2012-10-31 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
Thank you for the prompt and precise(no pun) response!

I can confirm that installing linux-image-3.2.0-33-generic (3.2.0-33.52)
from precise-proposed solves the problem.

Everything is working perfectly for me again.

Please tell me if there is anything else you need to close this bug
(logs/reports other test).

[Bug 1072773] [NEW] Linux kernel 3.2.0-32 and Radeon HD 6670 unresposive desktop

2012-10-29 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to kernel image 3.2.0-32 the graphical session does not
respond to mouse and keyboard events after login. The unity launcher
also seems to be a bit more purple than usual.

The critical part seems to be the following error from dmesg:
[4.736370] [drm:radeon_atom_pick_pll] *ERROR* unable to allocate a PPLL

Everything works perfectly when booting on any kernel image up to and
including 3.2.0-31.

Just to round this off.

The release version of 12.04 installs fine on both of our HP Proliant DL
585 G7 servers. One has the original firmware and one has the latest
firmware.

Good work!

[Bug 969304] Re: Regression: Missing Firmware Files phanfw.bin and nx3fwct.bin (precise 12.04 beta)

2012-04-13 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
Updating the firmware on the HP Proliant DL 585 G7 server was a fairly
complex operation. The following describes the steps taken by my
colleague to update the firmware:

Download list:
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-linux-fw-array/p1997486963/v73626/CP016377.md5
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-linux-fw-array/p1997486963/v73626/CP016377.scexe
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/cd/p1040529012/v64851/firmware-9.30-0.zip
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-windows/p1576607567/v65577/cp014214.exe

You will need to perform these steps on a Windows PC:
0) Download the files.
1) Extract firmware-9.30-0.zip.
2) Use cp014214.exe to create a bootable USB key, from the iso file in
firmware-9.30-0.zip.
3) copy CP016377.md5 and CP016377.scexe to /HPFWUP9xx/hp/swpackages on the USB
key.

You do these steps on the server:
4) Boot on the USB key.
5) Switch to another console (alt+F1).
6) Execute CP016377.scexe.

[Bug 969304] Re: Regression: Missing Firmware Files phanfw.bin and nx3fwct.bin (precise 12.04 beta)

2012-04-12 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
Performed a firmware upgrade on the HP Proliant DL 585 G7 server. Both
BIOS and storage controller. That seems to have solved the problem.
Installing the 12.04 beta2 server without problems.

I have attached the output from dmesg on the server after the firmware
upgrade.

I am not entirely clear on what firmware loading by the kernel means in
this context. Is the kernel loading firmware into the network and
storage cards during boot? How does this relate to the firmware flashing
we have just made?

I have two of these servers, but we only updated the firmware on one. I
can keep the servers at different firmware levels until the final 12.04
release is out. I will be happy to run any tests, on either server, that
might help you nailing the proper solution.

[Bug 937602] Re: lxdm clears kerberos ticket cache on login

2012-04-11 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
Using "retain_after_close" may work as a temporary work around, but it
does not fix the bug.

The fact that using retain_after_close will prevent the clearing of the
credentials cache on login is a strong hint that to what the bug is. It
now seems very likely that 'lxdm' is closing the just created session
during initiation. The session should only be closed on logout.

Notice that using retain_after_closed has some security implications as
you leave your credentials behind after closing a session.

[Bug 850649] Re: gnome-terminal extremely slow and display buggy

2012-03-12 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
This bug is concerning low performance and graphical corruption of
output in terminal like programs on ANY desktop using ANY driver on ANY
number of screens!

Having followed discussions for this bug and bug #877438 for some time i
am very confident that this is not a duplicate.

I have removed the duplicate status.

Please notice that there are several separate bugs that have similar
symptoms but are not the same:

 * If you have an *nVidia* card and *multi headed* setup you may want to check
out bug #877438
 * For slow performance in any *multi headed* setup using *Unity* on any driver
check out bug #874619

These bugs are not duplicates but have somewhat similar symptoms. It is
possible that you can be affected by more than one if these at same
time, but they are not the same bug!

[Bug 869408] Re: gnome-shell hangs when switching to a running VMWare Player Window in Activities menu

2012-02-23 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
Just to elaborate on the quick fix for those using Kerberos.

As has been posted by several others, you can drop to the console and
kill the gnome-shell process, start a new gnome-shell and return to your
desktop.

If you are using Kerberos you should remember to set the KRB5CCNAME
environment variable to keep all your windows in the same kerberos
session.

The pattern becomes:

(CTRL-ALT-F1 to the console and login)

killall -9 gnome-shell
export $(xargs --null --max-args=1 < /proc/$(pidof gnome-session)/environ |
grep KRB5CCNAME=)
gnome-shell -d :0

(CTRL-ALT-F7 to get back to the desktop)

...and all of your gnome-session windows will keep using the same
kerberos credentials cache.

[Bug 937602] [NEW] lxdm clears kerberos ticket cache on login

2012-02-21 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
Public bug reported:

When using kerberos login through PAM lxdm will correctly call PAM to
get kerberos credentials. The kerberos credentials, notably the TGT, are
written to the sessions credentials cache in /tmp/krb5cc_${UID}_xxx.
This credential cache file is deleted by lxdm before starting
/usr/bin/startlxde. The user experience is that although the login
succeeded he can not access any kerberos secured services. This
essentially makes lxdm useless in a kerberos environment.

Doing strace on the lxdm process shows that lxdm processes the login as
expected through PAM which creates the credentials cache. Then lxdm
forks a new process that immediatly reads the credetials file and then
unlinks it, the process than goes on to exec /usr/bin/startlxde.

The result is the same whether using libpam-krb5 or libpam-heimdal

Quick fix: use gdm

[Bug 869408] Re: gnome-shell hangs when switching to a running VMWare Player Window in Activities menu

2012-01-25 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
I can confirm the bug.

This is not Nvidia specific since I use the radeon driver on an ATI
card.

I believe the hangs primarily appear when VMware looses focus, but are
otherwise completely random. The rate is closer to 1:100 than 1:10.

Killing the 'gnome-shell' process with '-KILL' is a usable work around
for me.

This is not a duplicate of bug #877438 since it does not seem to be
caused by specific drivers.

This bug deals with Compiz/Unity plug-in on any driver in a multi-screen
setup.

The python test program should be run like this:

 python test_prog.py 60

The last argument is number of lines per second of output.

That confirms my suspicion that this may be caused by several separate
issues.

What I am experiencing is clearly linked to Compiz/Unity on a
multi-screen desktop.

Some of the other reports suggest that there might also be a separate
issue with low performance related to specific combinations of drivers
and hardware as well.

I will split off bug #874619 as its title better reflects the issue i am
seeing.

[Bug 877438] Re: Unity/compiz has sluggish performance on dual-head with nvidia driver

2012-01-10 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
I have spend a lot of time trying different setups to test this. The
conclusion seems to be:

1) The problem is apparent on both ATI and Nvidia hardware.

2) It only occurs on multiscreen setups

3) It only and always occurs when the Unity plugin to Compiz is active.

Simple reproduction can be done by:

Standard unity desktop session across multiple screens.

Run the attached python program in a fullscreen terminal on one screen.

Try typing in another terminal on another screen.

Python program to spout lines:

import time
import sys

try:
lps=float(sys.argv[1])
except IndexError:
lps=0

a=0
while True:
a+=1
print "Dette er lang linie nummer %d som skal vise om vi kan lave hurtig
scroll" % a
if lps > 0:
time.sleep(1.0/lps)

[Bug 911241] Re: resolvconf ignoring dns-nameservers, dns-search in iface-stanzas

2012-01-09 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
I can confirm the bug.

The resolvconf package is installed and the network-manager package is
not.

Relevant part of /etc/network/interfaces:

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 130.225.51.87
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 130.225.51.0
broadcast 130.225.51.255
gateway 130.225.51.1
# dns-* options are implemented by the resolvconf package, if installed
dns-nameservers 130.225.51.16 130.225.51.19 130.225.51.99
dns-search es.aau.dk

After boot /etc/resolv.conf contains:
-
# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN
-

Doing 'ifdown eth0' followed by 'ifup eth0' will do the right thing.

Conclusion:
=

The resolvconf package works fine if the interface is brought up via the
command line, but during boot it writes a useless /etc/resolv.conf file.

The ifup command takes a long time to complete which may hint at further
problems.

[Bug 874619] Re: Unity compiz plugin makes display slow on multi-screen

2012-01-03 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
This bug is NOT specific to Nvidia.

I can confirm it on ATI using both the open source radeon and the closed
source fglrx drivers.

The problem seems to be linked to compiz on muti-screen

[Bug 850649] Re: gnome-terminal extremely slow and display buggy

2012-01-03 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 877438 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/877438

I believe that this bug is not tied to Nvidia, which may mean that it
not a duplicate of bug #877438.

I can confirm the bug on an multi headed Intel i7 system with an ATI
Radeon HD6670.

Any gnome-terminal window that scrolls will slow down the entire desktop
to crawl. Up to several seconds of delay when typing in another window.

I have tried tha various drivers including the xorg radeon driver from
Oneric, the xorg radeon driver from the xorg-edgers PPA, the fglrx
driver from Oneric and the latest fglrx driver from AMD. I have 3 active
displays when using the radeon driver and 2 when using the fglrx driver.
The bug is clearly present using any of these configurations.

I have also tried both the Gnome and the Unity desktops (all modes).
They all have the same problem!

I used to have a window showing the live logs from my log server. In
11.04 this will makes my workstation completely unusable. The same
setup on the same hardware was extremely fast and responsive when
running 11.04.

I do not see the bug if I use an xterm for the scrolling window.

The problem is clearly not specific to neither Nvidia or a single
display driver. It is most likely tied to the compiz and multi-head
combination.
