[Bug 1766076] Re: USB over thunderbolt turns off every once in a while

2019-10-27 Thread Barney
I have a similar problem with a USB mouse, except in my case:
* Unplugging the mouse from the dock and replugging it fixes the problem.
* If I do nothing, the kernel appears to disconnect and reconnect the mouse
with a new device number, and it works again until the next hang.

Dell Precision 5530
Ubuntu 18.04 with latest HWE kernel (5.0.0-32-generic)
Latest 5530 BIOS (1.13.0)
Latest TB16 Firmware

I have dual-boot linux/windows and all PC / dock drivers are up to date
according to the Dell Command Update running in Windows 10.

dmesg from one disconnect / reconnect cycle - mouse froze around 60
seconds before this was logged

[Bug 1762472] Re: Can't accept password with return in login and lock screens

2018-04-14 Thread Barney
I have exactly the same problem.

* Clean install of Kubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" - Beta amd64 (20180404)
* Updated 14-April to latest updates from default package repositories

A little more information from my tests:

When I log out the cursor is initially in the password field. If I enter
my password and press return then I am logged back in.

However, if I log out, re-enter my password, tab through the available
fields until I am back at the password field and then hit return it no
longer works, and I need to use the mouse to log in again. It appears
that once I have tabbed out of the password field the return key no
longer works.

Yep - I'd seen the man page for xrandr, but xbacklight has no effect on
my hardware, which is why I used xrandr. I guess as far as the
workarounds go, just use whatever works for you. Cheers.

[Bug 1257766] Re: can not reduce brightness on HP ZBook

2014-01-18 Thread Barney
I have the same problem with a ZBook 14 with Intel/AMD graphics. My
current workaround is to use this script (which is actually what I use
on my desktop at night):

#!/bin/bash
xrandr -q | grep connected | awk '{print $1}' | while read d; do
  echo setting $d
  xrandr --output $d --brightness $1
done

Then just call set-brightness 0.6 for 60% etc. This doesn't bind to
the F9 / F10 buttons, but does the trick.

HTH

2012-04-05 Thread Hugh Barney
Ok so this bug impacts 8 of us so far - how long does it normally take
before anyone starts to look at these things.

I'm willing to help narrow down the root cause of this issue. Know my
way round a unix box, can shell script etc. Just dont know much about
ALSA and pulseaudio.

Meanwhile I've got my teenage daughter moaning about how how rubbish
linux is because they broke the sound on the last update.

Maybe its time to go back to Microsoft and install Windows 7. That
would be a shame. But a computer without sound these days is no fun at
all.

[Bug 964554] [NEW] [CA0106 - CA0106, playback] No sound at all

2012-03-25 Thread Hugh Barney
Public bug reported:

I am running 11.10. After performing an upgrade 2 days ago sounds no

Driver appears to be loaded ok. Sound is not muted. Reverted to

[Bug 896755] [NEW] python-software-properties should not depend on unattended-upgrades

2011-11-26 Thread Barney
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 11.10, attempting to remove the unattended-upgrades
package now forces me to remove python-software-properties, which in
turn wants to remove nearly 100 other packages which I still need.

I can see no reason for a normal package to depend on unattended-
upgrades: if anyone can supply one then I'll happily cancel this
request.

Yes, I know I can disable the unattended-upgrades without actually
removing the package, but that is not the point: packages should not
introduce unnecessary dependencies. In fact, this appears to be the only
package in the entire system which has a dependency on unattended-
upgrades:

# apt-rdepends -r unattended-upgrades
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
unattended-upgrades
  Reverse Depends: python-software-properties (0.81.10)

This is mentioned in the upstream bug report at http://bugs.debian.org
/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=447701, which appears to be over 4 years old
with no sign of action.

Further information:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 11.10
Release:11.10

$ apt-cache policy python-software-properties
python-software-properties:
  Installed: 0.81.13.1
  Candidate: 0.81.13.1
  Version table:

Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 0.81.10 0
500 http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64 Packages

What I expect to happen:

* removing unattended-upgrades should not remove any other packages

What actually happened:

* removing unattended-upgrades forces the removeal ov nearly 100 other
packages, which I still need.

[Bug 653530] [NEW] Screen/bootup problems after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10.

2010-10-02 Thread Barney Blackshaw
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After upgrading to 10.10 system would only boot to terminal mode.
Observed message 'failed to load screen'. Clean install of 10.10 allowed
full boot up but no nVidia hardware screen drivers were installed. Even
after using Synaptic to load nVidia v173 the system would not enable the
driver. Reverted back to 10.04 for now, which functions excellently.
Hope this helps you guys, keep up the good work! Barney

[Bug 567696] Re: [Radeon] [Lucid] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop

2010-05-30 Thread Barney Livingston
I too am seeing the very same symptoms, it's happened several times.
Machine is a Thinkpad T60 with Radeon Mobility X1400. I have KMS turned
off with a kernel option because it was causing a lot of problems.

Xorg.0.log contained [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck
in an infinite loop. and a stack trace implicating radeon_drv.so and
libglx.so. Next time it happens I'll make sure to keep a copy of the
stack trace.

Also syslog contains:
May 30 20:36:30 jarvis kernel: [60546.074216] Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown
reason b0 on CPU 0.
May 30 20:36:30 jarvis kernel: [60546.074222] You have some hardware problem,
likely on the PCI bus.
May 30 20:36:30 jarvis kernel: [60546.074225] Dazed and confused, but trying to
continue

Seems to happen after a day or so of use, possibly always after a
suspend/resume. Suddenly the pointer goes slow and no input works, not
even the likes of ctrl-alt-delete nor ctrl-alt-f1. Since GLX is
implicated I'm trying turning off compositing to see if it happens
again.

[Bug 271522] Re: simple-backup-config [sbackup] crashes (seg-fault)

2009-06-04 Thread Barney
I'm also having this problem in Jaunty, on a system that's been dist-
upgraded a couple of times. I was backing up with simple-backup in
Intrepid without trouble.

Trying to launch either simple-restore-gnome or simple-backup-config
results in a segmentation fault. It doesn't seem to make any difference
what's in the DVD drive.

I've attached transcripts of what happens when I try to launch either
program.

[Bug 292319] Re: SRU: nbd-client is killed during diskless client shutdown

2009-05-20 Thread Barney Livingston
That patch does

mkdir -p /lib/init/rw/sendsigs.omit.d/nbd-client

so it creates the intended destination of the pid file as a directory
causing the next line to fail.

[Bug 314545] Re: gnome-screensaver bad password timeout

2009-05-12 Thread Neal Barney
Here's is a snippet of the debug log. The full log was 18,000+ lines
before I encountered this problem. I grabbed the data about 4 to 5
minutes before attempting to unlock and all of the data afterwards. It
appears as if the screen lock happened at line 143. The (failed) unlock
request appears to start on line 196. Somewhere after that there is
also a successful unlock.

[Bug 314545] Re: gnome-screensaver bad password timeout

2009-01-14 Thread Neal Barney
One some occasions, I will switch to a console (Alt-F1) to attempt to
get something done while waiting for the screensaver to give me the
login dialog again. However, when I attempt to switch back (Alt-F7) It
only gives me a blank screen. So, it's possible that it is crashing
some of the time. In those cases I do 'init 3', force kill gdm X, and
then 'init 5'. If I don't switch to the console it eventually comes
back up though.

Really, this is the only issue I have with Ubuntu 8.04. It was minor
enough I waited 8 months to report it, mostly hoping that someone else
would and it would get fixed. But It's annoying enough that I finally
got motivated.

I have low expectations of it getting fixed though. It's too hard to
reproduce, which means it's going to be very difficult to narrow down
what is the root cause. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

[Bug 314545] [NEW] gnome-screensaver bad password timeout

2009-01-06 Thread Neal Barney
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I run Ubuntu 8.04 on my work computer. At work, when we step away from
our machines we are required to lock the screen, even if it is a simple
visit to the printer to get a print out. So I am locking and unlocking
my machine constantly throughout the day. Occasionally, I will mistype
my password and get the Incorrect password dialog after a few seconds.

However, I seem to have an issue where the timeout from a bad password
can be upward of 5 minutes. This is NOT after a given number of
consecutively bad passwords in a row. As an example:

8:00AM - I unlock my computer for the first time.
9:00AM - I lock my computer and go to a meeting.
9:15AM - I accidentally enter a bad password. Dialog times out after a few
seconds. I successfully enter the correct password.
11:00AM - I lock my screen and retrieve a print job from the printer.
11:01AM - I correctly enter my password and the screen unlocks.
12:00PM - I leave for lunch.
1:00PM - I accidentally enter a bad password and I have to wait a long, long
time (3-5+ minutes) before it gives me the dialog again.

The error message after it comes back up is not Invalid Password, but
Timeout expired. It seems to be random when it makes me wait a long
time on a bad password entry. It is not a huge deal but it is *highly*
annoying. The most common time for me to mis-type a password is when
I'm either in a big hurry or under stress due to a tight deadline. Both
of which are terrible situations to have to wait an unreasonable amount
of time for a bad password dialog to clear.

[Bug 131737] Re: network device (nVidia MCP55, forcedeth) stops sending packets

2008-10-01 Thread Barney Livingston
I can confirm that with the Intrepid 2.6.27-3-server kernel our server
which used to have this bug is still working after 14 days uptime and
several GB through each interface.

Yes. I'm seeing it on a Tyan Tomcat n3400b motherboard with two nVidia
MCP55 interfaces running Hardy.

[Bug 148900] Re: xt_CONNMARK target module is missing while xt_connmark match is available

2008-02-29 Thread Barney Livingston
linux-image-2.6.22-14-server (2.6.22-14.52) contains xt_CONNMARK.ko and
xt_NOTRACK.ko
linux-image-2.6.22-14-xen (2.6.22-14.52) does not.

Causes
iptables: No chain/target/match by that name
when trying to use connmark target.

I've created a custom xen kernel image with
CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_TARGET_CONNMARK=m
CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_TARGET_NOTRACK=m
and it works fine.
