[Bug 1506744] Re: Newly installed applications do not show in the dash

2016-01-25 Thread Andrea Gamba
I have the same problem on freshly installed 15.10 with recent upgrades.
To me it happened for instance after installation of gimp, texmacs,
streamtuner2... Unity seems sort of slow: for some time I have to call
the program from terminal, then suddenly the program starts being
recognized by Unity. The problem should have a high priority because it
interrupts workflow and gives a feeling that the graphical interface is
buggy. New users can decide that Ubuntu is downright buggy and not work
using, especially if told that to launch a newly installed application
they have to open a terminal and type a command in it.

[Bug 220224] Re: Hibernate/Suspend doesn't work on Jaunty on HP530

Lock lights blink, then the pc switches off. Afterwards, /home does not
mount, X server doesn't start, and I have to reinstall the system. It's
a rather severe problem. It is possibly linked with wireless drivers
since it apparently always happened when I was using a wireless

[Bug 58498] Re: Can't init Maxima session within TeXmacs

2008-05-05 Thread Andrea Gamba
There should be an ubuntu maintainer for texmacs and related packages,
such as the scripts for the various sessions. I am not competent to do
that, although I am a texmacs user and try to find workarounds for the
problems I encounter.

Texmacs should be of special interest to this group:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuScience

By the way, pressure from the Ubuntu community could help texmacs to
reach the degree of user-friendliness that would prompt its larger
adoption.

Texmacs is a great program which is kept at 80% of its possibilities:
it's one of the few technical innovations around, and it's really great
(almost unique) to work with, but there are also some stumbling blocks
that the developers have been underestimating for years, such as
perfecting the session scripts, improving the graphical interface,
bibliography management, styles availability, latex compatibility
(although this one is not bad already), documentation. With some effort
in these directions (which with some reason the developers expect should
be done in part by the community) it would see much larger adoption,
without it it's doomed to interest only a small niche of users (also
considering that the physical-mathematical community is not large in
itself).

There are also sinergies which are not exploited: a carefully tuned and
well documented texmacs+scipy package could be a professional
alternative to Matlab (it is harder to produce a professional
alternative to Maple or Mathematica since there are no open-source
project at the same level of perfection - I have not tried mathemagix
yet but it seems to be in an early stage of development - and probably
is draining resources away from texmacs).

[Bug 58498] Re: Can't init Maxima session within TeXmacs

2008-05-04 Thread Andrea Gamba
The fixes are already described in this page and are trivial, the main
one is changing /bin/sh with /bin/bash in the first lines of the
scripts. But who has the authority to apply them?

The fact that the fixes are trivial does not mean that there is no
problem, the average user should not spend his day looking for fixes in
order to use a program. Many will think that the program is just broken
and give up.

[Bug 152264] Re: Compiz: gksu windows linger

2007-12-06 Thread Andrea Gamba
I experience a similar bug, but worse: the whole gksu window instead of
disappearing becomes white. I use Compiz and Emerald on Gutsy with a 915 Intel
graphic card and the intel driver. The same problem was signalled here, with a
different card:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=626719
I also had some time the same behavior as described in the first comments, and
this too has been noticed before, see for instance here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=514899
It is very annoying because gksu is often used, for instance when running
Synaptic.

[Bug 58498] Re: Can't init Maxima session within TeXmacs

2007-11-19 Thread Andrea Gamba
Maple is not listed anymore in the session list, but a session may be
opened by chosing other and maple. At the beginning did'nt work for
me, but then I discovered the reason: the tm_maple script does which
maple and could not find maple because I had it installed in
/usr/local/maple9.5. I fixed this by making a link to /usr/bin. So it
was essentially my fault, but I am citing this because it may happen to
other people too, since Maple likes to install itself in that kind of
locations.

Actually, that was also the reason of Maple not appearing in the session
list (in Feisty it was found anyway, probably the script looked
explicitly in /usr/local/maple9.5, it would be good to have it still
working that way).

The other problem, cited in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/texmacs/+bug/73393, has been
fixed in Gutsy, the needed file is now in src.9.

So things are working now with Maple, it just has to be discoverable by
the command which maple, which is reasonable.

The minor problem with the gnuplot interface instead is again the fault
of the infamous sh/bash problem, just change sh with bash in the
appropriate place and everything works well, see also

[Bug 163127] group plugin slows down everything

2007-11-16 Thread Andrea Gamba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I am using Compiz on a Toshiba laptop with Intel 915GM graphic card and
Ubuntu Gutsy. Almost everything works perfectly, except the
group/tabbing plugin.

If I select a couple of windows and group/tab them, all other compiz
effects slow down incredibly, and the desktop becomes unusable.

Curiosly, the effect is reversible: after ungrouping/untabbing the
windows things turn back normal.

By the way, the group/tab plugin is a really useful one, it would be
nice to have it functioning.

[Bug 58498] Maxima plugin still broken in Gutsy

2007-11-07 Thread Andrea Gamba
Maxima plugin is still broken in Gutsy: now the message is plug-in
'maxima' not declared.

Maple is not even shown in the session list anymore, although I have it
installed.

Nobody seems to care for texmacs plugins in Ubuntu, so texmacs is
practically unusable as an interface to computer algebra programs for
Ubuntu users, that's a pity.

[Bug 73393] Re: Maple interface broken in Ubuntu Edgy

2007-09-15 Thread Andrea Gamba
The situation now is much worse.

The plugin for Maple appears to not be even loaded by texmacs, the menu
does not give anymore the possibility to open a Maple session.

I don't know now how to have Maple working with texmacs and Ubuntu now
and I am tired of looking for solutions.

The interface for Maxima is present in the menu but I get plugin not
declared

The gnuplot interface works but it has a minor bug (showing an
unnecessary error message).

Texmacs is a truly innovative program, really good for producing
scientific reports, and unique as an interface to many different
programs of symbolic computation.

It is one piece of free software which does not have a commercial
counterpart, it is really unique and innovative.

But it seems to be orphaned on Ubuntu. Ubuntu users like me see only a
bunch of bugs when they try to use Texmacs as an interface e.g. to Maple
or Maxima. That's a pity.

I forgot to say that before that screenshot there is a filesystem check,
which usually ends with The filesystem is clean [ok]. This is also
mentioned in some of the Google hits.

It's not so easy to take a screenshot while the filesystem check is
going on because when it ends the screen is refreshed and you get the
hanging screenshot above.

The Google hits suggest, and I also have a feeling that, not all reboot
produce this behavior, but possibly only the first boot of the day.

[Bug 81395] boot process interrupted by could not kill pid 1984

2007-01-24 Thread Andrea Gamba
Public bug reported:

This problem appeared after upgrade to Edgy.
It happens randomly, and is reproduced on different machines (a desktop and a
Toshiba laptop).
The first boot (of the day? unclear) is interrupted by the message
'could not kill pid 1984'
there is also some message about 'readlink' and /proc/1984/exe.
Switching off and rebooting apparently solves the problem for sometime.
A search on Google confirms that something of this sort is happening, the pid
is not always 1984 however (but it is always 1984 on my laptop). However, it
seems that a bug has not yet been posted, neither a solution has been found.
The problem seems serious: truly, one has just to reboot another time; on the
other hand, something is going sistematically wrong with the boot process.

[Bug 75581] Mathematica plugin for TeXmacs broken in Edgy

2006-12-13 Thread Andrea Gamba
Public bug reported:

Also the Mathematica plugin (as well as the Maple and Maxima plugins) is
broken in Ubuntu Edgy, since the file tm_mathematica.c is missing from
the distribution.

The simple fix is to go to the page www.texmacs.org, download an rpm for
the last version of texmacs (1.0.6.7), extract the directory
plugin/mathematica and use it to substitute the plugin in
/usr/share/texmacs/TeXmacs/plugins. Everything should work then (checked
with Mathematica 5.2).

Please correct these bugs: texmacs is extremely useful as an interface
to various mathematical programs, but the user should be allowed to run
the plugins seamlessly.

TeXmacs has the potential to become a standard for the production of
scientific papers, and that's a pity that Ubuntu is not supporting it as
it deserves (how is it that most bugs in TeXmacs are still unconfirmed
although they are so easily reproduced and fixed?)

The problem is due to a directory which is missing in Edgy. It can be

[Bug 58498] Re: Can't init Maxima session within TeXmacs

2006-11-25 Thread Andrea Gamba
Actually

/usr/lib/texmacs/TeXmacs/bin/tm_maxima

still gives

ed Unsupported version of maxima:

even after the fix sh - bash

but texmacs seems to recognize maxima anyway.

[Bug 42697] Re: cannot play flash-animation in firefox

2006-10-30 Thread Andrea Gamba
The problem of flash-animation not playing in firefox after upgrade to
Edgy seems related to some conflict between packages. I solved it
following the hints given in

http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=526816

I removed all flash-related packages:

sudo apt-get --purge remove libswfdec0.3
sudo apt-get --purge remove libflash-mozplugin
sudo apt-get --purge remove libflash0c2
sudo apt-get --purge remove gstreamer0.8-swfdec
sudo apt-get --purge remove flashplugin-nonfree
sudo apt-get --purge remove libflash-mozplugin

and installed Flash Player 9 for Linux: BETA
from the Adobe site. Now everything works.

[Bug 69152] Problems with Alps touchpad after upgrade to Edgy

2006-10-29 Thread Andrea Gamba
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

My Alps touchpad worked perfectly with Dapper on a Toshiba Satellite
M70-165. After upgrade to Edgy I got the following problem:

-  when xserver is started I have tapping but not scrolling;

- if I switch to tty with Ctrl-Alt-F1 and come back to X with Ctrl-
Alt-F7 I get scrolling (buttons 4, 5) but no tapping.

The touchpad is recognized and synclient apparently works.

My xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log follow:

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.

# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg

[Bug 69152] Re: Problems with Alps touchpad after upgrade to Edgy

2006-10-29 Thread Andrea Gamba
My xorg.conf lacked the option

 Option Device/dev/psaux

however, after adding it, nothing changes.

In particular, different events are assigned each time:

$ grep -i event /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(--) Alps Touchpad auto-dev sets device to /dev/input/event2
(**) Option Device /dev/input/event2
(**) Alps Touchpad: always reports core events

(II) Module synaptics: vendor=The XFree86 Project

(II) Synaptics touchpad driver version 0.14.6 (1406)
Synaptics DeviceInit called
SynapticsCtrl called.
Synaptics DeviceOn called
Synaptics DeviceOff called
Synaptics DeviceOn called

The single DeviceOff in this log apparently correspond to switching once
to tty and back.

Its effect seems to be to enable scrolling and disabling tapping. Weird.

[Bug 60752] Re: Does not resume from suspend

2006-09-25 Thread Andrea Gamba
I think that the importance of the problem should be considered high.

Aiglx is an important innovation with respect to Dapper, it brings
Ubuntu in direct competition with the GUIs of Mac OS or Vista.

However, nobody is going to use Aiglx on the laptop if it impairs useful
features such as hibernate or suspend.

The problem with Aiglx and suspend has been discussed in several places, here
for instance:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=145068page=103

but is still not solved. However, it should be solvable in principle.
