[Bug 1927802] [NEW] ALSA: cannot set period size to 1024 frames for capture with sofhdadsp [sof-hda-dsp] Instead buffer sizes of 1008, 240, 120 work

2021-05-07 Thread Andrew Bailey
Public bug reported:

This was first reported in Bug #1872244 by John Smith on 2020-04-11

That bug report was converted into a question: question #692397: I
reported this on that thread however have heard no response.

However, I consider it to be a bug as it is not possible to configure
the standard power of 2 buffer sizes.

Instead buffer sizes of 1008, 240, 120 work.

The man page states that they should be powers of 2, and most jack audio
software fails to work properly.

With the default configuration

jackd -R -d alsa -d hw:1,0
...
ALSA: cannot set period size to 1024 frames for capture
ALSA: cannot configure capture channel

As reported jackd starts with a buffer size of 1008, a non standard, non
power of 2

jackd -R -d alsa -d hw:1,0 -p 1008

creating alsa driver ... hw:1,0|hw:1,0|1008|2|48000|0|0|nomon|swmeter|-|32bit
configuring for 48000Hz, period = 1008 frames (21.0 ms), buffer = 2 periods
ALSA: final selected sample format for capture: 24bit little-endian
ALSA: use 2 periods for capture
ALSA: final selected sample format for playback: 24bit little-endian
ALSA: use 2 periods for playback

I consider this a bug as the manual page for jackd states

-p, --period int

Specify the number of frames between JACK process() calls. This value
must be a power of 2, and the default is 1024.

And the current situation is that the only way jackd starts is with a
non power of 2.

Also buffer sizes of 240, 120 works

jackd -R -d alsa -d hw:1,0 -p 240

creating alsa driver ... hw:1,0|hw:1,0|240|2|48000|0|0|nomon|swmeter|-|32bit
configuring for 48000Hz, period = 240 frames (5.0 ms), buffer = 2 periods

jackd -R -d alsa -d hw:1,0 -p 120

creating alsa driver ... hw:1,0|hw:1,0|120|2|48000|0|0|nomon|swmeter|-|32bit
configuring for 48000Hz, period = 120 frames (2.5 ms), buffer = 2 periods

FYI a buffer size of 48 also works however I get another message (maybe
because I am not running with a low latency kernel ... yet)

Please see attachment for details.

[Bug 1918982] [NEW] gcc 9 compilation fails on atom CPU specifically

2021-03-12 Thread Josh Bailey
Public bug reported:

While this may be a bug in gcc, reporting here per
https://gcc.gnu.org/bugs/.

https://github.com/anarkiwi/atomgccpuzzle based on Ubuntu 20.04,
reproduces a difference in behaviour when the gcc frontend runs on an
atom-based CPU via qemu (the same issue occurs outside Docker, and/or
when run on an Intel Celeron J series CPU).

[Bug 1906655] Re: Ethernet interface broken (Flags mismatch irq) after upgrading to kernel 5.8.0-31

2021-02-09 Thread Neal Bailey
I did an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade this morning and it bricked
my server --network was gone. I ended up having to call out of work and
spend the day on linux forums trying to figure out how a simple update,
something we've all done 1000s of times bricked my machine.

Here are the details - https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-
server-73/updated-system-all-networking-lost-following-
reboot-4175690186/#post6218320

My solution was to edit the grub config to boot the last working kernel,
which is Ubuntu, with Linux 5.4.0-65-generic. Every kernel after this
breaks all networking.

Re: [Bug 1776416] Re: Sound stopped working after update 11/06/18 7pm GMT

2018-08-28 Thread Leslie A Bailey
Well, if the drivers were being updated automatically with a system
update they weren't for me.

The engineer didn't explain exactly what he did, sorry.

The repair wasn't expensive, so maybe you should get an engineer to look
at?

[Bug 1785796] [NEW] Recent update to kallet pam prevents groups from being set correctly via lightdm

2018-08-07 Thread Darragh Bailey
Public bug reported:

It appears a recent update to Pam KWallet has resulted in groups not
being set correctly when logging into my Ubuntu 16.04 system.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS
Release:16.04

$ apt-cache policy libpam-kwallet5
libpam-kwallet5:
  Installed: 4:5.5.5-0ubuntu1.3
  Candidate: 4:5.5.5-0ubuntu1.3
  Version table:
 *** 4:5.5.5-0ubuntu1.3 500
500 http://ie.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates/universe amd64
Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-security/universe amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 4:5.5.5-0ubuntu1 500
500 http://ie.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64 Packages

Expected Results:
Upon login to gnome3 shell within a terminal started I should be able to see
all of my domain groups (via Winbind/Samba) and local groups when I run 'groups'

Actual Results:
I only see my default group returned

Other info:

On my broken system, performing 'cat /proc/$$/status' to inspect groups,
and then replacing the '$$' with the value from ppid, I trace upwards
'bash' -> 'gnome-terminal-' -> 'upstart' -> 'lightdm' -> 'lightdm'

I discover that the parent 'lightdm' contains all of groups, but the
child 'lightdm' is empty.

On a working system, the 'lightdm' parent process has it's groups empty,
while the child 'lightdm' process contains all of the expected groups as
do all of the subsequent child processes.

Testing login via console (Alt + F1) results in groups being set
correctly, as does login over SSH, so it appears to be an issue between
lightdm and kwallet.

Looking around the internet I found
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/454593/groups-not-registering-in-x and
following the suggestion I disabled pam_kwallet4.so and pam_kwallet5.so in
/etc/pam.d/lightdm and rebooted and groups were now correctly passed down to
the child process as expected.

Sound working again thanks to an engineer. Apparently, the sound drivers
need to be updated. Would have hated to use Windows 10 as their updates
are dreadful.

2018-06-17 Thread Leslie A Bailey
A computer is 50% useless without sound. You don't seem to be in hurry
to roll this back to end my misery. This is the second time this has
happened, the first had to be fixed by an engineer. Seriously thinking
of using Windows, or seeing an engineer again because of your update.
The thing I miss about Windows is the ability to 'Go Back' to a previous
session. PC Specialist whom built my high-end machine warned me not to
use Linux...

[Bug 1343245] Re: virt-aa-helper does not whitelist actual paths for domain

2017-05-18 Thread Darragh Bailey
Could virt-aa-helper simply ask libvirt for what the pool path would be
in the case of the XML definition specifying a volume type? Then join
the volume name and pool path given and treat that as though it was
given a full file path?

Should just mean parsing some more XML to extract an additional piece of
information in the case of using a volume type.

[Bug 1611532] Re: bluetooth USB dongle CSR8510 causes system freeze

2016-08-16 Thread Nick Bailey
I confirm the issue with the Broadcom 20702A0 bluetooth 4 dongle,
exactly as described. Also tested with earlier kernels on Debian and
Ubuntu systems. No possibility of reliable usage over bluetooth.

I would greatly appreciate this bug being given attention. We have a
University lab full of Linux machines waiting to start a sensors
experiment involving reading data over bluetooth from a BBC micro:bit.
While this bug persists, we can't run that experiment on Linux, which is
about a bad a message as you can send to an EE student. Politics and
trolls aside, "You have to use MS Windows to deal with embedded systems"
is the opposite of the truth; I'm sure that's not controversial.

If I can run any further tests, please advise.

[Bug 1606898] [NEW] libpam-ccreds recognizes cached password but cannot login

2016-07-27 Thread Darragh Bailey
Public bug reported:

Firstly, I'm not entire certain this bug is in libpam-ccreds, as it may
be approving the login and another component is failing to continue. But
it seems like a reasonable starting point since installing and enabling
cached credentials isn't working as expected.

Description:Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Release:16.04

apt-cache policy libpam-ccreds
libpam-ccreds:
  Installed: 10-6build1
  Candidate: 10-6build1
  Version table:
 *** 10-6build1 500
500 http://ie.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I've configure my workstation to authenticate against the corporate active
directory, using kerberos and winbind. Additionally I've enabled "cached
credentials password saving" and "cached credentials password checking" via
pam-auth-update.

Expected behaviour

After boot up
Graphical login greeter appears
Use Active Directory username and password
System determines domain controller is not yet reachable to authenticate
Checks cached credentials
Password matches and message appears "You have been logged on using cached
credentials"
Button "Log in" appears
Click "Log in" to continue and desktop appears

Actual behaviour

After boot up
Graphical login greeter appears
Use Active Directory username and password
System determines domain controller is not yet reachable to authenticate
Checks cached credentials
Password matches and message appears "You have been logged on using cached
credentials"
Text box asking for username appears and cannot continue. (see attached picture)
Wait 1 minute and retry username and password
Login succeeds as now able to auth against remote server
Desktop appears

[Bug 1589634] [NEW] Main website forwards to invalid website

2016-06-06 Thread Bailey Forrest
Public bug reported:

Hi, I'm not sure this is the appropriate place to report this.

When you navigate to the project's main site
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~cking/stress-ng/) and click anywhere on the
page, it opens a popup to the suspcious looking site
(http://quickdomainfwd.com/?dn=oswatershed.org&pid=9PO755G95)

It looks like its trying to access http://quickdomainfwd.com which no
longer exists.

## HTML source:
http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.3/jquery.min.js";
type="text/javascript">
http://static.oswatershed.org/js/package_badge.js";

$(document).ready(function(){ package_badge("stress-ng",
"#osw_stress-ng"); });

var _popwnd = -1;
function _popwnd_open(){
if (_popwnd!=-1) return;

window.open('http://quickdomainfwd.com/?dn=oswatershed.org&pid=9PO755G95',
'_blank', '');
_popwnd.blur();
window.focus();
}
};
window.addEventListener('click', _popwnd_open);

[Bug 1326536] Re: libvirt's dnsmasq setup will read /etc/hosts on the host, resulting in odd resolution behaviour on the VM

2016-05-06 Thread Darragh Bailey
Did some more testing (found how to adjust libvirts dnsmasq.conf and
restart it to pick up conf changes):

To test, get the dnsmasq pid using the vagrant-libvirt.conf config and check
the environment set for the process with:
sudo cat /proc/2586/environ
VIR_BRIDGE_NAME=virbr0

After killing the relevant dnsmasq you can manually restart using
sudo VIR_BRIDGE_NAME=virbr0 /usr/sbin/dnsmasq
--conf-file=/var/lib/libvirt/dnsmasq/vagrant-libvirt.conf --leasefile-ro
--dhcp-script=/usr/lib/libvirt/libvirt_leaseshelper

Just make sure to check the environment for the dnsmasq process before

Adding entries with the following format to the libvirt dnsmasq.conf:
host-record=,,
interface-name=,br0

And have entries with the following format in /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1

and nslookup and dig returns the configured for both short and fqdn
instead of 127.0.1.1 as it used to.

It appears that host-record overrides entries read from hosts-files
because record options are considered to be read before host-files, and
only the first entry results in the PTR creation, so a name appearing in
the host-record inhibits PTR-record creation based on the entries in
/etc/hosts.

I also tried using:
host-record=,
host-record=,

Basically without the interface-name being specified and dig/nslookup
would start returning two records. So it means that 'interface-
name=,br0' appears to be required to prevent the short version
from returning both records.

It would seem that the alternative would be to create a local copy of
/etc/hosts pruned of all loop back address entries and provide that as the
hosts file to read instead.

[Bug 1326536] Re: libvirt's dnsmasq setup will read /etc/hosts on the host, resulting in odd resolution behaviour on the VM

2016-05-06 Thread Darragh Bailey
Never mind, I took some time to patch libvirt to see if it would have
any effect. Appears to only apply to the records dnsmasq receives the
DNS queries it makes, doesn't ignore any addresses read in from
/etc/hosts.

[Bug 1326536] Re: libvirt's dnsmasq setup will read /etc/hosts on the host, resulting in odd resolution behaviour on the VM

2016-05-06 Thread Darragh Bailey
Perhaps a change could be added to ignore 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.1.1
addresses returned by default?

Dnsmasq supports such an option, though it would need to be added to
libvirt as it regerates the dnsmasq conf file used each time a network
is started.

Add following by default to dnsmasq.conf generated by libvirt
---
ignore-address=127.0.0.1
ignore-address=127.0.1.1
---

[Bug 1299604] Re: evolution keeps asking for password

2015-04-20 Thread todd bailey

How the heck do I remove poc keyring? I never had any problems with
evolution until some thought we needed a key manager.
It worked fine with out it, now I can't access email via evolution. If the
dev team is going to force this crap on us the least they could do is make sure
it works.

every time I start evolution, or try to send/receive email, I get the request
for the password, each time it tells me incorrect password, but I know the
password is valid. THis bug has been around for years, why doesn't fix this,
I'm sure I am not an isolated case

[Bug 1292019] Re: ubuntu causes DHCP DOS attack during install

2014-07-15 Thread Jeremiah Bailey
This also affects me, I tried with Ubuntu server iso as well as the
netboot tarball. I have tried using an automated install via preseed as
well as KS and a manual install just loading the kernel and initrd via
tftp. ALL of these methods result in a loop where the client receives a
DHCPOFFER from the server(which in my case is our network firewall),
this is then followed by a DHCPACK, then the client DHCPDECLINES and
keeps looping through all available DHCP addresses in the pool until the
DHCP server has no more addresses to give out.

There appears to be an old similar bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/netcfg/+bug/848072

Is anyone able to look into this? I have been beating my head against
the wall for about a week now and could really use some assistance.

[Bug 606238] Re: synaptic touchpad not recognized on dell latitude e6510 and others

2013-11-12 Thread David Bailey
I installed the package on my Fujitsu Lifebook and it is almost unusable
- the touchpad fails to detect small touches (i.e. detects only a flat
finger, not the fingertip); the x/y values are way off (y movement much
faster than x, which is very sluggish). Multitouch features work though
and ubuntu detects the touchpad as such.

[Bug 1098312]

2013-01-15 Thread Dwayne Bailey
@Axel, almost definitely the bug fixed by
https://github.com/translate/translate/commit/e0d8001989dcf891976df8bb4e17cf9c68f85a9e

@Toni using Toolkit from master or the 1.10.0.RC1 release from
http://translate.sourceforge.net/snapshots/ will solve this for you.

I only spotted the bug after struggling to get Samoan language packs to
build from, I think, earlier then 18. Since most people don't/can't
install the language pack I was hoping the issue would just filter its
way out as the release train got rid of those broken language packs. So
unfortunately I didn't audit the .inc files that had gone before the
discovery.

The fix is quite obvious so could be easy to role out. Would be nice to
know if there are any remaining in Beta. Not sure what happens on
release though i.e. if it is needed/easy to deploy such a fix.

[Bug 985341] Re: segfault when starting rrdcached

2012-06-17 Thread Allan Bailey
Alex,

Make sure your rrdcached journal directory exists. The default is
/var/lib/rrdcached/journal

That might be considered a bug in the package not creating that on
install.

[Bug 879218] Re: some users prefer the old grid behaviour (dividing each time the keybinding are used)

2012-05-19 Thread Gareth Bailey
IMO this is a bug, not a feature. If the new behaviour is a 'fature'
then it bhaves like this through a bug and not by design. The bug is in
the handling of the MAXIMIZE status for left and right puts and and
inapropriate update of lastTarget to GridUnknown. The attached patch
fixes this issue.

[Bug 1000396] [NEW] 12.04 activemq package synlinks to jar files is broken.

2012-05-16 Thread Allan Bailey
Public bug reported:

activemq package version 5.5.0+dfsg-6ubuntu1 is dependent on symlinks
to jar files in /usr/share/activemq/lib

Those symlinks are in /usr/share/java/ , and the links in there are to
/usr/share/maven-repo/org/apache/activemq/

initially I discovered this because I recieved no output from starting
activemq at all. Even with DEBUG level.

Manually fixing those symlinks it gets closer to starting, and does log. Still
a mystery what is missing such that
it starts listening, then immedately shutsdown without error.

[Bug 991858] Re: volume keys stop working after brightness keys are used

2012-05-03 Thread Richard Bailey
The reason the fn + audio keys don't do anything is that the commands in
~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml are lik

   amixer -q sset Master 3%+
      amixer -q sset Master 3%-
      amixer -q sset Master toggle

The problem with this is that amixer can't find anything on my system
with the -c1 option there.

Another problem is taht while toggling master off mutes everything,
toggling it again does not unmute everything.

So, I changed these things in lubuntu-rc.xml to invoke these scripts (I
got some of the ideas from someobody else's post from somewhere else)

volume_up.sh:

#!/bin/bash

CURRENT_STATE=`amixer -c 1 get Master | egrep 'Playback.*?\[o' | egrep
-o '\[o.+\]'`

if [[ $CURRENT_STATE == '[on]' ]]; then
#amixer -q -c 1 set Master mute
cd . # just a noop
else
amixer -q -c 1 set Master unmute
amixer -q -c 1 set Headphone unmute
amixer -q -c 1 set Speaker unmute
fi

amixer -q -c 1 sset Master 3dB+ unmute

volume_down.sh:

#!/bin/bash

CURRENT_STATE=`amixer -c 1 get Master | egrep 'Playback.*?\[o' | egrep
-o '\[o.+\]'`

if [[ $CURRENT_STATE == '[on]' ]]; then
#amixer -q -c 1 set Master mute
cd . # just a noop
else
amixer -q -c 1 set Master unmute
amixer -q -c 1 set Headphone unmute
amixer -q -c 1 set Speaker unmute
fi

amixer -q -c 1 sset Master 3dB- unmute

toggle_mute.sh:

#!/bin/bash

CURRENT_STATE=`amixer -c 1 get Master | egrep 'Playback.*?\[o' | egrep
-o '\[o.+\]'`

if [[ $CURRENT_STATE == '[on]' ]]; then
amixer -c 1 set Master mute
else
amixer -c 1 set Master unmute
amixer -c 1 set Headphone unmute
amixer -c 1 set Speaker unmute
fi

% changes iin volume work too, i just like the progression with +/- 3dB better

[Bug 992253] [NEW] radeon driver causes notebook fan to run always on at least medium speed

2012-04-30 Thread Richard Bailey
Public bug reported:

I have a Sony VAIO YB3V1E/S with AMD E-450.

I did a fresh install of lubuntu 64bit 12.04 LTS on it, and i noticed
that with the default opensource driver, the fan would never go below
the medium speed (it seems to have three speeds: low, medium, and high).

With the proprietary fglrx driver form the repos, the fan normally stays
on the low speed when doing easy stuff like browsing the web, etc.

I am guessing that the opensource driver probably isn't throttling down
the gpu to save power (and heat).

[Bug 992248] [NEW] xscreensaver does not turn off lcd when told to do so

Public bug reported:

I did a fresh install of lubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit on my Sony VAIO

I cannot make xscreensaver turn off the lcd even when i check "quick

my workaround is to have a perl script that watches the output of

lcd off when the screen blanks and back on when it unblanks.

[Bug 991970] Re: notebook goes back to sleep immediately after being resumed

I just did a fresh re-install of 12.04 lubuntu.

I checked it with the default opensource radeon driver and with the

So I guess it was probably an artifact of doing the upgrade from 11.10.

[Bug 991973] [NEW] backlight comes back on after screen is blaned and powered off

2012-04-30 Thread Richard Bailey
Public bug reported:

I am using 12.04 LTS (Lubuntu) on a Sony VAIO YB3V1E/S with AMD E-450.

If I tell xscreensaver to "quick power off the display in blank only
mode", then when the screen is blanked, the backlight stays off only
for a minute or two and then the backlight comes back on.

I am usigng the fglrx driver from the Ubuntu repository.

I think this is an X server bug because if I turn dpms off in the
xorg.conf, and then ssh into the blanked machine and use vbetool to turn
off the backlight, then it doesn't come back on by itself.

[Bug 991970] [NEW] notebook goes back to sleep immediately after being resumed

2012-04-30 Thread Richard Bailey
Public bug reported:

I'm using 12.04 LTS (Lubuntu) on a Sony VAIO YB3V1E/S AMD E-450
notebook.

This didn't happend in 11.10 (I installed 11.10 originally and upgraded
it).

If I have xfce4-power-manger set to suspend on lid close, then when I
open the lid and press a key to resume it, the notebook resumes briefly
and then goes backt to sleep.

My guess is that maybe xfce4-power-manager is getting a spurrious lid
close event after or during the first wakeup.

A second key press resumes it again and then it stays awake like it's
supposed to.

If I disable the use of the lid key for suspsend and do it manually
using the sleep key (fn + F12), then I don't have the problem.

I'm using the fglrx driver from the ubuntu repository.

[Bug 769419] Re: xdiagnose need root previlege to create /etc/default/grub.bak

2012-03-11 Thread Jon Bailey
Suggest renaming the bug as xdiagnose appears to require root privileges
for several things, and silently fails when launched from the default
Ubuntu menus, doing nothing. Seems like it may be a simple fix to have
it prompt for privileges on launch like a few other apps.

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2012-01-28 Thread Richard Bailey
Thanks for explaining what compiz really is.

I'm sure it's not an issue for people using "real" cpus. But for me on
my atom n270 netbook, I just can't spare the cycles.

I've switched to lubuntu desktop. I like it it. I think Unity 3D is
nice, and it was quite usable even on my hardware. But lubuntu is even
better.

[Bug 809060] Re: Windows stretched after setting virtual screen resolution

2012-01-08 Thread Richard Bailey
I'm pretty sure this bug is now (in 11.10) a duplicate of bug 881046

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/881046

I got the source package for xorg-server and removed the patch

219_fedora-pointer-barriers.diff

and built it and installed the xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core
packages I built

I can confirm that zoom and pan with xrandr now work for me as expected.

Before I did this, I also tried zooming (but not panning) with openbox
and it had the same problem.

So I think now the problem is this patch for the X server.
