[Bug 219263] Re: Ubuntu Server 8.04 Beta freezes during installation at 75%

2012-04-14 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
This is happening to me with Ubuntu 11.10 Server on Virtual Box for mac
4.1.12

I have just dissabled the network adaptor because I read somewhere that
it could be downloading loads of files and I wanted to rule that out
because I'm on a weak connection.

The installation process gets stuck at 75% with Storing Language as
the message.

[Bug 219263] Re: Ubuntu Server 8.04 Beta freezes during installation at 75%

2012-04-14 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
Just tried it in another VM with more memory. The problem seems to be
that the details on this page
https://help.ubuntu.com/11.10/serverguide/C/preparing-to-install.html
are incorrect. It is impossible to install ubuntu on 128 MB of memory
because of this issue.

I would suggest a change to that serverguide is in order

[Bug 891878] [NEW] iPhone bluetooth tethering only works the first time iPhone is paired

2011-11-17 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
Public bug reported:

I have been able to successfully tether my iPhone with my Ubuntu 11.10
laptop and I'm able to connect to the internet the first time that I
pair the laptop with my iPhone.

I disconnected from the iPhone using the network indicator and then try
to connect again and it will not connect not matter how many times I try
to connect. Even though at this point Ubuntu is disconnected from the
iPhone the iPhone still shows that there is 1 connection.

I try to open the Bluetooth preferences to see what I can do from there
but it now takes a very long time for the bluetooth preferences to open
and when they do it says that the bluetooth is turned off even though it
is not.

The only way to recover from this now is to restart the computer and
then open the bluetooth config and delete the iPhone pair. This way we
can re-pair the iphone and get the first connection to work again!

I have compiled a little video of the above steps so that you can see
for yourself. You can see it here: http://youtu.be/AemTmwYBvbE

If you need me to provide anything else just let me know.

Cheers

[Bug 805400] Re: Lighttp Logrotate config in Lucid has incorrect postrotate command

2011-07-05 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
I would argue that the importance of this bug is actually higher than
medium. In the case where you are using a password protected pem file
(which you really should do for proper security) then your web server
will just die every week and will require manual intervention. This is a
very bad situation in production environments.

[Bug 805400] [NEW] Lighttp Logrotate config in Lucid has incorrect postrotate command

2011-07-04 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
Public bug reported:

Currently the lighttpd logrotate config file (/etc/logrotate.d/lighttpd)
is causing lighttpd to reload after every log rotate. This will cause an
installation with a password protected PEM file for SSL to stop lighttpd
every time the logs are rotated. This is because on lighttpd reload it
will prompt for the PEM passphrase.

The correct way to get lighttpd to reopen its file handles is to pass it
a kill -HUP. This does not cause the service to prompt for the PEM
passphrase and it will not stop the service for unattended log rotates.

This needs to be fixed.

The correct log line as shown on this page
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lighttpd_for_SSL_and_non-SSL should
be:

/bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/lighttpd.pid 2/dev/null` 2 /dev/null ||
true

[Bug 634487] Re: t1.micro instance hangs when installing java

2011-04-27 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
Please tell me this is not intended to be a the fix @Andy... If you have
been following the discussion you will know that the process of
installing on a different size instance and resizing to a micro will
cause random instability and crashes.

The method of changing the instance size should only be used to
*uninstall java* once it has caused your instance to hang.

Can you please describe what the Fix will be for this issue? If it is
a kernel update can you tell me when this fix will be backported to
Lucid.

[Bug 459695] Re: KDE has not Shutdown/Restart buttons if started from GDM

2010-11-04 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
I'm hoping to submit this bug for the SRU process as I consider the fact
that KDE cannot shutdown when GDM is in control to be a major regression
and can severly impact the usability of a system when users are working
with different desktop environments.

Statement of impact:
In a normal multi-user environment the Switch-User functionality is extremely
useful and can be seen as a differentiating factor for systems like Ubuntu if
it works correctly. In the case where different users want to use different
desktop environments the difficulty of switching between users and the apparent
inability of being able to shutdown, restart, hibernate or suspend the machine
from a KDE desktop would discourage them from making use of such a great
feature or of the inherent choice available to them. Another more worrying
scenario could result in the loss of work. Consider the following use case:

User A logs into Gnome and begins editing an important document. after a
reasonable amount of time User A needs to leave the computer temporarily
and forgets to save their work. After 5 minutes the screen saver kicks
in. User B comes along and tries to use the computer but the screen is
locked, but as they are prompted to Switch Users they decide to do so.
User B is presented with the user login screen and has KDE selected as
their session, logs in and checks their email quickly and leaves the
computer. After 5 mins the screensaver kicks in. User A comes back to
the computer and when they are presented with the Screen Locked screen
there is no Switch User button. User A cannot get back into their
session and cannot unlock the screen to log out of User B's session. The
only way for User A to get use of the computer back is to power cycle
the computer and they would loose their unsaved work.

Other scenarios could be constructed that would point out the inability
for the user to figure out how to effectively switch users, shutdown or
other actions listed above.

how the bug has been addressed:
The kworkspace session management class (kdisplaymanager) has been adapted to
use the new GDM ConsoleKit interface when GDM is active.

minimal patch has been attached. this patch has been taken from the up
stream bug.

To reproduce this bug:
Install Ubuntu (regular gnome edition) and install the kubuntu-desktop package.
When asked to choose between GDM and KDM make sure to leave GDM as the active
display manager. Log into any account with a KDE session and you will see no
options to Shutdown, Restart in the menu and Switch user just locks the
screen.

As I mentioned at the begining of this comment, I believe this bug
represents a major regression in the KDE package that happened a log
time ago. The proposed fix, in my personal opinion, is a regression fix.

[Bug 389257] [NEW] kwin desktop recording effect missing

2009-06-18 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kwin

In the Kwin configuration - Desktop Effects - All Effects

I don't have an Effect that has anything to do with kwin recording. I
know it is supposed to be there because it was in the last version of
kde ( and hence kubuntu ) that i tried. It is also mentioned a lot on
the Internet.

In trying to get to the bottom of this i have noticed that libcaptury
was not installed by default in my system, which is odd because a Kwin
developer i was talking to said that it is a requirement for the
recording Effect

Does this mean that kwin was built without it? And if so is there any
way to get it in as a plugin library?

considering that any recordmydesktop based system simply does not work
with kwin/kde nowadays i would suspect that this issue should be put on
a reasonably high priority as there is NO method to screencast in
Kubuntu, that is if this is not an isolated incident.

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 and i have installed the Kubuntu desktop by doing
an apt-get install kubuntu-deskop

[Bug 335803] [NEW] qt applications have render update delay in gnome when compiz is enabled

2009-02-28 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
Public bug reported:

Its a bit of a strange bug, i think it might be related to the fact that
i installed KDE 4.2 using the method discribed at
http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2 i.e. adding the custom reporatories.

The best way to describe this bug is by giving an example.

Open LYX ( which uses the Qt libraries ) and open a file. Everything
looks grand if you use the up and down arrows to navagate, it gets the
hint to redisplay, but if you use the middle mouse button nothing moves!
Well actually you can see the the blinking Text Cursor has moved to
where it is expected to be by moving the middle mouse button but the
rest of the text hasn't moved at all!

To get the rest of the text to move you need to click into the text area
before anything changes.

And as the title of this bug says this only ever happens when compiz is
turned on! If i go to System Preferences appearance Visual Effects
and set the effects to NONE then the problem has gone away. But of
course i can't use any of the useful compiz stuff then in gnome ;)

I've tried to disable the Window Decoration in Compiz cos i thought that
would help but it leaves all of my windows without a title bar and it is
impossible to do anything with.

Anyone able to lend a hand in figuring out what exactly is wrong with
this?

Oh and i'm using Ubuntu 8.10 btw

[Bug 315107] [NEW] Key Values for Documents Need to be constrained to one word

2009-01-08 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: referencer

I've identified this bug and i know how it can be fixed but i don't know
enough about GTK to fix it myself.

The bug: When adding a new document to your library the Key: value can
currently be input as more than one word.
Problem: When using BibTex output from referencer the key needs to be only one
word or else latex programs have bugs. e.g. lyx cannot parse output at all and
you are left with an empty reference.

User oriented Solution: notify user that they have entered a key with spaces in
it and get them to change it before saving entry
Least effort Solution: replace all spaces in key values with underscores.

I have attached a patch for the least Effort Solution and would like it if it
were included somehow ( i don't really know how this is done ). I used git to
generate the patch from the current apt-get source file of referencer in Ibex
referencer-1.1.2 .

This is a reproducible bug that is completely fixed with this patch.

[Bug 252856] [NEW] skge.c crashes and hangs computer

2008-07-29 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24

This is a bit of a strange bug because it only happens on random
occasions, i.e. sometimes ( like now ) i can log into my computer
without any trouble and use the internet.

I'm running Kubuntu 8.04 with 'uname -r' giving 2.6.24-19-generic.

The problem is that the computer hangs, it seems to happen just after
kdm has started giving me about 2~3 seconds to type in my password and
login before the keyboard becomes unresponsive. I only managed to get in
there yesterday and used the mouse with the virtual keyboard to open a
konsole and type dmesg, the output is attached.

I posted a comment on bug 65631 but i was suggested to create a new bug. As i
have learned the skge.c file is to do with gigabit ethernet this is the output

[Bug 182288] blank screen with kwin effects

2008-01-12 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-kde4

When i turned on the kwin effects for the first time i got a black screen that
was flashing ( as if it was trying to do stuff ) and it settled to a blank (
black ) screen without a mouse. after restarting the x server i get a login
screen but after loging in and trying to load the desktop all this happens
again every time i log in.
The set up for that was a Dell 1501 laptop that uses a Radeon Xpress 1100
graphics card and all i had were the drivers included ubuntu.

so i went off and installed the fglrx non free drivers ( version 8.443.1
for my card ) and tried again to login to the session again with
success! the effects were fantastic, but were a bit hard on my old
laptop so i tried to turn them off and the desktop went haywire! only
half drawing everything, sometimes having active windows drawn but
others not drawing all of it. when draging the windows they seemed to do
alright.

so i restart the x session and everything is ok again. i mess around
with everything else and decide to test each of the desktop effects to
see which are slowing me down the most, so i go and enable only the
advanced window managment ones ( and one other but i don't remember
which one it was, it was enabled the first time though and worked then )
and i have the same blank screen.

this time i have the right drivers and no matter how many times i
restart the x session it won't show anything after logging in. i also
restarted and then logged in with the same result.

Enough info for you guys?

I quickly cycled through using alt-tab, a couple of times, and it seems
to be fixed. If anything changes, I will update my post.

Re: [Bug 148958] Re: window title bar disappears completely on all windows

2007-10-30 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
the reason why i asked is that i installed the driver using the new
restricted driver manager, and i do not want to start messing with the
insides of this installation because its just not worth the time. i will
however use compiz if there is no set up time from scratch and if i can help
to make that for everyone else then i would be willing to make the effort
then. but as of now the latest driver was not installed and i can't help
anyone unless the driver is updated in the repos. in my opinion this bug is
a write off for nvidia cards until that time because yes it does fix the
symptoms but not the problem.

if there is anything that i can do to help please let me know

 @Andrew Manson

The instructions included in the link not only show you how to ensure
you have the latest driver. It also has xorg.conf changes/additions.
In my case, the latter is what made the difference since i already had
 the latest driver installed.

[Bug 148958] Re: window title bar disappears completely on all windows

2007-10-23 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
ok, sounds like its working alright for nvidia but it aint working for
my ati card. i've applied all of the fixes that have been listed so far
and i still don't have any progress on getting teh bars to come back.
I'm running Kubuntu on a dell 1501 with a ATI card ( drivers installed
using restricted manager ), the output for it on lspci is 00:01.0 PCI
bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS480 PCI Bridge.

[Output from compiz --replace is :]

Checking for Xgl: present.
Checking for nVidia: not present.
Checking for Xgl: present.
Enabling Xgl with fglrx ATi drivers...
Starting kde-window-decorator
/usr/bin/compiz.real (cube) - Warn: Failed to load slide: freedesktop

also alt tab doesn't work and the ammount of virtual desktops that i
have ( in the little pager view on kicker ) has doubled when i ran
compiz --replace. but when i try to click the virtual desktops then i
can't get to them. also my active edges isn't working any more so i
can't test if all those virtual desktops are there.

i think thats it, i'll keep a close eye on the bug so ask any questions
you want.

also i noticed that when i installed xserver-xgl there was a lot more
flashing randomly at places such as start up that wasn't there before
and that i dont have any of the kdm options such as shutdown, hibernate
any more either. but i can live with that
