[Bug 576352] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 hangs/locks up often

2010-09-02 Thread Andrew Brown
Simply deleting the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau seems to be working here.
I am running ATI card and this was loaded?? This seems to be the fix
everyone has been looking for...no more locking up. Thanks

[Bug 434578] Re: [IBM 2371GHG] suspend/resume failure

2009-10-03 Thread Andrew Brown
Leann, Thanks. Looking at this in a virtual terminal, I can establish
that this is a suspend problem, and I can repeat it. But it's a slightly
unusual one, and only occurs when I am using a USB 3G modem. Of course,
I do that almost every day when commuting by train, so that it's not
unusual for me.

Steps to repeat:

(1) Establish a wireless connection with USB modem.

(2) Remove modem without formally shutting down network-manager - just
grab and yank (the train is entering a station)

(3) shut lid on laptop.

Expected action: the laptop suspends.
Actual action: the laptop hangs, and cannot be made to suspend by keypress or
resume on lid opening. Only a forced shutdown (with the power button) works,
and that leads, on restart, to the crash report here noted.

WORKAROUND (not actually practical, but informative) Following the advice on
the debugging page you pointed me at, I tried this with a virtual terminal
open. Working that way, sudo pm-suspend works normally unless the usb modem
has been removed (see above).

When that happens, a message appears on the VT saying eg [5766.522282]
option: option_instat_callback: error -108

Attempting to suspend while that message remains on screen leads to the
same hang as before. However, if I press the cursor-up, thus recalling
the previous sudo pm-suspend command, and then press enter, that
works.

Is this helpful? Should the bug be reclassified?

Andrew

[Bug 440530] [NEW] Kernel crash when clicking on crash reporter (!)

2009-10-02 Thread Andrew Brown
Public bug reported:

I had a separate kernel crash when suspending (which has been reported).
However, when the machine restarted, the crash reporter icon was present
in the notification tray, and after working for some hours I clicked it,
just to be tidy. Immediately. I got a second crash, which I am now
reporting. This has happened before, but I did not identify it because
it looked as if the same crash were being reported twice. It wasn't.

Annotation: Your system might become unstable now and might need to be
restarted.

[Bug 439850] [NEW] BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 0010afb0

2009-10-01 Thread Andrew Brown
Public bug reported:

appeared after a suspend failed, which might i turn have had somethign
to do with the fact that I had disconnected a USB modem in a hurry while
shutting down.

In general suspending with Karmic seems to be a stately process: just
pulling out the power cord an dshutting the lid in a hurry will quite
often produce a mysterious hang of this sort.

I'm sorry. I have followed the instructions, but there is something wrong
with the gpg signing, and the new packages just don't show up in synaptic

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: nautilus

This morning I noticed that nautilus on my laptop crashes when trying to
access any remote file share, or the Computer destination or the
wastebasket. This is repeatable every time, and it must have been caused by
a recent update, since it was all working fine three days ago. I can still
connect perfectly well to the network with ssh and so on. Nautilus opens and
navigates my home folders fine; also the file system.

 Steps to repeat:

Attempt to open computer or Network from the standard gnome places menu
 alternatively
Attempt to open Wastebasket from with Nautilus

 Expected result: they open

Actual result: Nautilus crashes with enclosed failure.

What would be very helpful, while this bug is being chased, is if someone
could tell me how to access the list of recent updates to the system, so I
 can try reverting.

[Bug 425453] [NEW] users-admin fails to start from netbook-launcher

Click on System tab and then users and groups starts the users-admin
program.

Throws a cannot start configuration error in a dialog box with only an
OK button.

Work around is to start a process that requires admin authentication then
restart. This seems to fix it for the rest of the time that the user is logged
in.
If admin authorisation has already been requested for a different process the
error is not seen.

On my set-up the admin authorisation is rescinded when the requesting
process terminates.

[Bug 280798] Re: gnome-display-properties dont allow me rotate screen rigth and left but xrandr works fine

The same problem here with an nvdia 5200 card. The manual xrandr
command works fine. But the gnome preference panel only offers me the
choice of being right way up and upside down.

Sorry Leann,
I no longer have the hardware with which I was having problems, so I

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-
image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and
 test.

 --or--

 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer
2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4.
Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced.
You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the
bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please
open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the
2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please
specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26
kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

[Bug 132942] Re: update-notifier upgrade failed

2007-08-16 Thread Andrew Brown-Pearn
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 132941 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132941

I was having the same problem. Not quite sure how to 'fix' it, i did
find a workaround. Just went into synaptic, (which informed me that I
had a broken package) i went to the 'broken' filter, and just removed
the update notifier. Probably not an ideal solution. But it got me going
for now. I suppose i can just apt-get upgrade for now.
