[Bug 1069047] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2012-10-20 Thread Blempis
Public bug reported:

First of all, sorry that the given information is little bit
missleading, but I didn't have a change to report properly because
several reasons.

However, I still believe I can give you enough information what it the problem,
why it is crucial to fix it and what kind of users fill encounter this problem
so that you can give them a out of box user experience.

So, the main problem at hand is as follows:

It is not possible to install or upgrade on this system you collected
information from This includes upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04 and the
fresh installation of 12.04 , 12.04.1 and 12.10. (Well, perhaps one
could say that upgrade succeeded, but the new system got frozen.)
OpenSuse 12.2 installed succesfully but only the offered safe mode
worked.

One crucial thing to note is that this problem at hand is clearly
invisible to your current bug monitoring system/method. Launhcpad
involves more than 100 000 bugs so you have hard time even to follow it.
So, it seems that you don't get data when something goes terribly wrong
in upgrades and fresh installs, do you?

I do have a Android phone (Samsung Galaxy Gio) and I use it all the time
when connecting my desktop to internet. I don't have any other device
modem what so ever for that purpose. I don't know if this relevant from
the point of solving this issue but considered it is worth reporting
separately.

The problem is related to Nvidia Gtx 580. Installing Ubuntu 12.10 leads to
crash. It happens when I try to select language. Then the system reports about
pfipo goes into loop trying to recover but failing and it gives some magnified
parts of the previous installing screen. Those parts are not in any order. The
screen is not readable and mouse hangs.

Solution?

Installing nvidia packets by apt would be fine but that option is not
available. It is possible to get the livemode if the preferred language
is not selected rather than just pressing enter. However, live mode is
not working while mouse is not responsing nor is keybord.

How the heck did I manage to install Ubuntu 12.04 to this darn machine?!

Well, after that explanation you and I share the most well deserved
feeling of ashame.

First I changed back my old work horse Gts 250 and installed the 12.04. Then I
installed offered drivers for that and rebooted. After that (as I rememer it
right) I downloaded drivers suitable for Gtx 580 and shut down the machine.
Removed Gts 250 and replaced the Gtx 580 to the system and the system finally
booted as it should.

Your part of solution:

Make sure that the command line is available even before Ubuntu desktops
starts up. Also make sure that the system can find internet and use apt-
sources even if there is no modem available. Some of us use Androids.

That can be verified so Cinelerra-CV should be the first one of the set

[Bug 1034274] [NEW] Canon Pixma MP150 doesn't print text

2012-08-08 Thread Blempis
Public bug reported:

Canon Pixma MP150 worked with previous Ubuntu versions. Now it can print
image files but a single page document from Libre Office was incomplete
even though in preview it was ok. After that the printer freezes.
Canceling the job won't help. It wont do a thing and MP150 is still
showing marks as if it is working but that's all. It doesn't print.

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 ->12.04)

2012-06-09 Thread Blempis
With on the fly disabled there is no copying cd option anymore, at least which
works.
Perhaps you could make another patch so that copying cd is routed via the slow
method. It would still be far better than the current corrupted copy cd option.

Change Gtx 580 to Gts 250 and Cd update install from 10.04 to 12.04 goes

is there - doesn't move - and disappears after a while.

[Bug 950551] Re: No Mouse Cursor

2012-05-03 Thread Blempis
After upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04 mouse pointer disappeared.

This might be a driver issue as well as related to graphics card because
install both from usb stick and cd froze completely with my gtx 580. I
changed that to gts 250 and install from cd went through. However during
the installation process several errors were reported; 'unable to
install previous packages which were broken' as I remember it was
stated.

After reboot mouse pointer showed up (didn't move) and disappeared after
a while.

[Bug 651820] [NEW] package avahi-daemon 0.6.25-1ubuntu6.1 failed to install/upgrade: EOF on stdin at conffile prompt

2010-09-30 Thread Blempis
Public bug reported:

Bug 327362 was solved this way:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/avahi/+bug/327362/comments/29

I followed that instruction. After upgrading to kernel 2.6.32-25-generic

[Bug 6290] Re: DV capture over Firewire is broken (no rights for /dev/raw1394)

2010-05-19 Thread Blempis
Ubuntu 10.04 didn't solve the problem. Not even this trick wasn't
effective any more:

you have to add # to blacklist firewire-ohci to prevent blacklist

was
blacklist firewire-ohci
Now
# blacklist firewire-ohci

I tried this too:

In Ubuntu 10.04

Paste this in your terminal:

echo 'KERNEL=="raw1394", GROUP="video", MODE="0664"' |
sudo tee /etc/udev/rules.d/50-raw1394.rules
&& sudo restart udev

If the tips in this guide do not work please file a bug in launchpad
against Kino.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Firewire

So, here we are.

This was uneffective as well:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9285205

By the way, this bug pops up every now and then while it is actually
several years old! Ubuntu / Kino should detect the Camera and ask (for
security reasons) whether this found device should be connected.

For some reason the Ubuntu team is not so eager to solve this issue.
They really should while there is no simple and proposed solution for
capturing video from a camcorder.

[Bug 533132] [NEW] Boinc fails to reopen current projects (9.10)

2010-03-05 Thread Blempis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: boinc

At first everything seems normal. Boinc is checking the system's status.
After minute or two boinc gives it's error message but no further
information is included. Current projects are not shown and new ones
cannot be added. This problem occurs when computer was shut down for
awhile.

There seems to be a work around to solve the problem. Just reinstall
boinc with synaptic - every time. However, this is not a satisfying
method.

[Bug 350745] [NEW] Solved bugs are still hanging around as default

2009-03-28 Thread Blempis
Public bug reported:

About Bug #95886 Nicolay Korslund wrote on 2008-05-03: (permalink)

"I found a quick workaround myself,
$ setxkbmap no

(here 'no' means Norwegian, not the opposite of 'yes'. Use eg. 'fi' for
Finish.) This works like a charm, so it's strange that the automatic
layout configuration fails."

So I tried it and yes, it worked like a charm, this 'fi' in my case.
This leads me to conclusion that there are presumably several other old
bugs which has a solution but for some reason they are still not fixed.
If this is the case it is quite obvious why some problems are still
there year after year. For example, bug #95886 is now two years old. I
use ubuntu 64-bit 8.04.

[Bug 95886] Re: Wrong keyboard layout after installation (US instead of FI)

2009-03-28 Thread Blempis
I use version 8.04 and for some reason this bug didn't occur
immeaditly. Keyboard settings are lost in every reboot and have to be
reset every time which is somewhat annoying user experience.

Somewhat peculiar detail was that my other computer (ubuntu 8.10)
recognize this keyboard as 105 while ubuntu 8.04 says it is 104.

This rather easy to solve bug has now two candles on it's cake.
Congratulations!

[Bug 231187] Re: Missing sound

2008-06-27 Thread Blempis
I payed for professional linux support to solve this problem. Because I
don't tend to give people's names to any forum I e-mailed to some
developer direct contact information to reach that person. While this
was rather long time ago, the exact solution of the problem is hardly
remembered any more by that person. Perhaps we should leave this case as
it is - at least for now. My system had so many problems during the
hardy experience that unfortenately I feel it is time to move on and
find a distro which suits better to my needs. Ubuntu is great in many
ways but some policies practised within it are simply not for business
use. One just have to be sure that essential packages for daily use are
there in the next release as well. On the other hand, debian style
opportunity to get the latest programs are important as well.

To make my point clear, the current situation is that one has to make
choise between up to date programs and a risk that essential programs
are not in the repos any more.

As I wish to make no flames and it would be defenately considered as
such if I report this as a new bug, I sincerely hope that you make your
best evaluation if this should lead to a separated bug report or not.
Here, propably as a part of a rarely known bug there shouldn't be harm
to ubuntu's fame.

Well, you decide.

[Bug 197589] Re: Numeric keypad no longer works after upgrade

2008-05-28 Thread Blempis
I have two desktop computers. Both upgrades from 7.10 to 8.04 were painful.
Normal internet upgrade failed during the install process and cd-upgrade's
automatic option didn't work either.
"A dialog will be displayed offering you the opportunity to upgrade using that
CD. "
- Ubuntu

"If the upgrade dialog is not displayed for any reason, you may also run the
following command using Alt+F2: "
Not so straight work flow even here. A message popped up claiming that cd is
not mounted, which it surely was. After remounting system seemed to hang but
the announcement was hidden. It was under all the other windows but nothing
indicated that it even exists.

Next step was to realize that cd-upgrade is defenately not going to do
anything nor it is giving any instructions. The lacking piece of advise
was that cd should be added to one's download sources. After that and
number of error pop-ups everything seemed to be ok, but my numpad
stopped responding. As I mentioned, all this happened during both hardy
upgrades.

Solution (which is surely not intuitive) was this already mentioned one:
" 1. Go to System > Preferences > Accessibility > Keyboard Accessibility
   2. Select [x] Enable keyboard accessibility features
   3. Go to the tab Mouse Keys and deselect [ ] Enable keyboard accessibility
features."

- Ubuntu - rather stable if not upgraded to LTS.

[Bug 231173] [NEW] Num keys not working

2008-05-16 Thread Blempis
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to hardy from gutsy num keys didn't work.

This problem might refer to my attemps to upgrade to hardy which wasn't an easy
task this time. For some reason upgrade option disappeared to show in update
manager so I had to find another way to do the job. Normal magic through the
command line didn't help so I downloaded 64-bit alternate install .iso, burned
cd and made success. While the instructions were in english I wanted to make
sure that I can follow them. So I changed my language settings to english, just
temporarily, for this task. Now my keyboard doesn't respond no matter is
numlock on or off.

Re: [Bug 223623] Re: Upgrade to hardy failed

2008-04-30 Thread Blempis
Hi,

Installation failed and and after that nautilus didn't work and all the
desktop icons were missing. I got help from the finnish ubuntu community
and someone gave these instructions:
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

It worked, but these attachments copied here are after executing the
commands listed above. So I'm not sure are these log files referring to
the right installation.

Cheers!

To make it sure the reason for this slow rendering is not due to my
files or my computers, security etc. just download any .blend file you
can get and open it. Hope that you are now in a 3d window, that is like
the default window when opening blender. Press ctrl-0 to get the camera
view. Select some drawn objects on the screen by right clicking your
mouse. Just hope the scene has some default settings and if not, find a
buttons window. In that view press f5 and you can change the object's
material settings. Click mirror trans to adjust how much mirror effect
the object shall have via the RayMir slider. Remember to toggle the
RayMir option. As the same way you can toggle on RayTransp to make the
object glass like. There is a slider for that as well. The ball on the
utmost left gives a rough idea how the materia should look when
rendered. Press f10 to make it sure Ray (ray tracing) is turned on. Now
press the biggest button there is, the Render button. F12 is a short key
for that, as well.

When finished, you should see the rendering time in that render window.
If everything went fine, you should now have a picture with glass, or
mirror like objects. Now compare the time with windows.

Like I said before, linux is usually 20 - 40 percent faster than
windows, but this ray tracing makes linux really freezing.

I haven't make any 32-bit tests. Generally 64-bit is much faster, but
the bug itself might be 64-bit related. I used bleder 2.44 from
repository and now I'm using 2.45 (from getdeb) while it was supposed to
be a bug fix release.

Yes, I do compare exactly the the same file in ubuntu and windows.

2008-02-17 Thread Blempis
This should be a graphic driver issue while
a) blender renderer is supposed to be purely cpu based.
b) in my xp there are not any modifications to make better use of the graphic
driver.

Besides, non-free drivers are unfortunately out of the question, at
least in my case.

[Bug 186371] [NEW] Ray tracing too slow (not joking)

2008-01-27 Thread Blempis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: blender

Rendering on 64-bit ubuntu is much faster than on 32-bit xp (up to
40%). However, raytracing in ubuntu is really slow, so slow it can be
considered as a bug, because windows can render at multiple speed
compared to ubuntu when that option is enabled.

Testing:
- Render a scene without ray tracing and compare the rendering times with xp
and ubuntu and notice how much faster the latter is.
- Re-render but now ray tracing enabled. Make sure that most large objects on
your scene are reflective and transparent.

Both operating systems are now rendering slower than without ray tracing
but ubuntu almost stucks.

[Bug 183224] Re: Blind camera view & crash

2008-01-27 Thread Blempis
I have difficulties to create a shared folder with the host ubuntu and
usb drives are not working by default - haven't done either operation
before so theres no way to import those .blend files where the problem
occurs. Besides that virtualbox supports only 32-bits guests so there
are too many unknowns to make sense to this kind of approach. Hopefully
this bug will be marked as 'confirmed' while it seems to be related to
those formerly reported bugs and therefore this might give the
developers a hint for solving the problem.

Of course, I'll make some tests with Hardy live-cd if you consider it
would be worth that.

[Bug 184471] Re: Vectorblur does not work with input movies

2008-01-20 Thread Blempis
Problem solved and originally caused by my mistake. Blender needs the
input movie to be exactly the same size than the scene. In my case
pixels didn't match. Besides that also persentage values have to match.
Combining 640*480 scene and 50% rendering settings to 320*240 input file
might cause you some problems.

[Bug 184471] Vectorblur does not work with input movies

2008-01-19 Thread Blempis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: blender

Nodes editor gives an option to combine the current scene and an image
of movie file so that there is a node from both to a vectorblur filter.
It is usually much faster way to get the end result than the normal
mblur (motion blur).

When rendering single images everything goes just fine, but usually
movie files are getting black. Blender renders first the current scene
and after that the image is added (black) and blurred. There was a
similar problem in windows, but at the moment it seems to work in that
environment.

Short tutorial to replicate the bug

Make an animation;) and save it. (Dont' erase the current scene or quit
blender.)
Open the Node editor.
Press the Composite Nodes button (the face), and select Use Nodes. Boxes for
render layer and composite result appear.
Add/input/image.
Add/filter/vectorblur.
Connect image box's "image" to vectorblur's "image".
Press f10 and select Render Layer. Press the blue box "Vec" and in the upper
working space Render Layer gets a Speed output. Connect it to Vector Blur's
Speed as well as Z to Z.
Now, connect Vector Blur's Image to Composite's Image.

Make sure to change the name of the Output file - you might want to keep
your original animation without vectorblur (or overall black view).

In the animation panel select Do Composite, then Anim.

[Bug 183224] Blind camera view & crash

2008-01-15 Thread Blempis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: blender

This bug is probably related with #148037 and #123437 according to my
findings.

Camera view is totally black and objects are correctly seen only outside
the camera limits. When trying to have an other angle eg. num3 or num7,
blender crashes. Some .blend files are saved on camera view and then
blender crashes instantly.

My temporary solution is this: When opening .blend file I just keep on
tapping num3 (num1 and num7 will be fine, as well) and so blender
changes the view before the crash occurs.

The problem occurs with three different computers, some with ati and
nvidia cards. Two of the computers are running 64 bit gutsy, one is 32
bit.

I had this problem with blender 2.43 and 2.44 both downloaded from official
repositories. The current bug fix release 2.45 is from getdeb:
http://www.getdeb.net/
