Very annoying bug!! Why this bug persists since 2013 up to newest Xenial Xerus, eludes me somehow. Is it so difficult to fix? It started to appear on my older Sony Vaio last year with Wiley Werewolf and affects me since without a clear pattern. Sometimes the icons on the desktop remain perfectly arranged for a week or more. Sometimes after a software update the icons are all again grouped together at left side of the desktop and are regrouped there at every reboot, no matter how I arranged them before. And suddeny after a software update everything stays put again for a while as I arranged it ... It would be very nice, if this bug was treatened with a very, very, very, very high priority, as it does affect a truly central part of daily work. And wasn't it always a credo of Linux Development NOT TO BREAK THE DESKTOP? [Bug 1164472] [NEW] Bluefish crashes when saving a lot of open files
Public bug reported: When I open a lot of files (around 20 and more) and search/replace text in them and then try to save all open documents, Bluefish sometimes does not save all the files. Instead, the program opens a window telling me that some files are about to be saved, but nothing happens then. I have to kill Bluefish from the bash. Relaunching Bluefish, the unstored files appear again, but without syntax highlighting, and saving them is not possible. In connection with that bug might be, that Bluefish has sometimes major problems searching/replacing major blocks of code. Sometimes it does not replace it everywhere, sometimes it scrambles existing code and scatters the code, that should be inserted, in small pieces randomly into the existing code. Very ugly! [Bug 872806] [NEW] GIMP and unity-panel-service go mayhem while opening files
Public bug reported: On my Sony Vaio VPCCA (Intel Sandy Bridge), when I select 37 JPG-images with together a size not more than 5 MB and open them with a rightclick and "open with GIMP", GIMP opens them very, very slow. After having opened all pictures it takes about 30 seconds until GIMP is ready. The menus in the unity global menu don't work anymore, and I have to rightclick into an image to get the options. In the background GIMP, unity-panel-service and compiz go mayhem (see screenshot attached) and together sometimes take up over 150% CPU power. Working with images is impossible and GIMP sometimes accepts my changes of an image, sometimes not. This is very annoying!! I not sure, but this could have something to do with with crappy unity/compiz, because I always have similar problems with other programs too. They are slow, laggy, the global menu is not working right, and sometimes the program simply crash without saying anything. Trying to unmount an iphone with a right-click on its unity panel icon crashes gvfs. The icon remains. Clicking again on the iphone icon opens the iphone. Trying to unmount it again with a right-click on its panel icon does nothing: the icon is still there, no information in the status bar, nada! Has it been successfully unmounted? Can I unplug it? Same problem here since weeks on my (rather old) Vaio with 1GB RAM and a Nvidia GeForce 6200 with 128 MB RAM. But white windows only appear, when logging into the unity session; the unity-2D session works flawalessly. This happened with the old Nvidia drivers and happens with the new Nvidia driver 275.09.07, too. So, no progess there. Still no improvemt with the black launcher on my machine with Natty Narwhal and a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 card. The panel is still black, yet transparent with an application running under it. The programs are clickable and popups are showing up (see image). I have now unity 3.8.16 installed and the Nouveau graphic driver enabled (as the Nvidia driver still does not seem to be activateable through jockey). One week ago I upgraded my system from natty to oneiric alpha. Since then the gnome desktop speed has improved a litle bit, but is still very slow (with my Pentium M 1.6 Ghz processor). Due to a development bug in oneiric I have to start unity manually, which gives me the oportunity to watch, what happens while doing stuff on the slow gnome deskop. Allocation is 24x39, but minimum required size is 27x27. I hope those errors help a little bit further to make the oneiric desktop again as fast as it was before Natty. Still no improvemt with the "unity black panel bug" on my machine with a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 card. The panel is still black, yet transparent with an application running under it, and the programs are still clickable and popups are showing (see image). It would be nice though to actually see, what you click :-) I have now unity 3.8.14 installed and the Nouveau graphic driver enabled (as the Nvidia driver still does not seem to be activateable through jockey in Natty). At least Daniel van Vugt's command shows that there really seem two panels to be running above each other: 0x323 "panel": () 1920x24+0+0 +0+0 0x1c3 "panel": () 1920x24+0+0 +0+0 Hopefully the right patch will soon be in the Natty repositories. I encountered the same issue on my older Sony Vaio VGNFS195VP after a fresh installation of Natty Narwhal. For everything I want do on the Desktop, nautilus pushes the CPU of my laptop to 100% for about 3-5 seconds and stalls the whole system (see picture with system monitor). Only after these 3-5 seconds of "nautilus thinking" I can perform the task I wanted to to, be it simply renaming an icon, drawing a selection over some icons, or even moving a single icon around. This is very painfull! I am not able to help any further, but maybe it is just a matter of my old laptops low ressources (Intel Pentium M with 1.60 Mhz, 1 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 6200 Go with 128 MB RAM). Or has it something to do with the transition from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3? By the way, this issue happens either with Unity, Unity-2D or the classic environment and with either the Nvidia driver, the Nouveau 3D accelleration or nothing of them installed. Same issue here with an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 card and the nouveau driver enabled. I did not change anything within the compiz manager, just freshly installed Ubuntu 11.04. The side panel remains black, but the applications are clickable. Resetting Unity with "unity --reset" does nothing. When switching to Unity 2D the panel works fine. Uh, this is a very nasty bug! Same problem here installing grub on a dual boot system with Windows 2000 on /dev/sda1 and Linux on /dev/sda2. Doing an "update-grub" does not recognize the windows partition and does not create an entry in the grub menu. Doing an "grub-install" kills the master boot record of the Windows 2000 partition and prints out the following: /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Sector 32 is already in use by FlexNet; avoiding it. This software may cause boot or other problems in future. Please ask its authors not to store data in the boot track. /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Sector 56 is already in use by FlexNet; avoiding it. This software may cause boot or other problems in future. Please ask its authors not to store data in the boot track. Installation finished. No error reported. After that, the Windows 2000 partition cannot be booted anymore. So I inserted the Windows CD and started up the repair console. After doing an "fixboot" Windows 2000 does boot up again - but Ubuntu does't anymore!!! Hello A similar thing is happening with Ubuntu 11.04 alpha 1 on my Sony Vaio laptop after yesterdays update. After logging into my account the file manager goes crazy and opens a tabed window every second - and this endlessly! The CPU goes up to 100% and stays there - never dropping below 95%! Strangely enough a look into "top" show that there is not a single process going wild. It seems like the file manager is in an infinite loop while autostarting itself. On the other hand, when I log into my account with the safe desktop envirnoment, everything is normal. And more strangely: on the machine in my office running Ubuntu 11.04 alpha 1 too, nothing like this happens. Anyway, I just wanted to add something that has been discussed elsewhere (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util- linux/+bug/432215?comments=all). GM_Ubuntu said that if the Kobil stick does not work, he has to switch back to Windows. I think this is the wrong way. If an enterprise proclaims "user-friendliness" and "simplyness" of its product (https://www.kobil.com/index.php?id=49&L=0) then it really has to work for everybody - especially if that enterprise produces security products for a major Swiss bank! It is not acceptable that they get aware of a problem only AFTER an Ubuntu version has been released and try to fix it somehow within the next week or so. I would at least feel appeased, if they had put some informations about this problem either on the website of the Migrosbank or Kobil - but nothing! Not even the slightest hint or some lines that they are sorry for the inconvenience and working on the problem. This behaviour has nothing to do with user-friendlyness at all! Were I work they call it lack of communication or simply: incompetence! Therefore, I give this bank the month of June to fix it or I am out of this mess!! (Besides: the same lack of communication happened when after an update of the Kobil stick the online access to my account via the Migrosbank website was simply cut off. Asking at the information desk at the bank if I did something wrong, the simple answer was: "No, no, this just does not work anymore. Today I upgrade to the Lucid Lynx release candidate and I was very happy to see
that the problem with the spaces in the mounted M-IDentity usb stick are gone.

On the smelly side of it I was rather not surprised that Kobil's
M-IDentity software does not start up at all - again!! So I edited
/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules as described on the website of
Migrosbank for Ubuntu 9.10
(http://www.migrosbank.ch/de/MBancNet/MIDentity/faq_linuxkonf.htm?popup=)
and changed the value of the usb subsystem from 664 to 666.
After rebooting the computer nothing happens - except for the same old
crappy error message saying that there is a problem with access rights
on the usb device.
Then I found a tip from Stephan Schwerzmann from november 2008
(http://markmail.org/message/3szbsxyya7xj2xkm), saying that you should
not change the rules directly in /lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-
default.rules, but create a separate udev rule for the M-IDentity
device. A very good point! He proposed to create a file
/etc/udev/rules.d/45-midentity-permissions.rules and put the following
content in it:
SUBSYSTEM=="block", ATTR{vendor}=="KOBIL", ATTR{model}=="mIDentity",
GROUP="plugdev"
After rebooting the computer nothing happens - except for the same old
crappy error message saying that there is a problem with access rights
on the usb device.
Therefore, I gave the well explained workaround of GM_Ubuntu (see above)
a shot. I had my concerns that putting a personal udev rule into
/etc/udev/user.rules is really the right way in Lucid Lynx? But I tried
it that way and also with putting it under /lib/udev/ and
/lib/udev/rules.d/. The content of the file user.rules was the
following:
BUS!="usb", ACTION!="add", SUBSYSTEM!="usb_device", GOTO="user_rules_end"
SYSFS{idVendor}=="0d46", SYSFS{idProduct}=="4081", MODE="666", GROUP="plugdev"
LABEL="user_rules_end"
After rebooting the computer nothing happens - except for the same old
crappy error message saying that there is a problem with access rights
on the usb device.
Finally, I thought that at least at Kobil's website there should be
solution for this problem. There is a FAQ for the M-IDentity device,
where you can read that "KOBIL mIDentity supports Windows 2000 (min.
Service Pack 3), Windows XP (min. Service Pack 1) and Windows 2003
Server (since Version 1.1.4)"

systems.html) and a PDF in German that offers solution approaches if the
software does not start under Windows XP and Windows Vista

linux user you start to get the feeling that the linux help offered by
Kobil is rather FUCK that FAQ.
But, isn't there something written about linux support in the front page
advertisement of the great Kobil M-IDentity device? Of course!! There it
is: "User-friendliness and security are the principal concerns of KOBIL.
The user simply inserts the mIDentity into the USB port of any Windows,
Mac or Linux computer and no more is required. The user can, for
example, immediately access an online banking account without having to
install any software or drivers. Moreover, the on-board application
starts automatically instead of being executed manually. Real Plug &
Play solutions. See for yourself and let KOBIL technology change your

And no more is required? Damn!! If you have to make half an hour of
finger acrobatics to get the right informations about your stick, write
your own configuration file, create folders, mount and unmount, than
this peace of hardware should be banned and kept off of all users ...
