Public bug reported:

It has now been almost a month with no reaction to KDE security
advisory. Almost all other distros fixed this some time ago...

KDE Project Security Advisory
=

Title: KDE Partition Manager: kpmcore_externalcommand helper can be
exploited in local privilege escalation
Risk Rating: Important
CVE: CVE-2020-27187
Versions:kpmcore == 4.1.0
Author:  Andrius Štikonas
Date:17 October 2020

Overview

kpmcore_externalcommand helper contains a logic flaw in which the service
invoking dbus
is not properly checked. An attacker on your local machine can replace
/etc/fstab,
execute mount and other partitioning related commands while KDE Partition
Manager is running.
mount command can then be used to gain full root privileges.

Impact
==

KDE Partition Manager 4.1.0 should not be used on systems with untrusted
users or running untrusted software.

Solution

KDE Partition Manager 4.2.0 fixes this issue.

You can apply the following patches on top of KPMcore 4.1.0:
https://invent.kde.org/system/kpmcore/-/commit/c466c5db11b5cee546d1ec0594c2f1105a354fed
 (fix)
https://invent.kde.org/system/kpmcore/-/commit/7ec4b611dcf822439b081613cca4184689266454
 (removes KF5 5.73 dependency)

[Bug 1890236] Re: kde partition manager is waiting it appears for /dev/fd0 (no floppy drive)

2020-10-19 Thread Andrius Štikonas
Hmm, so it looks like blockdev --getsize64 /dev/fd0 is taking a long
time.

Can you confirm this without partitionmanager by running

sudo blockdev --getsize64 /dev/fd0

But from dmesg it looks like blockdev just waits for kernel to reply.

This should have been upstream bug report, it doesn't look distro
specific. Anyway, to get some useful info, it would be better to run
partitionmanager with some debugging:

$ KPMCORE_DEBUG=1 partitionmanager

Then it will print to terminal which commands it is running. This might
tell you where it is getting stuck.

Maybe it's time to schedule KTorrent 5.2? I think it also was ported
away from QtWebkit.

[Bug 1752876] Re: sfdisk: allow disabling boot flag on MBR partition table

2018-07-07 Thread Andrius Štikonas
sfdisk has to be run as root but it's fine because KPM KAuth helper can
run commands as root. On the other hand, libparted was a library.

partman might have worked if somebody wrote a backend for it but sfdisk
now has enough functionality anyway. Some things are hard to fix with
libparted, e.g. libparted has no support for hybrid MBR. So we would
just silently corrupt such setups with no way to fix it. We have more
direct control over partition type with sfdisk, although, these
partition flags don't matter that much anyway...

[Bug 1752876] Re: sfdisk: allow disabling boot flag on MBR partition table

2018-07-07 Thread Andrius Štikonas
Anyway, we can probably close this bug. It's not too late for 18.04 and
18.10 has util-linux 2.32 anyway.

Also, we depend on util-linux for file system detection. So using sfdisk
as opposed to partman saves us extra dependency (which is not well
packaged by other distros).

[Bug 1752876] [NEW] sfdisk: allow disabling boot flag on MBR partition table

2018-03-02 Thread Andrius Štikonas
Public bug reported:

I would like to propose the following patch for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

https://github.com/karelzak/util-linux/commit/8175ed3d74adacc895657ded7546cb3c5deeabad

[Impact]

 * This patch allows to use sfdisk to remove boot flag from all MBR partitions.
At the moment you can only "move" boot flag to other partitions.

 * Derivatives of Ubuntu that use Calamares might be impacted by this. At the
moment
KDE Partition Manager and KPMcore (which is used by Calamares installer) are
working on migrating to Polkit, so that they won't need to run GUI as root. One
of the steps was moving from libparted backend to sfdisk backend for
partitioning operations, so kpmcore will require 2.32 or 2.31.1 with this patch
to have full functionality.

[Test Case]

Assuming that your want to deactivate boot flag on /dev/sdb which has
MBR partition table:

sudo sfdisk --activate /dev/sdb -

Without this patch you should see an error message.

With the patch it will print:

The bootable flag on partition 1 is disabled now.

The partition table has been altered.

Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table.

Syncing disks.

[Regression Potential]
.
 * Should be extremely low. The change only adds a couple of lines in one file
which parses arguments of "sfdisk --activate". Nothing would change unless you
run sfdisk --activate

 * This patch does not change any libraries in util-linux, no need to
worry about API/ABI stability.

 * GPT users are not affected at all.

[Other Info]
 * This patch is part of util-linux 2.32.

Well, Arch Linux is not really relevant. A lot of distributions package
it including Fedora and Gentoo. But most of them don't use deb format so
you can't reuse their packaging.

[Bug 1431061] Re: KDE Partition Manager theme is old

2016-11-18 Thread Andrius Štikonas
Well, commit that fixes GUI in case sudo is used is
https://cgit.kde.org/partitionmanager.git/commit/?id=c84026a27e29963137f742941abcb5a4757d3c56

Also related commit for Wayland:
https://cgit.kde.org/partitionmanager.git/commit/?id=3c465a4cb65b897ee093cf582d837bf6ad95c865

How would pkexec improve things? The only difference is that pkexec will
eat more environmental variables than sudo. But we have to pass them
anyway. It's actually harder to pass those variables using pkexec, you
have to do something like pkexec env var=something program and then
pkexec only tells than command env requires root password so user can't
even see what program is really being launched.

Well, to be more precise, Partition Manager does provide a shared
library (kpmcore) but it is already in strech:
https://packages.qa.debian.org/k/kpmcore.html

Well, there is an updated and tested package in neon repositories:
https://packaging.neon.kde.org/neon-packaging/partitionmanager.git/log/?h=Neon/stable

Any reason not to use it?

@Flames_in_Paradise

(1) Well project homepage is better to be set to
https://www.kde.org/applications/system/kdepartitionmanager/

Debian watch file can just track
http://download.kde.org/stable/partitionmanager/

(2) Yeah, CHANGES file is not really updated. I just checked the last
update was in 2010 by Volker Lanz and it wasn't touch since then. I
guess it was git migration then.

Well, Kubuntu might have had feature definition freeze but it certainly
doesn't mean all updates have to stop.

Qt 5.6.1 is already in Ubuntu, so that's enough for KDE Partition
Manager. It will even be enough for KDE Partition Manager 3.0 (that
fixes other bugs here in launchpad reported against partitionmanager: no
theme used and crash). Qt 5.7 will only be required after 3.0

[Bug 1635756] [NEW] KDE Partition Manager 2.2.1 needs packaging

2016-10-21 Thread Andrius Štikonas

newer than what Debian provides (1.0.3)

[Bug 1045896]

2013-02-10 Thread Andrius Štikonas
SVN commit 1337488 by stikonas:

Fix detection of partitions' paths.

Previously, partition number was added to device path.
However, there are devices with more complicated numbering scheme,
e.g. memory cards may have /dev/mmcblk0p1.
It seems that the easiest way to handle this is to use partition
path instead of device path + partition number .

[Bug 565294] Re: Plural translations are broken for Lithuanian language

2010-08-20 Thread Andrius Štikonas
David,

No, only the header of .mo files is good, the files itself are broken.

Upstream (from kdebase) processui.po file contains:

"Plural-Forms: nplurals=4; plural=(n==1 ? 0 : n%10==1 && n%100!=11 ? 1 : n"
"%10>=2 && (n%100<10 || n%100>=20) ? 2 : 3);\n"

#: ksysguardprocesslist.cpp:165
msgid "End Process..."
msgid_plural "End Processes..."
msgstr[0] "Nutraukti procesą..."
msgstr[1] "Nutraukti procesus..."
msgstr[2] "Nutraukti procesus..."
msgstr[3] "Nutraukti procesus..."

On the other hand, processui.mo file exported from Launchpad has:

"Plural-Forms: nplurals=4; plural=(n==1 ? 0 : n%10==1 && n%100!=11 ? 1 : n"
"%10>=2 && (n%100<10 || n%100>=20) ? 2 : 3);\n"

#: ksysguardprocesslist.cpp:165
msgid "End Process..."
msgid_plural "End Processes..."
msgstr[0] "Nutraukti procesą..."
msgstr[1] "Nutraukti procesus..."
msgstr[2] "Nutraukti procesus..."

The last plural form is missing even though the plural header is
correct. And this happens for all plural messages, I've just taken this
as an example.

E.g. dolphin.mo has:

msgctxt "@info"
msgid "%1 item selected"
msgid_plural "%1 items selected"
msgstr[0] "Pažymėtas %1 objektas"
msgstr[1] "Pažymėtas %1 objektas"
msgstr[2] "Pažymėti %1 objektai"

The last form is also missing. I hope that the problem is clear enough
now.

[Bug 565294] Re: Plural translations are broken for Lithuanian language

2010-08-12 Thread Andrius Štikonas
If I run msgunfmt on .mo file I see this in the po file header:
"Plural-Forms: nplurals=4; plural=(n==1 ? 0 : n%10==1 && n%100!=11 ? 1 : n"
"%10>=2 && (n%100<10 || n%100>=20) ? 2 : 3);\n"

but later in the file I can only see msgstr[0], msgstr[1] and msgstr[2]
forms. msgstr[3] form is missing everywhere.

2010-08-11 Thread Andrius Štikonas
I've looked at this issue on Maverick. Plural form header is correct (4
plural forms) in *.mo files but for some reason the actual number of
plural forms is still cut down to 3. This should be happening on Lucid
too unless KDE S.C. 4.5 is installed from PPA which is why I have not
noticed it at first.

There are some strings where either of these choices would be bad. That's
why I support option (b) if it is feasible.

E.g.
Delete this file. (Trinti šį failą)
Delete the following files. (Trinti šiuos failus)
Stripping the 1st form would make the case n==1 clumsy. Stripping the second
case would make cases n==23, 31, etc clumsy. So stripping either of them is
at the best choosing the lesser evil.

Such strings were the main reason why KDE S.C. Lithuanian translators did
such intrusive change. There are a lot of such strings in KDE S.C. and other
projects and it is not possible to fix them without ugly hacks in the source
by adding 2 strings and if-else statements.

Stripping the second form would be more logical, however third and fourth
forms would have to be renumbered in this case, so it is probably not easily
achieved.

b) do not import Lithuanian KDE translations to Launchpad at all, and use

[Bug 565294] Re: Plural translations are broken for Lithuanian language

2010-04-17 Thread Andrius Štikonas
It was done in KDE S.C. since version 4.4.
KDE S.C. Lithuanian translation now use:

"Plural-Forms: nplurals=4; plural=(n==1 ? 0 : n%10==1 && n%100!=11 ? 1 : n%"
"10>=2 && (n%100<10 || n%100>=20) ? 2 : 3);\n"

instead of

"Plural-Forms: nplurals=3; plural=(n%10==1 && n%100!=11 ? 0 : n%10>=2 && (n%"
"100<10 || n%100>=20) ? 1 : 2);\n"

GNOME, Debian, Mozilla, Translation project, etc are still using 3
plural forms and I haven't heard about any plans to change this. So
changing _all_ translations are undesirable.

This is fixed in kernel-package 12.032 which can be found in Debian
squeeze (testing). Maybe somebody can sync this package from Debian.

[Bug 417433] Re: Maxima crashes on solve, finding determinants, and other operations

2009-10-25 Thread Andrius Štikonas
I can confirm this bug. Eg integrate(x**(-5/2)/sqrt(x+2), x, 1, 2);
crashes maxima.

I was able to fix it by updating to maxima 5.19.2 Unfortunately,
wxMaxima crashes with maxima 5.19.2.
