[Bug 1903774] [NEW] kpmcore 4.1.0: CVE-2020-27187
Public bug reported: It has now been almost a month with no reaction to KDE security advisory. Almost all other distros fixed this some time ago... KDE Project Security Advisory = Title: KDE Partition Manager: kpmcore_externalcommand helper can be exploited in local privilege escalation Risk Rating: Important CVE: CVE-2020-27187 Versions:kpmcore == 4.1.0 Author: Andrius Štikonas Date:17 October 2020 Overview kpmcore_externalcommand helper contains a logic flaw in which the service invoking dbus is not properly checked. An attacker on your local machine can replace /etc/fstab, execute mount and other partitioning related commands while KDE Partition Manager is running. mount command can then be used to gain full root privileges. This should have been upstream bug report, it doesn't look distro specific. [Bug 1752876] Re: sfdisk: allow disabling boot flag on MBR partition table
sfdisk has to be run as root but it's fine because KPM KAuth helper can run commands as root. On the other hand, libparted was a library. partman might have worked if somebody wrote a backend for it but sfdisk now has enough functionality anyway. Some things are hard to fix with libparted, e.g. libparted has no support for hybrid MBR. So we would just silently corrupt such setups with no way to fix it. We have more direct control over partition type with sfdisk, although, these partition flags don't matter that much anyway... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1752876 Title: sfdisk: allow disabling boot flag on MBR partition table To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util-linux/+bug/1752876/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1752876] Re: sfdisk: allow disabling boot flag on MBR partition table
Anyway, we can probably close this bug. It's not too late for 18.04 and 18.10 has util-linux 2.32 anyway. Also, we depend on util-linux for file system detection. So using sfdisk as opposed to partman saves us extra dependency (which is not well packaged by other distros). ** Changed in: util-linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Fix Committed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1752876 Title: sfdisk: allow disabling boot flag on MBR partition table To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util-linux/+bug/1752876/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1752876] [NEW] sfdisk: allow disabling boot flag on MBR partition table
Public bug reported: I would like to propose the following patch for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS https://github.com/karelzak/util-linux/commit/8175ed3d74adacc895657ded7546cb3c5deeabad [Impact] * This patch allows to use sfdisk to remove boot flag from all MBR partitions. At the moment you can only "move" boot flag to other partitions. * Derivatives of Ubuntu that use Calamares might be impacted by this. At the moment KDE Partition Manager and KPMcore (which is used by Calamares installer) are working on migrating to Polkit, so that they won't need to run GUI as root. One of the steps was moving from libparted backend to sfdisk backend for partitioning operations, so kpmcore will require 2.32 or 2.31.1 with this patch to have full functionality. [Test Case] Assuming that your want to deactivate boot flag on /dev/sdb which has MBR partition table: sudo sfdisk --activate /dev/sdb - Without this patch you should see an error message. With the patch it will print: The bootable flag on partition 1 is disabled now. The partition table has been altered. Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table. Syncing disks. [Regression Potential] . * Should be extremely low. The change only adds a couple of lines in one file which parses arguments of "sfdisk --activate". Nothing would change unless you run sfdisk --activate * This patch does not change any libraries in util-linux, no need to worry about API/ABI stability. * GPT users are not affected at all. [Other Info] * This patch is part of util-linux 2.32. ** Affects: util-linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1752876 Title: sfdisk: allow disabling boot flag on MBR partition table To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util-linux/+bug/1752876/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@Flames_in_Paradise (1) Well project homepage is better to be set to https://www.kde.org/applications/system/kdepartitionmanager/ Debian watch file can just track http://download.kde.org/stable/partitionmanager/ (2) Yeah, CHANGES file is not really updated. I just checked the last update was in 2010 by Volker Lanz and it wasn't touch since then. I guess it was git migration then. SVN commit 1337488 by stikonas: Fix detection of partitions' paths. Previously, partition number was added to device path. David, No, only the header of .mo files is good, the files itself are broken. Upstream (from kdebase) processui.po file contains: "Plural-Forms: nplurals=4; plural=(n==1 ? 0 : n%10==1 && n%100!=11 ? 1 : n" "%10>=2 && (n%100<10 || n%100>=20) ? 2 : 3);\n" #: ksysguardprocesslist.cpp:165 msgid "End Process..." msgid_plural "End Processes..." msgstr[0] "Nutraukti procesą..." msgstr[1] "Nutraukti procesus..." msgstr[2] "Nutraukti procesus..." msgstr[3] "Nutraukti procesus..." On the other hand, processui.mo file exported from Launchpad has: "Plural-Forms: nplurals=4; plural=(n==1 ? 0 : n%10==1 && n%100!=11 ? 1 : n" "%10>=2 && (n%100<10 || n%100>=20) ? 2 : 3);\n" #: ksysguardprocesslist.cpp:165 msgid "End Process..." msgid_plural "End Processes..." msgstr[0] "Nutraukti procesą..." msgstr[1] "Nutraukti procesus..." msgstr[2] "Nutraukti procesus..." The last plural form is missing even though the plural header is correct. And this happens for all plural messages, I've just taken this as an example. E.g. dolphin.mo has: msgctxt "@info" msgid "%1 item selected" msgid_plural "%1 items selected" msgstr[0] "Pažymėtas %1 objektas" msgstr[1] "Pažymėtas %1 objektas" msgstr[2] "Pažymėti %1 objektai" The last form is also missing. I've looked at this issue on Maverick. Plural form header is correct (4 plural forms) in *.mo files but for some reason the actual number of plural forms is still cut down to 3. This should be happening on Lucid too unless KDE S.C. 4.5 is installed from PPA which is why I have not noticed it at first. -- Plural translations are broken for Lithuanian language https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565294 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Данило, now it is of course too late but should KDE Lithuanian team move the really singular form to the msgstr[3] for KDE S.C. 4.5? That's why I support option (b) if it is feasible. E.g. Delete this file. (Trinti šį failą) Delete the following files. (Trinti šiuos failus) Stripping the 1st form would make the case n==1 clumsy. Stripping the second case would make cases n==23, 31, etc clumsy. So stripping either of them is at the best choosing the lesser evil. Such strings were the main reason why KDE S.C. Lithuanian translators did such intrusive change. There are a lot of such strings in KDE S.C. and other projects and it is not possible to fix them without ugly hacks in the source by adding 2 strings and if-else statements. -- Plural translations are broken for Lithuanian language https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565294 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 565294] Re: Plural translations are broken for Lithuanian language
It was done in KDE S.C. since version 4.4. KDE S.C. Lithuanian translation now use: "Plural-Forms: nplurals=4; plural=(n==1 ? 0 : n%10==1 && n%100!=11 ? 1 : n%" "10>=2 && (n%100<10 || n%100>=20) ? 2 : 3);\n" instead of "Plural-Forms: nplurals=3; plural=(n%10==1 && n%100!=11 ? 0 : n%10>=2 && (n%" "100<10 || n%100>=20) ? 1 : 2);\n" GNOME, Debian, Mozilla, Translation project, etc are still using 3 plural forms and I haven't heard about any plans to change this.
