting process I described
above became so complicated with ubuntu 14.04 that I have to execute
these commands a few times until this works.

Sometimes it seem to setup an even smaller resolution while the mouse
cursor is setup for another resolution. So you can't use the mouse while
the rendering of the mouse cursor doesn't match to the real position of
the cursor.

[Bug 1285614] Re: Mouse click offset

2014-05-11 Thread Alexander Adam
I can reproduce this since 14.04 (I described it on a bug to another
problem: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-settings-
daemon/+bug/1310745/comments/1 ).

My graphics card is from intel:
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics
Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Zenbook Prime UX31A
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 44
Memory at f780 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M]
Memory at e000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
I/O ports at f000 [size=64]
Expansion ROM at unassigned [disabled]
Capabilities: [90] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit-
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [a4] PCI Advanced Features
Kernel driver in use: i915

When I want to use a high resolution on my external monitor I execute:

xrandr --newmode 2560x1440_35.00 173.58 2560 2696 2968 3376 1440 1441 1444
1469 -HSync +Vsync
xrandr --addmode HDMI1 2560x1440_35.00
xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 2560x1440_35 --output eDP1 --off

While this doesn't work reliable on 14.04. anymore (other bug) the first
or second time I execute these lines there is a state where the
resolution is much smaller and the mouse cursor doesn't matches to the
things you want to click.

[Bug 1243806] Re: The names column has its width dictated by other columns

2014-05-11 Thread Alexander Adam
This is especially nasty while nautilus doesn't really distinguish between the
filetypes anymore.
So an .epub, .doc, .mobi, .odt and a .pdf will always show as 'Document' in the
type column.

While I am interested in the in the real filetype, I had to remove the type
column and add the mime-type column which made the 'too small name column' just
worse while mime types are very big.
You can't even make the mime-type column smaller, so that bug here just made
nautilus unusable for me.

If even would switch to nautilus again if this mega-package of bugs
would be fixed. :-)

[Bug 1310745] [NEW] keep custom resolutions

2014-04-21 Thread Alexander Adam
Public bug reported:

I work with an ASUS Zenbook UX31A and put it on the Dell monitor U2711.
The Zenbook has HDMI output.

While the monitor supports 2560x1600 there is always just max 1920x1080
selectable due to wrong EDID-informations (I am not entirely sure about the
cause anymore).
That wasn't a (big) problem for me, until now, while the ubuntu wiki describes
how to add undetected resolutions (
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution#Adding_undetected_resolutions ).

When I attached the Dell monitor I just executed a shell script which
adds the modes as described in the wiki.

Now I updated to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS which changed the game:
When I start Unity, I have to launch an application first otherwise the
resolution falls back down to 1920.
When I have the 2560-resolution and I open the ubuntu settings, the resolution
falls back again.
When I start the image viewer (eog), the resolution falls back again.

This is really annoying and it would be great if there would be a
solution.

PS: this where the lines I used (I got them from a forum)

xrandr --newmode 2560x1440_35.00 173.58 2560 2696 2968 3376 1440 1441 1444

With manual partition mode, then choosing the recomended partition scheme and

After trying to set the boot flag will show the process bar shortly and

[Bug 508522] Re: Mic is not available with A2DP Bluetooth profile

2013-07-31 Thread Alexander Adam
Yes, obviously this seems to be anyhow tricky.
Some people say that A2DP doesn't support unidirectionaly streams (ie D.
Brodzik and SpudULike here in this thread or like nick parlante found out by
googling).

Some people say that it is possible but there are no headsets supporting
it ( http://osdir.com/ml/linux.bluez.devel/2005-01/msg00187.html ) [1].

Otherwise it is working in other operating systems and also wikipedia
says that is designed to transfer a *uni-directional* 2-channel stereo
audio stream (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A2DP#Advanced_Audio_Distribution_Profile_.28A2DP.29
).

I don't have any clue about, what things are working and what aren't. I
just see the problem.

What would help:
2011 Alexander Skwar asked wether it is possible at least to switch the
profiles automatically, depending on what are you doing (A2DP everytime you are
just listening and HSP when starting a call with ekiga/skype).
Colin Guthrie responded that they are working on it (
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/pulseaudio-discuss/2011-September/011296.html
 /
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/pulseaudio-discuss/2011-September/011300.html
 ).
But at least on my computer now with Ubuntu 13.04 and ASUS Zenbook UX31A, the
standard choosen profile is HSP and therefore terrible sounding.

Anyhow, I also doesn't have the impression that we are making any
progress here. :-)

[1] I have to admit that this message is from 2005 and not up-to-date for sure
. I just
wanted to show that you will find many facts and opinions in the web.

[Bug 449208] Re: touchpad tap-to-click response delayed .5 seconds

2013-07-26 Thread Alexander Adam
Actually I also had the impression that the touchpad responds somehow slow.
I use a ASUS Zenbook UX31A and found this bug report by accident.
While everything else is configurable via gui settings the tap to click
response is just slow.

For me

synclient FastTaps=1 MaxDoubleTapTime=100

fixed the problem but I don't understand why it isn't the default. I
know other people which use Ubuntu and sometimes tap a few times because
the default settings just feel unresponsive.

[Bug 1193886] [NEW] Desktop won't get repainted properly

2013-06-23 Thread Alexander Adam
Public bug reported:

At first I thought it is issue #755230 but that looks totally different.
Since today I have some graphical errors on the desktop.

While I activated the Gnome PPA I was displeased with the new Nautilus
(no meaningful type-column, unintelligent not resizable columns) I
used PCmanFM for handling the desktop (as a side effect this fm is
*much* faster).

I switched to PCmanFM by deactivating Nautilus handling the desktop with
the gnome tweak tool. Then I added

pcmanfm --desktop

to the list of start programs.

Today I installed and tried other desktop environments (e17, lxde and xfce) via
the default ubuntu sources (but these shouldn't affect unity).
I deactivaed PCmanFM again while the list of start programs is also executed on
the other desktop environments and I also wanted to try the other file managers.
So I removed the pcmanfm start entry and switched on nautilus desktop handling
for unity and gnome.

Since then I have the problem, that the desktop won't be redrawn properly.
I don't know wether this process is somehow relevant to this issue but I am
pretty sure that this were all changes.

Every animation or window will be drawn on top what was drawn before.

I have a ASUS Zenbook U31A and Ubuntu 13.04 (amd64) with Intel Ivybridge.
Unity version is 7.0.0daily13.04.18~13.04-0ubuntu1.

but in my case no /debug/dri/0/i915_error_state could be found (while
the bug-gui-tool asked wether to send the data to launchpad this could
be reason for the missing file I think - does it remove the file(s)
afterwards?).

The interesting point is that I got in this state when trying to watch a
railscast episode in the browser and pressed the fullscreen-button. The screen
became black so I minimized again and everythink was fine again. Doing this a
few times and the exception window came up.
GUI operations are very slow now and and many element won't repaint properly
(ie when scrolling).

I used chromium 24.0.1312.56-0ubuntu0.12.10.3 (if it is somehow
relevant).

find it attached.

If I type and bug appears (in my case on gnome 3) the gnome shell search field
gets the focus.
So every character I type after the focus change appears clearly visible for
every person sitting around me (or following vnc stream etc).
Typing the passphrase of an super user in a clear text field is definitely
something which is somehow relevant (at least in my opinion).

[Bug 1043769] Re: Monitor image not clickable in display settings after the first time

2012-11-25 Thread Alexander Adam
I have the same problem in x64 Ubuntu and Gnome.
Since 12.10 display management absolutely doesn't work for me on new user
accounts.
Displays are rarely selectable and switching to some unspectacular
configurations lead to graphical errors, black screen or logouts.

I use an ASUS Zenbook UX31A with DELL U2711 via HDMI.

[Bug 1082972] [NEW] Launching apps with pkexec exits before I am able to type the password

2012-11-25 Thread Alexander Adam
Public bug reported:

If I want to open an application which needs su rights via pkexec I am
able to type some characters until the message follows Entschuldigung,
das hat nicht geklappt. Bitte versuchen Sie es erneut. (it is german
but I don't know the exact original string or find the original string
out in an easy way. It says something like Sorry but that did not work.
Please try again) and the dialogue disappears before I am able to
complete my passphrase or press return key.

Initially I found the bug by trying to start applications (ie gparted)
via gnome shell.

[Bug 48734] Re: Home permissions too open

2012-11-14 Thread Alexander Adam
Sorry but the decision still doesn't make any sense to me.
I have to change the default permissions on every installation which is indeed
*not* usability friendly.

Besides that the public-dir would be perfect for this (wouldn't it be possible
to symlink public to a directory outside of users home and so leave it
accessible for everyone?): I never ever intenionally shared files between
home-dirs.
Addionally I have to add that I even talked with many colleagues and friends
for this feature and (surprise surprise) they also don't use this feature.

But many people doesn't know that a default ubuntu-installation behaves like
this. And this is the real danger.
If you want a proof you can find many more people in the web who where negative
surprised (besides the ones in this bug-ticket).
Wether in ubuntu forums, askubuntu.com, blogs or here on launchpad: obviously
no one is expecting that.

And even IF Colin Watson amazingly really have more cases with public
read access than private access then it should be at least decidable by
the user (as mentioned by himself in #8). And I don't mean by
/etc/adduser.conf but in the GUI (ie an checkbox in usermanagement
wether the home-dir should be readable and/or a checkbox on the
installer).

Furthermore like David Henningsson already said: if you have even a
public dir wouldn't it be intuitive to expect that the other directories
and files aren't public?

I totally agree with aysiu what the defaults should like and I also
think like flaccid that even IF somewant WANTS to share his home-dir it
is the worst idea to share files. There are thousands of possibilities
but sharing the whole home directory should be the default?

Marc Deslauriers even if every tool which stores the permissions
correct: as long as the user doesn't knows that his files are visible it
is still an terrible issue - isn't it? If the user manages his files
which leads to unintentinally public data there is definitely a need to
improve something.

It was a phantastic step to offer simple solutions for encrypting the whole
disk, home- or private-dir. But even if I have a fresh installation with an
encrypted disk and I prohibited booting from usb or networking there could be a
case like this:
I am booting the system (type the passphrase) and leaving the room for a moment
than someone could login to the (default-activated?) guest login and steal my
data. In this case the attacker needs nearly nothing for getting everything.
And even in smaller circles when family members share accounts on one
computer they mostly expect their home dir is their little home - including a
little amount of privacy.

And to complete the analogy in real life. See the home-dir like a real
home with your own room. Inner-flat doors are often lockable even if you
know that these locks give just a low-level-security.

For a project which claims to listen to their customers: with all due
respect but nobody seems to really listen here (or on ubuntu forums,
askubuntu, …) while they are good reasons mentioned for a meaningful
revision.

So Mark Shuttleworth: No facts or circumstances changed, because there
are still many people who think that the default is wrong, but is that
really not a reason enough?

Or make a poll and ask them at least.

[Bug 916621] Re: fan of 700Z3A is always noisy

2012-01-17 Thread Alexander Adam
Do you still use vgaswitcheroo then or do you just use the integrated graphics
card and are unable to switch to the dedicated one?
If your system is noisy without blacklisting the radeon driver it could be that
vgaswitcheroo doesn't work right and associated with
https://bugs.launchpad.net/lpbugreporter/+bug/752542 - right?

I also tried blacklisting, but perhaps I've done something wrong because the
module still appears in lsmod!?
But in dmesg I can read:

$ dmesg | grep radeon
…
[3.308864] [drm] Initialized radeon 2.11.0 20080528 for :01:00.0 on
minor 1
[ 25.990893] radeon: switched off

Perhaps vgaswitcheroo still loads the radeon module and ignores my blacklist?
With focus on noisyness the entry definitely makes no, or at least no
remarkable, difference.

[Bug 916621] Re: fan of 700Z3A is always noisy

2012-01-17 Thread Alexander Adam
Ah ok. update-initramfs -u helped me to unload this.
So with blacklisting radeon it got definitely less noisy (but never silent). :-(

If someone has an hint what else could prevent the fan action I am sure
that acceptable working is finally pretty close. :-)

[Bug 902572] Re: Mic from bluetooth headset not recognized

2012-01-16 Thread Alexander Adam
Ok. I did not had the time to test 3.2 yet.
I think I tested it already and it didnt worked - but I am not sure so I have
to prove it again. :-)
Under 3.0 and 3.1 it doesn't work.

Today I found out that the microphone is recognized when I change the profile
in the gnome audio settings from A2DP to HSP/HFP.
But the audio quality is terrible then.

[Bug 902572] Re: Mic from bluetooth headset not recognized

2012-01-16 Thread Alexander Adam
Okay. Now I was curious. In v3.2.1-precise the headset appears again in the
bluetooth settings but the bug persists.
So the mic from headset is only recognized when I change the profile to HSP/HFP.

[Bug 902572] Re: Mic from bluetooth headset not recognized

2012-01-16 Thread Alexander Adam
Ok. Now I tested v3.2-rc4-oneiric.
WIth this kernel Bluetooth behaves very strange. I can in bluetooth settings
the headset appears as connected but it is not visible in audio settings at
all. So it looks like a different bug which prevents me from testing the bug in
this ticket.

PS: And I have no wifi with this kernel.
