[Bug 1881923] Re: No icons in file picker

2020-12-02 Thread AllesMeins
Unfortunately I can't - this time the issue didn't persist. When I
restarted my system this morning everything is back to normal and all
the icons are back. I'm sorry - I wish I could be of more help. I will
monitor it and get back to you, if the issue occures once again.

It just happened again... Yesterday my chromium was fine, today all
icons in file-picker are gone again... I didn't change anything on my
system or in chromium since then (besides the regular updates). So i
there is anything I can do to help you locate the issue.

[Bug 1876505] [NEW] vlc creates "zombie-process" when closing while video is playing

2020-05-02 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

Since I did the upgrade to 20.04 vlc does no longer close correctly. If
I close vlc while a video is still playing, the window disappears but a
vlc process keeps active in my process-list. Also the little systray-
icon stays. If I browse thru many videos a lot of vlc processes clutter
up my system. If the video is stopped, vlc closes regularly.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open a video with vlc
2. Close the player while the video is playing

What happens:

The vlc window vanishes, but a vlc process stays active in the
background, consuming memory. If enabled the systray-icon also stays

[Bug 998492] Re: Fails to detect package download errors on architectures other than amd64

2020-04-07 Thread AllesMeins
Just had the 20.04 Beta installation crashing on me and was sent here by
the crash reporter claiming that this bug had already been filed?!?

I did a "minimal install" on an amd64 system and the installer just
crashed near the end (installing packages). Unfortunatly it didn't
display any error besides the information that it just crashed and there
is no error-report stored in /var/crash - so I can't tell what exactly
the error was and why I was sended here. I'm attaching the dkpg and
installer log - maybe you can find something usefull in there.

[Bug 657128] [NEW] settings dialogue changes save folder

2010-10-08 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

In the settings-Dialogue the "save backup to"-folder changes by itself.
Every time I open it the pre-defined value is the parent-folder from
that actually selected. So with every change i make to the settings i
need to correct this, otherwise it would keep changing up and up. This
seems to only happen when I'm using the root-version. I'll attach my
current config

[Bug 611015] [NEW] publish url should not be guessable

2010-07-28 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

When publishing files via ubuntuone it looks like the urls are assigned in a
consecutive order (Aaa, Aab, Aac,...). I don't think this is a good idea. They
should contain some kind of randomness. Just by trying some addresses I was
able to download some files containing possibly sensitive data.
And it would be easy to write a script that downloads many files enabling me to
get a specific file only by knowing that it was published but without the exact
address.

Just imagine a possible scenario: I get the information that my boss
uses ubuntu one to get an important paper to somebody else. With a
little knowledge when it was published it is easy to guess the adress
and get the file without even knowing the filename. I know ubuntuone is
not a high-security-service but the seemingly cryptic URL and the the
fact that other filehosters like rapidshare or megaupload are using
randomized addresses gives the user a false impression of security.

[Bug 566270] [NEW] strange colors and "older" desktop look-and-feel before complete crash

2010-04-18 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

A few days ago my system started crashing preceded by really strange behavior.
First I see some strange colors in the upper half of the screen, than the
mouse-pointer gets bigger (as if a blank line was insert after every line - one
line of the pointer-shape, one blank, one of the pointer,...). After that my
Desktop falls back to an "older" looking theme. Something like the first
XFCE-Versions - no round edges, everything flat - pretty much what Linux looked
10 Years ago or so. Even some of the panel icons change (for example I'm using
the "Action Button" icon to open the logout and shutdown dialog - usually it
shows an open door, but than it shows a green man like the one on the
emergency-exit signs). At that point the system reacts really slow to inputs
(if at all) and a fem minutes later the screen goes black and I've to restart.
All this seems to happen completely at random. I didn't change any hardware or
system configuration recently it just began.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: Your system might become unstable now and might need to be
restarted.

Bug still exists. Quick-Steps to reproduce:

1.) Create a directory named "=test=" (or any other name with an "=" in it)
2.) Open sbackup-config program and add the directory to the exclude-list
3.) save
4.) run sudo sbackupd

[Bug 517620] Re: German "Umlaute" (and probably other special characters) in path trigger erratic behavior

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xfce4-terminal

Problem: When typing and editing comands that are longer than one line
and the path contains "umlaute" characters go missing (they are no onger
displayed, but are still present when command is executed), characters
appear in the wrong place, copying this command does not work etc. This
makes it impossible to write the command you want to

  How to reprodude:

1.) Create an folder with special character in its name. For example
"testütestä"
  2.) Change into that folder
3.) Type a long command (long enough, that it doesn't fit into one line) or
use the "up"-key to get one from your bash-history that is long enough
4.) Move cursor back to first line and try to edit the entered command
somewhere in the middle
5.) Notice the strange behavior (characters apperear at the wrong place,
pressing "del" deletes more than one character etc.)

In this directory copying the entered command will not work correctly
either. Instead of copying the complete command as one line as usual it
is split in two diffrent lines resulting in the execution of the first
half, when you paste it back again.

-
- My guess is, that the number of characters that will fit in the rest of the
line is calculated wrong because of the special characters.

[Bug 489278] [NEW] Apparmor should notify the user when it blocks access

2009-11-27 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apparmor

Well I'm not entirely convinced that this is a bug, but the folks at
ubuntu-brainstorm rejected it as an idea, claiming it is a bug [1]. So
here I am...

AppArmor is a great tool. But the normal user is not aware of it. This leads to
problems when Apparmor blocks access to certain resources.
For example: My Firefox recently stopped launching external applications.
Directly opening torrent-files with transmission did not work, the option "Open
containing folder" for downloaded files did no longer work, directly launching
my mp3-player failed etc. - and everything without a single message. It just
did not do anything...

The reason for this was - as you might have guessed - apparmor blocking access
to those applications. At the time i didn't know that (=didn't thought of
that). For all i knew a part of firefox just stopped working. So I started
examine my firefox - disabled addons, launched it from a terminal to see if it
gives error messages, searched if it was a known issue, even thought about
reporting it as a bug to the firefox-developers.
It was mere coincidence that I saw a headline containing "AppArmor" at the
ubuntu-forum where I was going to ask for help. At that moment I realized what
might be the problem, so i checked the system logs. Bottom line: It was just
luck, that I'd read what AppArmor is a few month ago, already had an (slightly
different) "Apparmor incident" with mysql when trying to move its
data-directory this summer, saw that headline and made the right connection.

There should be a warning, visible to the normal user (a window popping up, an
icon,...) when apparmor blocks access (preferredly with options like "do not
show warnings for this program again","allow access his time","disable profile
completly"), making users more aware of apparmor and giving hints, when it
blocks legit requests.
Just putting it in the system log is not sufficient, because you have to know
what your looking for to find it (and even for more experienced users dmesg is
not the first place to look, when a single application acts strangely).

Just putting it in the system log is not sufficient, because you have to know
what your looking for to find it (and even for more experienced users dmesg is
not the first place to look, when a single application acts strangely).

[Bug 412934] [NEW] sbackup fails if exclude-path contains an equal-sign

2009-08-13 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

The title says it pretty much. I've added a directory with an equal-sign
in its name to my exclude list. This causes sbackup to stop working.
Luckily I've noticed it by chance a few days later.

Starting sbackupd from a terminal reports the following:

$ sudo sbackupd
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/sbin/sbackupd", line 213, in
dirconfig = dict([ (k, int(v)) for k,v in conf.items("dirconfig") ] )
ValueError: invalid literal for int() with base 10: 'Backups=_/ = 0'

A second problem is, that the directory in question is not displayed in the
config-dialog. I had to remove it myself in /etc/sbackup.conf to get everything
working again.

Im using Xubuntu 9.04 (amd64)

[Bug 64738] Re: New To-dos are duplicated. (duplicate resources entries)

2009-04-03 Thread AllesMeins
I beg to differ. It is most definitely a bug. I experienced the same,
and a thing like this should not happen by its own. I've never touched
the "KDE Ressources"-Settings and - non-the-less - ended up with these
double-entries after my recent upgrade to KDE 4.

[Bug 347966] [NEW] kdepim (time tracker) loses data when running out of diskspace

2009-03-24 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

When running out of disk space kontact destroys data. I recently ran out
of diskspace while kontact was open and the timetracker was running.
kontact notified me with an warning message. After reading it I freed up
some space and pressed okay. As promised kontact closed itself. After
reopen kontact I noticed that every entry in Time Tracker was gone (even
those, that were not running). Additionally kmail began to redownload
every mail that was already fetched but also left on the server (i've
selected "leave fetched messages on the server") so I'm now having every
mail twice in my folder.

I think kontact should handle running out of space more gracefully.
Losing already stored data like my Time Tracker History is definitely
not an option. Espacialy not if enough space was freed before closing
kontact. At least the option to retry writing the data before going down
should be present. Currently it looks like there is absolutly no way to
rescue the data if you run out of space by accident.

[Bug 238606] Re: Flash player doesn't work properly on Firefox 3 64bits

2009-02-15 Thread AllesMeins
I've the exact same problems. Flash with my Firefox 3.0.5 on kubuntu 8.10
(amd64) just does not work probably. Sometimes it just displays the mentioned
gray squares instead of the flash content. There are some pages where it does
not work at anytime (the new Onion News Player seems to be an example:
http://www.theonion.com/content/video/) and other pages where it happens at
random occasions. Sometimes even with flash objects that worked just fine a few
minutes before.
The log shows the exact same problems ((npviewer.bin:26095): Gtk-WARNING **:
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/libqtcurve.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64),
but these messages also appear, when entering a site where flash is working -
so it probably is not related to the problem.
Can I provide any more input, to help solving this issue?

[Bug 295105] [NEW] Kontact/Kmail loses stored passwords in KWallet on system shutdown

2008-11-07 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

I'm using kwallet to store the passwords for some of my mail accounts. Since
the upgrade to KDE4 i've witnessed a annoying behavior.
My kwallets close after 30 minutes of inactivity. So it offen happens that the
wallet is closed while kontact is still running. When I now shut my system
down, it closes kontact (of cause). When doing so kontact tries to access the
(closed) wallet for a last time and the kwallet password prompt comes up for a
few seconds before it is forced down by the system. If I'm not fast enough in
typing in the password kontact does not get access to the wallet and "forgets"
that there are stored passwords inside the wallet. So the next time I start
kontact it does not even ask to open the wallet and instead prompts me for
every single mail password. I guess it should not do this. And why does kontact
even try to access the wallet on shutdown - every password is already in there
directly after I entered it (I checked with the kwalletmanager).

[Bug 293587] [NEW] Maintenance shell no longer working since 8.10 upgrade

2008-11-04 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

Sometimes I've problems with an external harddrive. On startup this causes
ubuntu to stop booting and to display the "maintenance shell". On 8.04 i could
resume booting by pressing Ctrl+D. This is no longer working. In fact my system
does not react to any normal inputs. Only some unusual keycombinations like
Ctrl+F trigger some kind of reaction (displaying something like "[^F"), most
other keys including [RETURN] are just ignored.
The only way I see to get out of this is by rebooting.

That seems to have helped a little. Installing ia32-libs still puts the 64bit
version in that folder, but after replacing it, it is not overwritten every

If it stays that way i can live with it, but still there seems to be something

[Bug 162630] Re: update puts 64bit liblzo.so.1 in lib32

2007-12-08 Thread AllesMeins
Lets put the link asside - maybe i messed this up, when trying to get my
stuff working again. But the elf64 problem persist. What i just did is
this:

I copied an (older) version of liblzo.so.1 and liblzo.so.1.0.0 i found
in one of the older packages to /usr/lib32 replacing the existing files.
To check everything went right i did

/usr/lib32$ readelf -h liblzo.so.1
ELF Header:
  Magic: 7f 45 4c 46 01 01 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
  Class: ELF32
  Data: 2's complement, little endian
  Version: 1 (current)
  OS/ABI:UNIX - System V
  ABI Version: 0
  Type: DYN (Shared object file)
  Machine: Intel 80386
  Version: 0x1
  Entry point address: 0x2170
Start of program headers: 52 (bytes into file)
Start of section headers: 130072 (bytes into file)

Size of program headers: 32 (bytes)
  Number of program headers: 5
Size of section headers: 40 (bytes)

After that i executed apt-get update and apt-get upgrade (installing the
upgrades for the following packages: comerr-dev e2fslibs e2fsprogs
libblkid1 libcomerr2 libss2 libuuid1 uuid-dev). After that I checked on
my files again:

[Bug 162630] update puts 64bit liblzo.so.1 in lib32

2007-11-14 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

I'm sorry - I've no idea what package to select.

I'm using kubuntu on an amd64. To use 32bit programs (mplayer with 32bit
codecs, firefox with 32bit plugins etc) I've some 32bit libs in
/usr/lib32. This worked fine for the last year. But since the gutsy
release every system update keeps putting a 64bit version (Class: ELF64)
of liblzo.so.1 in my /usr/lib32 folder, overwriting the old 32bit
version and keeping my 32bit programs from working. Is this a normal
behavior?

[Bug 109627] de.archive.ubuntu.com feisty/main Translation-en_GB does not work

2007-04-24 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: adept-manager

Scince i've upgraded to feisty (first beta, now final) the adept Updater
has problems fetching the headers from "de.archive.ubuntu.com
feisty/main Translation-en_GB". It fetches all the headers just fine,
but gets stuck at 99% with "downloading" written in the progress-bar of
de.archive.ubuntu.com feisty/main Translation-en_GB. It keeps this way
until i press 'Cancel Download'. After that I can see the list of
updates available.

Why does it get stuck (something wrong with the server?) and shouldn't
be there some sort of timeout?

[Bug 82377] Re: Thunderbird crashes during mozilla import

2007-04-08 Thread AllesMeins
Yes it still happens. But I've problems generating the crash report you've
asked for (I've recently upgraded to feisty). When using KDE it just crashes
silently (DOUBLE-CLICK: 250 --> -1 THRESHOLD: 8 --> -1 Segmentation fault (core
dumped)) but i can't find any core-files. When using gnome "apport" pops up (at
least it used to a few times, now it stopped for some reason) and generates a
crash-report. But I didn't find a way to save it somewhere. It always tries to
generate a new bugreport.
Can you help me? How do i get the needed files? And why isn't apport showing up
anymore - is it because I walked through the bugreporting process until one
step before the end to see if i could get hold of the generated report
somewhere?

[Bug 89782] removing parts of the package makes apt-get autoremove run wild

2007-03-04 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop

I'm a gnome user and recently installed kde for testing purpose using the
"kubuntu-desktop" package. Today I decided to do a little "house cleaning" and
removed unneeded packages/programs. During that i also deleted some packages
included in standard kubuntu and had to delete the "kubuntu-desktop" package
with them (the description said it was save to remove it).
To finish my cleaning i ran "apt-get autoremove" and got a little surprising
result:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  python-elementtree kpdf python2.4-dev ksystemlog krdc ksplash-engine-moodin
  krfb kdeprint ksvg libqt4-qt3support kubuntu-default-settings gtk-qt-engine
  kdepim-kio-plugins kdemultimedia-kfile-plugins kde-style-polyester
  adept-common kio-locate libk3b2 libnl1-pre6 ksnapshot liblockdev1 libkipi0
  adept-installer konqueror-nsplugins libkexif1 [...]
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 140 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B of archives.
After unpacking 278MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

(for a complete output see the attached file)

It seems like removing the "kubuntu-desktop" package causes apt-get to mark
large parts of kde as no longer necessary, making it impossible to remove
single parts of the kubuntu desktop environment and use autoremove at any later
time.
I guess this applies only when the "kubuntu-desktop" package was installed from
the repositories and works the other way round with the "ubuntu-desktop"
package as well.
If this is not fixable there should be a warning in the package description.

[Bug 67835] Re: Kopete tray icon not in tray (gnome desktop)

2007-01-24 Thread AllesMeins
I've the same problem. Unfortunatly the screenshot seems to be
unavailable, so i'm just adding some other strange behaviours i've
noticed with tray-icons for kde-applications under ubuntu gnome.

Sometimes tray-icons are completly missing. There is just an empty space
reserved where the icons should be. This seems to happen completly at random.
I've witnessed a similar behaviour as well with "amarok", so it seems to be not
just an kopete-problem.
Occasionally when the kopete icon is missing, it is placed in an tiny window
(maybe 60x60 px - completly with border and and space for the window-title) at
the top left corner of the desktop (just below the ubuntu-icon in an
standard-gnome).
And at some times the icon appears at the top left corner of the screen
(hovering over the ubuntu icon).

[Bug 78720] Re: "Copy Disc" burns audio disc as data dics

2007-01-12 Thread AllesMeins
I tried both. First i tried duplicating it with "right click" -> "copy
disc" (which resulted in a unplayable cd). And after that for testing
purpose i created an image by right clicking on the Audio CD Icon ->
"copy disc" and than selecting "copy disc to: file image" (resulting in
an invalid image with the error mentioned above).

I'm using Ubuntu Edgy on an amd64. Normal burning of audio CDs from
files on my hard disc (via serpentine) works fine as well as copying
data-cds with the "copy disc"-tool.

[Bug 78720] "Copy Disc" burns audio disc as data dics

2007-01-10 Thread AllesMeins
Public bug reported:

I inserted a (unprotected) audio disc in my second cd-drive. It is detected
correctly as "Audio Disc". But when chosing "Copy Disc" from the context menu
it just burns nonsens leaving me with something that seems to be a data disc
(one 74 minutes long track with random noise). When inserting the disc in my
computer it doesn't even gets recognized as an valid disc.
When using the "copy disc" tool to write the data to an image the resulting
file is "CD-ROM is NOT in ISO 9660 format"
Is the "copy disc"-tool not able to copy audio discs? In that case it should
warn the user and there shouldn't be an entry in the context menu. Or is it
just some sort of bug?
