No such luck. Escape does nothing, even if I hammer it for a good while. I
did get text mode after I blindly entered my password, though, for a couple
of seconds until I entered X.

[Bug 2072153] Re: LUKS/Cryptsetup shows blank screen on boot in noble

2024-07-05 Thread Håvard H . Garnes
I'm using the internal screen, and I have no other screens attached. The
internal screen is a 3840x2160 resolution one.

No change if I set plymouth.use-simpledrm.

It could be noted, though, that when I reboot from a working state, I
see the splash screen on shutdown after X is shut down before the
machine boots. That is, there is something that works once X has run
proper. Moreover, if I remove "quiet" from the boot line (and enter my
password blindly), after a while the screen blinks black" and I see the
boot messages in high resolution (i.e. small font) for half a second on
the screen right before I get dumped into the X login screen.

[Bug 2072153] [NEW] LUKS/Cryptsetup shows blank screen on boot in noble

2024-07-04 Thread Håvard H . Garnes
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 23.10 to 24.04, I get a blank screen at boot
instead of the password prompt. I can enter my password blindly and boot
into X as usual, but nothing I have tried for getting the password
prompt has worked.

I'm on a Thinkpad T580, with an NVIDIA GeForce MX150. I'm on the nvidia
driver version 555.52.04 from the graphics drivers ppa.

I have tried various combinations of:
- not having driver version 555 installed (It was left at the old version on
upgrade
- modding grub to say nosplash, gfxmode=auto or gfxmode=text or gfxmode=wxh
(all gave me text, but also a kernel panic about synaptics drivers)
- modding grub to say nomodeset, and/or nvidia.modeset=0

** Affects: plymouth (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1857410] Re: Install Anti-Malware by default for system scanning

Could you add “Avoid entering your password to grant higher levels of
permission to programs without being aware of having started those
programs.” to the “An application is attempting to perform an action
that requires privileges. Authentication is required to perform this
action.” pop up message.

Malware could trick a user into entering their admin password in order
to gain higher privileges.

[Bug 1857410] Re: Install Anti-Malware by default for system scanning

2024-06-30 Thread Clinton H
If a user chooses to use a deb file to install software, Linux could
prompt the user for the hash value. This would ensure the file didn’t
get corrupted while downloading.

The attacker that embedded malware in Linux Mint, created a hash value
for the iso file. Verifying the hash would not have protected users.

There could be a database of hash values for non repository software. If
a user downloads a deb file, linux could use the hash value from the
database to verify the download is safe. If the downloaded software is
not found in the database, a user could press a button to request the
software and hash value be added. Linux security team developers could
check the software and add the legitimate hash value to the database.
This could help protect inexperienced Linux users.

A user could install non malicious software from the repository or a deb
file, but malware could be delivered through software updates. Some
software developers might not be trustworthy or they might get hacked.
Malicious code might be obvious in open source software, but security
flaws are like a back door and are more difficult to discover.

Could you add reverse shell detection and automatically block remote
connections? There could be a firewall section in the settings app that
would allow a user to override the blocked remote connection. There
could be a warning about the danger of allowing the connection because
it can’t be determined if there is malicious intent.

this Dolphin was not updating the view!!!
After removing the PAPERBIN shortcut on my desktop (i put it in Paperbins ;-) )
Dolphin is working like normal and view is updated!

As i am no expert to fix this problem or look at it its up to the
professionals. In my case it was a "simple shortcut" like i was used to

[Bug 2065234] Re: can't unlock and xfce4-screensaver-dialog segfaults if weston running

2024-05-08 Thread Jonathan H N Chin
I discovered that invoking weston as `weston --socket=something`
prevents the segfaults.

But perhaps there should be some code in the screensaver to detect this
problem and prevent the crash?

[Bug 2065234] [NEW] can't unlock and xfce4-screensaver-dialog segfaults if weston running

2024-05-08 Thread Jonathan H N Chin
Public bug reported:

laptop running xubuntu 22.04.4, logged into xubuntu session.

xfce4-screensaver 4.16.0-1
weston 9.0.0-4ubuntu1
firefox 125.0.3-1 (snap)

Run firefox.
In terminal: tail -f /var/log/syslog
In another terminal: weston
Lock the screen by hotkey calling: xflock4

Press key to bring up dialog but only black shows - can see backlight
periodically turning on/off and flashes of cursor when pressing keys.

Ctrl-Alt-F1; login; pkill weston; Alt-F7 back to locked session.

Now unlocking works normally again.
However, after unlocking, many firefox empty windows have been created.

/var/log/syslog shows new output:

[Bug 2056543] Re: Ubuntu 24.04 breaking gnome, showing "Oops.." requesting logout, and several instabilities when using GDM3 instead of Waylan after upgrading from 22.04 to 24.04

2024-03-11 Thread Carlos H Simoes
Yes.

I reproduced it exactly here to validate, when trying to close an APP by
clicking on the dock, when closing, the session was immediately logged
out.

A few days ago, I tried to disable Waylan, but the problems seem to
recur more often. But it happens anyway.

In some cases, for example, if you try to just block the current
session, it also generates behavior.

Below is the result of journalctl attached to this.

Thanks!

[Bug 1955109] Re: boot menu not appearing after manual install of jellyfish daily build alongside other OS

2022-02-12 Thread Bob H
The installation text creates the impression that jellyfish will install
alongside pre-existing operating systems.
Perhaps there should be a warning that it is a little more complicated in
practice.

[Bug 1959508] Re: enable BMFF support in exiv2

2022-02-10 Thread David H

>

I just looked at
https://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/e/exiv2/exiv2_0.27.5-1.debian.tar.xz
and I don't think it enables BMFF at build time, so I don't think this will
enable CR3 support:

$ grep ENABLE debian/rules
-DEXIV2_ENABLE_NLS=ON \
-DEXIV2_ENABLE_VIDEO=ON \
-DEXIV2_ENABLE_WEBREADY=ON \

> Could you ask exiv2 why they don't enable the feature by default?
>

BMFF support was not enabled by default in 0.27-5 out of an abundance of
caution at the time that this feature was being worked on and possible
legal implications were being investigated. The situation has clarified
since then and it will be enabled by default in future Exiv2 versions.
See the discussion at
https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2/issues/1679

[Bug 1960011] Re: Laptop internal display random noise, external monitor works. Rolling back to 5.11.0-46-generic works, kernels 5.13.0-27-generic and linux-image-5.13.0-28-generic does not work

2022-02-09 Thread h-tech
That solved the issue i am currently running 5.13.0-28-generic with no
random noise on the laptop screen.

Regarding the package i installed, should i uninstall it so it doesn't cause
issues in the future or will a future update replace it? (I will surely forget
about this custom install in a month)

Do i mark this as resolved or is there some other procedure?

[Bug 1960159] [NEW] 5.13 amdgpu, random pixel screen

2022-02-06 Thread Markus H
Public bug reported:

Hi, I have a Laptop with a Ryzen 5500U, running Linux Mint 20.3. To make
use of the graphics driver, I update the kernel from 5.4 to 5.13. The
computer is booting up, the LM splash screen apprears and then the
screen gets funky with a random assignment of pixels. It seems each
pixel gets a random assigned color (white, red, blue, green?, black).
The pixels change color roughly every 200-500 ms. This happens with
5.13.0-28 and 5.13.0-23. The laptop is not responding to anything.

Using 5.11.22 works without any flaws. AMD gpu drivers are installed correctly.

[Bug 1955109] Re: boot menu not appearing after manual install of jellyfish daily build alongside other OS

2022-02-05 Thread Bob H
@ Norbert (nrbrtx)
to overcome this bug, until some sort of fix is applied by the developers:

while logged into Jammy Jellyfish navigate to /etc/default/grub
and add the following line and save:

GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false

After the edit, in the console, run:

sudo update-grub

The grub menu will be set up and other operating systems on the device
will be displayed next time the system starts.

(Unfortunately this is viewed as a security problem, which has yet to be
addressed.)

Rolling back to 5.11.0-46-generic works

Both kernels below causes he same issue
5.13.0-27-generic
5.13.0-28-generic

First i thought it was due to installing CUDA. But removing CUDA and NVIDIA
drivers didn't work.
Only switching kernels did.

[Bug 1959508] [NEW] Proposal to include exiv2 0.27.5 in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

2022-01-30 Thread David H
Public bug reported:

On https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jammy/+source/exiv2 I see that
Ubuntu 22.04 currently includes exiv2 0.27.3

Exiv2 v0.27.5 includes support for Canon *.CR3 image files. The CR3 file
format has been the Canon camera-raw file format since mid 2018, and is
probably one of the most common raw image file formats today.
Applications such as darktable, amongst others, use exiv2 to extract
image metadata, thumbnails and previews, and can only open CR3 files
when linked with exiv2 0.27.5 or later.

Note that exiv2 0.27.5 needs to be built with -DEXIV2_ENABLE_BMFF=On to
enable *.CR3 support.

Would it be possible to get Exiv2 v0.27.5 with BMFF support enabled
included in Ubuntu 22.04?

Note that a similar request exists for Debian in

[Bug 1955551] [NEW] Software updater crashes when you deselect some some checkboxes from a list of software to update

2021-12-22 Thread Sam H
Public bug reported:

When presented with list of software (components) to be updated I need
to deselect some of them by clicking on check boxes and deselecting
them. This normally causes the app to be unresponsive (can not click on
"Install Now" button) and then crashes. It then present an error report
which I used at least 100 times reporting this crash.

  card, several ssd's

manual install of Kubuntu Jellyfish to a partition on ssd alongside
  Kubuntu Focal LTS

I am testing an installation of Kubuntu Jellyfish daily build alongside
Kubuntu Focal 20.04.3
Usually this proceeds without a problem.

Since the 16th Dec daily build of Jammy, the boot menu does not appear
any more after installation, also booting ignores Kubuntu Focal and
  proceeds directly to Kubuntu 22.04.

I recovered the boot menu on this PC by running boot-restore from an iso
of Kubuntu Focal both Focal and Jelly fish are then available from the
  restored boot menu.

This bug appears in Kubuntu Jammy after a manual install directly to the
  computer's ssd.

I'm not an expert at bug reporting, so if this report is incorrectly set out
or if more info is needed I'm happy to follow instructions.
I'll keep an eye on this thread.
I think the problem is with the Jammy iso, not Focal.

+
+ A boot menu is not created and any other operating systems on the device
become invisible to the user.
+ As this is a development version this could be a temporary state of affairs.
+ At the very least the user needs to know what will happen and to know this
before beginning the installation process.

[Bug 1955109] Re: boot menu not appearing after manual install of jellyfish daily build

2021-12-19 Thread Bob H
There is a workaround here but I'm pretty sure a newcomer to Ubuntu wouldn't be
able to discover it.
To them this would appear to be an insurmountable problem and they could get
into difficulties as any other OS present alongside on their device would
apparently have 'disappeared'.
Perhaps the developers already have a method and plan to make this issue more
user friendly?

2021-11-24 Thread Bob H
@ aigreeny todays Xubuntu was released about five hours before the others, I'm
guessing the corrections that were made later to the other flavours hadn't been
applied that early.
I tested the Xubuntu daily almost as it was released and got a fail too.
I would imagine that, all being well, tomorrows dailies will all pass rock
solid.
...and status will be 'fix released'.

Many thanks to those who worked towards a solution.

[Bug 1945367] Re: [nvidia] Graphics freeze

2021-11-22 Thread j l h
End off this bug !!!
I have installed nvidia-driver-470 tested and updated by ubuntu, and the bug
disappear !!
I note that the version of the nvidia driver passed from 470.62 to 470.82, is
it the reason why it works now ? i don't know.
Thanks to the developer who have done the necessary :-)
Have a good day.

[Bug 1951399] Re: Ubuntu, Budgie, Kubuntu, Kylin, MATE, Xubuntu: jammy daily fails to install

2021-11-20 Thread Bob H
Because this bug prevents completion of Jammy Jellyfish installation it
seems testing is halted for the time being until the issue is addressed.

As this situation arose on 8-11-2021 and it seems to have had no
attention since then I am guessing the developers consider this to be a
matter of little or no importance at this time.

I suspect that they are aware of what is holding things up and will
return the daily-live releases to a state where testing can resume when
they are ready.

I also reason that until then bug reports for Jammy will be of no value.

I will watch the proceedings with interest and wait until my efforts can
be of some use.

what is a masterbug?
is it about to take over the universe and beyond?
do we need to achieve herd immunity?

should this be asked as a question?

2021-11-19 Thread Bob H
Ubuntu Desktop amd64 fails to install on my system. Throws up 'Installer
Crashed' error message during slideshow.

Manual partitioned install to solid state drive, nvidia so using safe
graphics and third party software,

This problem first appeared in Jammy Jellyfish on 08-11-2021.

Before that date all was working fine. Daily checks had proceeded with
no problems.

Again I humbly suggest some change was introduced between 07-11-2021 and
08-11-2021 and is the cause of this problem.

[Bug 1950132] Re: Kubuntu jammy jellyfish daily test install crash

2021-11-18 Thread Bob H
On 2021-11-07 daily-live Kubuntu Jammy Jellyfish INSTALLED without
error.

On 2021-11-08 a change had occurred which created bug 1950132.
This change prevents/stops installation at the slideshow stage.

I'm not a programmer or developer but I humbly suggest that a comparison of the
changes from the 2021-11-07 version to the 2012-11-08 version might show where
the problem lies.

I think this is true for other flavours including Ubuntu itself.

I would do such a comparison myself and deal with it if I knew how but
my expertise is very limited..

[Bug 1951399] Re: xubuntu jammy daily fails to install

2021-11-18 Thread Bob H
Something similar to this occurred on a previous version of Kubuntu.
I was test installing Kubuntu and I think it was Impish Indri.
If I remember right the tool chain had just been installed and the problem was
in there somewhere.
I'm not a programmer or developer so I can't expand on that. I think tool chain
might have something to do with it.

My report on 2021-11-08 was the first instance of this bug, I had been
testing every day with no problem until then. I posted at launchpad as
soon as it cropped up. My report was bug 1950132.

I'm happy to engage in further testing if this is useful. I'll watch
this page.

[Bug 1842320] Re: Out of Memory on boot with 5.2.0 kernel

2021-11-08 Thread H
I had this issue as well, through ALL of the 5.x kernels. Tried everything
mentioned in the thread here, but nothing worked other than going to 4.15
kernel.
This gave me suspicions it was related to something with the UEFI handoff to
OS, so I looked for BIOS updates and sure enough there was one from earlier
this year. Updated to the latest BIOS from Intel, and everything boots fine
and working now.

[Bug 1811724] Re: libbd_mdraid.so.2: cannot open shared object file

2021-11-04 Thread David H. Brown
I encountered something very similar to this issue (maybe even this
issue?) when my docker containers could not start (using snap on Ubuntu
20.04.3 LTS under VirtualBox with a Windows 10 host). Similar to others,
`sudo apt install libblockdev-mdraid2` seems to have fixed it.

In case these log lines are useful context, they came from `sudo grep
fail /var/log/syslog` (just trying to filter out some of the noise and I
suspect that the devmapper/containerd/cni bits are not directly
related):

[Bug 1945367] [NEW] Xorg crash with Nvidia drivers after installation

2021-09-28 Thread j l h
Public bug reported:

i open a second bug report because i have already freeze problem after the
installation of nvidia drivers and reboot.
Freeze become generally when i am using firefox and visioning a video with
youtube.
I specify that since the last bug report, i re install ubuntu with official
.iso without other package non official.
To create the report, i have to connect to the PC from another one with ssh.
When i use ubuntu-bug, it is not possible to join nvidia-bug-report because the
application dont give me the hand to finish the report.
When i try to execute nvidia-bug-report, i have the same thing.

To use the PC, i have to use nouveau drivers and intel Xe GPU with poor
performances ...

Thanks for help.

2021-09-27 Thread Robin H. Johnson
Will new media be available w/ this fix in place?

I ask because running "dkms status" or any dkms command presently
triggers this bug for me, and the only way forward I can see to being
able to fix that system is new media w/ a patched kernel.

[Bug 1937897] Re: GPIO error logs in start and dmesg after update of kernel

2021-08-28 Thread Bob H
These two error messages display when booting and closing live disk
media using 'safe graphics'

gpio gpiochip: (gpio_aaeon): tried to insert a GPIO chip with zero lines
gpiochip_add_data_with_key: GPIOs 0..-1 (gpio_aaeon) failed to register, -22

they do not seem to upset the processes of the media

this occurs with Kubunt Impish daily builds and also with Kubuntu 2004.3
daily build

[Bug 1937115] Re: Unable to boot/install Impish daily in UEFI boot mode

2021-08-21 Thread Bob H
recently... while booting the ISO image for the Impish live build
the following error lines are displayed:

[ 1.501001] gpio gpiochip: (gpio_aaeon): tried to insert a GPIO chip with
zero lines
[ 1.501013] gpiochip_add_data_with_key: GPIOs O..-1 (gpio_aaeon) failed to
register. -22
[ 0.197133] gpio gpiochip: (gpio_aaeon): tried to insert a GPIO chip with
zero lines
[ 0.197161] gpiochip_add_data_with_key: GPIOs O..-1 (gpio_aaeon) failed to
register. -22

After a pause the iso then continues to boot and a successful
installation proceeds without any signs of further error.

this first occurred at 20210820 (since fix released)

I have an own build PC with nVidia graphics and use 'safe graphics' to boot the
iso
Prior to this I was not experiencing the problems that had been occurring with
Dell laptops.

[Bug 1871797] Re: syntax error in desktop file

2021-08-14 Thread Bayu Aditya H.
So, when the fix applied to the release? This is more than 4 months
since the fix available.

I remember, maybe a month ago, I manually edit
"/usr/share/applications/screensavers/glitchpeg.desktop" to remove the
newline, but for some reason, the file is overwritten to the old one
that broken, probably during "apt upgrade".

[Bug 1930121] Re: package ubuntu-advantage-tools 27.0.2~18.04.1 - ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'uaclient'

2021-08-11 Thread H Geerts
This bug can also be triggered if the user has a virtual python env
active. The post install script uses the python version from the callers
environment instead of the system version for which ubuntu-advantage-
tools was installed. I think it would be safe to hardcode the python bin
path in the post install script since it is built for that version only.

[Bug 1664006] Re: I wish window control buttons scaled in size with window title font size

2021-08-03 Thread Dave H
Hi Norbert,
The situation still exists. I'm running Ubuntu-Mate 20.04.02 fully updated on a
Dell Inspiron 7995 with NVIDIA GTX 960m graphics . The window control buttons
are a fixed size in relation to the Window title font size. See the attached
screen shot. If you increase or decrease the window title font size the window
control buttons remain fixed.
