[Bug 1410406] Re: black screen after booting, 100% cpu usage
1. About the bug. The algorithm that detects monitors overlapping must be a little smarter. It's solvable, just need some time to fix. You can use active-monitor as workaround. 2. You still will have some issues with your monitors even with that fix. Each your monitor displays the same area (see attachment). [Bug 499754] Re: I can not edit menu entries in alacarte at random - Ubuntu Lucid (10.04)
I'm still running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with GNOME 2.30 at this late date and just encountered this problem after installing LibreOffice 4.3.5, using a DEB archive obtained from LibreOffice.org. I didn't like the way the installer put the entries in the Applications menu and began editing the menu with alacarte (System - Preferences - Main Menu). During this edit I made a mistake, deleting a menu item, so I clicked on the Revert button, after which havoc ensued. A number of custom sub-menus changed from their original names to alacarte-made-x, where x was some number, and those entries became non-editable. The problem appears to have been caused by alacarte improperly deleting one or more of its .directory files in /home/user/.local/share/desktop-directories and *possibly* by the LibreOffice installation causing additional corruption. I was able to recover by using the following steps. 1. In a terminal window in my home directory, I executed sudo chown -R user .config/menus sudo chown -R user .local (Substitute your user name for user.) This fixes improper file ownership issues. Some of the alacarte-made non-editable menu entries now became accessible with the Properties button, but several menus became cross-linked, so that when the name of one menu was changed in the menu editor, the name of another, completely unrelated menu also changed. 2. I looked in my .config/menus directory to find an undo .menu file with a time stamp just after the new package was installed. This was easy, because the file with LibreOffice 4.3.5 had entries containing 4.3.5 that could be found with a text editor. I renamed applications.menu as applications.menu.bak, then copied my chosen .menu .undo-xx file to applications.menu. 3. The first two steps still didn't fully correct the problem, but by looking in .local/share/desktop-directories and examining the contents of the various .directory files and comparing what alacarte-made-x entries there were displayed in my Applications Menu. From this I was able to deduce which .directory files were missing and using gedit I was able to recreate them, using the existing .directory files as a template. Once the missing alacarte-made-x.directory files were restored, the cross-linking of submenu entries in the Applications menu was fixed, allowing all submenus and items to be edited normally again with the Properties button. A more drastic alternative would have been to wipe out the contents of .local/share/desktop-directories and .config/menus and start over, but a bit of patience in performing manual repairs as described above saved me many, many hours of menu creation and customizing. I think this may not be a bug in alacarte as such, but a general lack of robustness in the GNOME 2 menu and the design of alacarte, in that alacarte is unable to detect corruption in the menu files or missing directory files, and simply gets confused. The utility should have automatic error detection and correction built in, or a button or menu that can be invoked manually by the user to repair the menu structure when something goes amiss. There may also be problems with the way the Revert feature works in alacarte, which *may* have been the cause of the problem in this instance. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/499754 Title: I can not edit menu entries in alacarte at random - Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alacarte/+bug/499754/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 527503] Re: Software Center is missing several icons in KDE/Xubuntu
After my 2012-02-10 post I discovered that the missing icons are simply due to them not being present in the desktop theme I selected after installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I chose Clearlooks, and that's when the icons disappeared. By going back to the Ambiance default theme, the icons reappear. See my post this date at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1474552page=2. I've also attached a tar.gz archive of my modified /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/categories directory there to make it easier to patch new 10.04 installations. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/527503 Title: Software Center is missing several icons in KDE/Xubuntu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/software-center/+bug/527503/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 993516] Re: Audacious does not play audio (12.04 upgrade)
Matthew, is the problem occurring with ALL sound files or just a particular file? I've just encountered a strange problem on two different Ubuntu 10.04 LTS computers with completely different hardware, wherein a monaural radio show podcast MP3 file will not play in Audacious 2.3 with the Audacious Mixer enabled. When I turn the mixer off, the sound comes out of the speakers, but, of course, I now have no tone control, because the equalizer is in the mixer section of Audacious. When I play a stereo MP3 file ripped from a music CD, the mixer can be switched on and off at will and sound comes out of the speakers continuously. While Audacious was exhibiting the no-sound problem, all other sound producing programs on the two computers appeared to be working normally. For reference, I tried playing both files with Winamp 2.95 on a Microsoft Windows 98SE machine, and WInamp allowed me to switch the mixer on and off with both files without loss of sound. Although Audacious is a near-clone of Winamp for Linux, in this respect it fails. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993516 Title: Audacious does not play audio (12.04 upgrade) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/audacious/+bug/993516/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 873578] Re: synaptic always crashes on search
Due to this fault with Synaptic Package Manager and a nearly-dead Ubuntu Software Center that I was unable to resurrect, I decided to rebuild my system with Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (issued February 2012) from the LiveCD on another hard drive four weeks ago. Synaptic has not shown the above described crash problem in this new installation. Before committing to building the new 10.04.4 LTS installation, I re-installed Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic Package Manager from the Canonical Lucid Lynx repositories, but it did not fix the problems. My problems with Synaptic and Software Center started in early December 2011 after a troublesome removal of OpenOffice.org and installation of LibreOffice 3 in its place. Neither the uninstallation of OpenOffice.org nor the installation of LibreOffice went smoothly and it took two attempts on my previous 10.04.1 installation. After the first installation of LibreOffice failed, I removed it with Synaptic and it seems to have removed software that it should not have, including my CUPS PDF printer driver and possibly a few more things on which Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic depended. On the second attempt, installation of LibreOffice succeeded, but left Synaptic and Software Center crippled, possibly because LibreOffice installed modified or down-level libraries, which then caused problems with Synaptic and Software Center. I feel that part of the responsibility lies with the poor job that the folks at The Document Foundation did with packaging LibreOffice 3.x for Debian/Ubuntu. The package installation required use of the GNOME Terminal to manually execute commands (sudo dpkg -i *.deb), something that is quite unusual for Debian and Ubuntu software installations. I have LibreOffice 3.4.5 running on 10.04.4 LTS now, but it required doctoring the .tar.gz archive to get it to install properly, including the online LibreOffice Help. Also, in view of my experience, I've disabled the LibreOffice PPA in Software Sources, to prevent any attempts at software upgrades from that organisation until they learn to package software correctly for Debian/Ubuntu. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/873578 Title: synaptic always crashes on search To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+bug/873578/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 527503] Re: Software Center is missing several icons in KDE/Xubuntu
I'm seeing the same problem in Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS with Gnome. The problem appeared after I removed OpenOffice and installed LibreOffice 3.4.5 in its place. I tried removing software-center and reinstalling it from the repository, but it didn't fix the problem. There was an anomaly immediately after the OpenOffice-LibreOffice changeover. When I ran Update Manager it indicated that only a partial upgrade was possible due to a dependency mismatch, or something to that effect. I proceeded with the so-called partial upgrade and happened to notice that it removed cups-pdf in the process, along with several other items that should NOT have been removed, leaving me without a PDF printer driver. I subsequently reinstalled cups-pdf via a terminal window. When I ran Update Manager again it said my system was up-to- date and everything appeared to be in order. However, when I now open Software Center, it runs extremely slowly and the Fonts icon does not get populated. When I click on the various Get Software icons, the subsequent screens take a very long time to load and most of the second- level icons are missing, exactly as shown in the screen shot by Steve Beattie (sbeattie) on 2010-04-06. The animated busy cursor is displayed and the window doesn't get populated with icons at all sometimes.

[Bug 549217] Re: security updates not installed daily as configured
I performed a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS on an AMD Athlon (32-bit) system around the end of November 2010 and selected an update- check interval of every two days, but in the Configuration Editor /apps /update-notifier shows a setting of regular_auto_launch_interval = 7. Since the system was set up it has NEVER displayed an icon in the Indicator Applet on the Gnome panel, although it seems to launch the Update Manager every seven (7) days. If there are critical security updates, I don't see them until the Update Manager is launched, whether automatically or manually. When Update Manager is launched, its button appears in the bottom panel, but a corresponding alert icon never appears in the top panel. There is clearly a disconnect between update interval settings made in the Update Manager and those reflected in the Configuration Editor. [Bug 357204] Re: label of the mouse motion preferences is misleading
This problem is evidently still there in Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS (i386 Desktop). I'm using an Itac Systems, Inc. Mouse-Trak trackball on th PS/2 mouse port, and as-shipped in the LiveCD, it takes multiple spins of the trackball to move the pointer from the left edge of the screen to the right edge. This trackball has its own built-in acceleration control that can be switched on and off with a button, and even with acceleration active it takes multiple spins to traverse the screen. When operating normally, a single spin of the ball is all it takes without acceleration; with acceleration a quick 20-40 degree rotation of the ball does it. (The Itac Mouse-Trak is an industrial trackball with a large, billiard-ball-sized phenolic ball mounted on precision plated steel shafts and ball bearings. When flicked with a fingertip, the ball will continue to spin for a second or so, unlike some cheap trackballs from Logitech, et al, using tiny, marble-sized plastic balls on simple friction bearings.) When I move the mouse sensitivity control to Low, it starts to behave more normally. When I move the sensitivity control to High, the pointer becomes a slug. Conclusion: The mouse sensitivity control sense is most definitely inverted. If it is running over a 0-255 range, as many 8-bit controls do, there may be an inadvertent subtraction or overflow occurring in the settings algorithm. The mouse acceleration control sense appears to work correctly. -- label of the mouse motion preferences is misleading https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/357204 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 338913] [NEW] Search for Files window too big for screen
Public bug reported: In Gnome Desktop v. 2.24.1 (Ubuntu 8.10), build date: 10/24/2008, as more search options are selected, the Search for Files window grows beyond the usable screen bounds, making the Help, Close and Find buttons inaccessible, and/or the title bar becomes inaccessible, making it difficult or impossible to close the window. When Search for Files is started from the top panel Places menu, its title bar usually appears just below the panel at the top of the screen. The bottom edge of the window may be somewhere in the middle of the screen, or just above the lower panel, depending on its size when it was last closed. If one clicks on the Select more options link and then repeatedly clicks on the +Add buttons, the window grows upward and downward until the title bar hits the top panel, and continues to grow underneath the bottom panel, covering up the Help, Close and Find buttons. By clicking on the -Remove buttons, the options can be removed, but the now oversized window doesn't shrink, staying beyond the lower bounds of the screen. With many options activated, the Seach results pane is pushed below the lower screen bounds and, so, even if one could launch a search, the results would be invisible. If one attempts to use Compiz to resize the window to make the bottom buttons accessible by dragging its corners, one can put the title bar under the top panel, making it inaccessible as well, so it is difficult -- or impossible -- to close the window without restarting the Gnome session. The user interface of the Search for Files utility should be entirely redesigned so that the window doesn't grow bigger as more or fewer features are selected; a scroll bar should appear at the right side so one can scroll up and down to view the settings and results, or implement a tabbed scheme so that the settings are on another tab separate from the search results pane. Also, it should be made impossible to put the title bar under a screen feature such that it would become inaccessible for window resizing or window closure. This basic utility needs be made to work properly on screens as small as 640x480 (standard VGA resolution). N.B., my screen size in this instance is 1024x768. This is a usability issue. [Bug 144187] Re: audacious default skins are too uniforms and whites
The default skins for Audacious 1.5.1 (via Ubuntu 8.10) are still awful -- low contrast with microscopic control markings -- causing eyestrain and frustration. All furthe developmentr of XMMS is reported to have been abandoned, as of several years ago; that's why Canonical dropped it from Ubuntu distributions. However, Audacious can use Winamp 2.x Classic skins (.wsz files) without problems; just copy them into the Audacious skins directory (/usr/share/audacious/Skins). You can also open .wsz archives with any program that can manage .zip archives, since .wsz files are simply .zip files that have been renamed, and put the files contained in that archive into a subdirectory under the Audacious skins directory, giving it the name your would like that skin to have. Although it's a bit hard to find, an archive of the Winamp 2.9 Classic skin is available that can be used in Audacious without modification, or the .bmp graphics elements can be edited to take out references to Winamp, plus other customization as one might choose to perform. [Bug 294197] Re: GNOME's Help File Inconsistencies
I also find inconsistencies between the help files and the Sound Preferences dialog box in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). There are numerous references to bell and System Bell, whereas the dialog box uses the term System Beep for the third tab. Also, the terminology used in Table 8-19, System Bell Preferences doesn't match the checkbox and radio button labels on the System Beep tab. After finding the file goscustdesk.xml, located in /usr/share/gnome/help /user-guide/C in my English-language installation, I edited a copy of it with gedit to change all instances of bell to beep, all instances of Bell to Beep, and the contents of Table 8-19 to match the third tab in the Sound Preferences dialog box. (The original file was moved to goscustdesk.xml.original, just in case something went awry.) The revised table 8-19 reads as follows (column formatting may not appear correct in this post): Table 8-19 System Beep Preferences Dialog Element - Description Enable system beep - Select this option to enable the system beep. Visual system beep - Select this option to enable visual feedback to indicate input errors. Flash window titlebar - Select this option if you want window titlebars to flash to indicate an input error. Flash entire screen - Select this option if you want the entire screen to flash to indicate an input error. Such terminology inconsistencies in the help files make it particularly difficult to diagnose and correct system issues for the Ubuntu novice and should be fixed in 7.10, as well as all Ubuntu releases still supported. ** Attachment added: Edited version of goscustdesk.xml http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20149208/goscustdesk.xml -- GNOME's Help File Inconsistencies https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/294197 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 218116] Re: Gnometris keyboard overrun
I don't think this is an issue with the version of Ubuntu I'm running. It's only a problem with the game program design. After playing the game some more, I'd modify my statement: Instead of clearing the keyboard buffer when the block reaches the bottom, there should be a brief interval (about 0.2 second) to allow the block to be shifted left or right one final time after it reaches the bottom, to allow it to tuck under a nearby overhanging block. Then, when the new block appears at the top of the game pane, the keyboard buffer should be cleared, so that the new block is being moved with fresh keystroke inputs, not the keystrokes from the previous block. By holding down one of the cursor keys, it is possible to fill the keyboard buffer up to the point where the game becomes completely unresponsive to the mouse and one can't even interrupt/pause the game. At that point a forced process termination appears to be the only option. By flushing the keyboard buffer as I've described above, I believe this problem can be eliminated. While I wandered about the Web aimlessly, I heard Pedro Villavicencio say: Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. -- Gnometris keyboard overrun https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218116 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
